Title: SkyTeam Award Search Tips
Post by: AJK on November 10, 2012, 10:15:17 PM
Well, there's a master thread for star alliance search tips (and now for One World),  so here's the one for SkyTeam.

Tip #1:

Don't use ST.

When using the AF search calendar, they'll often show a route with low taxes, but when I click through to the flight options, it disappears.

Also, if you're looking to book DL w/ AF miles, and you're flying to a city that DL doesn't have international service with, you'll find very few options, if any at all. You'll have better luck searching to the international getaway city, and then paying for your own transportation to that city.

Just call AF and book it to that city...

DL has little low level domestic availability. I don't think calling will help.

So how does this have to do w having int'l service from that airport?

He means flying the domestic leg to the gateway city on an int'l trip. Since those legs are usually not available (at DL's lowest tier), find your own way there and book from the gateway to the destination.

If it's a sky team partner then yes, besides not all DL flights on DL.com can be booked by partners.

What's your question?

I said KLM can see DL low-level.

You said:

not all DL flights on DL.com can be booked by partners.

I assume that's coming to add something, and not just repeat what I said, so I assume you meant to say that even some low-level DL cannot be booked by ST members.

ETA: Or were you making a distinction between a ST member and a non-ST member?

I was coming to add that even if it was showing on AS, it's possible that KLM can't book it ex: AA, BA etc. (which you didn't say)

Which is why I wrote

If it's a sky team partner then yes

Once I wrote that I wanted to clarify and repeat that not everything on DL.com can be booked by KLM. (Just in case he read my comment and not yours)

I was trying to book a lowest level and saw it available on Dl.com, as, and klm.com but it wouldn't book on klm. Multiple agents at klm said it wasn't really available and they couldn't book it. And then I booked it on delta.com...

KLM showing availability JFK-CDG in J for 62K, this is their low level, correct? I keep on calling AZ and they say it's not available. I even challenged them by asking for a DL JFK-TLV Business class availability and they were able to confirm that it's available. They claim that they are checking O (which is business award class) class and its not available. Tips?

If AZ does indeed not allow OW, I believe KLM is the way to go.  Korean would be 60k - they transfer instantly from Chase UR, I have no idea how much YQ. Maybe PUTPAC and let us know...

i agree need to be "dumb" to pay to transfer --unless ur a few thousand short and in a hurry to book and that is only way  -  save time n trouble if when someone needs an answer they explain what they have in mind -- did he need  50k to be transferred to book today or 2k  ???

This is what I have:
Chase  58000
LH miles & more me 55000
LH miles & more wife 55,900
BA AVIOS 56,000
US AIRWAYS 59,000
United Wife 68,000

I need to find a way to get 5 people on flights to and from NYC to SLC in January. The trip is for a week and its from Jan (m.shbs)17 or (sun)18. The return date is flexible regarding before or after shabbos.

It seems like Delta and Jetblue are the only ones with direct flights so that's why its here.

So it seems a lot of discussion on this thread is about booking Flying Blue through Delta. Is there a way to do the reverse? I found an AF flight I would like but it's not showing up on delta.com for the award travel (but it does for a non-award search) and I have a whole bunch of Delta SkyMiles. Is there a way to book this using my SkyMiles? In fact, is there a way to find out how many SkyMiles it would cost?

Are you sure its available for miles? Just because it shows up for a paid ticket doesnt mean its available for miles.
Why not just PUTPAC (Delta) to find out if its available?

tried booking award delta flight with sky pesos miles tlv-nyc O/W after Jan 1, 2015 but still showed 85,000 miles,  I thought after Jan 1, 2015 you can book one ways for half the points???

Have you guys generally found it to be the case that if a classic award that shows up on FB site doesn't show up on delta.com, you can't book it with skymiles? The DL rep I spoke to last night said if it's not on delta.com, there's 0 chance it's bookable with skymiles. I know it's always worth calling DL anyway, but just as far as your experiences go.

For some reason, Delta doesn't have access to all FB space released to partners.

1st DL agent said we don't book awards on GOL. Click.
2nd agent priced out a 3 leg trip at 37.5K and said stopovers don't apply to GOL

Quote from Jaywhy in the Brazil TR
"Just a side point. Delta partners with both Gol and Aerolineas Argentinas and offers coach redemptions within Southern South America for 25k RT. Combine that with a stopover and an open-jaw and you can really hop around Brazil and Argentina for cheap.
I had put GRU-GIG, GIG-IGU, IGR-EZE on hold with DL but the hold expired prematurely and the seats for GIG-IGU never went back into inventory so we had to buy some flights and use Avios instead. I found the Gol experience to be very good for a LCC. The seats had decent pitch and they handed out snacks and drinks. "

Also do they still require the fax gesheft?

Easiest way is to open an account in your wife's name and have them transfer the ressy to her account, but the 2 ressy's will be linked.

Make sure to have them add you and your wife's DOB to the ressy and you should be able to ticket it online.

Yes, whats the question.
What should I expect?
How could I get an idea of what 10% of full fare will be? If there's a phone booking fee, will they waive it?
What's the policy for changes and cancellations on the INF?

Different reps gave me different 10% fares, plus it's not really practical to call them dozens of times to find out the exact price.
As for the other questions, I couldn't get clear answers from the reps.

Im assuming it's on AF metal.

No clue about changes or cancellation, I would ask them about this.

Regarding the 10% it's like UA, Each rep will give you a different amount.

I would check to see how much the online price is and if it's 10% or less go with that or you can play HUCA.

I couldn't find anywhere where this has been discussed, If I am posting in the wrong place please excuse me...

1. United has an awesome feature called Expert Mode where you can see their 'Inventory', Is there anywhere where I can see Delta's inventory (mainly for award space)
2. Delta's award seat fare codes as of now are Economy- saver N, standard ND, peak NK, Business- saver O, standard OD, peak OK. Do we know what the new two levels will be?

What new change :-[?
Thanks for the response.
Basically I want direct JFK-TLV DL J flight, when I search on AF (late Aug, early Sept (I booked a LHR-TLV flight today for 9/8 so now I want to get to Israel 1-2 weeks before that date)) it only shows flights with stopovers. Am I doing anything wrong? Is this a hard ticket to secure, maybe especially at that time?

ETA: But DL.com has direct options.

They removed their award charts, so you don't even know what "low-level"--what is available to partners--is anymore.

JFK-TLV is definitely one of the harder awards to snag, especially on DL metal.

If DL is showing lowest level availability on the charts they PULLED, available on DDMS, then it's possible you're searching incorrectly.

So this (http://i.dansdeals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/delta36.png) chart says that US49-Middle East in J is 70k one way in lowest level. Everything I see on DL.com looks like 162,500 per person, for all the upcoming months. Unless PEBKAC...

Only "low level" are available to partners. These don't appear to be. Therefore, not available on AF.com.

What's the cheapest ST member to book it from? (Better if can transfer from MR/UR).

DL's "lowest fare" doesn't mean bookable by partners. Lately I haven't seen them open up any awards on that route bookable by partners.

Search one-way, nonstop flights. If JFK-TLV is available at 40k then you can book it with Flying Blue for 25k (xfers from MR & TYP).

ETA- I just searched JFK-TLV on DL and NOT ONE seat is 40k through the end of the calendar. Last year there was tons available at that level. "Lowest" is 85k.

And interstingly, starting in October "Lowest" is 100k in coach.

Does any program transfer into MU's? I believe you can book OW F redemptions directly on their website.

On a side note - while I am not 100% certain - I don't think FB allows it using "Flex" miles but it might be worth looking to make sure.

I checked Delta's site and they won't piece it together either but that leg alone is available  for 37.5k as apposed to the usual 30k, my question is, if the last tier isn't available does that mean it was already released and booked/does it mean that they won't be releasing more to partnering airlines? We all know Korean releases much more J availability to its own members then partner, forcing you to use their site to search availability.
Is it just me or does the Korean site incorrectly show multi leg awards as available when they aren't?

Eg search SIN-LAX in J on 6/5, it'll show as available via ICN
When in reality only SIN-ICN is available, and ICN-LAX would be in Y.
I searched ICN-LAX separately and it showed unavailable.
I confirmed this with phone rep.
Or is it really available, but only as a married segment?

With KE you need to search each leg individually for avialability, then piece it together for miles / taxes.

If booking a RT, some routes it's cheaper taxes to do OW + OW and some routes it's cheaper to book as a RT, so check both options.

A few questions regarding Flying Blue:
1) When booking a r/t NYC-TLV flight, is it possible to get a free domestic trailing flight, or will that incur extra mileage?
2) In Dan's Ultimate Israel Mileage Award Chart posting, he states that it's the "best program for Delta". Does this mean that I can book a flight to Israel on Delta for 50k Flying Blue miles?
3) If I book a flight which then goes on sale ("promo"), would I get a refund for the balance?

Thanks and Chag Sameach to all!

Three times (on three different reservations) i've went to book Delta partner award tickets. Everytime I make the purchase, it errors out for some reason. The space is then pulled from the inventory and not ticketed. Delta of course says that someone else booked it before me. This is the third time it happened. So either I have really bad luck, or delta phone reps have no idea waht they're talking about. In any event, they can't book the award because it isn't in inventory (verified on expert flyer). This seems like an IT glitch - any experience?

Funny, had this exact same thing on DL with MU. They tried calling MU, no luck. I did manage to get it after 2 days.

Side Databpoint. One ticket was booked with cash and because I booked the PVG-JFK flight it ticketed in China time zone and I was able to cancel it with a full day later.

i sent this email to virgin america today if anyone else has any ides how to fix this, it would be appreciated.

To virgin America

I am looking to redeem points on virgin Australia from lax to mel, as of now you can book the lax to Sydney or to Brisbane and connect on to Melbourne, as of the upcoming april thay are starting to fly lax to mel nonstop thay are already marketing those flights and on their website have it available for redemption and even other partners like delta have it. Your rep told me they also see it but cannot book it since they cannot price it out, meaning that for every redemption on partner airlines there is a chart listing every destination [which can be viewed online], however this hasnít been added on yet. I assume it would be 40k round trip economy like lax to syd or Brisbane. I would really appreciate it if you could pass this message on to the right department who take care of this so we can enjoy this new route.

p.s the rep ventured to say that maybe virgin Australia hasnít authorized virgin America to book this route, I find that very hard to believe as literally every other route they fly can be booked.

Looking to maximize 165k DL SkyMiles for roundtrip travel in business/first. Can travel anywhere, Fall 2017.

Is there a search engine that lets you enter origin + number of miles and generates multiple cities?

Not sure.
I would recommend using them for China Airlines maybe to Bali?

If you want direct, you'll have to book with DL since there's on saver availability (which is needed for partners to book).

Using miles for the criteria given, yes.

But look into revenue tickets if you're planning on returning to the US.

I'm trying to book the following:

ORD>JFK>SVO>TLV>ORD

A few questions:

  • This is a legal routing with Korean, see attached screenshot. Does Flying Blue allow this?
  • Delta prices this out at 60,000 when mixing a domestic Delta flight and Aeroflot flights. Does Flying Blue allow mixed partner awards?
  • Does Korean allow one way partner awards?
  • When I search Korean's site for business they say that it's not available. Delta shows both Delta and Aeroflot segments available in business. PUTPAC?
Yes, why wouldn't they?
Yes
No

AF is showing some incredibly weird options right now to go NYC-TLV in Y. For example on 1/12/2018 it shows DL4281 SWF to DTW and then DL468 DTW to TLV (here is a screenshot https://imgur.com/1v7VWUs). This is absurd as A) there is no nonstop flight from DTW to TLV and B) DL468 is Delta's direct flight from JFK to TLV. This option is being shown on many other days as well such as 1/26/18. Does anyone know whats going on? Is this a sign that Delta may finally be releasing some TLV saver award space?

Since the flight plan is JFK to DTW to JFK to TLV, could I check in to the first flight but not get on, and wait for the TLV leg. I would wait in the airport. Would this be considered "missing" the segment?

Yes. When the plane door in DTW closes and your boarding pass wasn't scanned, you'll be considered a no-show and anything remaining will be canceled.

You might be able to call AF and have them remove the first segment (for a change fee). I say might, since it's possible that its a married-segment which is why you can't book / see it as you really want.

I'm trying to search Korean award tickets using the multi-city search and when I search JFK-AMS-JFK, it will show me a direct on the JFK-AMS but route me via DUB or BRU (implying that the trans-Atlantic route is available), but then if I search JFK-AMS, and BRU-JFK it will still show me the direct flight JFK-AMS but won't show me the direct flight BRU-JFK, but rather route me via DUB & AMS. I don't know much about Skypass in general, will they be able to book me the direct flights (JFK-AMS & BRU-JFK) if I call, or can the call centers only book what shows up online?

Saw an AM flight on DL that suddenly disappeared yesterday. I checked FB today, and I see it. Would someone (with a paid EF  subscription) be so kind as to check if it's phantom?

It's going to apply to all airlines as the bulk of it is a tax.

Usually a waste of miles when flying to London as tax is crazy high.
Ba fissure not ,while IB is a bit less.

I found one ticket JFK-TLV on DL468 7/8/19 for 29K FB +$10.10 (or 25400+$50.54, 21800+$90.97)
