Title: DansDeals Adventure DO
Post by: yehuda S on December 20, 2012, 03:47:59 PM
I've been thinking. This forum is full of people with tons of knowledge about different places and a love of travel. Sometimes it's really difficult to go places with just you or your family but maybe people can arrange a trip to somewhere exotic (like Madagascar) that you'd never be able to arrange by yourself and go with with a bunch of DDers.

Things like kosher food would be a lot easier to work out as will shuttle services etc..

Just a thought

No Debbie Downers on this thread.   :) Let's have some ideas, people. Everyone, leave a comment about that place you always dreamed of going to but never thought it possible.

Mine is a cruise to Antarctica.

antartica sounds great, but as a miles/points place it's pretty bad pick.   have to shell out a few grand for a cruise.  and lots of times, depending on the weather, you can't even make landfall.    there are a few tr's on ft about it.

africa is a place i would never take the family...

We might be able to reach out to an airline, like the MegaDOs. I realize that this isn't even close to that, but maybe a group booking dept could work something out. It is after all their most profitable program (awards)

If you can figure out a way to get 18k A3 for the flight, you can sell out a Y-only A380 in 5 minutes.

Off the fly I can think of a few things I would like to do:
  • (As mentioned) an Antarctica cruise
  • A trek in the Himalayas (Everest Base Camp or -easier to arrange, Anapurna)
  • An African Safari

Of the 3 I'm guessing #1 is the easiest to pull off, and the only one I have hope of bringing the wife and kid along for.
I'd be game for 1 or 3.

There kosher African Safaris all the time, not sure why you need to schlep all of us arein.

Antartica sounds cool, but I don't like boats. Perhaps a DDF charter (http://www.antarcticaxxi.com/).

People: There has to be a boat involved. You can't go to Antarctica and see it just by plane. Boats go close to shore, icebergs, penguins etc. you also can't exactly drive around Antarctica. Not too many gas stations if you know what I mean.

That's why most trips there are by boat.

You can fly there and then do the excursions by boat. From a halachic perspective that is probably the easiest way to do it, as going on a cruise would likely be a logistical nightmare with kosher and shabbos.

Semi non-sequitur here, but all the Antarctica talk reminded me of a fantastic series I recommend to everyone: BBC's Frozen Planet (the UK version with David Attenborough, not the crap version for US tv). And especially the episode about humans living in Arctic and Antarctic regions, I think it was the 6th episode, The Last Frontier. They spent a fair amount of the episode on the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, which is this amazing year round research station.

(Sorry for the lack of links, a little pressed for time. Maybe someone can come up with a few)

BTW a cruise like that shouldn't be too hard for a company like Kosherica to arrange. and IINM as long as most of the people on the boat aren't Jewish there are no Shabbos concerns (as long as the cruise starts in the first half of the week).

I'm pretty sure I would watch just about anything narrated by Attenborough. I loved that he actually made the trek to film in Antarctica and other extreme locales. The guy is well into his 80's and there he is, on camera in these far flung parts of the world.

I booked tickets last summer for a trip to alaska this summer. A trip like this would take serious planning and its never to early to start. I'm willing to invest time into planning it if people are interested.

I also wouldn't be able to go for another year and a half but I'd start planning now.

This guy said the boat reservation was around $10k though, that is a bit more than I can afford...

Ditto on all that. I also have a trip planned for this summer (either Alaska or Hawaii - still deciding).

And remember that the $10k was for a 3 week trip - a 7-10 day trip will (should?) be exponentially cheaper.

I think $2K is reasonable and I think I know one or two people who'd want to come as well.

Aha, December 25th time should be good for me.

Won't kosher food be a big problem to figure out? I assume people on these trips can't bring much luggage with them, so food they get there?

What time of year? I'd have to know, so I can check my schedule...

Here is some starter info:  http://wikitravel.org/en/Antarctica

I think the only real time to go is the Antarctic summer which I believe is winter here.

That's why we should start planning now. Personally I think I the need for kosher food is overrated. You can go ten days easily without meat and if you have a fruits vegetables, bread, and vacuum packed fish you have most of what you need.

I think Shabbos might be somewhat challenging.

You guys were funny. You're actually acting as if this will happen. We can barely coordinate a local DO. Have you seen the shabbos do thread? Or Dan trying to get people to come to cle?
And now you think you'll organize a trip to Antarctica?

The main reason I think so few of us have been to Antarctica is due to this issue (and shabbos). Going as a fully kosher group should I think help mitigate these issues. If we fill up a boat we could probably have a say in the food and scheduling...

I agree in this case it is silly and probably won't work out, but I think that is because there are to many variables and it won't work for everyone....

But I would not compare it to a DO or shabbaton. How much do you really want a DO? On the other hand going to Antarctica is a once in a life time experience and therefore people will actually really want it and willing to change their plans around it...

Also, arranging plans to go somewhere as a group in a year and a half is different than meeting up because you all just happen to be there.

Maybe we should a poll to the wiki about how bad you want to go on a scale of 1 - 10

Here is an article I found by a travel guru who says that by booking last minute cruises you get cheap fares, rarely as low as $2200 but more often at about $3500.

It's an interesting read:

All this talk about conga lines got me thinking...

While Antarctica is being worked out, here is a great idea for another kind of DansDeals Adventure:

Give another DDFer a budget and a date, and let them book your trip without telling you where you are going. You need to go to the airport and find out an hour before the flight where your destination is.

Should be lots of fun, just make sure your partner is someone you trust won't send you somewhere dangerous!

When you get back, reverse the roles!

Anyone up for this?

Winter is rainy season and at times that can close off the Kalalau trail (and Polihale access for that matter) completely.

Other than that the main advantage of winter is to escape from the east coast's winters!

Both. They want to keep it pristine, but they also have to manage it safely. There are often flash floods along the trail, and sometimes people have to be rescued by helicopter. They need to keep track of who goes in and out.

If you guys want to teach ppl photography, maybe go somewhere closer to home and sooner first.

No need to cancel the Hawaii trip but somewhere in the lower 48 would be much easier for people to attend.

Personally I'm thinking of going to Utah after Succos. Some where like Bryce Canyon or Zion National Park would an amazing place to practice photography skills.

August it is :)

Maybe we would hire a bootleg boat to take us out of the Kalalau Valley after a night or 2 and then skip over to the big island for a bootleg photo trip to the bleeding edge of an erupting volcano.

The problem with the volcano is that it’s impossible to plan far out. When I went last year, there hadn’t been an ocean entry in over a year. For months beforehand, I checked the daily reports for updates. As the trip came closer, the lava started breaking out, then slowly, excruciatingly, started to make its way to the ocean. Every day the flow would be a few feet closer. By the time I was two weeks out, the flow was about 200 feet from the ocean, and it looked like I’ll make it. But at the end, the flow did not only stop moving forward, it more or less stopped. And of course a week after I got home the flow finally hit the ocean L. Even now, some 8 months later, it’s fairly sporadic.

My point is that that until literally days before, you may bit even be sure of an ocean entry. Of course if the flow had been extremely strong for a while before it’ll probably still be there, but it still can’t be counted on 100%.

Of course there’s still the crater and lava lake, but these are not nearly as interesting or awesome

Not necessarily… On a practical level (for me at least), there no real difference between Hawaii and Utah except for a longer flight. If we want to do something closer it should be in the NY area like Marco Polo said – a fairly local day trip should be easy and accessible to most.

As far as attendance, more people is not necessarily better. Everyone could learn much more and get more out of it with a smaller group. Not to mention logisitcs.

And personally I can’t get away this winter, so for

Just got back from a 5 mile hike, rated a 10/10 on scale of difficulty by New York State Parks and Trail Commission... we're zonked, but we enjoyed. Bring on camping, baby!

And just out of curiosity how many of you have wives who have never been to Hawaii but would be ok with you going without her?

+100, not sure how this is gonna work for me, unfortunately.

DDF Wives DO at the GHK or SRP ;)

Work it out, and we may have a deal :)

What's there to work out? Start saving up your HGP/UR points.
Though my question is if your wife would rather be on the Kalalau Trail or at the GHK?

Miles isn't the problem... The problem is convincing my wife to stay at the GHK for a spa day or two while the boys head out to the trail.

She'd probably tell me "YOU stay at the GHK for a spa day, I'M going for the camping. See ya."

And maybe 5K points per person so we can get our photographer instructor a ticket there as well.

Most likely going to be based out of Israel, but I guess I can plan my bi-yearly trip to the US for then with LIH as a my final destination.. The $20 is a bummer though :(

Don't really have a choice, the permits sell out wayyyyy in advance as there are only 60 slots per night.  The weekend (the 15th-17th) is already fully booked.

Worse case scenario at this point is losing a few bucks for the permit.  Which can be easily scalped from what it seems based on craigslist demand.

Depends on a lot of factors.

Just a possible itin though even just Kalalau would be good enough for me:
Sunday, arrive in LIH, start trail and camp at Hanakoa.
Monday, hike to Kalalau Beach and camp the night.
Tuesday, hire a boat to take us back to civilization.  Fly to KOA, find a bootleg volcano tour to the current eruption.
Wednesday fly home? 4WD to Green Sands Beach, Waipio Valley, Mauna Kea 4WD routes, etc?
Might also be fun to take the 4WD road in Waimea to look down to Kalalau.

All this sounds really amazing, but...

- I don't think there's any way I could go to Hawaii without my wife :-\
- I can't take off from work twice in the summer, so I can't go just to teach and then go with my wife as a separate trip
- Most importantly, I'm still trying to figure out how to pay for this - I'm still in 'points debt' from the Alaska trip. So again, I'd I go, it'll have to be a vacation for us too.

For me (at this point) the best option would be a couple days teaching and the rest if the time vacationing.

So now I'm all confused :P. Help!

How long can you get away without the kid?
With 9 days you should be able to keep her happy even if you're missing for 2 in Kalalau in the middle of your trip.

Probably 10 days max. Maybe something like this:
Leave Sun 8/11
Kalalau Mon and Tue, return Wed am.
Have rest of Wed and most of Thu to ourselves, then 2 day shabbos.
Fly to the Big Island Sun am, then shoot the volcano into the night.
Ret. Mon pm or tue am.

That means a 9-10 day trip, 3-3.5 days instructing, 3-3.5 days travel and shabbos, and 2-2.5 days for ourselves.

Or maybe we could do this backwards, fist the volcano and then Kauai, it may work out better. I'll have to check into that after work.

I'll discuss it with my wife later, but I'm hopeful :D.

Let us know what you found so far...

So far a bunch of places have laughed at me for trying to get a fare below $5,000.

I'll keep trying though.

However, if any of you are ok with the $5k per person for winter 2014/15 let me know. (Not holding my breath though).

Price?
40K miles to get yourself NYC-LIH round-trip plus $20/night for a camping permit.
And maybe 5K points per person so we can get our photographer instructor a ticket there as well.

If this is the cost, I might be able to pull it off and join  :)   :D

Though I (may) need some help / direction on which points to accumulate and with the booking

Some awesome reading:

http://davidlurk.wordpress.com/category/kalalau-trail-memoirs/ (http://davidlurk.wordpress.com/category/kalalau-trail-memoirs/)

Also, AAAAAAAAARGH!!!:
Quote
I still had the high valleys to hike through. In and out, up and down. Trail damage from erosion still causing great worry. There were still plenty of small streams and waterfalls to replenish from. The miles slowly receded behind me.

I then came upon the most frightening aspect of the trail. A steep walled cliff trail, ten inches wide. I just stood and stared. You know, I read about this on the internet. People have turned around at this point never to return. Now it’s my turn. It looked formidable and frightening. It’s called Crawler’s Ledge.

I took a drink, got myself motivated, and made my way into the place. I started out fine. No big deal. But it gradually got worse. I found myself leaning away from the abyss on my right, yet the cliff wall on my left forced me to stand up straight as I negotiated through the cliff trail.

Then it got worse. My pack was wider than my body and was rubbing the cliff wall, and eventually forcing me to lean out towards the abyss. Panic started to set in.

Crawler’s ledge

Most people can easily walk on a 2-by-4 when it sits upon the ground. Move that 2-by-4 up five feet and it becomes a struggle to cross without some trepidation.

I was receiving some serious trepidation at this point. I stopped and thought about how I could pull this off without having to lean towards the drop off. I thought about getting down on all fours and crawling. No way. I thought about removing my pack and holding it in my arms as I sidestepped my way with my back to the wall. No, that’s stupid. I could turn and face the cliff wall and step sideways with my backpack hanging out over the precipice. Ok, I’ll try that.

I made my way in this manner a few yards but the cliff face forced me to lean back. Severe terror struck me, and vertigo. I began to shake uncontrollably. No way! I retreated.

I then wondered that maybe I could remove the contents from the left pockets of my pack and hang my bed roll vertically on the back. No, that’s silly. I just have to do this thing. This is that 2-by-4 business. Just do it.

I tried again. I turned slightly to face the wall moving my pack slightly over the edge. In this manner, I could not make a regular step. I could only shuffle my right foot along and follow it with my left. I did this for several shuffling steps with some success but again the irrational thoughts bombarded my reasoning. The tension built up and I began to shake uncontrollably from the stress.

Finally, after prevailing over the ridiculous thoughts, I began to move. Slowly, shuffling my feet, I made some headway. My face was so near the wall, I couldn’t see too far ahead. The most I could do was watch where I placed my right foot and hope that the left followed. A snails pace.

Time had no meaning. It was just that wall and my right foot. Gradually the wall started to lean away from my face and I was able to rest. It still wasn’t over but the worst seemed behind me. The cliff edge was still just inches from my foot but at least I could take a regular stride. I rounded a corner and had just a little real-estate to stop, relax, and observe the trail ahead. It wasn’t as bad. There was still the long drop to the breaking surf below but at least the incline of the cliff wall tilted away from the trail.

Grinning, the knot in my stomach loosened and I relaxed a little. This country humbles you. Something could happen in an instant. I could really get killed. It made me feel insignificant. This is the way it has to be. I took a drink and continued on.

Not specifically, but from my end personally the smaller the group the better. With 5-6 people I could give everyone more help and individual guidance; not so much with 10 people.

Also for the hiking part (which is most of the adventure, after all), I'd think that smaller groups would be more efficient. Imagine 10 people trying to cross one of the major rivers, or on one of the 6-inch wide stretches of trail...

Just my $0.02.

Experience you can get much closer by, in the city in a forest, sunset and sunrise also happen closer to home, the fact that the landscape is less appealing doesn't change in the benefit of the lessons.

I wouldn't burn precious vacation time on it, just my thought.

Quality of the pictures? probably yes.

I wouldn't burn precious vacation time on it, just my thought.
Or it can be looked at as killing two birds with one stone. If one is truly interested in the photography aspect, it wouldn't be considered wasting time.

nothing concrete, i just booked tickets during the united partner sale in Feb, haven't really done any serious planning yet, just researched my options. was trying to convince a friend to come, but it didn't work out. as far as my references go, i met up with a fellow DDFer for an Abu Dhabi trip and that worked out excellently (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=52483.0). i don't mind going myself but when i read the law that to leave town you're obligated to carry a gun (i own a gun in Michigan), i decided maybe i should look for someone to join...
PS, i took advantage of united's one free stopover and open Jaw to make the most out of my trip, heres the itinerary

7/27 ABZ - CPH
7/28 CPH - ATH
7/29 ATH-IST-OSL-LYR
7/31 LYR-OSL-LHR
i've wanted to visit all the above cities and only have a week off
i'm london based as of now. anyone is welcome to join for the whole trip, or only the longyearbyren part.

No polar bears in Monsey.

Quote from: Wikipedia link=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard#Nature
Polar bears are the iconic symbol of Svalbard, and one of the main tourist attractions.[100] While protected, anyone outside of settlements is required to carry a rifle to kill polar bears in self-defence, as a last resort, should they attack;[101] a British schoolboy was killed by a polar bear in 2011.[102] Svalbard and Franz Joseph Land share a common population of 3,000 polar bears, with Kong Karls Land being the most important breeding ground.

I've always wanted to see a rocket launch, but was never in FL when they were actually doing one.
Flying in for it is hard because they often reschedule - at least on revenue.
After getting into the miles game, it's easier on an avios ticket (well, unless they reschedule within 24 hours of flight).
In any case, the next launch from Canaveral (1 hr drive from MCO) is scheduled for 7/15 11:36am, and I booked the AA JFK->MCO flight at 7am (arriving 9:30, so I hope to have enough time to get the car and drive over there).

Anyone interested in coming for a spaceflight DO? :)

Once saw one from a plane window...

Tempting, but the CLE flight doesn't arrive until 9:46.
Slight delay and it's all in-vain.

It's 35 minutes to the coast (Titusville) where you can see the launch. 1hr to Playalinda beach, which is the closest point to the pad you can get. So if running late you can stop at the coast and watch from there.

Plus time to get off the plane, get to the car rental facility, etc.
Seems risky to me.

Do they not have afternoon launches?

I was in MIA when the final Shuttle mission launched. It still hurts that I couldn't make it up there :'(.

For us in the Northeast, the Wallops Flight Facility in VA might be a better option:

https://www.nasa.gov/content/nasa-wallops-visitor-center-launch-viewing/#.VZ3uFXpVhBc

In fact, the launches are sometimes visible from NYC as well. I will yet get a picture like this one day ;D:

It all depends on where they need to get the satellite to.
Next one is scheduled for July 22, 8pm.

But they get delayed even more often than airlines :)

Yeah, I wasn't able to see that one from where i was at the time, still regretting it.
They don't launch as often as Canaveral, and the last big one blew up quite spectacularly if I remember correctly.

I have a friend who is a space nut. Apparently NASA sometimes has these lotteries for spots to see it even closer than the locations listed below, and he enlisted all his friends to enter the lottery for him.

It was pretty wild actually, it used to be they would only give 20 permits per day (dont have any current info) 10 online - you had to get it 3 months in advance- they said it sold out each day for 3 months in the future. but they also gave out 10 permits on a first come first serve basis in the kanob UT  NATL monument field office. I was with 3 other guys and they opened at 7:30 and we were there at 7:45 and got passes 6,7,8 and 9 for the day! So, we were pretty lucky, what was even crazier was that- some other hiker came over to us after seeing our tsitsis and said " tsitsis- I haven't seen tstisis in Kanob in over 35 years!" We were shocked that on the border of utah and AZ someone would even be able to recognize a yid. then we went our way to the dirt road. That is the basics of the story!

I would have to get out my external hard drive to find those pics- this will have to do for now: http://www.thewave.info/CoyoteButtesNorth/index.html

my bad forgot to tell you about that. So, when you get your permit, they give you 2 pgs of pictures that have arrows on them and they say- as you are hiking you should see these sand dunes, or buttes etc.. and walk between them etc. so basically by just pictures- it was crazy. pretty pretty wild. our problem wasn't getting to the wave- it was getting out form the wave- they dont give you pictures for that, BH there was a former pilot with some crazy GPS system and we followed him the 3 mile hike back to the car

Indeed. Although seems likely that effective January they will only hold two lotteries (one Dec 1 for Jan-July, one June 1 for July-Dec) and that instead of having first come first serve for the remaining ten tickets, they will hold a lottery two days prior.

Because Kalalau might actually happen ;)

Who here has 10 grand to blow on Antarctica? And what do you do with kids for that long?

I know I'm dredging up a 2 year old thread, but I saw some referrals to my website from DansDeals and found this thread after a quick google search! Haha I do still owe a trip report!! Dan kindly helped me figure out cheap LAN flights to get to the Falklands on miles.

Also if I can be of any assistance with an Antarctica trip, I'm happy to help haha. But honestly our trip was very unique. We tagged along with Stewart Mcpherson, a natural history presenter (think David Attenborough), who was filming an episode of his soon to be released series "Britain's Treasure Islands." He kindly offered us to join at cost - so we just split 1/6 of the cost of the private charter. It was still about $10K per person for 30 days on the boat, all food and lodging included.

So I actually have no idea how to get a normal cruise to Antarctica.

But I would say a few things:

- If you ever do plan to go I would go for more than 2 weeks. Our boat was a slower vessel so it took about 5 days of sailing to get from the Falklands to the Peninsula, but even the faster tourist boats take at least 3 days each way, so if you only go for 2 weeks about half of that time is just being sea-sick on the boat. Also Antarctica itself is huge, we only went a few degrees south along the tip of Antarctica and didn't get close to the Arctic circle. If you only went for two weeks it'd be a very short trip. I'd say 3 weeks minimum, and ideally 4.
- Ushuaia is the easiest place to book a tour from, and they are fairly common. I believe 30K tourists visit yearly.

Lastly, I just got back from a trip to Greenland, also with Stew! It was very similar, but I'd suggest going to Antarctica first as it is more mind-blowing. You can see some photos at my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/EricLewPhotography

And my website: www.ericlew.com (click the greenland link)

Ok and I do owe a trip report. But i didn't take any photos of planes or hotels or anything... so any ideas for what to do for that?

Not too bad. SEA-JNU prices out at a svelte $175 in Sabre for economy, IIRC. Even with manually adding stops, it was well under $1k.

My guess is he wants to do OW.

Personally I'm conflicted on it, on one hand I don't want to go all the way there and not do it fully. I kinda feel like I'm cheating myself, like I'll always have an "asterisk" on this trip.

OTOH, having done the first two miles I see just how grueling it is...

Maybe:
Arrive Sunday night into LIH.

Hiking it one way is cheating?  How so?  You really looking forward to lugging all your photo gear rt?

As for me, even if I wanted DW would never let me run off on my own.

Monday: Have camping gear and food boated in, hike to Kalalau, BBQ
Tuesday: Explore Kalalau Valley
Wednesday: Explore a bit and get boated out.

If I lose 30 pounds I think I could ;D

Let me book what's available now (Y out, J in) and we'll take it from there.
I can't either fit well, but I'm 6'4 200 So not sure if you can't fit horizontally or your vertically challenged like me.
I'm not spoiled, I'm used to Y. How long once I cancel will it go back to the system, I want dan to be able to chap it. We need to coordinate

Not a problem for a 6-foot-8 guy - within 30 seconds all light bulbs were unscrewed and we were good to go ;D.
And size 21 shoes IIRC  ;D

I am nervous about this, no doubt. Hardly a specimen of being in shape :(
But being able to have gear boated in and out and only hiking one way makes it doable for me. I hope.

Would love to hear how it compares to Waimea's grand loop hike that I did. Was really rough, but glad I did it before they closed it for good.

All joking aside how strenuous is this? It is list in America’s 10 Most Dangerous Hikes.  :-\

While the whole hike is actually 22 miles round trip along the Na’apali Coast, there is an opportunity to do an 8-9 mile round trip to hike to the beautiful Hanakapi’ai Beach, and then a bit farther in to the stunning Hanakapi’ai Falls.

Let me get it out of the way: This hike is a MUST-DO. Definitely one of the prettiest hikes we’ve ever done, and you’d be a fool to go to LIH and not do it. That said, I must admit it was also one of the more difficult hikes we’ve ever done. Warning: Bring lots of water. Leave some gas in the tank for the return portion or you won’t make it. The hike is deceptively hard.

So the shliach to TBI has done this hike a few times and says the hike in is nicer than the hike out.

His suggestion is:
Monday: Have camping gear and food boated in, hike to Kalalau, BBQ
Tuesday: Explore Kalalau Valley
Wednesday: Explore a bit and get boated out.

If you get rid of the hiking and camping part and add a couple more BBQ's, I might be in

Unfortunately full loop was closed when we were there so this may not be helpful... but we did the awa'waapuhi part of the trail and we did the full kalalau in and out two days later. Kalalau is much harder (and better). Doesn't even compare. Would obv be much easier without all the equipment but a lot of climbing up and down the valley. Gorgeous views make it totally worth it though.

And yes, you will regret not doing it. Definitely the highlight of our trip
Title: Re: DansDeals Adventure DO

Not much of a comparison without the loop.  The most impressive and scary parts were on the connector hike.

The "scary" parts were not actually that scary when we did it but I can see it being treacherous if it were wet

Do you have a Kalalau TR?
Title: Re: DansDeals Adventure DO
Post by: an613 on August 31, 2015, 02:46:44 PM

Wednesday/Thursday we had decided we were going to do the Kalalau Trail so we woke up early but waited until the Grand Club opened at 630 so we could grab a bite before we left. When I asked about the smoked salmong being kosher, the lady offered to get us Kosher Bagels from oahu kosher for the rest of our stay which was really nice. We left around 645 and headed up north. By the time we got to trail head it was about 9 AM. We had one semi-big hiking knapsack and a small school bag. Other than what we were wearing, we didnt bring much with us: a tent, our blankets from delta first class, flip flops, some food, water purification tablets, bug spray and a camera. And of course the most important thing: toilet paper. The only thing we forgot to bring was matches/lighter. We were planning on eating La Briute meals for dinner so I didnt think about bringing anything for a bonfire but it was stupid bc wouldve been nice to have a fire. The hike itself was awesome. Incredibly grueling because you hike up and down 5 different mountains/valleys but the lanscape in each one was completely different and the views the entire way were just stunning. As Dan said about the Grand Loop - there are some images that will forever be embedded in my mind. We didn't take any of the detours on the way in because we started a bit late and wanted to get to Kalalau before sunset. We met several ppl along the way including a couple who was carrying their <1 yr old baby on her back (Dan, might be harder with two, but its doable!). The way in was hard because distances arent marked so you don't know exactly how far you are but the Revealed app helped a lot here in making sure we were on the right path and also telling us roughly how far along we were. Miles 7-8 was freaky - you are literally climbing down and then up a mountain on an 6 inch path along the side of a cliff. Not a single extra inch to your left and if you step two inches to the right and you're tumbling ~2000 feet to rocks below you. We got to the beach around 5, set up our tent just behind the beach in the camping area and chilled at the beach for an hour until sunset. Sunset was unbelievable and seemed to just go on forever. Besides for about 5-8 hippies who seemed to be there for several weeks already, there were only about 3 other groups of ppl there. Ate our la briute meals and went to bed (this is where a bonfire would have been nice)

Thursday, we woke up early, davened and packed up and were on the trail by 745. The hike out felt much quicker, partially because we were doing it quicker and partially it just felt quicker because we knew the terrain and trail so knew what to expect. We made it Hanakoa by 1015 so we took the 1/2 mile detour to the falls, hung out there for a bit and continued on. It was bout this point that we started feeling blisters in our feet because we were wearing reg sneakers and didnt have proper hiking shoes (not big ones but enough to hurt). Somewhere along the way we looked down at the water and noticed a whole school of dolphins jumping in and out of the water which was so cool.  We got back to the trailhead about 345, nervous our car would be gone and/or damaged but thank gd it was still there in one piece. Caked in mud and sweat, we left, stopped for some water (i've never appreciated cold, clean and clear water so much before!), dropped our tent off and went back to hotel. We cleaned up and went to the spa to help our poor bodies heal.

Overall the hike was awesome and very easy to recommend to anyone who likes hiking and is somewhat in shape. It wasn't easy but the views were totally worth it. If you're not into hiking and/or aren't interested in camping out in a tent on a beach somewhere, then i would still highly recommend the first part of the hike, up to hanakapiai beach (we didn't go to hanakapiai falls so cant comment on that 2 mile extension). Its only 2 miles each way (albeit uphill half the way) but we saw all kinds of ppl doing it: 70 year olds and 7 year olds, ppl wearing hiking shoes and ppl wearing no shoes and even a dog. The views from even that part are really amazing so definitely worth doing as a half day hike.

Ok maybe slightly scarier than im remembering it now, but without bags should be easier

I know a nutcase who hiked in during the day and right back out at night.  Seems like its less frightening if you can't see the drop offs.  Apparently he didn't care for the people hanging out and using drugs at the beach and didn't want to spend the night there.  He also met a guy using meth on the trail.

We can only book MAO for 30k after March 22nd anyways.
Do you have any interest in machu picchu?
Btw thanks for arousing my interest in the Kalalau trail, and teaching me about Korean to HI, just booked for 20k SPG ;)
I got the DSLR bundle off your site and gonna take a photography course before I go.
I got the Lihue guidebook with the Amazon discount.
I sure will be having you in mind

+1. Was there in July and the water levels were really high, according to my tour guide, overall best month to go is September.

Other than running around in your birthday suit , what's the plan for the day in the valley?

Didn't know about this book, thanks for pointing it up. I'll be up late tonight reading it ;)
I got The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, but predictably it didn't tell me anything about the trail that I didn't already know.

Everyone's food and gear list is slightly different, but here's the general gist (in the TR I'll comment what was helpful and necessary, and what wasn't)

GEAR
hiking backpack
4 person lightweight tent
Sleeping pad
Silk Sleeping bag liner (in lieu of a sleeping bag)
Poncho
Trekking pole
Hiking socks/sock liners
Water bottle + filter/chemicals
Swimsuit
Light weight jacket
Hiking boots
Sunscreen
Strong mosquito repellent
Pocket knife
Hiking towel
Synthetic pants and shirt which dry quickly and retain heat when wet.

FOOD
Dried salami
Tuna
Trail mix
Protein/energy bars
Cheese sticks
Baked potatoes
Chocolate
Chalva (very high in protein)

Dan any other ideas what to add to these lists?

Trekking pole

Two are worlds better than one, I'd suggest poles.

Died salami

I would hope. Otherwise you'll have a heck of a time chasing it up and down the valley .

IME one trekking pole is all you need when carrying packs under 40lbs and there is no snow. Two would be cumbersome
Of course that may vary with one's body weight ;)

At least there will be paths.
Try mountain climbing where it snows daily so there are no paths and you're blindly following a compass bearing in a whiteout so thick you can't see your hand if you hold it a foot away from your face ;)

I'm theoretically interested. How many days would the hike take? How experienced are you?
Also do you have the means/miles to fly J class to JRO? Because I wouldn't want to fly economy so far
That would be a great use of AA miles pre-devual, as I believe AA now allows you to route though DOH to get to Africa

I wouldn't rush to book pre-deval as J ain't changing much.  I'd love that trip but I'll already be away the first week in September :(

Is this really a good idea in the winter? In terms of rain ruining the trail or your fun and making it dangerous as well as the tide eating up Kalalau Beach.

2. They are already going this weekend, what does this accomplish?

1. I'd have a much different attitude about going in the summer. Why would such an attitude mean they'd "never" go?
2. I'm curious to know. Perhaps they're very excited for the possibility of rain and the added adventure and don't think it would take away from the fun at all. And perhaps they would explain to me that Kalalau doesn't often disappear in the winter as opposed to other beaches like Hanakapi'ai.

Look, its not like there's drastic changes in the weather between summer & winter as you well know, we're talking about stronger currents on the north shore. In terms of the trail being closed theirs always that risk, although it hasn't been closed in the past few months.
An added benefit of doing the trail in the winter is that there's less people on the trail & no one boating or kayaking in to kalalau beach, most importantly these dates worked for us.

I've been doing a bunch of research on something like this for a while, I may as well share my info...

For starters, you can't do the whole ANC-SEA or VV run. You need to split it up in JNU.

Secondly, window seats sell out incredibly early, so get booking.

It could also be had quite cheaply on points, but if you want a 24h layover on the route anywhere other than JNU you need to book rev over the phone.

There are actually three separate milk run routes, and some are more interesting than others. IMO AS64/65 is the best, due to the PSG-WRG segment. The plane skims the top of the mountains during the incredibly short flight, and the views are crazy.

Red: AS61/66
Yellow: AS64/65
Green: AS62/67 (FAI SB only)
Click the link below for the full routes, as in the map some routes are obscured by others.

Lol. But still no. You need to position in SEA, wait for the milk run (whose timing does not necessarily match up), fly JNU-ANC, then bush plane into Katmai. That in itself could take two days.

Even if you play around with the different run routes and directions, you still spend entire days in transit.

Katmai National Park is amazing and well worth the trip.  We were there once and I wanted to go back.  However, when I called I was told that if you want to reserve a cabin you need to book 2 years in advance as a bunch of tour companies take up most of the available spots.  If you are willing to rough it, there is a campground surrounded by an electric fence and you should be able to find availability there.  In the alternative, you can keep calling to see if there are any last minute cancellations for the cabins.

Looks cool, but not nearly as cool as the UA Island Hopper IMHO.

Maybe one year @AJK will edit the video he took of the takeoffs and landings of UA154...

That could actually be fun. Any way to set up a script or something where I can send an email and it gets posted automatically to a specific DDF thread?

At work they've learned not to ask me "can it be done?"
The question is virtually always "what's involved?" Or "how difficult would it be?"

Wouldn't it be easier to send it to a designated person to post in your place? You can always mod it after

That would be the beta version :P. Automating it would work 24h, and so on.

Maybe something involving Telegram? I know that it can be set up for all kinds of bots.

My satellite thingy can send to a phone number, email, Twitter or FB. Can we set up a bot where one of those gets forwarded to Telegram, and then Telegram somehow posts here?

Just thinking out loud here.

Dont expect to get anything similar to a SF trip without SF.

Do you mean @Something Fishy  vibes or do you mean just booking and joining tours and renting cars is not similar to  SF? because it is pretty much very easy to join Svalbard polar tours, renting cars in Lofoten and the North Atlantic Highway, I just do not feel comfortable driving around Lofoten and the North Atlantic highway solo.
