Title: Jersey Shore Master Thread
Post by: jack on May 24, 2010, 12:53:50 AM
Anyone have any recommendations for a quick recharge (2-3 days maybe over shabbos) at the Jersey shore - Where to stay?  What to do?  Food?
or would I be better off at Lake George?

Thanks ...

There is a nice Resort in Long Branch (near Deal) called Ocean Place. It is famous for being the Dating lounge for most Lakewood daters. I have never been in the rooms (Although I've done my time in the lounge ::)  ) but its seems to be an upscale resort, nice boardwalk and beach. I don't know if it is walkable to the Syrian community in Deal, but you can prob get takeout food there on Friday.

Ocean Place is very nice, I go there all the time "date busting" (like on the day the "freezer" opens) I checked out the presidental suite its beautiful. I told them I might be coming 4 pesach so they let me check the place out!!!
656 resterant is down the block from ocean place great food but pricey

Don't know about Jersey shore. Lake George is beautiful!!! Later in the summer (after 9 b'av) they have a very cozy daily minyan in a tent, if there's enough interest than they'll also make a shabbos minyan in a hotel. Tons of attractions around and price-chopper there brings in some kosher basics for the summer

Actually SPG isnt that good at All. Hilton,Marriott and Priority Club (HolidayInn / Interciontinental) have a heck of alot more Hotels ALL Around the World then *W does. And very popular places such as London are really left out in the Cold when it comes to *W. While Marriott and Hiltons are all around London

this is why I maintain Status in more then just 1 program

But when it comes to The Shore it doenst matter as I doubt youd find anything from any Chain outside of AC

At the current rates the W=A Palace Jerusalem will be 50K-80K points per night. (Unless you're elite and will stay for at least 6 nights in which case it will be 30K-58K per night)

which other hotel program (credit card) do you recommend getting?

Only SPG has a compelling credit card offer.
I've crunched the numbers for Hilton, Marriott, Priority Club, etc, it just doesn't add up.

It's true that SPG doesn't have as many hotels as the others, but the reward system is far superior for credit card spending.

Got into a big fight with a couple of old ladies in mantoloking long time ago. One said "We pay a lot of money for our beach, its not for Jews!" ...I was arguing that its mybeach, (in Nj all beaches are public, there is no such thing as a private beach) and that they are antisemitic miserable ugly old hags.

Never heard of anyone getting a fine, nor did I ever hear of that rule.
Though, there are some other rules posted just like by any other beach, (no littering etc.).

Just came back from TK Asian Fusion. Was very pleased with our experience there. We ordered - to start: Eggroll $4, Fried beef wontons $9, sweet potato tempura sushi $8. All of that was delicious, especially the sushi! Main we ordered Mongolian Beef $23 and Chicken Daswan $20. They were both nice sized portions, and very fresh and delicious. Service was quick and friendly. Overall was a great experience. I don't think it was overpriced.

Had a great experience at TK Fusion. When I called for my reservation they asked if I wanted regular seating or Hibatchi. I never heard of a kosher Hibachi restaurant so i figured i would try it out. They have four pits with about 7-10 seats around the grill. I order Steak and my other ordered chicken. It includes grilled vegs, noodles and a soup. After bringing out the soup, the chef arrived. He came with a card that had the raw food as well as some spices. He did a show while cooking the food which was quite interesting and entertaining. I wont go into all the moves and stuff but you can check out youtube if you want more info on Hibachi cooking. For dessert I had choc cake with ice cream. Total bill was $89. Overall had a great experience. I would deff recommend this for a family with kids, as it is quite a show.

I grew up in Deal my whole life and loved crashing Lakewood couples dates in the Ocean Place to make them feel awkward. (if you've been one of my victims gimme a holla!)

That being said, while the Ocean Place is really nice, it is overpriced (upwards of $700/nt) has no points rewards and not close to any shuls. The Ocean Place is also in a part of town called "pier village" which may seem nice while inside the village, but the second you walk out of pier village you are in a very high crime area. all in all I think the ocean place is a bad idea for shabbos. as for walking distance to a minyan - I'd average 30-45 min

The bed & breakfast on cedar avenue called "Cedars & Beeches" is a cute mom & pop b&b that is 10 minute walk from 3 syrian shuls, 1 eshkanaz shul and the beach. Although not as extravagant as the Ocean Place, I would say that is your best bet for a shabbos.

Is Broad St Dough Co kosher?

Yes, it is certified under the JSOR.
JSOR certifies all of the kosher restaurants in deal including Broad Street Dough Co. (yummy yummy donuts like you've never had b4!!!), dougies, 3 pizza stores, Chinese, 656, chocolate soda, both butchers, eat a pita (yum btw!), and asian fusian (also yum!)

also while in deal, you gotta have Rooks coffee... the best coffee you will ever have. my favorite coffee is the Guatemalan.

I grew up in deal so I know the best surfing beaches, best chilling beaches, best fishing, places to rent boats, jetskis, shuls, food, shopping, hotels, ect...

It's hit or miss with the beaches. It all depends on the waves/day of the week. When the waves are nice, stay away from Roosevelt, Darlington and Hathaway. During weekends stay away from Pier Village and the beaches that I mentioned before. Quiet beaches are usually not as nice/accessible (like adams street, or tak beach)

Basically if you want a quiet beach, go in the winter.

As for boating, the guy I usually go to just went out of business :( sorry

A fun place to go in this area is the Jenkinson Boardwalk at Point Pleasant, which has a bunch of fun rides for kids. Tomorrow morning (starting at 11:00) they are offering a 2 for 1 deal on ticket packages (which have no expiration date). $25 buys $50 worth of tickets and $50 buys $100 worth of tickets. Here's the link: http://jenkinsons.com/events/2-for-1-easter-amusement-park-ride-sale/

Attn deal residences Since Pokemon Go allows users to visit real life locations, including schools and houses of worship, there is a security concern. The security concern is that this allows someone conducting surveillance to have a very easy and convenient excuse for why they are at the location.

Pokemon has now added a link to request your location be removed from the game. The site is:
https://support.pokemongo.nianticlabs.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=319928

It takes two minute to fill out the form, and I would encourage you to send this to those on your email list and to complete the form immediately for all synagogues and centers around your area.

2 questions, what does this have to do with deal? it's a problem for all neighborhood. And what does taking your location help? Ppl  "conducting surveillance" still have a reason for being in your shul or around even with your location unavailable

oh yes you are correct about that. But usually even if not completely CY they will have some CY available since there is a big demand for CY in the jersey shore area. Another example is Scoops Ice cream store located in the same shopping center where they are not completely CY but have some CY flavors with special toppings that did not touch non-CY ice cream

not a trip report, just some data points.
stayed in a cheap airbnb for two nights on elmwood avenue. access to beach was great though the beach -seven president oceanfront park- was very crowded. parking was $8 and so was beach admission. there are restrooms and showers, though no chairs or umbrellas to rent.
a word about the beach. the water was murky but i guess i couldnt expect anything better being as it is so close to home. we saw a crab on the beach as well as some fish that the seagulls had left over. we had our 4 month old with us and i dont know how everyone else does it but shlepping the carriage on the sand was a nightmare!
we were there several hours and then went to stinger burger bar which is ten minutes away but they only open at 6 pm so we didnt wait around. the lighthouse italian ices shop on brighton blvd is under jsor certification. not cy but they have several parve flavors which was a heaven send in this 98 degree weather!
next day i went to ocean place to use the beach in back of the hotel so that i can rent a chaise and umbrella but it was way too crowded so i walked up  the promenade. there are several entrances to the beach, some of them private. i ended up at the very end of the promenade where beach access was only $5. this time i got smarter and left the snap n go on the promenade (i have some faith in humanity left) and only took the car seat. was way easier.
after spending several sweltering hours there, i went to the lighthouse location across from the seven presidents park, only to be told by them that they arent under jsor certification. oh well. wasnt going anywhere with the kind of sunburns we suffered from so we just went back to the apt to eat the food we had brought from home.
short, close and doable trip for us.

The beach in Asbury Park has chair and Umbrella rentals (not sure cost since I brought my own). Like most of the jersey shore - you have to pay to get on the beach. It was $5/adult (12 and under free) midweek. Parking is readily available and depending on how far you want to walk can be free or $10/day). Kosher food in Deal on Norwood Ave is about a 5 minute drive away (Jerusalem Pizza will deliver).

Got back from the Jersey Shore last night. Had a really nice time.

Got the the Sheraton Eatontown (4k points/night) about 1:30. It's not a nice hotel by DDF standards but it was fine for the night. We quickly changed and headed to the beach. We went to Asbury Park thinking about renting chairs but we ended up bringing our own. Beach was not that full. We put our chairs in an area away from lifeguards and near the water and barely saw anyone. But it was beautiful. Clear day, slight breeze, good sand. Exactly what a beach day should be. We headed back to the hotel in time to shower, change and daven mincha at Shaare Tefila which is a 5 minute drive from the hotel.
After discussing it with some friends, we actually decided to drive to Lakewood to try out Estreia (which was really good) davened Mariv in Lakewood and headed back to the hotel.

Next morning davened at Shaare Tefila again (still couldn't completely follow all of davening) and then breakfast at Chocolate Soda. Eh. We had the pancakes and the waffles. Both were ok. Didn't have any whipped cream, ice cream, or any sort of cream to put on top. Staff is definitely interesting, a little awkward at times. After breakfast we drove around the area gawking at some of the homes. I mean, the "small" homes were bigger than most of the "large" homes in brooklyn. Pretty awesome.
I tried getting a late checkout but all they would give me was 1pm. So we changed plans slightly. We got ready for the beach and packed up. We went to Hot Sand in Asbury Park, which is a glassblowing store where you can actually participate. It was kinda fun. They limit what you can do to pinching tweezers and blowing into the tube a few times. It was more fun to watch other people go than to do it yourself IMHO.
We headed to the beach again for a few hours. This is where the change of plan came in. Instead of heading back to the hotel, changing, and going for dinner, we decided to just head back home from the beach and eat dinner there.
Before heading home, we stopped for some pizza and URBAN POPS (my family is obsessed with them.) Don't remember the name of the pizza shop but it's down the block and has sushi tokyo inside. Really good brooklyn style pizza. Got home at a decent hour which was nice.

All-in-all, was a great quick getaway. Not sure why it's not more popular with the J-Dubs I know. ;D

Little review on "The Butchers Steakhouse":

I bought the Groupon Dan posted and decided to go last night to check this place out. I had never heard of this place and neither did many of my friends and colleagues. I did a little search on them for reviews. The older reviews said the place is a disaster but the newer ones were full of praise. I called the place up to make reservations and found out that they changed management a few months ago and since then the place rocks!!

First off there is finally a restaurant with nice outdoor seating in the Lakewood area!!! It was such a nice thing to eat under the stars that just for this alone I would come back.

To Start I ordered the Bourbon Chicken which was absolutely delicious!!! I cant compare as I never ordered them before but they were amazing!! We got the Drummetes as well which were great!! Chumus and pita (warmed and toasted) was a hit. But nothing comes close to the mains. I mean those steaks are huge and juicy! We got the Delmonico and the Rib Eye, They were 10/10 by far! Better then any steak you will have in Lakewood or Deal this place truly out does themselves with the food. The Desserts are brought in fresh everyday from Brooklyn and were a great end to the night. You cannot buy wine in the restaurant but they have a separate store which sells wine and they will open it for you and give you the glasses.

Overall its great to get a little out of lakewood for a nice restaurant with great fantastic food. They do have those tiki fires for the winter so you can still enjoy the outdoors.

I've stayed there a couple of times, the hotel itself is pretty nice and the walk to deal is pleasant. It's just a short walk through allenhurst which is a quiet neighborhood.

35 isn't bad. Depends to exact address. I would think 35 would be to the border

But to Brighton might be another 15-20
And
Another 15-20 to park

I doubt anyone.
Try out chocolate soda, probably the only place open for breakfast.

If you like revolve, eat a pita, good eats food truck, or LBK, then you’ll probably like Tapas ;)

Looks like the Staybridge (IHG) re-branded as a Homewood. Shame, as I was looking into using my cc night there, and I don't have Hilton.

That would be crazy, it’s probably just processed through their POS because they take a percentage of revenue (like the food courts in malls)

Don't know about restaurants, but I love that hotel. Very family friendly, and I had only good experiences there.

You welcome for my unsolicited advice.

Thanks. Yeah, it's us and our 3 yr old. Debating whether to spring for the 2br so we don't have to worry about waking her in the common area. It's an extra $70 per night. Hoping to get a cheaper upgrade at check in (no status with Hilton, unfortunately).

I had no issue with the one-bedroom suite. (Just make sure not to take the "studio suite", which is basically one big room).

The one-bedroom suite is two parts, separated by doors. The beds are on in the room, and there is a couch and kitchenette outside. You can decide where to put your kid, and use the other room as your base.

Yeah, took the 1BR. If I can ask - where's the bathroom off of - bedroom or living room?

Sounds good.

Btw, note that the pool is outdoors, not indoors. Just in case it makes a difference to you. Also, it's on the same lot as the Sheraton Eatontown, in case you are having trouble finding it.

More things outdoors is better for us. Our biggest concern with going to a hotel are public spaces.

Is there a way I can download all of Rav Mansour's Daf Yomi shiurim on masechet  Eruvin at one time instead of downloading each day separately?

First time visiting (want to) Jersey Shore.
What beach hotel is the least "exposed" to non-tznius that would work as simply staying in a higher up room for example. More points for it being more private.
Need some sun and ocean :) out my window.

Thank you!

If only it was $600, right now it looks like 900. Lets redefine 'nice', is there anything much less than that.

Ocean place is cheaper (300-500).

I also assume you can find a spa in AC (looks like Caesar's palace has).

I didnt have a price in mind, thats why i didnt ask it like that, it would depend on whats included, up to $300 a night.

Although it seems like i might have to adjust my price range.
I was really just looking for some ideas with people that had experience and to then check for myself if it was viable.

Thoughts on which beach to go to for a weekday? Extra points if you can rent umbrellas/tent and close to restaurants (cheap or midrange for lunch). So far I’m leaning towards Loch Arbour and going to Down to Earth. Obviously Long Branch has LBK but I was guided away from that beach due to it being very crowded.
