Title: Where were you on September 11, 2001?
Post by: sky121 on September 10, 2012, 08:11:46 PM
I saw this topic on Yeshiva World and though it would be an interesting one to have here.
It's crazy that it was 11 years ago already. I remember the day well.  They brought out TV's... Us "younger" kids weren't allowed to watch but I remember looking through the door windows and seeing the rebbeim watching the news and crying. It is etched in my memory to this day. Personally I don't think the magnitude of the day really hit me until a few years later when I was older watching the news clips myself....

Just finished halacha shiur, walking to breakfast another bachur came outside saying he just heard from the Rob the Janitor that a small plane just hit one of the twin towers and its prob a accident. Few min later the real news came in.

Just finished davening in high school and went up to my brothers dorm room to try and find out what was going on.
We actually had shiur that day. During break I was the only one with a radio (I think it was a CD player, good times) and I was the news man. I remember reporting to people that the towers fell down and not understanding what that meant, how could two buildings just cease to exist.
Spent the rest of the day glued to a TV.

I was 16 years old and had just arrived in beis medresh in LA a couple weeks earlier.

Was sleeping in the old decrepit YOEC dorm and Rabbi Thaler came running down the halls screaming that the one of the twin towers had been hit.

I think I was the only person back then to have a cell phone (just bought it when I arrived in LA) and I was using the 3 lines of text-only internet on my Motorola Talkabout (a Startac derivative) to get updates.  I was also the news guy for yeshiva and I'd keep coming back into the zal and update bochurim and rabbeim as to what was going on.  My rebbi pulled me aside to see if I had a TV that I was getting updates from...internet on a phone was pretty much unheard of back then.  In fact Sprint was still giving away the 2G internet for free to get people to use it.

The LA cops came to checkin on us a few times that day as well.  Until all the planes in the country were grounded there were still rumors of tons of other hijacked planes.

I actually had a ticket to go from LAX-CLE on 09/12 IIRC as CO had strict 30 day max stay then and I had another return ticket for Sukkos and was going to throw away the 09/12 ticket.  In the end I was able to use the 09/12 ticket to come home from yeshiva at the end of the year as the flight was cancelled of course.

My father sent me back to yeshiva after sukkos with a kit of cipro and atropine to keep with me in case of anthrax or nerve gas attack :D

Was in OT elementary at the time. We came in to class at around 10 minutes to 9, and we see smoke coming from the twin towers, as our classroom windows on the 4th floor were facing downtown Manhattan. While we were all glued to the windows, many of us saw the second plane crash and go right into the other tower. At the 11am recess break, many of the teachers on that floor came to our classroom, cuz we had a really good view from there to the burning towers.

Of course Dan was first to have the scoop even back in the day! I was also the same age at the time and found out first in my school because I was taking a "davening break" and was out wandering the empty halls when a secretary told me the news. I then ran into davening telling pple what had happened...no one believed me.

P.S. what does your dad do that he was able to get you the atropine? (not everyone has that in their back pocket....though I do  :) )

I was in Mesivta. Came to the dining room after Shacharis and heard the radio blasting from the kitchen which was weird, but before I had a chance to think about it one of the Bochurim (who was not known to be bright) pounced on me and said that a plane crashed into the twin towers. I was like "yeah right" just as another Bochur said that another plane crashed into the Pentagon. I thought the second Bochur was making fun of the first one but then the radio finally filtered in and i listned in horror together with the rest of the boys as the first tower fell (I have to admit the thought crossing my mind at the time was, what will the skyline look like with only one twin tower). A second before Shiur a Bochur came running down the hall screaming the second tower fell. Now the R"Y was giving a Shiur as if nothing happened, I doubt there was a Bochur in the class who heard a word.
3 weeks later I took a flight home for Succos, there were 7 people on the plane: Me, another Bochur, some business man, a flight attendant, air marshal, pilot and co-pilot. As we were coming in for landing in LGA we flew along the island of Manhattan, I used to love coming in from that direction as the view of Manhattan is amazing. This time we saw all the smoke coming from where the towers were.

we didnt fully understand the severity of it all, until i got home and i was too glued to the tv all night and i rememeber seeing guliani speaking to the press.

though @sky it hit me much later on, but it really hit me at my brothers wedding when my sister in law walked down with her mother....and her brother, bec her father was killed in the attack,

Was in London. Had a flight back to NYC and from there one onto GYE to run high-holiday services there.
Needless to say, I wasn't able to catch my flight back to NYC and, in turn, my flight from NYC-GYE.
(Ultimately United refunded me my way nack from LHR-NYC).
A new trip was arranged from LHR-MAD-UIO-GYE to get there on time for R"H.
I remember davening shachris in UIO and some airport personnel almost ripped out my tefillin off my head saying I had some weird "devices" on...
Also on my UIO-GYE flight I sat next to two Arabs and, to add to my nervousness, the flight was as turbulent as ever.. One of the arabs slowly pulled out a handwatch from his shirt pocket as the plane was running for takeoff, looked at it and put it back into his pocket.. My head started playing all kinds of movies...
Yes, everyone was terrified as the new were fresh..

As kids i remember every time we drove from the Ohel to Ch there's a stretch -as soon as you get of the belt onto the cunduit before it splits to Linden, where you were able to see the twin towers, and we would love pointing them out. I haven't thought about it untill recently when I was driving there with my wife and I saw the Freedom Tower going up in the exact same place. I got a little emotional, tried explaining it to my wife but she's an Out-of-towner and didnt really get it

i was in Class then (Rabbi Weimer in HAC). it was right after shachris and his wife -the secretary- came in and whispered something into his ear. then he became very serious, he told us that the world trade center has been hit. then his wife came in again to tell him about the 2nd one. - she was the only one in the school who listened to the radio every morning.
now, a kid like me that i was, brought up in a frum house with no television or internet (well there wasnt much) didnt really know what the WTC was. i only knew about the twin towers, i didnt know they were called WTC :) so i asked my rebbi, what the world train center was!! lol

I was working Downtown at the time. I came out of the Broad street M station at 9:05 am and it was literally raining glass, papers, debris-5 blocks away. We had no idea what happened one person said "oh i think the stock exchange was bombed" (we were standing in front of the SE at the time)  I remember thinking no wonder there is so much paper falling.  Then as I walking toward Broadway people were telling us what happened I headed to the office instead of walking one block over to Trinity St. to see the WTC.  When the second tower fell our building literally swayed.  We ended up walking home over the Brooklyn bridge back to Brooklyn. The debris was knee deep...I can still remember the acrid smell of the city in the weeks after that

I was in elementary. I heard at first from a friend that a small plane hit the WTC by mistake. Then I heard it was terrorists and that they have a bunch of plants that they hijacked. I eventually heard that both towers were hit, and that one of them toppled. From looking out the window in school I was able to see tons of smoke and what I imagined be a half standing tower.

Later that day I sat glued to the TV for hours, trying my hardest to digest what took place in the previous hours. I now regret never visiting the towers when I lived so close to them.

Was in elementary with windows facing lower manhattan, couldn't see the towers but remember it going from being a gorgeous morning without a cloud in the sky and all of a sudden it seemed so cloudy. Kids came in said that the towers were hit and that there were cops talking with the principal in front of the building. Of course I didn't believe them. We were dismissed early, I remember there was paper EVERYWHERE. Was glued ot the tv for the rest of the day. I think only ch 13 worked for a while unless you had cable tv because the broadcast antennas for the other channels were on the WTC.

I was in Brooklyn on the way to Yeshiva and saw all the smoke and papers falling... Heard / saw tons of emergency vehicles rushing.
Found out a few minutes later what happened, so I went to the roof of Derech Chaim and saw the tower(s) smoking away, I turned to a friend and said "you wanna go there"? so we went to the F train and got the last one into Manhattan before they shut down the subway system. On the way though there is one area where everyone in the train was able to see the towers, and everyone was wondering what happened so I said a plan hit the towers and the train just got deadly silent.
After we got into Manhattan they announced the subway was being evacuated due to an on going emergency.
So we walked towards ground zero, it was after the 1st tower fell as we were dodging ppl that were pull of white soot. We got pretty close when we finally decided its probably a stupid idea to try to get closer, we eventually walked back to Brooklyn over the Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge (I don't remember which one it was).

Wow. I didn't realize the average age of the DD folks!
Anyway, I was coming back with an ambulance from dropping off a patient in Maimodides hospital (Hatzolo call) when one of our members, downtown, started screaming about the plane into the building. I made a left on Ocean Parkway, told the dispatcher I'm heading into downtown, picked up a medic and went with a crew to help out. We were stationed across the street and the building came down on us. There's tons more to the story, but I'm sure everyone read all about it from all the newspapers and magazines. I still cannot believe this happened. I'm going to check out the video someone posted before. I have the CD with the dispatching, but no video and I actually hear mysef saying I'm going in.
We should never have these situations in the future.

I was in a local large grocery (the old Friedman's) that had the radio on loud speaker playing a news station as usual.  When I walked in and heard the discussion about the pilot who mistakenly flew into the WTC, I asked someone if that was real or some joke!  Then the report came that the second tower was hit.
I went home and called my sister and plugged in my old TV.  We watched it over the phone together, were horrified, cried a little.
I later felt bad that I didn't think to say tehilim.

My husband could see the tower swaying with the fire.  He told people in his office it looked like it would fall, but the concept was beyond anyone's imagination.
My son's Rebbe (5the grade?) kept going back and forth to the office for updates to tell the class.  He didn't have the class say tehilim either.
Bais Yakov elementary school in BP forbid the teachers to talk about it ALL day.  They were worried about kids with relatives in the WTC.  So my girls knew nothing until I told them when they came home!

I was on the West Coast as a youth director for a Chabad House.
the Shlucha called me about 8 my time to wake me up and told me to listen to the radio.
I still remember the radio announcer saying - for those of you who are just getting up now....

I was shocked!! I was also scared about the Plane that crashed in PA bec thats where my family lived.

I called my sister on shluchos overseas and the second she heard my voice she burst out crying. She heard the news over there - that NY was bombed (prob not much more details then that) and she couldnt get through to anyone in my family (in NY or PA) for the last 2 hours.

My husband who was on shlichus as a bochur overseas was not able to get home for yom tov.

I was doing shlichus in Wildwood, NJ.

I had slept in that morning and didn't go to Atlantic City for shachris as I usually would've.
I had finally woken up and was about to step in the shower when the guys got back from minyan. One of the guys came in the apt and started saying how a whole bunch of planes were hijacked and the WTC was knocked down and the Pentagon was hit and there are more missing planes (that's pretty much how he said it.) I didn't believe him, I was sure he was joking. Even when he turned on the radio I still didn't believe it, I was sure it was some kind of hoax or something like the War of the Worlds broadcast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_(radio_drama)#Public_reaction), after a few minutes of listening to the radio I realized that it was real...

I don't remember much else from that day other than mivtzah tefillin being more successful than usual, and being in a store with a tv on when WTC 7 came down.

My initial reaction is the 9/11 is different from 11/22, but that's probably just because I remember the former and not the latter. People who remember JFK describe that day similarly - everyone remembers where they were, etc. Only difference I can think of is that 9/11 has always been known and remembered by its date. Everyone knows that JFK was assassinated, but people who weren't alive don't remember the date.

I think 9/11 will always be in the American psyche as the day was always so integral to the reporting (9/11 attack) versus JFK where it was the JFK assassination and not the 11/22 assassination.

Plus 9/11 changed this nation a whole lot more than JFK's assassination.  Things like the TSA, Snowden, and tons of other stuff would never come into being without 9/11.

Though it is crazy talking to my younger brother who wasn't even alive on 9/11.  Hard to comprehend not living through the horror of that day.

I guess so but it's still different than 9/11 in the sense that those attacks were known as Pearl Harbor (PCMIIW) not as the date 12/7.

I think that while both events were different, they both affected the nation as a whole.
There have been many presidential assassinations.  Sure security around the president gets tighter each time, but it doesn't really change people's daily lives.  The nation is mush bigger than any man.

9/11 was entirely different and effected the nation on a much deeper level than a presidential assassination.

Also not sure I would agree with that notion. A presidential assassination would affect everyone as they now have a new president. (Think LBJ with Vietnam) But 9/11 primarily affected NYC, the Pentagon and the poor people that were on those flights.

I'm already telling the grandchildren. 12 years is a long time in kids years! They find it so hard to comprehend. Actually, even though I spent a full day there, I still do not believe it happened. Right after it happened, I wrote my impressions of the day and am keeping it for my family. As far as comparing it to the JFK story, they were both horrible, but totally different events. But 9/11 primarily affected NYC, the Pentagon and the poor people that were on those flights.
And anyone who has flown since 9/11.
And it totally changed America's perspective on terrorism, national security etc.

All of those things are a result of being at war, no diff than what we did in the 40's w german and asian americans. There was some major upheaval then too. there were designated camps for asian americans then because we were scared. Those are all effects caused by PH same as TSA and NSA by 9/11. If and when this war ever ends for America, things should go back to how they were.

Diff Enemy, Diff times, Diff methods, Diff ideals, but the idea is that now we are at war, we are scared so we allow more freedoms to be taken away as a country. This has been done numerous times since Lincoln and maybe even earlier. However just because now it doesn't seem to be that way, should America ever find itself not at war with the radical muslims (s/t Mr. Obama seems to be working very hard to accomplish at all costs) there is no reason to assume that security will not become more lax.
Two reasons actually to assume it will,
1. cost of operating such high(?) standards
2. loss of privacy (rights)

In fact we are already beginning to see some push back in regards to point 2.

Unfortunately, this isn't a war we can ever win.
It's nothing like any conventional war in the past.  Japan was bombed to defeat, life went back to normal.

If you really think life is going to go back to normal and we'll be boarding airplanes without security checks once again then you're delusional.  This isn't a war we can win.

We may not ever win, but we could get to a point where Americans decide that our economy and Freedom is more important to us than the 'War on Terror'.

Maybe not exactly but some of the major restrictions may be lifted. Security checks lessened. CMMIW but already they are not as intense as immediately post 9/11. As time goes on some things have been added as a response to new developments (liquids were not prohibited at first) but others have become more lax.
The determining factor IMO will be what is a cost effective way to provide adequate security. If something will give security but cost too much it will not be implemented. If it will be a cheap solution (machines vs. humans) than it prob will stay even if the threat level isn't as great.

So the war will never end in the sense that ppl will hate and look for ways to harm. Therefore I do not believe we will be able to board planes w/o security checks in place. I don't think anybody disagrees with that, but the fact remains that
it totally changed America's perspective on terrorism, national security etc.

Exactly what programs are in place and how intrusive they are will fluctuate, but the country has changed forever. And I don't believe that's something that can be said about the Kennedy assassination.

-1. I have no idea what you're talking about. And I flew in the weeks before and after 9/11.

Now we can't bring liquids through, we take off our shoes, we allow the government to see through our very clothes just to board a plane.  In NYC you even have to state your name ::)
None of that was true on 09/20/11.

Aside for precheck, the TSA has only gotten crazier as time goes on.

Those all got added as a result of other ppl trying new shtick. (underwear bomber, bomb in shoe, liquid explosives etc.)
But aren't some of the restrictions that were added being pulled back a little? some airports do not require removing shoes, you can bring (slightly) larger containers of liquids. You can now bring small scissors on board. (really small)
The extreme measures go in effect for a while and then are brought back down when they are too crazy.

Even Pearl Harbor is different.
Sure it set off a chain of events which totally impacted and changed the entire world. 1,000,000x greater than 9/11's impact.
But how much of that was a direct outcome of PH?  I'm not so sure...

Have the events of Pearl Harbor itself (not that what it dragged us into WW2 and everything that came as a result) changed the country?

True, but by the same token 4≠Many, many is a quantity not a precentage.
I'd disagree there.
Most people would say I have many siblings.
Many is definitely relative.  If 4 commercial planes had fatal crashes this year that would be way too many!

The "new shtick" just goes to prove that we're never going to win this type of war.  In fact arguably we've already lost as the self-inflicted damages after 9/11 are truly massive and ongoing...

Which airports don't require removal of an adult's shoes?? (Again, not talking about pre-check enrollees)
Which airports allow liquids over 3 ounces?
Sources please!!!

Right, but the fact that there's even a TSA, and that we're discussing what they should or shouldn't allow through is a result of 9/11

If not for 9/11 they would've looked at the shoe bomber and underwear bombers as one-off incidents and not changed the whole policy because of them.
Again,
it totally changed America's perspective on terrorism, national security etc.

I wasn't in town then but my family told me that the whole Crown Heights smelled like smoke.

In fact 3 weeks later, right before Sukkos, I had a flight into LGA (the flight was empty, 7 people and that's including 2 pilots, a flight attendant and an air marshal). And as we were about to land we were flying along Manhattan and there was still a huge pillar of smoke where the WTC stood.

I found it to be an interesting tidbit of information that I didn't know (and I assume most people didn't know as well).
I had largely assumed that fighter jets were delayed from being scrambled, etc. because no one really knew the planes were hijacked at such an early stage.

Yeah, I found it interesting that fighters were scrambled, they just couldn't find the plane on time.

Although the truth is the jets probably wouldn't have stopped the attack even if they found AA11, no one dreamed they would crash it into a building so they wouldn't have shot it down....

I had plans to meet friends to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to our favorite Borders book store, at the WTC.

My current neighbor was a high-powered broker working on one of the high floors, got slammed into a wall when the plane hit, lost coworkers/friends.  To this day she doesn't like to talk about it.

My current neighbor was a high-powered broker working on one of the high floors, got slammed into a wall when the plane hit, lost coworkers/friends.  To this day she doesn't like to talk about it.
What was the highest floor with survivors?

Thats where I found it on Motzei Shabbos. They moved it after 7 World Trade collapsed. It was parked across from Bank of New York 101 Barclay Street around the corner from where I found it. Wish I could find pic of that corner because when I pulled up there, there was a plane engine on the ground on that corner.

Will never forget driving down Broadway from Midtown watching the buildings billowing smoke like two smokestacks. Everyone was walking uptown and only us mishugoyim were driving down there.

I think in the north tower there were survivors in the 87th floor range. In the south tower I dont think anyone above the fire line survived.

I was on my way to work in Piscataway  NJ. As soon as heard  that the first plane hit the WTC, I called  my wife  to tell her there was a major terrorist( before it was confirmed)  attack in NYC as several of our  friends worked at the OU near the WTC.
Several minutes later I heard  a second plane hit the WTC  and was terrified  WW III  would soon break out.

As Hashgochoh Protis goes , I was supposed to have  a meeting  on Maiden Lane on 9/11 , but was cancelled   for an unknown reason a week earlier. Hashem has   His hand in everything.

Ironically, my father was niftar, 8 years later on 9/11. Although is not the Jewish yahrzeit of Meir ben Eliyahu Hacohen z"l (Mr. Milton Bloom), it is the anniversary date corresponding to the English date September 11 .My father's  mission was to support and secure Eretz Yisroel. He believed we as Jews will be strong only if Israel is strong.I know what America meant to my dear father . It meant the safety and security of all . On September 11 , the attack on our nation was not only a physical attack but an attack on everything we stand for ... My father i was a Veteran  WWII  and very active in the Jewish War Veterans , who fought for the rights of what democracy means , the freedom of making choices and the right to live in freedom and with security.  He was a man of conviction and strong principles..and on September 11 , eighteen years ago America would never be the same.  So when my father left this World on September 11 it was a reminder that we have take on the mission of continuing to fight for our rights and hate antihuman conduct..May his memory be a blessing and may his hopes and prayers for Israel and America come to fruition ..I salute you Dad  and may G-d bless America and Israel.

You can see the plane hit in one corner of the building, while there's another 3/4 or let's say 2/4 from where the plane hit, unless the explosion caused the entire floor to be blocked due to the smoke and fire which made it impossible to go down.

Can one imagine such a מיתה?
A מיתה משונה , one realizes that there's two planes which hit into the buildings and with such an explosion that leaves every one above it to become a karbon and realize his life is over and waiting for what to happen, the concept of a person to know there's 20 minutes left to his life.
Hali'vay if us who are given 120 Years to live we realize that each and every minute is another gift from the one above and never shall be taken for granted!
Aside for one with all his body parts and being fully functional!
    מי באש ומי במים...
And I'm sure it's no different like what Happened multiple times over the summer with a person drowning because of water, suffocating and try to catch ones breath to survive!

May the nishomos be an Aliyah for all of us and beh this coming year be zoche to the final geula and not have to suffer any further!

My uncle was on an elevator from the sky lobby on 79 to his office on 104. I imagine he was just below where the plane hit. I don't know if he is the highest floor that had a survivor, but others came down from 79 with him.

If memory serves, there was a widely published story about a frum man (I believe his name was biegelisen, but not sure) who was above the fire line, and called his family - knowing he wouldn't survive. He had an opportunity to talk with his wife and children before the phone went dead.

Worse than that, to me, are the dozens of people who knew they were in that matzav, who literally chose to jump to their deaths so that their bodies would be found, rather than burned to a crisp.

   Wow Miracles of miracles...

As much as we look at what happend and how everything that happened was orchestrated from the one above, we humans can never understand, only to better ourselves, but just to look at what happened to many people, where they were suppose to be, here and there at that time and why they weren't in the buildings, how and why it was canceled, why they missed the flight and all the outright miracles one saw from the whole thing.

I stood next to an FBI agent on West Street and saw through his binoculars 2 scenes that haunt me and probably will for the rest of my life. One was a gentleman in a suit who had jumped with his tie fluttering in the wind. The second, a man and woman who had tried to fashion a parachute out of some cloth (window shades or tablecloth) and jumped. Needless to say that didnt work.

I don't personally know anyone who died, but I know of people who worked in the financial district and struggled to get home/get in touch with family. I also know of people who were late to work because of Selichos that day and probably survived as a result.

I remember reading a story of someone who got out of the buildings and was walking north, wanting to call home, but there were long lines at every payphone. At a cetain point, he realized that the people at the upcoming payphone were clean, in contrast to his dust-coated figure. He went to the front of the line. No one considered stopping him.
