Title: DansDeals Database Discussion of Diapers: Master Thread
Post by: Yeki89 on March 03, 2013, 11:14:09 PM
What brand do you use, and where do you get them from.

I get from target, use my target card for 5% back, and have them ship free to my door.

Also use target, but I typically buy them on sale in store with a coupon.

Amazon Mom, shipped to my door, no tax.  Use Swaddler for size 1-2 and switch to Luvs once they hit size 3.

Luvs are probably the worst diapers out there. Not saying they don't work at all, but they definitely leak the most. Data point: Same maker as Pampers, but much cheaper - for a reason.

-1 in my experience.  been using them for 4 kids now and have never had a problem.  but each kid is different so you gotta keep trying 'til u find what works for you.  also, they come with a guarantee so if they leak you can get a refund.

Huggies lil snugglers and then huggies little movers
i prefer the build to pampers, they fit better and close tighter without squeezing and IMHO they absorb the best!

Cloth diapers do not leak! They have an inner absorbent part and an outer waterproof layer.

When we went to Israel last year, we used disposable diapers on the trip. EVERY outfit the baby wore got dirty and stained from explosive diapers! We did not have leaks before or since with the cloth diapers we use at home!

Other reasons to use cloth:
No chemicals (like in disposables)
Saves a lot of money (especially if you have more than one in diapers, which we do)
If you're running out, just wash them - no need to run out shopping
You have room in your cart for groceries because you don't have diapers filling up the cart
You can tell your friends you care about the environment (just don't tell them you use other types of disposable products!)

-1  pampers may be slightly softer but IME huggies have significantly more cushioning.
Pampers use some sort of chemical to absorb (hence those nasty crystal like things on your kids bottom) but huggies makes a thicker better padded diaper to allow it to absorb that much more

I'm not so keen about putting that stuff on my baby's butt but I've only found one other brand of diapers that don't contain SAP, but they had mixed reviews, so I don't really have a choice.
We use Seventh Generation Free and Clear, which does use SAP but seals it in very well. I've never seen any of the crystals leak out.
They are also not bleached with chlorine and its byproduct dioxin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superabsorbent_polymer), a known carcinogen-which is the main concern for me.

Yes. Called the wake-to-sleep method (http://www.parents.com/baby/sleep/issues/advice/) and it works very well.

Any good deals out there for newborn diapers? I think we skipped straight to size 1 with my first son, so that's what we stocked up with beforehand. But son #2 is in newborn for now, so I'm looking for relatively small packages on the cheap. My wife would definitely prefer Swaddlers, but if there's a really good deal on something else I'd be interested.

TIA

The hospital we were at sent us home with 5 packages of NB diapers and a package of size 1. Baby was in NB for about a month and we never needed to buy any :)

I think NB diapers are the cheapest size (swaddlers).

We have one small (probably in the range of 30) package of newborn, the hospital for some reason only put size 1 in our baby's bassinet cabinet thing. We can probably get away with switching to size 1 whenever we finish the newborn package, but another ~30 pack or 2 would probably be fine too.

If you are still in the hospital, empty the bassinet drawer after every shift and the new nurse will see that the diapers have run out and restock.  You cna also tell them that the size 1 are too big, they will give you NB sign instead.

When your leaving ask them if they can send you home with some extra diapers and formula samples..

Yes, the nurses might catch on and they are happy to help out. Pampers gives the hospital free diapers to encourage patients to buy their brand..

I posted well after we left, and yes, we cleared out the bassinet drawers a few times (not our first rodeo). However, according to my wife at least, they don't stock size N at this hospital, only preemie and 1. Not sure why this would be and idn't think to confirm, but she said she asked.

I think we should all post the price per diaper. I buy Luvs in Shoprite, when they're on sale for 16.99 for the big box (every few weeks). Currently I'm buying size 6, 66 per box, =,
0.257 per diaper
-10% (baby bucks) =
0.231 PD.
I believe size 4 has 80 per box =
0.191 PD!!
Anybody beat that?

I think we should all post the price per diaper. I buy Luvs in Shoprite, when they're on sale for 16.99 for the big box (every few weeks). Currently I'm buying size 6, 66 per box, =,
0.257 per diaper
-10% (baby bucks) =
0.231 PD.
I believe size 4 has 80 per box =
0.191 PD!!
Anybody beat that?

Also, there is a $1 coupon to clip for Pampers diapers.

Total was $16.75. $.087 a diaper! Thanks.

Gotta love it when you get excited about buying diapers!

Pampers gives the hospital free diapers to encourage patients to buy their brand..
we went to ocean medical center in brick NJ and they did not carry smallee then size one , well at least we stocked up on those now were just waiting for my daughter to fit into them...in the hospital they had to fold them in half :)

most people don't choose the hostipal based on the amount of free diapers they get.  ;)

No, but a better hospital may have a more attentive staff who take care of every detail down to the diapers

Maybe in NY/NJ - The trick is to bring food/cake/cookies/chocolate to the nursing staff, they will be much nicer to you.
Where I live, the care is exceptional regardless of what you bribe the nurses with.

Funny how in six pages no-one mentioned CVS and Costco. Costco only has huggies (sorry Dan) but with 6$ coupon every 2-3 months they are for sure one of the cheapest options.
Now for CVS:
Last time I got 4 packages of 31 Huggies @ $9.49 each with card. I had two $3 off and two $2 off a package coupons and $5 off $30 cvs purchase and got $12 ECB. Can usually work out similar price with pampers.
9.49*4+ tax is $40.90 - 27 is $13.90 for 124 size 4's or 11 cents per... Thanks kosher on a budget...
It also mixes thing up as the managers at CVS are more impressed with the pile of coupons than the 2 vr or visa gc's.

+1000000, there's nothing more frustrating than paying a fortune for diapers and almost every time you go to change them it leaked through. However, I have never had a problem with target and the price is unbeatable

There is also a target coupon on coupons.target.com for $1.50 off (don't forget to print two) and coupons in the said boxes (2 in each box) for $2.50 off... I happened to have 2 of the $2.50 off, now I have 4, I guess...

+1. And don't forget to check Cartwheel too. Haven't bought anything but Target for diapers and wipes for a while now because these deals come around often enough.

Anybody have experience with Kirkland Signature (Costco) diapers? I am currently using target brand diapers (price point is nice but I don't yet have a red card as I need to find out if debit card does a pull similar to some bank accounts), but I'm wondering if I will get better value with Costco. All tips greatly appreciated!

I like Target over Costco.
Get the red card (debit)
No pull
And use the cartwheel app, it always has an additional 5% off

Costco diapers worked pretty well for me but started leaking when my daughter got older. Also, I don't think they are cheaper than targets.

Swaddlers from Amazon - s&s has solid prices and amazon mom is helpful as well... But aside from the pricing, the auto delivery is so easy, it just comes every month don't have to go out and buy a big box of diapers, don't even have to think about it!

Seems though like target, even before the Red Card discount and Cartwheel app, is significantly cheaper. As far as the auto delivery goes, you also must remember to adjust it anyway as the baby advances through sizes correct?

So you also don't need to think about the price? The base price for the diapers changes, and you for auto deliveries you get charged the price in effect at that time.

Aside from the Amazon Mom promos that ran a few times over the last year or so (as high as $25 off 'first' case of diapers), Target is significantly cheaper. In addition to the REDcard and Cartwheel savings, they often have deals where you get $5 or more back when you buy at least 2 cases.

Nobody is doubting that target is cheaper then pampers on amazon mom. If someone specifically wants to get pampers brand, then amazon is a great option, be sure to check out their warehouse deals.

When buying target diapers make sure
You buy the best value case size. Bigger usually is cheaper but often times smaller ones are on sale
Look for their gift card offers when buying multiple cases
Use cartwheel, almost always an additional %5 off
Look online for printable coupons. Like right now they have 1.50 off 2.
 And use red card
