You can't really unlock a CDMA phone.
With Sprint for example if it doesn't say Sprint on it they won't activate it.  No SIM card to use as a workaround.

There is an MSL code on all CDMA phones that you are given when you activate the phone...won't do you much good though AFAIK.

There are ways to unlock sprint phones for boost mobile. I think it depends on the state (boot mobile in some states uses a sim card like technology, but in others it uses  partly on cdma   in those states you can you unlock the sprint phones for use with boost mobile) all this is avail just google it

the number, that is is supposedly unchangeable by CDMA is the equivalent of the imei number by GSM phones.

Although it is at a  hardware level, it can be forced.

Only a fraction of people who can unlock cells can do this.

The purpose of changing those serials are usually shady....

By cdma, if I change my number to yours, I can call on your account, or by gsms, if phones with certain serials have been reported  stolen, they will be banned from the operators, but by changing the serial, you will be able to keep on using the phone.

If you are interested you can look on http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=imeinr (for gsm phones=ones with sim card), and by typing *#06# on your handset, you will receive your serial number, which you can give in on site provided.

You can get the MSL online by switching phones back and forth.
Whether you can find a rep willing to activate on VZW is another story.

whats the going rate for such a phone?

Title: Re: cell phone unlocking
Post by: SuperFlyer on February 08, 2010, 09:57:29 AM
Not sure about the going rate, but as with every cellphone be very careful that it has a clean source.

They are very easily traceable (see hints in previous posts), and followed up even more than weed.

Buy only with an invoice (the invoice MUST have the serial number which MATCHES the one of the phone [remove the battery to see it, or type *#06#])

yep thats true. if you can get then to cancel within the first month without having to give back the phone. most of the time they wont allow you to do that. there are  to get around this. be resourceful. if you wait till the second month its gonna cost you a month of service with taxes (i think its about $80 on the cheapest plan) plus $170 to cancel i think you also pay activation fee. you gotta compare that with the online prices and include the risk/hassle factor!
analyze, judge,conclude, keep us posted.

I'd just buy a cheap prepaid GSM phone for $15. Nokia's are usually very easy to unlock. Or hit up ebay.

Unless you are hankering for the fruit phone, in which case you have to pay for that privilege.

FYI Sprint phones can technically be used on Verizon through cloning. It's illegal and not a "clean" solution per se, but if you want to know how, PM me. I've got a guide somewhere in my email.

Depends on the phone/carrier. Usually yes, but not at the speed that it would work on it's home carrier.

Like I said... It varies. I'm assuming that most people would want to clone a fairly popular phone, which makes it easier, b/c other people will have done the initial legwork for you ;)

Verizon will have a GSM network within the year

No, they'll have an LTE data network, which is where GSM and CDMA are both heading.
It's technically incorrect to call LTE a GSM network AFAIK.

And they'll still be using CDMA for voice for many more years, although that will go LTE as well eventually.

It's not just incorrect, it's simply untrue. From what I understand, I'm quite sure you won't be able to use a GSM phone on VZW.

AFAIAC, Verizon will only be considered a GSM carrier once I can put a VZW sim in an unlocked GSM phone and use their domestic GSM network for voice and data (at least GPRS/EDGE).

Agreed. This seems to be a "political" rather than practical move.

Sometimes its not even locked.

Put in any other sim card, and switch to gsm (settings, mobile settings), and if you get in with or without your 4 digit pin, its not locked.

If not locked it will work with any gsm operator in the world.
(The latter is true only with quad bands, but phones that are tri, or dual, will be more limited with the operator available)

I have the exact same issue with my F160... apparently there unlock system puts a hold on unlock codes for 6 months if it was purchased as a gophone (this is what the after hours supervisor told me). In any case I have unlocked 5 or 6 att phones and have never had this issue but they have never been gophones... they said they can put a case in to escalate and get the code but it takes a few days and I'm leaving in a few hours :-/

Interestingly enough, I was blocked from running the DC-Unlocker program until I uninstalled WINPCAP - a "packet sniffer" that was loaded on my machine (from an "Ethical Hacking" course I once took :) ).   I guess they don't want people knowing the unlock codes that they send to your phone, but if every phone is different - why would they care?

Question:
friend of mine has a great priced Sprint plan (Free & Clear 1000 for $50 per month with 5 additional lines sharing the minutes at $0.00. Data service on 3 lines)

These plans are no longer available but he can still hold it as long as he doesn't upgrade the plan.

The only problem is that (unlike SERO-P,) this plan doesn’t support and won’t work with any of the newer Smartphones or blackberries. The best devices that can get activate under this plan are  the HTC Touch Pro 2 and Blackberry Tour 9630.

So he's kinda stuck with this plan by loving the price but hating the limitations and restrictions..

Was wondering if i purchase let’s say a Sprint iPhone at retail price (they won’t let him upgrade to this device unless he changes the plan) if there is a way of changing (read cloning) the ESN and other phone identifications to the ESN and others codes of an LG Rumor Touch which he currently has and is supported under the free & clear plan.

So basically have the sprint network detect the iPhone as an LG Rumor Touch?

Or is it an hardware issue and un-accomplishable?

I'm located in Lakewood NJ - I could ship if you (or anyone is interested) they have been collecting just for quite some time... I got them for my friends to use in Israel but...

I actually dont remember if they are new or refub, thats why I wrote "NEW ..." I could check.

I once tried an ebay auction - but prob like a year ago...

You didn't write "NEW...", you wrote NEW (no quotes) :P

A relative is going to Israel tomorrow, so shipping from Lakewood won't really work for me this time around. $10 is a great deal IMHO.

Anyone know where I can unlock the AT&T ZTE u2800a (http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/packages/packages-details.jsp?q_sku=sku5330248&q_package=sku5330250) for cheap ($5 or less)? Does AT&T freely give out GoPhone unlock codes to their postpaid customers?

I unlocked 2 AT&T Huawei U2800a Go Phones (bought on best buy for $10) at https://www.swiftunlocks.com/ for $6 each, worked like a charm. (BTW the phones are junkie). Also unlocked AT&T zte 431 for $5 at same site.

3 weeks ago I purchased a uphone unlock on ebay for $1.29. I got a message back from the seller that at&t unlocking service was down, and that all sellers are having the issue. After that all ebay prices jumped.
I ended up onlocking the phone for free by using the unlocking form on the att website with a friends account info.
Is this arrest related/the source for this?

ATT is majorly cracking down. FWIU, only ATT employees have access to unlocking, and ATT is going after them big time. This guy that was arrested was the big fish.

He wasn't arrested for unlocking phones, which just became illegal in the USA. Because they will not crack down on those.

He was arrested because he worked for AT&T and sent IMEI numbers to Apple to unlock devices, which means he stole from AT&T.

HUCA. Once you've had the contract for 90 days, they should unlock it for international.

Just got this now:

Thank you for contacting AT&T about unlocking your mobile device.

Unfortunately, your unlock request was denied because:

You haven’t fulfilled your service contract.

You can submit a new request once you complete your service contract.

Questions? Please call 800.331.0500, or dial 611 from your AT&T wireless phone. :'( :'( :'(

In other words it works like a radio station, intl works on FM and america works on AM. But both are radio frequencies.

I'm not sure you understand what's going on. Most (if not all) smartphones today, have a SIM card for LTE service. This SIM card can be swapped out for any local SIM card worldwide. (Sprint [once?] blocked non-sprint sim card while in the USA, but if you were in Europe/Israel, you can pop in any local sim card. Verizon is basically the same. (I'm not so particular/up-to-date with the rules here). My Verizon & Sprint are unlocked out of the box.

Another service that they offer, that you can use your phone with the SIM card that you use here in the states, you can use it worldwide and pay them the intl fee, VZW for example has 100MB/$25 - about $1-2 per minute talk etc, not sure about Sprint.

I'm sorry if it wasn't so clear.

ETA: Even on there dumb-phones, they have some intl agreements where you can use as CDMA, like Israel they have(had)with Pelephone, I was charged $.05 for incoming txt, $.50 for outgoing, $2.50 min/talk

Had no idea that nonSIM card carriers (Sprint and Verizon) can work in Israel if unlocked!  CSRs never told me this.  I don't remember seeing a SIM card slot, though.

I want to do the T-Mobile contract buyout deal so I wanted to get an ATT $1 contract phone to move over to them.  ATT requires a working line to port over to get the $1 contract deal.

What is the cheapest nonATT company to get a phone number to port over?

you need to prove the fees they charged for breaking the contract so you have no gain by creating a contract you need to break

Does anyone know if it's worth even looking into unlocking my Lumia 520 (at&t gophone, but being used on a regular plan)? I am thinking of switching to Sprint by adding a line to my wife's account. I am getting conflicting reports about whether the phone would work on Sprint after being unlocked.
I bought the Lumia on sale from Amazon a couple months ago. Until then, I had a basic messaging phone. Once I switched phones, AT&T started charging me an extra $20/mo with absolutely no change in service. Basically taxing me for doing something independently with my money.

Or buy a Sim card with a month preloaded on Ebay. Port your number, get a free Sim, and a month service for under $30 for a $60 plan doesn't hurt either. Dealers get a bonus for signing up a new customer; you should take advantage of that.

Vzw 5 is unlocked by default. 4 or 4s? Only the 4s can be unlocked

I have a Verizon SIM card (from an iPhone 5c) and want to insert into a T-Mobile iPhone 5.  When I put in the SIM card, it says "no service," and Verizon says they're unable to locate the phone (using the IMEI), and because one is CDMA and one is GSM, the SIM card won't work and I'll need to buy a new phone.

I'm not convinced ... anyone have any advice as to how to get my Verizon SIM card (which was active) to work on this T-Mobile device?

Att won't work unless it's unlocked.

Has anyone unlocked a Sprint cell phone recently for international use? Do you not have to do the whole spiel with itunes like you used to?

Also is there still now a way to check that the phone is indeed unlocked?

Yes

You do not have to do the whole iTunes thing.

All you have to do is connect to wifi and put in a non-sprint sim (can't be at&t or t-mobile).
Then one of 3 things will happen

1. It will show the apple logo and ask for your apple ID and password. Afterwards number 2 will happen.
2. It will say no service in the to right corner = the phone is unlocked
3. It will say "Sim not valid" then you know the phone is NOT unlocked and you have to call sprint

Internationally the phone works fine. Only in the U.S. it's a problem.

Normally a message should pop-up that the sim is locked, and when you enter the MSL code it should work.

Also, where is the ZTE ZMAX 2 sold for $60? How does it compare to Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 (currently $100 from Cricket)?
Also on ebay for 60.

Thank you for replying.

1. Will that ZTE give LTE speeds with Cricket?
2. Why am I not finding the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 on Ebay for $60? :(
3. Which is better, the above Alcatel or the ZTE?
4. Also, I prefer smaller smartphones. What can I get that is the size of a LG Optimus S that has good processor speed, decent internal storage, and will work with Cricket?

I'm in a rush because I want to finalize before my next Sprint billing date.

Thank you again for all your help.

Even though it's unlocked?

I don't understand why people say you can unlock phones and bring them from carrier to carrier, if it doesn't seem that way based on your replies to both the iPhone and the HTC Evo?

I think there is a big misunderstanding what locked/unlocked means.

All phones that are made are always assigned to a carrier (yes even the ones that say "Factory GSM Unlocked") to prove that just look up the model of the phone and you will see what carrier it was assigned to.

In order for a phone to have service the company has to know that you want service on this phone.

In the past company's like Sprint and Verizon did not work with a sim card they worked with the id of the phone to recognize what kind of phone / what carrier it was assigned to. This is know as CDMA. Yet company's like att/t-mobile did that too but the service was applied by using a sim.

Once LTE came out for what ever reason all company switched to the "Sim technology". There is still one thing that did not change, each carrier has their assigned bands that they have from the FCC that they are allowed to use.

Being that there are standard bands that every one uses (for international or the like) these are included in every phone. So.... All verizon phones will work on att, BUT will only have the bands for slower internet since those are standard bands.

Now verizon's LTE band is NOT a standard nor is their CDMA a standard so an att phone will NOT be able to accept a Verizon sim.

Now lets go to sprint phones,

All other company's when they had the phones made for them all they do is have it customized for its own use (Read: their own LTE bands). Sprint on the other hand not only did they have them customize it they put a lock in the software blocking all local USA bands (Verizon ATT and Tmobile).

They even go a step farther and they still do the old way of checking the device ID to see if its a sprint phone or not.

Hope this explains a few thing feel free to ask any questions.

Or maybe it doesn't need to be unlocked at all, and if I just put in a Cricket Sim it'll work with Cricket?

I personally never purchased an unlocking code, but a uncle of mine which I know has bought many codes from a specific guy, will have to ask him if it's still around to get from that guy and for which types or models. So maybe a one of the ddf members have some more knowledge or have actually purchased themselves a code!

By the way there is no law requiring them to have it factory unlocked. This was a decision Verizon made to MOST phones. I have seen in the past customers that did not pay off the phone yet, that the phone will be locked.

Which law?

While this probably SHOULD be the law, as it is in Israel, especially in today's day and age of no subsidies, I am unaware of any current such law.

I don't see how this doesn't violate any anti-trust rules or something of the sort. On the contrary, IIRC it's even illegal to flash a phone that you own outright.

It's not a law. Verizon had to agree to do it under pressure from the FCC. GIYF.

They all did. Verizon just has an advantage over AT&T and T-Mobile that even if you unlock it you wont have fast data so they will 90% of the time keep the customers. So they just unlocked all the phones, instead of having to deal with the customers. On the other hand once an At&T or T-Mobile is unlock its not the same story.

By law is a bad choice of words. I apologize. A more accurate phrase would be contractually bound. The FCC sold them an LTE band (700 (https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/47/27.16)) on condition that they would unlock all phones using that band. Verizon decided to make it a public relations bragging point and unlock almost all new phones.

The law regarding flashing phones changed a couple of years ago. Now, it's illegal for carriers to prevent you from configuring it to be used on another carrier.

So that means that there is a common band between Verizon and t-mobile? Or the band t-mobile is using for LTE is a standard band?

Sprint will do it. Their family plans are actually very good, but they won't activate my wife's Boost phone, so I'll need to buy another phone, so I'll probably buy another Moto g4.

Fwiu, when sprint unlocks a galaxy or iPhone it's only for an international sim and not a domestic one.
On sprints website there's a list of common phones and if it can be unlocked internationaly or domestically also. In the footnotes it says phones manufacturered before Feb 2015 can not be unlocked domestically but they can provide you with the MSL code (if you dial ##data# the menu to put in the code is there) which supposedly can unlock your phone to use on GSM.
The phone i wish to unlock is Galaxy S5 which tmobile compatibility checker claims will work, Sprint gave me the MSL code but im not quite sure what to do with it and any research ive done seems to say its useless... although nothing seemed to be current info

Neither does Verizon. They both use CDMA. If you call up Sprint to unlock it they will give you the MSL code, which you could try to see if Verizon could unlock it. Otherwise there's supposed to be a way to do that by changing the SPC code....

MLS code is useless! It seems that until the s6 sprint isn't up to date with the FCC regulations and by giving you the MLS although useless they're somehow complying. From the research I did it seems there's a physical piece of hardware in sprint phones (smart chip?) That would have to be removed and replaced. The one way to get around it is by flashing the phone, but couldn't find any info on how it's done.

Can it be unlocked? Yoni claims that not because of the way target scans their phones.

I have a Sprint iPhone 6 bought outright from BestBuy that was on RingPlus for 6 months and is now on TPO Mobile (a Sprint MVNO). Is it possible to unlock? Sprint won't unlock it because I've never actually been a Sprint customer directly. And TPO doesn't do unlocking. Any other ideas?

That is why.

Ok let me explain what has changed. To my knowledge this has NOTHING to do with a policy change more than a technical change.

Until now when using a sprint phone there was no such a thing as a full unlocking. What they did for you was when you left the US they unlocked the phone for international use. It was not possible to use the phone for another US carrier.
With all the newer phone the manufactures went away with the custom carrier phones, they made it "one size fits all".

Due to that if they would unlock the phone, this would mean the phone is entirely unlocked, allowing you to use the phone on any carrier.
Since you still owe them money (it sound like that you don't even own the phone) they would never in their right mind unlock it for you. Since you can just walk off with the phone and tell them have a nice day!
This also explains why they want 90 days. Since many times they give the phone for less, they need to make their money back, so they require "90 days"

I do not believe this applies to iPhone's, but i can be wrong.

I am very surprised they did it for you. Are you a long time customer?

I know it will work from exp. Just may not have the best service. I think only LTE will work on it.

Its not ordeal but it will technically work. Not if it was an apple direct unlocked, then it should work fine on both.

Explain to me how it can a GSM band be activated on a CDMA band?
If you can't initially activate it on CDMA it will not work even on the added GSM band since you need the primary band which is again CDMA which AT&T does NOT come with.

I'm just asking for explanation because the knowledge would help me, it's not that I don't trust you but I need facts.

First of all all iphones for verizon since the Iphone 5 CANNOT be activated using CDMA. Actually any phone that can use LTE (a sim in verizons case) will only activate using LTE.
I don't know how many phones you have activated but i am over 500 by now.

That being said, there are standard bands that are used on LTE, if the iPhone (we not talking about android) was made specifically for at&t then it should work on some LTE bands of verizon. They will NOT work if there is only CDMA.
If it was bought directly from apple it should work on all networks (except for sprint) without any issues.

As I said before this whole game it just about over as ALL the new phones are made will all the band's. So they will be able to go from one to the next.

There are some older android phones that will do this too. For example the nexus phones.

You said you only know of a exception with Verizon on SOME bands, so I take it it that sprint is NOT guaranteed on any bands.

Either way I think @Sam wanted to know if his at&t IPhone can be unlocked and used regularly on sprint and the answer afaik is no, even if you will find some types of bands it is not guaranteed to work properly

Do you mean that you used it roaming while you had t-mobile service or you set it up with a Canadian carrier?

I'm trying to figure out if is in fact locked to T-mobile. I checked the IMEI number on IMEI.info, and on Swappa but they don't seem to say whether it is unlocked. Any suggestions?
T-Mobile phones are extremely easy to unlock if you know someone who has a tmobile plan, all you have to do is get another service sim and call tmobile and tell them your going to some place besides for Canada or say Canada and you need more data then what they are offering as they cap it at a certain amount of gig, so you want to use a Canadian sim while abroad and they will give you the unlock code.

Verizon basic phone (4g flip) PREPAID- will that work with Red Pocket Mobile? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Verizon-Kyocera-Cadence-Prepaid-Cell-Phone-16GB-Black/229903939

on the box it says "in order to partially offset the subsidy Verizon ... this phone may only be used with Verizon Prepaid service for 1 yr/ until $50 in payments are received"

Does that mean I have to go through the trouble of manually unlocking it? Is that even possible? I'm not very familiar with unlocking "sugya", can anyone explain in laymen's terms if I'd need to/how I should for Red Pocket Mobile.
Thanks

EDIT: I'd really appreciate any help in this matter.
I called RPM and gave them the IMEI Number. They told me it was locked. Also, that even once it would be unlocked it would only work over gsm network. Can anyone shed light onto this? Thanks!

I don't know much about unlocking a prepaid Verizon phone. As far as I remember it's very hard to unlock them for use on other carriers. So I guess the only route is to pay the $50 on the account to be eligible to have it unlocked.

As far as when they said it will go through GSM. Maybe they meant that LTE is a GSM technology not a cdma technology so it will be using GSM networks. That doesn't mean it won't be going through Verizon.

"Our 4G Phone-in-a-Box phones may only be used with Verizon Prepaid service for 1 year from original activation date or until payments in the amount specified on the back of the Phone-in-a-Box package are added to the Prepaid account. This is to partially offset the subsidy we provide to make our 4G Phone-in-the-Box Prepaid phones more affordable to customers.

Once either of the criteria above is satisfied, you can dial *611 from your Verizon Wireless Prepaid phone or call 888.294.6804 and we will provide you with programming instructions so you can unlock your phone. If the user guide for your phone does not provide instructions to access the programming menu, we can help you with that as well."

See if it falls into this category

Not really familiar with the iPhones but I do have experience with the Samsung Galaxy's specifically the Galaxy S7 which I had multiple of them unlocked while abroad I had no problem unlocking them while I use the app to unlock them and if it didn't work with the app I would manually have it unlocked by calling up TMobile having no problems to have it unlocked permanently, don't see why you would go for a temporary unlock?
And never knew there was a restriction on how many temporary unlocks you could have per year.

Only call for service problem and related issues. Technical problems with the phone I tackle myself otherwise I will spent hours with clueless people.

Sorry for repost from other thread. Thought I would get more helpful information here.

I bought a used iPhone 6s A1633 on eBay, which is the ATT model and should be unlocked. When I insert the SIM, I get an error message that the SIM is not compatible with the phone. Apple told me that the phone is locked to Sprint. That seems strange to be because the phone could not have been purchased from Sprint as they would have sold the A1688. Sprint refused to talk to me since i am not the owner of the Sprint account. Does it make sense that Sprint would lock a phone that wasn't purchased from them? Any suggestion how I can solve this problem?

I did a search on www.imei.info and came up with following results. Would it show if it was locked by sprint?

IMEI : 354957070998193
Model : BYOSD I6S GRAY 64 BST SGL
Model Number: : I6SBTBY64GY1
BLACKLIST STATUS : CLEAN
ICCID : 89011201000294024607
ESN : 089399885500628761
LAST Activation Date : 2016-06-05
LAST Deactivation Date : 2016-06-06
Activated : YES

I have a Galaxy Note 9 from AT&T, I plan on going to Israel soon, and AT&T won't unlock it. They said because its not fully paid off. I don't want to pay it off because this phone is the "free" phone from a bogo sale, and I get a promo for it each month. I put in a Google Fi sim card and it said that the phone is locked. you need to pay an unlock service. google. or see above. you will also need a non-ATT SIM card at least temporarily for the unlock procedure.

Amazing, call them and speak straight to a supervisor and explain how you have the bogo plan and by paying the full amount due it would take away from the whole offer, and being that I'm a customer for x years and have x amount of plans with you guys I'm not running off and now when I want to take a vocation I won't be able to as it's locked.

Speak straight to a supervisor not a regular front line rep!

Yup that's correct, I always go for the permanent lock, but if your phone is... then go for the monthly unlock.
Also if neither works, give a call straight to T-mobile supervisors and have them manually generate the unlock code when putting in another carriers sim card.

my pleasure.
Tried on a phone of mine last week, which didn't work. I had that phone for a while but the unlock request said error, or we can't unlock it for you. So with such a phone you speak to the supervisor and get the pin manually.

The way all these unlocking companies unlock phones is by using special hardware/software. I still haven't figured out exactly how it works. It seems like you need the box plus have to purchase server credits to do certain things like unlocking phones.

You can do a lot of stuff with these boxes (i.e. take off pattern locks, remove iCloud, unlock phones, flashing, changing imei numbers, fix no signal errors...) but there's basically no English instructions available online. It's almost as if the Indians have some sort of agreement not to post instructions in English.

Some of the popular boxes are z3x pro box, octopus box, Chinese miracle 2. Some boxes specialize in different brands. Like z3x is supposedly very good for Samsung phones and IP box v3 is good for apple phones.

A big forum with a ton of information about this is
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/index.php

@Naftuli19 I'm going to guess he used one of these boxes

Follow up with seller, if he can't help in unlocking just return it after contacting ebay with the issue.

I'm hoping someone can help!

I have a Verizon iPhone 6, and my service provider is Page Plus (TracFone Wireless) - on a monthly prepaid plan.

I'm in Israel now and rented a SIM card to use here, but it seems my iPhone is locked (which I had no clue about), so the SIM card is useless and I don't have a phone!

I spoke to a couple of cell phone stores here and they told me it costs ~$250 to unlock it, because that's how much Verizon will charge. They're basically just passing on the charge.

Page Plus customer service says they can't unlock it, because the phone isn't one of theirs.

Verizon Wireless customer service says the show it's unlocked, but it's only unlocked in the US, and since I'm overseas, I have to bring the phone to a local Israeli location for it to be physically unlocked.

I'm working remotely from here for the next 10 days and need a phone.

Does anyone know how to get around this? I'm pretty desperate. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

TIA
