And on this topic, my netbook doesn't really play movies loud enough for me to hear on my headphones while flying. This appears to be a software limitation, since I know my headphones can play louder. So this is stupid, because why does the software limit the volume like that. There should be some patch I can download that will make the controls go louder. But I can't find such a thing by googling.

Sounds like that would be a limitation of your net books internal sound card. It probably isn't powerful enough to drive your headphones properly.

ipod headphones
iPod headphones are very low impedance headphones, meaning they are very easy to drive.
I think the combination of the weak netbook sound card and the external noise from the airplane is preventing you from hearing the headphones properly.
I would suggest getting a cheap pair of in ear headphones.
#1 They block out sound and lots of it. A decent pair can you give a 20-30db external noise reduction, which is almost equivalent to wearing a pair of earplugs.
#2 They sound at least 5 times better than iPod headphones.
#3 They are easily powered, which means you wont have any issues using them with your netbook.
I have had great experiences with this pair. $20 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HCFKNY/?tag=cl03f-20

In terms of noise cancellation, especially on airplanes, the QC 15's are actually pretty good. The active noise cancellation system is actually specifically tuned to cancel out airplane noise frequencies.

Where they are lacking is with the sound quality. An active noise cancellation system reduces ambient noise by pumping in additional frequencies which are the 180 degree opposite of the waveform that you trying to cancel out, making the whole frequency wave blend together and become inaudible. Being that the active system is introducing opposing frequencies to your ears, they are also canceling out frequencies which are part of the music/movie/whatever you are listening to. Active noise cancellation inherently reduces the sound quality of the headphones.

If you need active noise cancellation, 2 far better options in the passive/active over ear headphone market, are the AKG K490 $250 http://amzn.to/Z7tzve (http://amzn.to/Z7tzve) or ATH-ANC9 $300 http://amzn.to/YhWPnc. AKG and Audio Technica are both highly respected names in the high-end audio market. Both of these pairs offer far better sound quality than the QC 15's and can be used without the noise cancellation system, which means you can still use them if the battery dies. If I was buying an active system I would get the Audio Technica's.

The reviews seem to say that Bose are more comfortable and are better on airplanes.
I'm not such a audiophile that I need the best of the best in sound quality, I just enjoy not hearing the airplane drone and being able to comfortably listen to anything I want on a plane.

If they work for you thats great. The Bose are certainly very comfortable and work well on airplanes.
My point is that for $300, you can do much better.
IMO, the best combination of noise reduction and sound quality would be the the Etymotic ER 4 $280 http://amzn.to/Zj52qd.  (http://amzn.to/Zj52qd.)
In-ear headphones with noise isolation of 35-42db at any frequency(all passive), which is tops in the headphone market and excellent sound quality to boot.
Some people don't like in-ear headphones though.

Yes for all active noise cancellation headphones. The 2 linked pairs above just do a much better job than the Bose at sound reproduction in general as well as tuning the active noise cancellation system to reduce degradation in the audio signal.

Again, great for music, but I would never be able to sleep on a plane with those in my ears.
The Bose have enough padding that they don't bother me when sleeping.

For me the only purpose of these is for the benefit on a plane, I rarely use them otherwise.

12 Years a slave was boring. A few members of the academy didn't even see it, they just voted for it because they didn't want to seem racist.

Philomena was incredible.

Nebraska was good but also, a little slow.

American Hustle was great for anyone that hasn't seen the BBC show "hustle" (it was like a 2 hour episode but not as good)

Even if you were correct that this is considered zuto shel yam, the siman you quoted points out that if dina d'malchusa says you have to give back zuto shel yam then you are chayav to give it back.

Have you asked a posek regarding this? I will (just sent an email to a friend of mine to ask) and I highly doubt this constitutes zuto shel yam. Please let me know who you asked.

Also, to assume that you have the sole interpretation of halacha and anyway else who would pasken differently "has to figure out if his frumkiet is real or just fake" is probably the most haughty thing I've heard all day.

Eh, it was difficult to appreciate Captain Phillips having read all the reports about how it really went down.

I saw Frozen before everyone started raving and I really enjoyed it.  If you go in with crazy expectations it's not as enjoyable, although I agree it's not up to earlier Disney standards.

I think since it was with real people you have a higher expectation of the material, while family guy, ted etc. since those were animation your expecting a level of immaturity. (just my own personal take, I can be wrong)

I watched Pi when I was in high school.  My friends and I went through a stage where we only watched movies with "chochma."  Memento, Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club, to name a few.

Haven't seen it yet, but the more hard-core sci-fi something is, the more out there it will be (or vice versa - works both ways I guess). The genre has always been about pushing the boundaries of what's currently possible (or even plausible).

Source?

This article estimates $100m
http://www.businessinsider.com/sonys-hacking-scandal-could-cost-the-company-100-million-2014-12

Surprised that's all. 4 movies were released online. 3 before they got to theaters. And that's besides all the bad PR from all the emails...
I don't believe the $100m number above includes the movies (hard to tell 100% from the article), but those losses are tricky because how do you define how much you lost in ticket sales, etc. if you don't know how much those movies were going to make? What they do is called an impairment charge, and the article above puts the estimate at $83m. The $100m is more the actual technology infrastructure damage, etc.

Saw it. I loved Bradley Cooper's acting. Probably only him. Drama and action were intense. But... even in a 2.5 hour movie, you can't fully develop a 6 year long story, so the storyline was a bit choppy, and sometimes just left stuff out.

Also, although we have freedom of speech, in today's current events it is not far fetched to assume that after viewing a video of an American explicitly killing arabs, that there won't be some dumb*** who will want to get payback. Just saying.

Actors' acting is not on par with Marvels standard. Nevertheless, an enjoyable show.

Not sure why it has such a crazy high rating on IMDb. Perhaps comic book/superhero geeks and nerds getting overly excited?

Not a bad watch. Of all the historical deviations, I think the craziest was the directors' decision to have them dress in denim!!

IAE, I found the book to be much better than the movie.

So I'm trying to find the name of a Movie that I saw ages ago. The premise was people waking up in the future and everyone is high and playing video games. Society has forgotten how to do normal things and these people that woke up (or were transported to the future) help them save the world. Something tells me that Eddie Murphy was one of the actors, but I may be mistaken. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That may be it but i think it was more kitschy. More like a 90s or late 80s futuristic thing. I guess i have to watch this first and see if it was whatni remembered. Thanks.

Really hard to squeeze Jackson in there. One great trilogy (LOTR), one bad (The Hobbit) - like really bad. Other than that he's directed very little. King Kong and Lovely Bones are the only other 2 I've seen. Not a particularly strong body of work. I personally think none of those 4 crack the top 5, maybe not even top 10.

There's an awesome website called kids-in-mind.com, I think it's Mormon, which ranks many movies for sex&nudity, violence&gore and profanity on scales of 1-10. Blood Diamond is a 5, 8, 6 respectively. We are really only sensitive to the first category and a 5 is too high for us. If you are sensitive to violence&gore, 8 is definitely too high for you. That said, I have never seen the movie.

The previews for his new movie The Revenant look super intense.

Otherwise you can torrent HD versions.  I shy away from downloading due to legality issues.

If my math is correct, that comes out to about 1.1 mb/sec. Not bad, but it's not what I get on torrents (4.5 mb+).

Hey, this isn't a first class award. No need to go all excel on this... But honestly, that's just a rough estimate, you'd need to see for yourself what download speed you get.

It's not about finding movies. You can only download what the admin posts.

Why are you looking to change from torrents? You won't have the selection you have there.

And when the user streams content as a "public performance" — namely, when it's shown to a substantial number of people outside the normal family circle and its close acquaintances — it also constitutes a copyright violation.

Outside of these cases, accessing unlicensed streamed content is generally legal.

I refuse to watch anything less than a DVD Screener. I ain't watching a CAM version of a movie; just not enjoyable for me.

How are download speeds?
Every 'scene release' is labeled with the source. The stuff that gets leaked at the end of the year is always DVD screeners. That may happen here and there throughout the year, but for the most part the high quality stuff comes out at the same time, or sometimes a little bit (think a week, not a month) before, the movie gets the full public Blu-Ray/DVD public release.

That's the source. In terms of methods of downloading, if you're comfortable with torrents, that's probably the best route. All of the leaked screeners are available via torrent already. Searching dvdscr at Torrentz (link (http://www.torrentz.com/search?q=dvdscr)), to name just a few:
Creed
In the Heart of the Sea
Joy
Steve Jobs
The Peanuts Movie
The Revenant
Concussion
Straight Outta Compton

ETA: Almost all of the streaming sources won't be the same as what you get via torrents, but it may be good enough for you.

Right.  But with this latest batch they haven't even been released in theaters yet and the screeners are everywhere.

And : http://bciptf.org/?p=1654
If it is released in another country first or someone got his hands on a final copy for the producers you can get high quality earlier. Such as the last expendables

The "bear rape scene" was a hoax started by a leak to the Drudge Report. I saw the movie. The bear was mauling him and jumping on him in the way bears attack their prey or a perceived danger to their cubs.

As a side point, the movie was needlessly drawn out.

The gov't wanted to increase home ownership, even/ especially in groups that traditionally have a hard time getting a mortgage.  So banks were encouraged ( I don't remember how) to lend to people with iffy credit.  The banks were then itchy to off-load the risk of those loans.
I don't remember any details; I read about the whole thing years ago. It seems that The Big Short looks at the situations from the banking angle.

They did a decent job with the housing side of it through the trips Carrell's character's crew took to Miami. But to your point, they didn't necessarily focus on the housing policy aspect of it, just the bare fact that people were getting loans they had no reasonable basis to get approved for.

The part that was more likely confusing to some people was the MBS/CDO's which were the primary instrument of transferring the housing collapse into the financial sector, and the CDS's, which were the primary instrument of how all the characters in the movie made a killing on the collapse.

The depiction of the credit agencies role in the crisis was done decently as well.

True the story is more about them. But I got really disturbed from seeing how the collapse happened.
There are quite a few good documentaries on the 2008 crash, this movie is just typical Hollywood portraying Wall Street, you can smell the hate throughout the movie.

I still enjoyed it though.

Concussion was truly phenomenal acting by WS.

Room, as you said, was good. The acting from both mom and child were great but overall the film just didn't really come across as that great.

Also Jumanji was FABULOUS!! Loved every second of it!! Kevin Hart + Dwayne Johnson = dynamite!! So very fun!

I think the last time I felt like this was also after a Hugh Jackman film. It was Les Miserable. Funny thing is I went to see that because I love Ann Hathaway. I was wildly impressed by Hugh Jackman’s performance which made me go see this. All in all, thank you Princess Diaries

Just watched. Decidedly my favorite movie off all time.

I'm gonna let that slide until you watch some legit GOAT contenders. It's not a movie, but you should absolutely watch Band of Brothers. IMO, nothing else really compares in the war category. As far as movies, you specifically want WWII, or any era of war drama?

Tons.
As others mentioned, Saving Private Ryan is a must. By far the best war movie out there.
Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are both good Vietnam movies.
Movies from the most recent Iraq/Afghanistan war you might want to check out are The Hurt Locker and American Sniper (Zero Dark Thirty is good but more of a thriller than a war movie). I would avoid Apocalypse Now for the time being but you should probably check that out at some point (it's really long and not really your typical war movie but definitely worth watching IMHO).

+1. Barely a laugh through the whole film. There was no way they could have matched the first one, especially with his character being so well known. They tried to mix in some "Who is America" type scenes which just does not go with the Borat brand. Many of the characters were clearly in on it. The Giuliani scene is hard to watch, very damaging (even viewed in the best light).

I think you guys are forgetting how political the first one was - or maybe you were just a lot less emotionally invested in politics back then. Personally I think Borat 2 wasn't as good, simply because the bits were either retreads of stuff from the first one (or other SBC content like Who is America) or they were just duds. Who is America also had a lot of duds - though I think the best few scenes from the series were among SBC best work.
