It's a good thing R Yehuda hanasI started with Brochos. You get into it while it's easy and fun, and you keep going with the harder ones after you've developed a routine. Imagine if the daf YomI cycle began with yevamos!

...or didn't end with Nidah.
Althoug, Eiruvin (near the begining) isn't too easy.

I hate a shiur learned by a lecturer, I love learning with a partner. So I can't decide whether I'm ready to commit myself to finish a daf each day. Even shabbos???
-
i just finished nidda tonight (hence my bbq) but it was very hard and very time consuming, i happen to be in yesh, and i had no time to review what i learnt from the morning sedar so i fell even more behind.
and i understand even more people who work as well, if one can do it though the feeling of finisheing and have a set sedar every day no if and or buts, its a gr8 feeling
-
You finished??
Congratulations!!
Who else on DDF finished?
-
not finished but did nidda, and a whole bunch others with the daf, iyh gd willing my biggest gola set in my life is to really finsih :-)

I better get at least a few +1's, according to the 'where did you learn' survey there are a handful of you that will laugh when reading this.

Can anybody recommend a good shiur in English to be able to listen to in the car?

I would suggest rabbi grossman. If your looking for a shuir on mainly the Gemara and explained very well and rashis spoken out and even tos, and such. It's free download of a daf or even a full mesechta. It's dafyomi.org.

go to torahanytime.com and there are plenty of speakers- on many different subjects. You can download for free, and put them on an ipod and listen in the car... some are actually quite interesting..

Check out dafaday.com
Very nice audio visual presentation of the daf, including the full daf shiur and a quick <5 min review of the daf which is great to start with in order to give a good outline of the daf, or as a tool to review after.
I know the Magid shiur- he is a great engaging speaker.

Edit- Each daf has 3 separate parts.
1) A 2 minute audio visual overview before learning the Daf to give you the structure of the Daf.
2) The actual shiur which seems to be aprox 30-35 min which has the actual Oiz Vehadar daf that can be zoomed in and out (it works great on my Android S3 as well!) with a small video player of the magid shiur in the top corner that floats above the daf and size of the player can be adjusted.
3) A 5 minute review of the Daf which is great for a quick chazara.

do people that do Daf yomi make a Siyum after each Mesechta they finish ??

I never made one either and for that reason I started the daf. I figured, to finish a mesechta in about 2 months is a pretty good start....

+1 My Chavrusa and I finished Brochos like 2-3 weeks ago, we're a third of the way through eiruvin and will get back to Shabbos when we're done. Not quite Daf Yomi, but Shas is awesome Ka"H.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I did Eiruvin before Shabbos (don't ask...), so I'm done eiruvin and finishing Shabbos soon.

Loving Pesachim ...!

Loving Pesachim ...!
todays daf was very difficult.
-
dafhachayim.org is the best daf yomi website IMO. very clear, concise, a separate one minute intro, and a five minute summary. And they have a great android app (and iphone i think).

It's rough until the second perek. But from there is smooth sailing

It's worth putting in the Time to fully understand the laws of טומאה what makes what and what gets passed on. After that you'll have smooth sailing even through these blatt. My rebbi in fifth grade made us a chart when we learnt this and spent a considerable amount of time on it and I must say that I remember it until today.

Luckily for me, most chassidishe yeshivos learn the sugya of ר' חנינא סגן הכהנים.
-
I'm having a grand old time with these few blatt. All this stuff I never really understood.

Mazel Tov on those that finished Yoma today.

Anyone understand why Shamai hazoken held that it is a chumra to put a new born baby in the succa?
Chinuch? TIA
-
Reminds me of one of the Rebbes put on a kappel on his baby son right after birth. He also ended up a big Rebbe.

Katan hatzarich laimo. Not chayav in chinuch of succah

You misunderstood the question. He didn't ask why it's only a chumrah.
-
You misunderstood the question. He didn't ask why it's only a chumrah.
Oh. Well then what's the question: kol hapatur midavar v'osehu nikrah hedyot?
-
Right, Why is it a chumra to have a newborn baby sleep in the succa? The baby is not chayav, neither is the parent obligated.
ETA
Unless you say that the baby is indeed mekayem mitzvos....R' Moshe holds like this. (cant remember where)Young children who keep mitzvos are actually fully performing the mitzva. -Like R chaim soloveitchik by hilchos korbon pesach (koton sehigdil bein shnei pesochim is pottur from pesach sheini, because he was yotzeh...)

I assume that R' chaim doesn't apply to a tinok ben yomo.
I would guess that the chumra is somehow sleeping in a succah would be entrenched into the baby and have an effect on him spiritually/inspire his chinuch
-
I assume that R' chaim doesn't apply to a tinok ben yomo.{maybe}
I would guess that the chumra is somehow sleeping in a succah would be entrenched into the baby and have an effect on him spiritually/inspire his chinuch{Wouldn't call that a "chumra}
Coming back to me now. Interesting: R moshe proved from the fact that we are not mevatel tinokos for binyan beis hamikdosh, that they are indeed being mekayem a mitzva mideorayso, not just going through motions.
R' Aharon on the other hand, proved from "ein haolom miskayem ela al hevel pihem shel tinokos" that "torah is a cheftzeh that is mekayem the world,"- not the fulfilment of the mitzva of talmud tora, -because ketanim are only mekayem miderabonon for chinuch.
-
I think the raayos they quote for rav chaim are the ramban by ir hanidachas that you kill tinokos sheavdu. and from gemara in beginning of hachovel that ktanim are chayav to pay back if they are chovel, lkesheyagdil midinei shamayim (plus what you already mentioned-korban pesach and I believe there is a fourth but I can't recall now)
