Title: Acer laptop seems to have hardware problems
Post by: churnbabychurn on January 08, 2013, 08:22:27 PM
Occasionally: does not charge, Freezes, shuts itself down, USB ports dont work, acts as if a key is stuck ie screen flashes.
Bought it from b&h six months ago on a spg card.
does this sound like a hardware problem? Will the manufacture refund it?

When I bought it I figured I dont know much about laptops il call B&H, and see what they recommend. I asked the sales guy specifically about the quality of Acer vs "Brand names" he said its just as good as HP, Dell etc bla bla, I knew it was bs...

you can't go by name - every manufacturer has better build / designed laptops and worse. Sometimes you have a $1000 laptop not built and not as reliable as a $500 laptop

I called Acer, the guy insist that I must do a Acer system restore before being able to send it to them to verify that its not a software problem.
While acer backs up files, all programs will be deleted. My question is whether the microsoft office that I purchased from The "cheapkey" guys will reactivate on my machine after restore?
Also whether Crashplan restores just files or also programs?
(Btw, the guy said that the computer shutting down by itself is a probably a software problem and the not charging is probably due to static)

1) You can reinstall office once you're done - using the same product key.
2) Programs can't be backed up usually only data - programs have to be installed using a proper exe file etc. (there are some backups that say they can restore programs but I find them unreliable usually.
3) Unless you see a blue screen or error message its unlikely that its shutting down only due to software.

Don't go by brand, go by family or model. Obviously everything depends on your budget, but certain laptops tend to have better designs than others and are considered more durable.

This is what I can tell you from my experience in working on 1000's of diff laptops.

Dell:
Precision - Very powerful desktop replacements - great warranty, ridiculously expensive - Usually overpriced or overkill

Latitude - Good Laptops - Great warranty! Highly recommended for any Business environment - Sometimes expensive.

Vostro  - Lower end Business Machines - Better Priced - still durable - Usually 1 Year warranty.

XPS - The nicer looking dell machines, Some are better than others...

Inspiron - YMMV Every model is different

HP:

Pavilion - YMMV (Some better than others)

Probook - Stable durable business systems - Usually a little on the heavy side.

Elitebook - Business Higher end systems, usually pretty expensive

ENVY - Used to be the HP sleek and nicer systems, they pretty much replaced most of the standard pavilions now and call them either ENVY or sleekbooks

Sleekbook - like it sounds slimmer line of laptops

Can anyone recommend a local [Lakewood] computer repair guy who can take a quick look and tell me if its hardware or software problem? (For cheap?)
I really dont wanna do a hard reset, pay shipping plus wait a couple of weeks to send to Acer if not necessary.

Recently the lap top has been behaving fine, though Im still concerned. I put my ear to the laptop and I can hear that something spinning does not sound smooth, IE there is a faint, occasional rattling sound. Would this confirm a hardware problem that warrants a shipment back to acer?

If you're having so many issues on a machine under warranty maybe try to get it replaced. Very possible it's a fan issue, and that's the sound you hear, and in that case it may be shutting down due to overheating.

Ok, Typically don't they just repair/replace a part?

If you bought it with amex - try to repair whatever you need under manufacturers warranty, and once amex kicks in get an repair estimate for every issue and they will prob replace it if it costs enough to repair

You can always call the customer care for the issue and get it resolved if the laptop is in warranty period. I will recommend extending the warranty time period.
