Title: Ethiopia Master Thread
Post by: yas on July 21, 2012, 10:35:44 PM
A quick search did not pull up any existing threads dedicated to Ethiopia, so here we go...

I have a 16 Hour stopover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADD) 6:10am-10:15pm.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this place-

Is it safe for a religious Jew.
Visas.
Things worthwhile to do there.
hotels.

Thanks.

there is a Sheraton there category 6.

There is a large market there though it was targeted in the pasts by terrorists.

Thanks Fan Of Dan,
Cat 6 is slightly above my budget for a day stopover, i would like a cheap hotel to get a shower and maybe some sleep.

I would love to hear from someone that flew Ethiopian and had a similar stopover.

There is a Jewish community there. One of the lost tribes I think they wear cool yalmukas. I have a cousin who was there for 6 months volunteering. Not sure were he is now though.

If it helps to know about the actual flights and airport, I have someone I can ask. (lounge kind of things he won't know)

In the end, during our 16 hour stopover Ethiopian airlines paid for a very decent hotel and transportation to the hotel and back to the airport.
The airline decided to stick another African girl who was on our flight back to DC on our hotel reservation (which is a story for itself). It was funny that they did not let her leave the hotel, but for 20 dollars they were more than happy to drive us around the city for several hours.

The poverty in the city of Addis Ababa is the poorest I ever saw,  and its the supposed to be the wealthiest in the country by far.
Wherever we went we had crowds of people surrounding us trying to sell us junk, and collect money of course.
It was a very cool experience but not sure if I will do it again especially with the wife :P

The day we were there was Ramadan and all the big markets were closed. We just went to some of the smaller ones.

We brought with us food from the restaurants in Thailand.

Did you fly Ethiopian Airlines 787 there?

Nope.
From Bangkok- Ethiopia was a very old plane. From Ethiopia-DC was a newer 777.  This was in the summer right around when they introduced the 787.

In ET now.
16 stopover. ET airlines gave me a free hotel and visa.
There is active chabad here.
FYI ET airlines will not short check a bag to ADD, even on a 16 hour stopover. They're worried I'm doing Hidden city

I started having Internet access regularly, I couldnt really do it from the South african Bush.
I think things are more collected and organized if I write them later.
I have a 3.5 day train ride to write a TR ;)

Does anyone have info besides for a short layover?
I am thinking of stopping in ADD for 2-3 days and want to know if there is anything to do and if it is doable with a 1.5 year old baby.

Anyone have experience? Shabbos? Day trips? Hiring a driver?
Thanks!
@Emkay
