Sold it a few years ago. He also owned the apartment next door, but most of the view from that apartment was robbed by Aish. I'm not in it, but my uncles are, and possibly an aunt or 2, I can't tell.

They did everything, there was $10s of millions lost in property value. If you walk behind Aish, you will see apartments with big bay windows pointing to... the back of Aish

That's not the whole story. At the time that Aish got the property and announced plans to build (20+ years ago) many of the people sold pretty low and the new people who bought gambled on the fact that Aish wouldn't get done. Same story with most of the buildings in the plaza area. The Goren family has done quite well for themselves :)

Well to see if this can go any more off topic, the apartment was bought by a guy who snapped, got locked up, and nothing has really been done to the apartment. Name plate is still on the door, and supposedly the locks were never changed. Last rumor I heard was that it was being sold to a Chabad run museum

There's something about Apts in the Old City. The guy who owns the most apts there took off on his boat a few months ago and vanished

From what I've heard from a Rabbi at Aish, the law is that the height of all buildings were "grandfathered" at the time the Old City was recaptured, i.e. as tall as any given building was at the time, it could be knocked down and rebuilt up to that height forever. This is true even if only part of the building was standing. In Aish's case, one wall of the previous structure on that spot remained after the war... which was enough to get them the rights to build their entire new building to that height.
