Title: NYC Hotels Master Thread
Post by: meshugener on December 18, 2012, 08:55:09 AM
Looking for a top-noch nightout anywhere in NYC, using Hilton points.
Any ideas?

Waldorf Astoriia Tower maybe? That costs a ton of points.
Without using too many pts, maybe the best is Doubletree Times Square. The Conrad is new and supposedly nice but it's not in a typical touristy neighborhood.

I got the Conrad for two nights next week at $129 per night for a Deluxe King Suite using Hilton's friends and family sale (1/2 off through January 7th 2013). The Millennium Hilton was also available for $114 per night. The Waldorf was available for a few nights at about $150, but I don't think you will find anymore rooms at the W=A at that rate. You can access the sale here: http://hhonors3.hilton.com/en/offers/100040020.htm?WT.mc_id=zCBWAJM0US1HN2REP4ThankYouSale5Thankyou7GW841255

The Conrad is actually owned by Goldman Sachs who's New York office is adjacent to the hotel. When the financial crisis hit, they started forcing employees visiting the NY office to stay there (rather than at the nearby Ritz Carlton or more luxurious digs in midtown). At the time, it was an Embassy Suites. Rumor has it, that the property was revamped and upgraded to a Conrad to assuage the feelings of the bankers who couldn't handle mingling with commoners at the complimentary happy hour over plastic cups of bud-light and chex-mix, or the thought of "only" getting an Embassy Suites. All the rooms there are suites.

This is true, but I felt it was worth bringing to the OP's attention that there are some very good rates to be had at some of Hilton's more premium locations in the city that would justify foregoing an award redemption on a single night.

+1, definitely not worth blowing 50k if you can spend $114.

.0022 cpp = NG.

many people accumulate hotel and airline points not to get the best CPM/CPP but because they would otherwise just not go rather than spend the money.
I don't understand why most of the bloggers/ points people don't get that.

But in this case its worth it for him to save his points and use it elsewhere where he cant get such a good deal if paying cash

Yes, using your assumptions in which he is planning multiple trips and planning on paying for at least one of them, I guess you would be right. Are you being serious?

Umm..I could be wrong but I dont think this is his last hotel stay he ever plans on having.  If he could spend his miles elsewhere where they would be worth more it could be he would.

Right. I would never consider a nightout in a luxurious hotel - just for the heck of it - had I have to pay for it.
Just trying to get the most out of it, such as whirlpool, fun, fancy, luxurious, etc....
Thanks all for suggestions.

Because you can sell/barter the points at the higher value.

I stayed at the W downtown recently. Can't speak for the suites but compared with the Andaz 5th ave, (where I did get a suite) its - well there's no comparison. The Andaz has a very sophisticated and sleek feel. All amenities are free, except alcoholic beverages. Wifi is free too, which means you are getting premium benefits even without being a plat/diamond member.

At the W a bag of chips will cost a fortune. Uptown is also much more elegant and clean, while the W overlooks the WTC which is fantastic, if you get a room on that side. It's a construction zone and the streets are dirtier.

Our suite at the andaz came with a dishwasher! It was spacious (btw it was a free upgrade) light and roomy. The room at the W was very tight.

The one advantage of the W was the amazing Bliss spa soaps. If you end up there get as many as you can. I just ordered a full size facewash after trying it out there and it cost $30 on sale!

I had a similar experiance on the SPG site yesterday. The rates in Venice at the westin were 160 euro and when I went to the special limited promotions which were soon expiring the rate went to 186 euro.  :o

Stayed recently at Conrad NY (in Battery Park) using one of my free Hilton Reserve weekend nights. Nice property, great amenities, and much larger rooms than your typical NYC hotel. Ate uptown and it was a quick shot down FDR to hotel. Plus I can imagine the location would be nice in the spring/summer/fall as it is across from the water.

I posted this last month.
I'm once again entertaining the idea of staying at the Aloft or Sheraton either the one by LGA airport or Duffield.
What can someone recommend (i've staid at Sheraton LGA before)

Also, I can book out of my personal Gold account or someone else's platinum. Will I have a prob with a suite upgrade if I am the second guest if booked from Plat? I know some hotels are strict (Like Westin Diplomat Hollywood).... Which hotel of the 3 will I have a better chance of getting a nice upgrade?
I'll be using points

+1. We stayed there and the AC wasn't working in the room. My wife didn't sleep a wink and they absolutely refused to make amends. The hotel itself was lousy otherwise. The room was strange and the elevators were draped as if they were doing construction, which they weren't at the time.

How is the room is it nice? Worth staying for a night out with the wife? Or better save it for something nicer?

Has anyone stayed at the W Union Square?  My wife and I are thinking about spending a day and a night in the Village/Chelsea area and we have like 120k SPG points.  I also have about 88k HHonors points if there's anything downtown worth looking at.

So we ended up spending the night at the W New York in Union Square.  It's a nice hotel and the location was excellent for us.  They only let you book the smallest room type on the website so of course I called SPG and asked if it was possible to upgrade to something larger.  They put us in the next size up room on the 8th floor with a pretty good view of Union Square, for an additional 1500 Starpoints.  I felt it was totally worth it.  My biggest complaint is instead of a minibar inside a cabinet (like I'm used to), they have a whole bunch of goodies out on the counter, as well as underneath it and luckily I found the price list buried in the middle of it all, because one small bag of popchips goes for $7 over there.  We bought a bag twice the size down the street for $2.19.  When I stayed at the St Regis (last year) we got two free water bottles and a bowl of fresh fruit in the room, also free.  So until I noticed the well-hidden price list I thought the chips and granola might have been a perk.  They have an Acura that you can reserve to get a free ride within a reasonable distance, but it was booked basically the whole time we were there.  They also have free granny smith apples in the lobby :)

I stayed at the Andaz 5th Ave this week and booked an Andaz King room for 22k. I have Diamond status (challenge) with Hyatt, so when i got to the hotel i told him it was our anniversary and if he could help us out. He had to go ask, but after a couple of minutes he gave us an upgrade to a Terrace Suite (really nice). Also, we called the front desk from our room and asked if we could get a kosher breakfast? They promptly sent up a menu from Milk & Honey. (We were told that we had $75 to spend there, but we spent alot more than that and werent charged anything.)

Hey I'm going to NY for 1 night  labor day weekend and thinking about a hotel option ...

don't want to spend a ton ,, since this isnt really a vaca and i will only be there for less then 24 hours .. (not sure if I even can get breakast as I need to check out at like 8:30 am)

Theres no SPG that I would want  to stay (don't want to spend the points on W time square - been there and over priced) another option is Sheraton for 12k.

so it seems like looking through this thread Andaz 5th is a favorite... for 22k a night.  I have no status with Hyatt.. . any other suggestions on what I should consider doing... should I Upgrade ? should i do a trial status ?  I assume I can't order breakfast so early the day i check out so not sure if there is any other reason .. well i guess milk and honey is open at 7am so I could get breakfast

very nice hotel and good service. Ive been there a couple times and have gotten upgraded some of them. But try to get facing NYC and its really a nice view at night without the noise! As well weather permitting they have bikes they lend out which makes for a good activity. Or you can leave your car there and they will drive you to the ferry and spend the day in NY (cab or train around) without the hassle of parking.

many people accumulate hotel and airline points not to get the best CPM/CPP but because they would otherwise just not go rather than spend the money.
I don't understand why most of the bloggers/ points people don't get that.

True but you could probably sell the points and pay for the hotel room and have some cash leftover. Example, 25K starpoints can get you about $375 (as of 12/10/13 from sellmilesnow.com) so if you can get  a room for less than $300 it's worthwhile to sell points then pay for the room.

This is a review of the Hyatt Regency Jersey City.

We booked a free night with an anniversary award.

I would not normally write a review of a hotel room except the only point of something this extravagant is the cool factor. We barely spent any time in it so I figured I'll share it with you guys.

This was meant to be a really short purely business trip at a hotel close to NY.

We checked in late and I found out they were sold out, so they upgraded us to the Empire Suite.

I can't even find this suite on their website. I guess if you are booking online you cannot afford it. It's is probably meant for royalty or high profile politicians or obnoxious athletes.

The double doors with doorbell should have  been a clue:

Inside the door. You can see the scale of the room from the emergency escape plan:

The Andaz 5th Ave is a great hotel which also happens to meet all of your needs.

1)Chabad Lubavitch of Midtown Manhattan Center is one block away.

2) Le Marais is approx. a 10 min away (5 small blocks, and 2 large blocks)
150 W 46th St, New York, NY 10036
(212) 869-0900
Directions from Andaz to Le Marais (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Andaz+5th+Avenue,+485+5th+Ave,+New+York,+NY+10017/Le+Marais,+150+W+46th+St,+New+York,+NY+10036/@40.7546978,-73.9850507,16z/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c259005e3ce6f3:0x150a268ca8f541b0!2m2!1d-73.98095!2d40.752839!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c258559970e091:0x832e9f5017a0d478!2m2!1d-73.98426!2d40.75814)

I'm looking for a hotel room at a Starwood property in NYC. Check in date is August 7, for one night.

I found for 12,000 points the Four Points Midtown, Element New York Times Square West, Sheraton NY Times Square, and Westin NY Grand Central. Any input on which is the best? I'd pay 20,000 if there was a hotel that's considerably better, and if a particular hotel is more likely to upgrade us because it's our first anniversary, that is worth something to.

Booked the W Times Square for 20k SPG. Anyone stayed there?

It's annoying it won't let you search "W Times Square" because you can't have a 1 letter word...

So I just had a wonderful night in the Andaz 5th ave. stayed in an XL loft room, pretty sure it was a standard and not a suite. Only time I have ever stayed in a hotel in midtown so can't really compare it to other hotels in the area, however we had a great time and my wife loved modern and sleek the rooms were. I have stayed at the Conrad before this and that was also great though not in the same location at all. WARNING, maybe I am just a rookie but I usually valet park at the hotels and in the past various cities it costs about 35 dollars ( usually more then I spend to get the hotel room!) but here it was a whopping 67 dollars! I tried I get icon parking but couldn't get a hold of one on such short notice. But I would advise everyone as it can save a boat load of money.

Tiny rooms but really nice. And the bathroom, my goodness. How I long for that rain shower (I put one in in my house, but it doesn't compare to the 10K system (yes system, not showerhead) they had). And the toiletries were amazing.

I stayed in the W Times Square last week for our anniversary. For 20k spg maybe wasn't the best redemption, but at least now my wife can't say that I always talk about the trips we are "going" to take and we never actually go anywhere haha.

The hotel was really nice. They sent a bottle of champagne up to the room while we were out. It wasn't kosher, and they didn't have a kosher alternative when I asked, but it was still nice. We got a standard room on the 48th floor. It's in a great location and we had a great time, but next time I think I'm going to go for the Andaz.

the advantage of  the city is , that if you are out and about late at night it is easier and quicker to get back to a hotel in the city vs. having to go back to Hoboken...(especially if you are using mass trans.)

Update: stayed at Fairfield Inn by Marriott for $169 incl tax booked through hotels.com. They have a deal with the Icon lot around the corner for $30 for the night. Room was small but it definitely did the job and included breakfast was nice. It's nice that breakfast in America has many more Kosher options than the breakfasts we encountered throughout Europe. Hotel was 10 min from the Garment Center Congregation for Shacharis.
Came out perfectly just under the $200 my insurance company allotted me for a hotel for the night.

Not going to lie, just checked in and I'm a little disappointed. I asked about an upgrade as a plat member and was fed the line that they are all booked for the night. I booked my room this morning and saw plenty of other available. I don't mind not getting an upgrade but I do mind being lied to. Additionally the room I got has a view of what looks like vents above ac units. The room itself is pretty nice and I will post pictures later.

I booked my room this morning and saw plenty of other available. I don't mind not getting an upgrade but I do mind being lied to. Additionally the room I got has a view of what looks like vents above ac units. The room itself is pretty nice and I will post pictures later.
Is it just the lie about no available rooms for upgrade that's disappointing or is the hard product also disappointing? Is it worth saving my sign up bonus for?

Is the Andaz Wall St that much worse than the 5th Ave Andaz? Everyone here talks about 5th, but there is barely a mention of the Wall St location.

the views are not the attraction there, unless you own one of the units that are all situated above the hotel floors.

the hotel itself is very nice. But since they basically refuse to upgrade you are stuck with the standard room which is nice but I didn't think it was that amazing. (http://i59.tinypic.com/qrycys.jpg) I'll upload a few more pics when I get home

I am not such a huge fan of andaz. I personally feel that 48 lex is comparable with bigger room size.
Ive stayed 3 tomes at andaz 5th and never been upgraded and im a diamond.

I've stayed at both the Andaz 5 and the Lex 48 and found the rooms at the Andaz to be much larger.

Surprised you've never been upgraded as a DIA at Andaz 5...

I stayed in the park hyatt nyc last week

I got a  bigger room than the standard room overlooking Carnegie hall (i am only a platinum member)
They brought me up to the room right away and never asked for id (for people staying on someone's free night)
They gave me a bottle of champagne cause it was my anniversary, I called the front desk and told them I eat kosher, they apologized and said they'll bring me a kosher bottle of wine
Check out the shower by the pool/gym
They have a complimentary chauffeur service within a 10 block radius which starts after 8:00am, they drove me in a Mercedes almost 20 blocks (was I supposed to tip the driver?)
I'll try to load pictures later

Just stayed two nights at the PH NYC, great hotel and good location and I used Uber to go all around town, booked on points and was upgraded to a premium room for being platinum.

The minute you come already downstairs they ask for your name and the door man radios up to the third floor that you are coming they have the room keys waiting for you.

I need a night this week in NYC. Should I stay at the Park Hyatt?

Or the Andez is about a 10 minute drive closer to where I need to be. Should I just stay there?

Basically worth sacrificing 10-15 minute drive to stay at the Park Hyatt?

Looks like another good option but I just realized both places have parking costs. $20 and $35. Add tolls to that and all of a sudden neither option seems so good to get a swim in.

You can park at a lot 2 blocks away for $9.

Don't bother with tolls. You are literally on top of the Path station which gets you right into the city for 2 bucks and change.

Hyatt Jersey city is super easy to get to via public transportation from Manhattan. Prob even quicker than driving

So now we're paying $2.75 pp each way on the subway (subways are going up to $2.75 in a few days) and then $2+change each way on the Path = ~$20 cheaper, but not by much. Perhaps it's still a better idea though.

PHNY does not have standard rooms left for points nor P&C, so best they could do was $400 and 30k HGP for a Park Suite or $600 and 30k HGP for west side Suite (supposedly better) or Junior Suite for $875 and 6k. I chose the first. We will be in NYC 5/6-5/7 evening for less than 2 full days and staying at PHNY for one night only; before our JFK-MXP flight. Should I just look elsewhere or is it worth keeping? Thoughts on alts? I'm a Plat btw.

Wow!  The worst experience ever at any Hyatt property.  It seems like everyone was a newbie here at PHNYC.  The only good thing that I could say is that one of the managers gave us a 2 single bed room for $150 as we had arrived at 2:30am yesterday morning for our 5/6-7 stay.  Thank goodness he did that because even if we asked for early check-in for our actual king bed room, we did not get checked in until after 4pm.  After 4pm!!!  I could understand that they were somehow overbooked this week, so I was not expecting early check-in.  But, being checked in way past the standard 3pm check-in time is ridiculous.  That's not all!  When we got our room change, they double booked the room, so someone else was in there when we were being moved.  So, we had to move to another room which was a lower level room.  All they could say was, "I'm so sorry..."  We wasted most of our day waiting for our room yesterday.  Although, they did give us chocolates and a bottle of sparkling wine, and we could leave anytime today, I feel that the whole experience and inconvenience factor deserves more compensation.  I don't understand how this is a 5 star hotel.  I am not impressed especially as it is a new hotel.  The manager has not even reached out to me.  In fact, I had to reach out to them every so often to find out about our room change status.  Even at a P&C rate, I feel like I overspent.  What is a fair compensation to ask for for this experience?  Should I even do so?  I'm Plat, if that makes a difference, and I'm staying at many Hyatts for the next two weeks.

So the "worst experience ever"  boils down to (i) a 4pm check in as opposed to a 3pm check in,  so 60 mins late, and (ii) and you had to move to a lower level because the room they thought was available wasn't?

Can someone recommend a 5 star hotel check in tonight through Wed. 5/17-5/20 should be in a nice area and near Shul. I would spend in the $400 range or any type of points.

Thanks

For points (as opposed to free nights), the PH is $350 more than Andaz but only 5000 extra points.
Is it the obvious choice?
Any chance Platinum status will get an upgrade at either?

Always a chance, but depends on capacity and more likely the check-in agents mood.

At the end we stayed at Park Hyatt. Told them on reservation form that it was for my 30th b-day (it was) and mentioned platinum status. They upgraded us to deluxe room and left chocolate cake, champagne, and happy birthday note (debated whether to tell them about Kosher, but decided against it). I loved the room, rain shower, size, etc. but would consider trying the Andaz next time d/t better location. We had trains nearby but Times Square was a walk.

If anyone is interested in mini trip report: We went Wed afternoon to rent bikes in Central Park ($12 for 2 bikes via Groupon). Nice store, nice ride. Then we went to room to shower and change for dinner. Went to Mr. Broadway (which has been redone in the last few years) because it was best restaurant for us at which we were able to use our GKR SBS certs (I had the BBQ boneless wings and BBQ brisket and loved them both; wife had some hamburger which was fine).
Next day we went to get breakfast/lunch at Milk n Honey, then went to Circle Line boat ride. We enjoyed the boat, but I would recommend getting there real early bc good seats go fast.
Spent some loose time in the middle around TimeSquare, Dave & Busters, etc.
We're from NYC but never had experience of seeing city like "tourists." Nice vacation for wife who doesn't like to travel far from children.

Stayed at the Park Hyatt last night, using a free night certificate. Was just an amazing experience. Besides for the terrible views ( which can be expected in the city ) the hotel is amazing. Their service is exceptional, and rooms are upscale, and modern. Awesome bathroom with soaking tub, rain-handle shower combination. They also have a nice indoor pool, jacuzzi, and sauna. I would definitely recommend for couple's who just need a one night break, from the business of life.

What is OTA? Haven't find this abbreviation in acronym thread ;(
I have checked Pricelibe express deals but figured may be someone knows some specials or better ways to book inexpensive but decent hotel in NYC. I'm familiar with c/c anniversary/sign up bonuses that can be bought for under $150 but those are usually good for 1-2 nights stay as combining multiple certificates under different names might be challenging :(

Plenty of places in Manhattan have free street parking at night. Lower East Side for one, is close to Brooklyn. But you could even park in some areas of Midtown overnight.
Check out BestParkingNYC.com for which streets you can park on.

I have no idea what the stair situation is like, but the rooms would be tricky due to the sensors and light situation.
Also many plug outlets are deactivated when you turn the lights off, including where they plugged the fridge into.

Not sure if here is the right place to post, but I figure ppl here need to know about DSUs more than in the NYC hotel master thread. I just got back from a stay in the splash suite at the Andaz 5th Ave. It. Was. Awesome! Staff there is so nice and super accommodating, the amenities are awesome, and couldn't ask for a better location! For all those who like to daven with a minyan, the chabad of midtown is two blocks away, and its close to all major shopping and restaurants. The only thing I would advise ppl about is about the breakfast. Don't get me wrong, it was an unbelievably awesome perk, I am not complaining at all but there were some unexpected outcomes that I feel others would like to know about. We ordered two coffees assuming they were coming from milk and honey along with the rest of the food (as they were listed on the M&H take out menu), but instead they came from the hotel shop. To many people here this may not present an issue, but for someone who keeps cholov yisrael, this was slightly upseting. Additionaly, the bagels on the menu are listed on the menu without any option of adding spreads. I ordered 3 bagels with cream cheese and figured the worst that could happen is they would say that they don't do that. Wrong. The order showed up with 3 (!) Half pint containers of cream cheese. As a result, I was a little nervous that I would be charged extra for this at checkout, but as others have reported, it seems that it is possible to go over the $75 limit and not get charged. Again, not complaining, just trying to give a heads up to anyone who might wanna know.

A big thanks to the ppl in this thread who helped me out (@ CS91 especially), you guys are the best!

We need to drop our daughter on Long Island for a simcha (bat mitzvah) in April.  DW and I would normally then spend Shabbos in Manhattan, say midtown or UWS, daven Carlebach, dine Talia's, daven LSS in AM.

Now I see that there are PointsBreaks at Holiday Inn Staten Island and at HIE Roslyn.  Is anyone familiar with the shuls that are walkable to either of these properties?

On Staten Island, it seems Aur Torah (sephardic) and YI SI are both about an hour walk from the HI.

In Roslyn, it seems that the  Roslyn Synagogue is within 2 miles of HIE.

I fully appreciate that Shabbos at either of these locations won't be as luxurious as in UWS but for 5K points /night it could be very economical.  I would appreciate thoughts and suggestions.

Hubs and I were both approved for the Hyatt. We've never been to NY, so we're planning on a road trip. We'll have four nights and it looks like Park Hyatt is the place to stay. I heard the traffic was bad. We thought maybe we could drive there and then use public transport. Is that doable? I hate paying the $25 parking fee but it's still a cheap night although we'll need to rent a car to get there as ours are getting up in age.

Based on what I read it doesn't sound like Hyatt matches status and breakfast isn't included with Plat. I have Hiton Diamond, lounge access with SPG business, gold with CC, and whatever you get with Marriott CC. We can be flexible in our dates. I'm thinking they may be less busy during the week. We're looking at the end of June or after the July 4th.

Just looking for opinions and thoughts.

In relation to what? Money, points, redemption value?

I've spent that amount at a few SLS and St Regis. I enjoyed them all.

The St Regis in Manhattan is a definite upgrade from the 20k Le Meridean or a 12k W. Plus it has many suites so status does help. Much bigger than the Chatwal, though personilized service isn't the same.

I stayed at the W on Lexington and would not recommend. I stayed in a studio suite. The rooms had an old feel to them, the decor was low-end and cheapy. The bathroom was tiny and bare. It almost felt like a dormitory. The only plus side was that it was very clean and I am usually very picky with the cleanliness in hotels.

The lobby is nice and there is a nice lounge there as well.

Need a place to stay for 2 adults and 5 smaller kids in the NYC area. Been looking for 2 Bedroom suite hotels, but have not found too many. Trying to keep it under $250. Willing to drive to NJ (or within 30 min). I'll take 2 inexpensive connecting rooms, if I can guarantee they will connect.

Any suggestions? So far I've found the Homewood suites East Rutherford.
Thanks

Anyone have any experience arranging for kosher dinner served at the Park Hyatt NYC? I know they can arrange for kosher breakfast if you order through the hotel, but want to know about bringing in my own food and having them serve.

Separately - aside from Prime Grill and chabad of midtown, anyone know of any pre-paid friday night meals in Midtown? Also - what are closest shabbos minyan options (ideally with a kiddush) near the PH?

what about the sensors on the toilet in the master bathroom in the suites? Wasn't expecting that one.

i was comparing it to the ritz but I can compare it to the andaz is well. Only reason to go to andaz is for the splash suite. But andaz is more of a boutique hotel IMO if you want the real hotel feel you go to PH. As far as location for a tourist PH is much better and is also near upscale food. For work you would want to be in andaz as it is closer to lunch places and businesses.

I hope that clears it up.

We are at the Waldorf Astoria NYC (thank you JetBlue Vacations + JetBlue CC). As noted elsewhere, if you make the reservation via a third party, WA and HH won't let you add the HH # to the record in advance. So, I had low expectations of getting any Diamond benefits.

However, on checkin, the agent was very nice, entered my HH number, told me to help myself to two waters from the minibar, and gave me two drink coupons. She also said I could avail myself of the diamond reception. It merits a longer posting, but for now suffice it to say that the concierge there game me two more drink coupons for being a diamond member.

Which brings me to my offer:
DW and I used two of the coupons (one Maker's Mark, one Elijah Craig) and I have two left to give away. They expire 3/1 (really 2/28). I am leaving for cancun Friday, so please PM me your name, address, and I will bli neder mail them to the first respondent.  Enjoy! See photo of the passes. Books into base room which is not a suite (although their standard room is massive compared to other NYC hotels) with one king bed. Sometimes they offer the ADA rooms that are slightly bigger and have two queen beds.

pluses for ritz bp are great water views, less traffic (if u dont drive during rush hours) and can go to Reserve Cut or the newly opened Milk N Honey (160 broadway) for lunch, RC for dinner, and Lox across the street for late breakfast (all decent walking distance). if u want to slum, can also get bravo pizza or burger, or order in some quality cafe11 sushi on their lunch special (2 rolls for 10 3 rolls for 15, their spcy salmon avocado rolls are my fave)...

Thinking of spending a Shabbat in the andaz Wall Street to try it out.

Is it doable? Is there a shul nearby? We would bring food so that's not an issue.

Please don't say Chatwal found that place to be a major 👎🏻  Walls were paper thin and we had a crazy neighbor, room was tiny and hubby kept calling the place a name😷.  No second chances.
The rooms are small but the quality of materials and design aesthetic is superb. Bathroom has a $5k toilet (numi kohler) with a rain drop shower.

And the staff wasn't cheap at all. Gave us 4 $30 vouchers when the room wasn't ready and sent up kosher chocolates and two bottles of kosher wine with a handwritten note from the manager and general manager apologizing and wishing us a pleasant stay. Got the room with an outdoor patio which was lovely.

Mini TR stayed here with a DSU for a shabbat
You can walk up and down the steps no issues, the front doors are no issues.

Only issue is the key to the room but that is an issue everywhere.

Fridge in the room is tiny and they will not provide another one. so for Friday night I booked a second room just to have more fridge space but they do not offer connecting rooms only side by side with a hallway door that close. So no good for young kids but ok for older ones.

Walked to the wall street synagogue (HT yehuda) but they only had 6 guys so I ended up praying in the room as the shul seemed a bit creepy to me

Sat night got delivery from reserve cut as it was the closest option. Not a good idea you really should only eat in at these steakhouses but that wasnt an option for me as I had the kids with me and wasnt interested in dragging them to a 5 star restaurant.

I asked them for utensils and they said do you want plastic or do you want to buy metal ones? lol I chose plastic but regretted it as it was hard to eat the steak that I split with my wfe. We got the burger as well, which also wasnt great. I am assuming that if we ate in it would be much better as it always is.

Oh and no kosher diamond breakfast

feel free to ask any questions

safra synagogue is near Central Park and there is an ashkennazi shul a block away but I forgot the name.

It's easy to get around the city with the subway so being 10-15 minutes to a minyan shouldn't be an issue as there are minyanim all over

Never been to the plaza but been to the PH a couple of times.

I would say if your looking for more of a modern type of place PH would be your choice but if more Royal/Classic is your thing than maybe give plaza a go.

Has anybody ever stayed in Hotel Giraffe in NYC?

I'm looking to go for a 1 night / 2 day stay in Manhattan next week. I'm looking for something nice but not super pricey (200 - 350 range). I prefer to book with CSR points or SPG/Marriott points.

When I search using Chase UR Travel, this 'Hotel Giraffe' keeps showing on the top because it's rated #4 of hotels in NYC on Trip Advisor. Does anyone know if Trip Advisor is a good source of info? When I searched for the highly recommended over here 'Andaz 5th Ave' it doesn't show up on the Chase site.

Any recommendations? How does Giraffe compare with 'Michelangelo' 'Pearl Hotel'  'Yotel' or 'Shery Netherlands' which all seem to be in my range?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Anyone know of hotels in the city that have some type of corner that a crib can be somewhat to the side? Obviously hoping for a suite upgrade but if that doesn't work out, I need a room that has some type of corner or nook that I can put a crib in. Baby doesn't sleep well with people around and I want to enjoy my trip.

Hyatt, SPG, Hilton, Marriott, Hilton, or IHG are all ok.

For the price range, you could probably buy a Hyatt Sign Up Night assuming a standard room is available at the Park Hyatt New York. That would be a lot nicer than any of the hotels in your list.

My question in this thread:
I may take my son to US Open tomorrow to see Fed play tomorrow night. We would have very short overnight and then return Wednesday morning via LGA.

I believe that @mochjas and @12HRS spoke positively about the Hyatt Place there, so we'll probably do that.
But the other option is the Holiday Inn, where I could use up a Chase/IHG free night certificate.

Question is, is  the HI okay for an overnight? (i.e., not, as my daughters would say, scuzzy?)

Thanks.

It's a moot point now anyway, as my son is there by himself with friends.  ;D

Welcome Ray! Things can sometimes get a bit heated in online forums, and perhaps yes, this should be more of an advertisement, but once you're here, I'd love to share some thoughts!

Nice location, rooms look a bit dated, would be nice to have a few aspirational suites. Free snacks and wine & cheese is very nice. What you'll find in these forums is that most people only eat Kosher. Would you consider bringing in some Kosher options for your breakfast and snacks? You mention that you have the lowest rates - what is your best rate guarantee? If one finds a cheaper rate elsewhere, what do you offer them? Wish you offered a points system, perhaps one day!

Did PH last year for Thanksgiving and had a great time. Really just choose any of the big names (preferably near some of the intended activities restaurants so you're not always taking a subway/cab) and you'll likely have a nice time. NY is great that time of year.

really great location, waking up to a gorgeous view of central park laid out in front of u is pretty special. indoor upstairs pool is a nice plus though kinda small and was rarely empty when i stayed years ago. if u can swing an upgrade with a view and its a nice clear morning, just looking out sipping your coffee is worth it.

SUN would be a better deal vs 30k. (WhatsApp me if you need one  ;D) also maybe look at taking advantage of this promo (https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/wyndham-rewards/hotel-deals/free-hotel-night?ICID=IN%3AWR%3A20180205%3AHPEH1%3AFREEHOTELNIGHT%3ANULL%3AEN-US) once you are paying cash for one night

That area by Beekman Street is a business office district with nothing Shabbosdig. I think youíll be bored. Best area for Shabbos in Manhattan would be the upper West Side, from the 60ís up to the 90ís, a residential neighborhood near many Shuls. You can also walk to Central or Riverside Park.

Not sure if this is still relevant but DEFINITELY the Andaz. I loved the Andaz and with the location, thought it to be very close to the PH in quality. Marriott Marquis was fun because of location, lobby, elevators, etc, but the actual hotel was fine at best.

I davened weekday Minchas at the Tribeca Synagogue on White Street and also the Wall Street Synagogue at 48 Beekman Street, apparently near your Hotel, but was never in that area on Shabbos. I always thought the latter was closed on weekends, as all the other weekday financial district Mincha minyanim, but I just googled the WSS and they show Shabbos services. Also, if youíre up for more of a walk there are Shuls on the Lower East Side, but again Iím not familiar with any details.

Planning a July Shabbat in NYC.
Four of us -- me, DW, two teens.
Would like to do PH.
Reservation allows three people, not four, and only shows king bed.

1. What's the chance they'll "upgrade"/swap us to a room with two beds?
2. Or, would they allow two rollaways (could cite religious reasons?)?
3. Would it be too conspicuous to bring a cot? https://www.dansdeals.com/miscellaneous/walmart-coleman-30-x-80-comfortsmart-deluxe-cot-for-6-11-after-37-34-walmart-in-store-pickup-discount/

Dan agrees.
One agent at check in, barely any lobby space, service very unpolished I wasnít even offered a bellboy
I would call it a nice 4* definitely not 5
1 thing that did impress me was that the room was huge, I did some sort of upgrade though so not sure what you will get

welcome to NYC. You did not go to Asia or Australia. For the price of a sign up night or using only 30k UR you will night find a better value in NYC. The location is amazing as well. Even their standard rooms are big for NYC. So if you didn't get a bellboy or had to wait at check in I would take that considering all the other good about this hotel.

It's not amazing but it's the best value for NYC by far.

I got them to do it at check in since they wanted $75 for a rollaway but it could be because it was available or because I am a globalist and used a DSU. I was in the Junior suite double room. The beds were smallish (we each slept with a 3 or 5 year old and it was tight so it would be worse with teens)but there is a separate living area and lots of closet and storage space. The bathroom is huge as well.

so you would rather spend $250 (average price of all the hotels that you listed one of them being a doubletree including tax) then pay $275 to buy a sign up night or use 30k UR which are super easy to get to stay in a room that is much nicer, double the size, and in a hotel that you agreed is nicer and has a pool.

That makes a lot of sense.

Without knowing what status you have with hyatt & your chances of an upgrade if you do end up in a basic room, they are pretty small. They may be considered big for nyc as @mochjas said but thatís not saying much.

I used a SUN there & I had discoverist, the room I got would not fit 2 adults & 2 teens, unless youíre down for a real cozy sleepover type of experience. Maybe you could put one cot in the room & the other in the bathroom or the entrance way but itís the type youíll be stepping over cots to get around the room, I think you get the picture. Try your luck maybe youíll be able to get them to confirm an upgrade for you.

Yes of course. Sry if I came accross as entitled. For a 5 star hotel that charges $1200 a night after tax, that prides itself on service(st Regis), and I happen to be the highest level of platinum, if I get free hotel breakfast that isn't kosher, IMHO they should offer at least $20 per person of food from a Kosher restaurant.

what were you expecting the status to give you that it didn't give you? They gave you free breakfast, they gave you an upgrade, they are only supposed to give you the base suite it is not common to get free premium suites. Did they not give you late checkout? Consider switching to Hyatt if free kosher breakfast is important to you. They will give you free parking on awards and not charge you any resort or destination fees. Also you can confirm upgrades in advance with DSUs

what were you expecting the status to give you that it didn't give you? They gave you free breakfast, they gave you an upgrade, they are only supposed to give you the base suite it is not common to get free premium suites. Did they not give you late checkout? Consider switching to Hyatt if free kosher breakfast is important to you. They will give you free parking on awards and not charge you any resort or destination fees. Also you can confirm upgrades in advance with DSUs
so basically, no reason for top tier platinum. gold also gets you upgrade
very disappointed that they didn't upgrade a one night stay for an ambassador platinum to a premium suite

platinum gets you a suite upgrade to a standard suite if available. Gold does not get you that. Platinum also gets you free breakfast and 4 Pm late checkout. Gold does not get breakfast and only gets 2 Pm late checkout.

To say there is no benefit of being top tier platinum could be true but I'm sure it has its benefits just in this 1 case it didn't.

In general there are benefits to being top tier platinum. I'm not going to list them but you can google it to find out what they are. But officially at S. Regis you don't get better upgrades for being a higher level of platinum though you might have priority if only one room is available

I have 0 experience, but there is a Conrad in the area. Doesn't seem as on par of other Conrads perhaps, but still might be nice.

St Regis or Ritz Central Park?
From my understanding, better odds of upgrade at SR.

Has anyone had the kosher breakfast at the Park Hyatt NYC?

(Obviously) its free for Globalists but they told me over the phone it has an MSRP of $50. Between the Globalist perks of free breakfast and the free parking (for 25 hours which is really useful) it seems like a really wise use of 30k UR points.

At the SR right now, I'm plat ambassador btw, my ambassador wasn't a help trying to get kosher breakfast. Concierge offered to order it but the hotel wouldn't pay for it. I got an upgrade to a "grand luxe room" not a suite. Butler service took about 15 min. The room is decent and the turndown service is cool, but next time I'll just stick with the PH, especially with this $50 destination fee mishagas

Can you use the $50 destination fee credit for kosher breakfast?
How did you spend your food and beverage credit?

Yes. Really nice rooms, and awesome to have a pool in the city. That alone is worth 30k. The free Kosher breakfast is a big plus, although they forgot to order it for me, so it didn't show up until after 10AM.

Besides the PH, Did anyone have success getting a NYC hotel to order AND PAYfor kosher breakfast?

P.S. I'm getting sick of the response "Our concierge will gladly assist you in ordering or making a reservation..."

If I am willing to pay for breakfast, where do they order it from? Any good suggestions?

Central Park South is a very prestigious street so the hotels there command more than their real worth. Edition is definitely a league below though.

considering a night can easily go for $1,000+ it is extremely great value
the $50 "destination" fee is crap, but they do offer some benefits that help offset  the fee

expect very small basic rooms. From the photos - looks like the Four Points has loud PTAC units. The Courtyard just opened late last year. May be better bet.
