Title: Avios vacation from NYC
Post by: Ergel on June 15, 2012, 12:47:32 PM
Don't want to take the Toronto thread too far afield so I'll start a new one.

Seems like not enough to do in Toronto to warrant flying out for a few days do looking for other suggestions for a short vacation from NYC using avios.
Been recently to philli, Boston and DC so that takes basically all the driving distance ones. Maybe Baltimore
One suggestion was Montreal-good idea?
Cleveland? KC? Atlanta-probably too hot.
Any other good ideas? Anything i'm missing.

Already gonna be in ord twice this summer. Looking for something else. What to do in the others to warrant a 2/3 day trip (I am not a foodie so don't travel just for food)

What are you looking to do? Museums, hiking, water activities, sight seeing, etc.? i.e. if you give a list of what you like to do in cities it'll be easier to figure out. I would definitely find plenty to do in Toronto for 2-3 days so if you can't maybe your looking for different activities...

Love hiking and also like museums/sight seeing. Didn't look at all into Toronto, just from reading through this thread that was the perception I got. What would you do in Toronto?

Well besides obviously Niagara falls. Here is a list of 229 activities in Toronto I am sure you can find 3 days worth of fun :P. I haven't spent that much time in Toronto although I love the city its just so clean and has nicer people than America. As for the others Cleveland has a plethora of amazing hikes that you can "discover" water falls, go creek walking, all in totally secluded areas. I am sure I can find some great hikes if you decide to go. They also have one of my favorite art museums (which is free btw) if your into that. there is the rock and roll hall of fame as well as the polka hall of fame lol. They just got a new casino. here's a list of 96 thing to do http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g50207-Activities-Cleveland_Ohio.html . Pittsburgh meh I wouldn't bother they have some great kids museums but I think you would get bored. Cleveland and Toronto both have beaches where you can do water stuff btw. If you have more questions I'll try and answer this was just a ramble hope some of it made sense.

Also, AA doesn't fly direct to DEN so prob not worth using Avios.

How about New Hampshire's White Mountains? Plenty of hikes and other activities to do. 7 hour drive from NYC.
See my little trip report here http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=2527.msg26512#msg26512
You can also visit Boston on the way home.

If you're thinking Canada, how about checking out Ottawa? Plenty of attractions there including museums, Parliament Hill, and the must see changing of the guards. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g155004-Activities-Ottawa_Ontario.html
No clue about flight availability. I think it's a 3 hour drive from Montreal.

OP says in title he is looking for 'vacation', so I doubt Toronto is the one he is looking for, its more for attractions/sightseeing. He should look for some resort type of plase.

If it happens it'll probably be to there or a drive to Baltimore.
Toronto makes a lot of sense. A nice amount to do, kosher food, plenty of award availability. I'll definitely do it eventually, the question is will it work out now

A simple google search of Quebec city will show you it is a tourist destination, whereas Toronto is not. Iy'h will be there soon and will tell you exactly what u missed.

@ergel not nice of you as I'm just trying to help you. Why are you doing that for me? I gain nothing by helping you, just trying to figure a dest to fit your needs.
From my perspective, vacation is  relaxing, so you should prefer resort. Attractions are a totally different thing. Has an other purpose, so you should look for very different ideas.
My opinion. Take it or leave it.

but if I'm doing LGA-DFW-EGE using avios, does it make sense?
Is it not worth using avios because its not direct?

Not a terrible value, especially considering you save yourself a 2.5 hour ride from den

They actually fly direct during ski season, plus that puts you there for the main attraction, which is the skiing.

How far away are the fires raging in Colorado? Even if it's far away they are pretty big. It may be in the air and not to healthy especially for young children, older people, or asthmatics.

Last year I went to RI with my wife and baby for a few days. It's not too far from NYC (4hrs) and it's quite relaxing. There's enough to do there for a few days. Newport is beautiful. You can visit the Touro synagogue, the beautiful mansions, cliff walks and chill on the beach etc. Maybe even hop over to Martha's Vineyard. I loved it.
