Title: Shipping your luggage
Post by: sky121 on May 03, 2013, 11:27:14 AM
I'm headed to Europe in the summer and don't want to schlep my luggage that I need for my final destination in Israel.

What's the most cost effective way to send my luggage?

Does anyone have any experience shipping their luggage?

A little off topic what about asking someone to bring it for you?

Not exactly off topic. ;)

That is an option though I haven't yet found anyone going in my city that I can ask.
Hoping I will, but just in case...

Just two 50Lb suitcases. And I could probably send it pretty early. Any idea on costs?

I emptied the content of a suitcase into a large box and a ddf member helped me with his FedEx account.

From NY to LA. Total weight was 55 Lbs. Was $48 including pickup.

usps priced about $10 more, but would involve a shlep to the post office, plus FedEx is much more reliable.

Not sure if you can just stick a label on a suitcase and mail it!

You would pay extra for the unusual dimensions.

Dont know if it works , but maybe u can buy a refundable ticket, check in your luggage and don't fly , your stuff should arrive in israel have someone flying that day to walk it out ,
And I should get all the money back for the ticket
Does this work ?

For security reasons, a plane will not fly with luggage if the owner is not on the plane.
This has been in effect for many years (way before 9/11)

If you're bombing the plane, your going down with it.

-1. I've had a plane leave without me but with my luggage on board.

US domestic

Good luck doing that for a flight to Israel. I've been on plenty flights where we had to wait for luggage to be offloaded

Title: Shipping your luggage without paying overweight fees
Post by: EMES on May 08, 2013, 01:28:10 PM
BagsVIP has partnered with American Airlines (starting August 6th), United, Delta, US Airways, JetBlue, Southwest, Alaska Airlines, AirTran and Virgin Atlantic. The way it works is, instead of checking in your bags with your flight, youíll check them in with a BagsVIP representative at the airport. You still pay your checked bag fees, but once you arrive at your destination youíll get to skip the baggage claim because your luggage will be delivered directly to your hotel, or wherever you chose. Your bags will arrive within 2 hours if your pickup spot is within 40 miles of the airport. If itís farther than that, it might take as long as 6 hours and will cost you an additional $1 per mile. Deliveries canít be made to more than 100 miles away.
A major bonus is that thereís no extra charge for overweight or oversized bags, though Iím sure theyíd draw a line if you tried to ship something enormous. Hereís the breakdown: 1 bag: $29.95 2 bag: $39.95 3-10 bags: $49.95

Has anyone used this? Looks like it will work on Hidden City tickets as well. (Although they ask for your confirmation #...but it looks like it works.)

BTW, you would still neeed to pay airline fee if bags are overweight.
