Title: Passport expedite
Post by: njmacman on July 30, 2012, 04:58:13 PM
HI. My son is leaving for Israel in 3 weeks and now realizes he needs a new American passport (we are in NJ). The regular expedite process from the passport center in  our library says we can have it by August 24 (too late). How can we get it faster (hopefully in NJ)? Thanks.

the safest way is to just go to the passport agency in person.

That's what I ended up doing, and I got it back overnight.

Wait until it is within 2 weeks of the flight.
Schedule an in person appointment at the Philadelphia passport office. (http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_899.html)
They will give it to you on the spot and I don't think it will cost you anything extra. You need to bring proof of your upcoming flight to get them to do it for you.

OR,
you can pay hundreds of dollars to some passport expediting service.....

Depending on where he is in NJ, it may make sense to go to the Passport agency in NYC, as I did.

It will cost $170.00.

For the record, I applied in a Passport office for a child on July 10th, and mailed in my passport for renewal on July 12th.

I just got the new passports in the mail today August 2nd - only 3 weeks later!
Obviously you wouldn't rely on that when you really need it 3 weeks later, but I'm just reporting that their turnaround time is quicker than the 4-6 weeks that they claim.

The turnaround times vary depending on their load. Like you said, you cannot rely on it.

Especially in NYC.

Slightly OT, I have to renew my passport, and I'm too lazy to search (:o), what do I have to bring with me to my local PO?

Old passport and two photos.
When I went to the post office a few weeks ago, they said I only need 1 photo stapled onto the application and gave me back the 2nd photo.  They scan the photo into a computer so they only need 1. Their website says that too. (http://travel.state.gov/passport/pptphotoreq/pptphotoreq_5333.html)

Btw, DON't PAY $10 to get your picture taken - you can get it for free!! (okay, 15 cents)
Take a picture yourself at home with a white wall behind you, make sure there are no shadows, don't zoom in too much on the head - leave some wall above it and some shoulders below it, and upload it to http://www.idphoto4you.com/  select that you need a 2x2 picture and it will help you crop it to the right dimensions and download a 4x6 (or 3x5) with 2 passport pics all ready to go! Print at your local Walmart or Walgreens etc and you get 2 passport pics for 15 cents!

Correct. Think about it - you're coming in with a passport which is pretty much the highest level of ID out there, and requesting a new passport. No more ID needed than the old one.

Come with an expired one and try explaining that to them...
Not sure what you mean.
The passport that you show can be expired - just not more than 5 years expired.
Application says:
Quote
Your most recent U.S. passport book and/or U.S. passport card;
 A certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order if your name has changed;
 Fees; and
 A recent, color photograph.
1. YOUR MOST RECENT U.S. PASSPORT (BOOK AND/OR CARD FORMAT).
 Submit your most recently issued passport book and/or passport card. When submitting a passport book and/or passport card with this form, please verify
that the document was issued at age 16 or older in your current name (or see item #2 below) and issued within the past 15 years.
I assume that when you apply they do a search of their records to determine if there is any reason for them to deny reissuing it. So they have some cutoff point where if they haven't checked into you in over 15 years - they need more ID to reverify who you are. If however they just checked into you 10 years ago, they can verify you easier.

Asher, No need to go to PO, you could just send in the application, old passport, photos and a check or money order for the fee and you will get it back in the mail.

I renewed my passport, and did a name change. I sent in the old passport with the court document about the name change, and got back the new passport + passport card + original document that I sent in in less than 3 weeks

Nice, I sent mine in late last week, let's see when it gets back here...

P.s. surprisingly USPS tracking is pretty current, and is showing me the envelope is already in Philly, so they should have it by tomorrow. I'm in no rush, and it cost me enough already, so I didn't bother paying the $12.72 to get the return expedited. I did say I was anticipating a trip to LHR early September, so maybe that'll cause mine to process quicker...

I didn't expedite it. I paid as follows:
Passport renewal fee (http://travel.state.gov/passport/fees/fees_837.html): $140 ($110 for PP and $30 for PP card)
Passport photos (http://www.copystreet.com/): $8.00 (for six of them, I got lazy and nixed the DIY option).
Priority mail (https://cns.usps.com/go): $4.90 including tracking.
Total: $152.90

If I needed it expedited it would be as follows:
Passport renewal fee (http://travel.state.gov/passport/fees/fees_837.html): $110
Expedite fee: $60.00
Expedited return shipping: $12.72
Passport photos (http://www.copystreet.com/): $8.00 (for six of them, I got lazy and nixed the DIY option).
Priority mail (https://cns.usps.com/go): $4.90 including tracking.
Total: $195.62

It's $80
You paid $120 total?

If it's just $80 then it's definitely worth it as the Passport Agency themselves charges $60 per expedite and they estimate it'll take 2-4 weeks.

I was shocked that it could be so low, so I called them. They said that  the government fee is $170, and their fee is $150 for a total of $320.
http://e-zpassport.com/
As you can see here, the govt fee (http://travel.state.gov/passport/fees/fees_837.html) is indeed $170 ($110 +60) so I don't see how you could have gotten it in 2 days for just $120 instead of $320!!

I just checked again and I see that I paid $110 (not 80 that I previously wrote.)
I just put 2 44 cent stamps on it (foolish as that probably was - it worked).

Now that makes sense, $110 standard fee to "Department of State" (no joke, that's who the official forms say to make the check out to) and $120 to the heimishe expedite agency (who probably pays a fraction of that to the passport issuing agency).

For when I absolutely must (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=10818.msg133031#msg133031) carry ID with me. I guess a non-driver DMV ID would work as well, but the NYC DMV is such a dumb bureaucracy I don't know if I have enough proof of name/address/ID/whatever to even get that issued...

In some cases I can't, like when I expect I'll get carded (e.g. to verify age), or when I need state ID (e.g. for returns in some stores).

I don't like the idea that they think they can stop and ask, in many cases refusing will turn into a power struggle between me and the officer. I prefer to just say I don't have any ID on me, and they can't do anything to me because there's no law requiring me to carry ID (AFAIK).

So now you are talking about law enforcement?  ???

I'll start from the beginning:

I don't believe I should have to carry ID with me, so I don't (on principle) unless I have to.

The רישא is about law enforcement, the סיפא about needing to show ID in non-LE situations.

then i called ez passport and they scheduled me for an app at the post office and that cost me 140 + 25 (postal fee) and of course i forgot pictures so +15 (for 2 pictures)  and then i had to take the sealed envelope to somestore in monsey and give them a 100$ check, and the passport will be done in 4 days!

so total was
280 for 4 day service!

Yes. I was there (in Philly) for a total of one hour.

They said the passport would be ready in three days, as they only do on the spot if you can prove that you're travelling within two days. I had a friend pick it up for me when it was ready. It took him 10 minutes.

Total cost: $170

No, who needs the post office? I printed out the form online, filled it out and mailed it to the passport office in philly.
Is that just for renewal? How bout a first timer, do they need to appear in person?

so heres an update. i had a boy 2 weeks ago and bh the hospital let me have 10 days from birth to fill in my sons name. which i did on day 9 and the next day had his birth certificate done.

then i called ez passport and they scheduled me for an app at the post office and that cost me 140 + 25 (postal fee) and of course i forgot pictures so +15 (for 2 pictures)  and then i had to take the sealed envelope to somestore in monsey and give them a 100$ check, and the passport will be done in 4 days!

so total was
280 for 4 day service!

Does anyone else have any experience getting a birth certificate and PP very soon after birth?  Does one need a SSN to get a PP?

I was told it can take a few weeks to get the PP.  Can anyone do what you did?  Was it because you showed proof that you were flying and thats why it went so fast?

Is it YMMV with this type of thing?

i applied to re-new my passport on 1/2- it's coming in the mail today, 1/15

but if i NEEDED it by this time, i would have chosen to pay to expedite it... you never know if it will take longer when you just pay the regular amount. this was just standard processing.

Do you need it expedited? If the answer is no, just go down to the County Clerk and do it there or mail in the application (Instructions (http://travel.state.gov/passport/renew/renew_833.html)), you'll save a nice couple of $.

Those '24 hour' services are very expensive and not necessary unless needed immediately.

I can't speak for Philly but when I left Israel in June earlier this year I realized the day of my flight that  my passport expired three months prior. I went down to the New York city passport office downtown which with no appointment and was able to show my itinerary showing my flight for that night.  Thankfully I was walking out of there with my new passport about an hour and a half after showing up to stand in line. I would never plan on it but they really saved me and got me out of there fast. If you just show up you may have a better shot to get it sooner.

Hi
My family is flying to Israel in less than 2 weeks and just realized that our passports expire within 6 months. We're in nj. The automated schedule said the next appointments in ny, Stamford and Philadelphia are all on or after the day we leave. Any ideas?

Edit: my passport and my wife's, are fine. It's just the kids (7-15) who expire at the end of August. Does that change anything?

No. They have options to book if you are flying within 2 weeks. Go online. They should give you same day appointment if you just show up there as well.

Select that you are flying within the shortest time, you get an appointment, bring proof of your tickets, pay and get your passport on time. It takes an one day in Manhattan.

I know this is technically the opposite of the thread topic, but I'm curious to hear experiences regarding regular renewal by mail. I did new passports for my kids (via post office) and renewal for myself (regular mail) at the same time, exactly 4 weeks ago. The kids passports arrived probably around the 2 week mark, but mine hasn't arrived yet at all. I know the normal time-frame is 6-8 weeks, but seems a little strange.

If you've done a renewal by mail without expedite fees, how long did it take to arrive?

legally- I don't know
practically- you can keep using the old passport until it expires.  It even serves as ID for you on your former name.
After my daughter changed to her married name, she eventually needed to renew her driver's license, so she changed the name on it.  But her passport wasn't expiring yet.  So her newly acquired Global entry is on her single name (and she carries her GE ID when traveling in the USA rather than her passport)

She hasn't changed the name on her passport yet, so she hasn't updated her GE.
I think up thread people said they went without an appointment and it was quick.
If that's true, I would do it when I was already at the airport coming home from a flight.

Just posting based  my recent experience to help anyone needing a passport for a newborn.

1) contrary to what some passport courier services tell you, you can get a passport without an SS number - do yourself a favor and don't wait in till the last few days prior to flying just to see if the card comes in the mail. There is no other way to get the number as per 2 different SS offices.

2) if you are traveling within 2 weeks you can just go down to a regional passport office yourself without an appointment - just make sure both parents are there and you have the necessary forms and ITs including the babies birth certificate.

3) often it can be a whole day experience so be prepared, but it can go quick- all depends on how many people show up.

4) if a birth certificate was issued, you can get a same day copy by going down the the office of vital statistics. If you order it mailed to you, it may take a few weeks after issuance.

4) one thing that I'm not clear on is how quick you can have a birth certificate issued.  We went down to the health department 1 week after birth and were told we can't get a copy bec it wasn't issued by the state, which can take up to 3-4 weeks with no way to rush it (ended up being 2 weeks). I heard from others they went within a week and it was processed in the spot.

Same day passports are issued at the NY Passport Agency in Manhattan. They are closed on Sunday.

If there's any reason to think you might need a passport on Sunday, now is the time to act.

Not sure about the airport, but I don't think that's a thing (maybe someone else can chime in). The emergency basis concept is what the Manhattan office is there for. The airline would likely make you reschedule for a Monday evening flight, and you'd need to go to the Manhattan office Monday morning (or pay an agency to do it for you) and get a same day passport.

My point is, if you have cause to worry about the hypothetical, don't wait for it to become a reality and then need to start scrambling (or be stuck). Go book a refundable flight leaving in 2 days, then go tomorrow to the Passport Agency in Manhattan and get a same day passport (again, or pay an agency to do it for you).
Best case, you don't end up needing it now and the baby has a valid passport good for 5 years.

a couple of ideas:

Can one leave the US with their infant without the infant having a US passport and just take care of the US passport for the infant in Israel at the US consulate?

There is an emergency number you can call and if life or death situation they may be able to arrange for a passport on the spot even on a Sunday?

We filled out a application on Sunday to have our son's first passport made (4-6 week wait). We also gave in checks that were not yet cashed.

Our plans changed and we would like to leave the country asap. I called the passport office and they havent even received the application so they cannot expedite it.

Q: If they do receive it over the weekend will they be able to expited it i.e same day?
Q: If they do receive it over the weekend and cannot expidite it, would i be able to go to passport office and start a new app for same day service?

If they do not receive it I imagine I will have no problem getting same day service from scratch, but then I would like to viod the check on the first application. Is there a problem with that plan?

Thanks

Passport application requires birth certificate, so if you don't have that (due to the circumstances), you'd first need to get one.

Don't know how voiding check would go..
I know if you dispute CC charge from car rental, they will blacklist you. Wouldn't want to take that chance with the US Government  :-\

Read the application:  A recent, color photograph.
That indicates 1.

Someone told me that after sending it in with regular (meaning not expedited) and I see it won’t arrive on time call them up and have them expedited then, can anyone confirm? Also does writing plans of travel at question 19 in applecation but not paying for expedited will it help me anything?
They did offer on the phone an option to expedite at a certain time before travel dates. Don't remember the exact details though. PUTPAC

My daughter is hopefully going to Israel in September.  Her passport, however, expires in November.  About a month ago, the passport office strongly urged me not to file for a new one (she is 17) as it will get lost in the system.  The agent suggested I wait and see what happens.  While there is still time, and I am sure there are others in my boat, does the collective have any suggestions?  I see that the NYC office is opening for phase 1 but seems to be accepting only life and death applications.  Hoping to avoid a 5 am visit the day of her flight.

Thanks.

Precarious situation. It may be worth going to passport office and trying your luck. The biggest issue is that even if Israel does allow students in by September (they don't now), she will likely need a student visa in order to obtain the entry permit to Israel. Israel is not issuing visas now, but when they do, she will need to provide a passport. The biggest concern is that it's very possible that the only way to obtain the visa and/or entry permit will be via a batch application by the school, and if she doesn't have a passport at that time, she may be SOL.

I would try to use the expiring passport and renew it in Israel when she gets there. Elal is known not be strict about the 6 month passport validity requirement.

My wife applied for a passport in January. We got her new passport in March, but her old passport only came today. I guess that means someone there is coming to work...
Not sure what the benefit would be applying later. When they eventually get back to work, won’t older applications be processed before new ones?

I think the problem is that they are closed.  There is nothing to expedite.

I would think that an across the board six month extension from the DOS would solve a lot of problems.

I thought this would be a nightmare with international laws, but it turns out Belarus actually did it.

From USA current entry rules:

Passports issued to nationals of Belarus which have expired between 30 April 2020 and 31 July 2020, are considered valid with an extension of 3 months.

I tried using rushmypassport.com for a renewal, but my renewal was changing from a child's passport (valid for 5 years) into an adult passport (10 years), so they said that they can't do it now - that is considered applying for a new passport, and they are only able to do renewals now.
You can try calling them 877-503-9838

Yeah, correct or maybe find someone you know there or something like that.
I had a friend who needed a passport for his baby... same idea... no appointments available.....he pushed a little and got an appointment the next day.
Make sure to send emails also, even though it says don't send more then once... You have an appointment already so they won't cancel.
Also push by both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. They say there is no real communication between the two regarding these matters.

I have been trying to answer this.  I can tell you that I spoke to Chaim Vchesed in EY this morning.  Consensus is that ELAL will allow boarding even with passports with less than six months on them.  And the gov't does not care; its not their issue.  I also think the passport office is moving more quickly, but maybe not quickly enough.  If you apply now, you have to surrender the passport.  If you don't get the new one on time, you unquestionably won't fly.  For now, I am holding on to my daughter's passport, which expires in Nov.  You have a different coniseration--if the zman is delayed the passport may expire.  Then you are stuck.  Not sure why the State Dept can't extend all passports for six months.

Routine Service (If you live in California, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, or Texas):

                National Passport Processing Center
                Post Office Box 640155
                Irving, TX 75064-0155

Routine Service (If you live in any other state or Canada):

                National Passport Processing Center
                Post Office Box 90155
                Philadelphia, PA 19190-0155

As I posted upthread, my kids passports were processed in Philadelphia within 2 weeks of sending the application. If you live in any state that sends renewals to Philadelphia, you'll probably have it processed very quickly.

Thanks.  I am also holding on to his passport as I am afraid that of I submit it, then I will not have any docs.   The Yeshiva also just told us that the students will need to bring their original birth certificate in order to get the Entry Permit.   They also said that they probably can not get him a Student Visa and therefore no Entry Permit, since his passport is not valid through the end of academic period.

Problem with doing that, is that you have no idea when they will actually get to work on processing your passport. Whenever they do (some people have reported here that they were processed withing 2 weeks of submission), they will right away cancel your old passport. The yeshivos and seminaries that are arranging entry permits for bochurim/girls require your passport number for the permit, and if they put your old passport number we don't know if they will let you in...

I applied in May, and they cashed it 2 days later.
From the passport agency FAQ’s:

Why did you cash my check if you are not updating my passport status?

One of the first steps in the process is handling passport fees. Although we can process fees remotely, we are not able to handle secure documents such as birth certificates at home. Your applications and documents with personally identifiable information are secure. We cannot further process these applications until our staff return to our passport agencies and centers.

You don't need to surrender the old passport. You can just apply for a fresh passport which cost $35 more than a renewal.

Seems like you do.  Someone got a new one without surrendering the old, and the State Dept demanded it be surrendered.

This is news to me.  I was told the exact opposite.

Same here. I applied for my kid in the post office and they took her old passport

I just heard about someone from NJ who sent in a renewal application a few months ago and is still waiting. I can't verify any details, but this can be a possible DP about renewals sent to Philadelphia being delayed.
