Title: Used Cars For Sale Master Thread
Post by: Super Speed on August 12, 2013, 09:19:25 AM
I searched and searched and haven't yet found a thread that discusses used card, so I figured I'll start my own. I'm looking to buy a used car and I'm very new at this whole thing. I was offered a '02 Camry with 75K miles on it for $7200 is that considered reasonable? Or a '06 Camry with 75K miles on it with leather and sunroof for $9200.

You can use KBB.com to find out what a car should be worth.

If you have the heart for it, you can try using craigslist to find a car.

No.

It works better if you have an idea of what kind of car you are looking for, just searching the posts can be very tedious. Knowing or knowing someone who can check the car for you is a must as well (a carfax should also be looked at). After that, it is just haggling and getting the paperwork. Stay away from cars with a bad carfax, or owners who won't show you paperwork.

I guess but I think it's easier to go to Lakewood Auto Sales. He sells 75% of used cars here, which means he's not a rip off and sells decent cars.

If he ripped people off he wouldn't be so successful. Pretty simple, I think.

I got an amazing deal on Craigslist last summer. I got a 2012 Sonata in perfect condition - on the road 3 months with 6,500 miles and I got it for $15,500 (bargained it down from $18,000). The car was checked by Hyundai and given a perfect bill of health and I'm at 25K now with no problem B"H.
Craigslist is hit or miss but if you do your due diligence you can find a good deal.

Def do Carfax over AutoCheck. Just got a used car and got both. Carfax had way more info and history.

Ime it's worth giving in in some areas, especially when purchasing a used car, in order to do business with them, Avi is probably the most honest used car salesmen around!! I've had many first hand experiences in which I saw his honesty.

Wow, grab a beer, take a nap, get a massage, something! You need to relax.
And yes, my google is broken.
I mean, I googled it and got several results and I wanted to verify from someone with first-hand info what the correct number is for the Lakewood Auto Sales that has been discussed here in this thread.
So thanks a million for all your help, and get some sleep!

Car 1 - yes but no other car involved... No full coverage, junked car...
Car 2 BH no
Car 3 BH no
I was student most of the time btw. I'm sure there is some level of risk, but at the time my options were to pay ins as a young driver in NY/free car ins. cause that's how it is when you take a car from home...
Not sure if border would disclose info to ins company, shouldn't there be some sort of privacy law?
Now if someone already was in accident, I'd think that driving the car after that would be too risky...
Anyone else??

You need to import the car first. And NO you don't need to go to the border you can go to customs in Newark at the port.

I believe you need to get a letter from the dealer in Canada (ie Hyundai dealership for a Hyundai) saying that it complies with US safety standards.

Yup, I think you need a letter that there aren't any outstanding recalls. Also if the car is under someone else's name you need to get a "gift" letter from that person signed and notorized. Plus there are a couple of other things too, which I don't remember off hand.

Drive car with Canadian plates in NY vs. doing the switcheroo.
Although it's done very often it really isn't a good idea to drive here long term with Canadian plates, for insurance reasons. Besides, car insurance in Canada is through the roof even for a good driver with absolutely nothing negative on his record.
Also, might have trouble selling a car in the US that has a kilometer based interface.

most cars have Mph also just in smaller letters.  Also, I'm pretty sure there's a way to put in a new label in on the display show mph in larger letters and kph in smaller letters

I can tell you from personal experience that Canadian insurance is much more expensive than in the states. I doubt your thinking you remember is more accurate.

Was trying to compare apples to apples, so this would be irrelevant. However, now that you brought it up, others with same issue should take that into account, and thus the pros for keeping Canadian car Canadian would certainly out way the cons...

I have a friend that wants to sell his car, the problem is, he got it used from a guy that fixed it up after it was totaled. The car's been working perfectly but the title says that it was salvaged. Would that cause people not to buy it? Would a dealer buy it back?

salvage titles are hard to get rid of. Most people will not take it.  May be issues getting it insured as well.

Runs great, new breaks just put in.
Has valid inspection good through May 2016.

With only 118K - this should last you for a long time as a second car.

Car is in Lakewood.

PM me if interested.
AC works but only on Med/High, and occasionally shuts off and you need to repress the button to resume cooling.
Has some right fender/front bumper damage from a fender bender a few years ago.

2003 Buick Rendezvous CXL AWD. A little less than 140,000 miles. KBB Value: Excellent $4,293/Very Good $4,017/Good $3,905. Will gladly take $3600 o/b/o for quick sale. I already got a new van, and am ready to sell. I am the second owner, I bought it from a friend of mine about 4 years ago. The first owner had it maintained by the dealer; I haven't, but have taken care of every known issue with the car and maintained it for as long as I have owned it with a local mechanic. Some minor dents and scratches; clean interior; feels like new in many ways. This is a loaded car; and everything works well. I think I still have the new car sticker somewhere, and the new price was about $39,000 if I remember correctly. The intake manifold goes on all of these cars, and about 1.5 years ago I replaced the engine with a newer engine with about 55,000 miles on it. So now about 140,000 on the car with 60,000 on the newer engine. Four wheel drive is great in the winter. The car is in Lakewood.

Medium Grey Exterior with Light Grey Interior. 3.4 Liter V6 Engine. 4 Speed Automatic Transmission. Reverse Sensors. Rear Defroster & Windshield Wiper. 4 Wheel Anti Lock Brakes. 4 Wheel Drive. Trip Computer. Rear Privacy (Dark Tinted) Glass. Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror. Keyless Entry with Dual Driver Seat Position Memory. Electronic Climate Control (Air Conditioning & Heat). Power Windows w/Driver Auto-Down. Power Door Locks. Power Exterior Mirrors. Cruise Control. Alloy Wheels. 2 Keys and 2 Remotes. Automatic Headlights. Fog Lights. Power Steering. On-Star. Dual Front Air Bags. Roof Rails. AM/FM Stereo Sound System with Both Cassette and CD. Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel with Audio Controls. Dual Power Adjustable Heated Front Seats. Leather Seats. Second Row Seats Fold Down and are Removable. Third Row Seats Fold Down. (Seat Belts for Seven 2/3/2) but could easily seat 8. NJ Inspection Good thru March 2016. Clean title.

If interested please PM.

2005 Ford Focus ZX4 SE. Runs great B"H. 139,000 miles. No issues at all. Heat, AC works beautifully. Installed an aftermarket stereo. Pioneer DEH-x6700BT. So has Bluetooth, USB, iPod, auxiliary input, plus MP3 CD. Very clear music and telephone calls using the stereo's Mic. Had a salvage title due to a hail storm. Still has small dents due to it. Not noticeable at most angles (to me at least). Has a regular clean title now. I replaced windshield then. I'm attaching a few pictures so you can see for yourself. Just changed spark plugs for even better mileage. Just made an oil change. And changed the headlights. Very bright.

I'm not sure I want to sell yet. Only selling because my wife needs a taller vehicle. $4,800 obo. It's worth $6,500 according to KBB, but charging less due to the fact that the tiny dents might bother some people. In my experience, it's a very reliable car, never had to do anything besides regular maintenance. People have hit 200k+ easily. Read on it.

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading. Far from the standard fare for sale here, but can't heard to publicize it.

I have a 2010 Jaguar XF-R with ~50k miles.  Under warranty through July of 2016 as a Jaguar Certified Pre-Owned vehicle.  FULLY loaded as the R model doesn't have any options you can add.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Is not an issue. Meaning, you can't judge by American, European, Japanese etc these days. You got be specific. Certain American cars are known for having extremely long lifespans such as the Ford Focus. Easily 200k+.

Based on my experiences, this is my criteria, and more importantly to this convo, my opinion.

What must i be specific about? I dont want a chevy venture with 137,000 miles for more then $100-150 dollars, seems clear to me :D.

anyone know the process of selling a car privately? can i just sign the title and hand over the keys or do i need to go through a convoluted process?

If it belongs to you, and doesn't have a lien on it,  yes. Just remember about your insurance, plates and registration.

Once you get the money just fill out the back of the title (make sure you fill it out correctly because if you make a mistake and and wanna cross it out you might need to get a new title) and hand it over to the buyer, take off your plates and registration,
Once the buyer gets his own plates regeneration and insurance he can drive off.

No. You have 14 days from registration to inspect it.

What's not working? They require things that affect safety or emissions control, generally speaking. (IIRC, a cracked windshield can't cause you to fail an inspection anymore, however, you can get ticketing by an officer if he determines that its unsafe to drive as is.)

Nothing in particular. I don't think its an emissions issue though. But if the light is on will they still fail the car?

-1 I've have a car pass when the check engine light was on for a few days, off for a few days... If it's in NJ, the light is off when you go for inspection, and it's not emissions related, you have a decent shot.

For sale:
2006 Red Ford Econoline cargo van, model 150, V8 engine 4.6 liter, 114k miles
Price: $2175
Van is in perfect condition, body in great condition. It was wrapped in a sticker with a business ad, which prevented it from getting scratched or nicked.
It has built in shelving for storage of small supplies.
Engine, steering, tires, brakes, transmission, as well as ac/heat & power windows are in great shape.
Runs smoothly and has no problems, extremely smooth drive. The interior is a bit ripped as it was previously used to do construction, so materials were taken in and out of the van which ripped the inside fabric, but for someone who plans on using it for deliveries or for construction or to transport stuff (e.g. from Brooklyn to Lakewood etc.), it's perfect.
Overall it's a great running van and can hopefully last another 100k or more.
So, why am I selling it for only $2175 or less? Because I am not in the construction business anymore, so I no longer need it.
If you (or someone you know) are interested, please PM (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=21342) or email me (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=1635821) to schedule a test drive and/or take it to a mechanic to have it checked out.
If you have any questions (or if you want the VIN, to check the history), or want to see pictures, feel free to PM or email me.                                                                                   KODUS:IZ

Selling 2005 Nissan Altima 157k miles
Overall very good condition, very well maintained, newer tires and brakes.
Check engine light is on due to head gasket which would cost about $1200 to fix (may not have to do it for a while).
Needs new inspection sticker (was driving with an expired one for over a year).
Asking $1500 and would like close to that price, as once this car is fixed it will be excellent.

I have a car I that I'm looking to sell but having a hard time figuring out the value I can get for it.
It's a 2006 chevy impala, 136K miles, power steering needs repairs (I believe new pump and rack and pinion), has dents /scratches, body paint is fading in certain areas, tires are basically worn out. Lately the car shakes when driving it (probably related to the steering issue).
I'm thinking of asking $1,100.

Is the price too low? I posted on craigslist and many people are asking me about it so I'm thinking maybe I can get more for it...

Also depends what type of car. Minivans are not usually being rented by abusive teenagers or otherwise people 'who drive hard'. Minivans are generally rented by people with a decent size family, that care about driving carefully, and don't want to put the other occupants (ie his family) at risk by driving like a meshuganah.

Camry, so it's not a fun car per se but also isn't necessarily a family vehicle

You can abuse a car without driving like a meshugena

Alot of abuse is done by the car rental employees so it doesn't matter what size vehicle

For Lakewood. I had a good experience at MoMo car sales down RT 88 adjacent to Ventus. 09 Camry 100k miles one Owner car was in low $6k. Mohammed was very pleasant and easy to negotiate with. Did Ventus for a prepurchase check.
Check his website for inventory.
Great source for mid-priced cars with good value which the frum dealerships don't seem to wanna carry.

Looking into used minivans. Anyone know if CPO is worthwhile? At first I thought it was a no-brainer (assuming cost is not much more), since buying regular used likely means little to no warranty - Honda, Nissan and Toyota are only 5yr/60k, while Kia's is non-transferable. In contrast, the CPO programs seem to give you 7-10yr/100k miles. Is this worth much, considering it's specifically the powertrain warranty?

FS: 2009 Elantra SE. In Lakewood.  Purchased new with "cash for clunkers" program almost 9 years ago. Very well maintained: all oil changes regularly at Lester Glenn Hyundai in Toms River, & maintained by Ventus. Very clean interior, no bad old car smell. Had 3 car seats in the back most of the time, some bottles seem to have spilled so not perfect but still excellent. Regular yeshivisha scratches and dents from local parking lots. Low miles (just under 45,000) from mostly being for my wife to get to work and take kids to babysitter. I got a new car and don't want to keep an extra car around, but על פי טבע it shouldn't need anything for a long time. Just replaced the timing belt and water pump ($600 job). Easy to drive, really drives like new and feels weird to get rid of but I would rather have the cash at this point. $6750.

Seems like a good deal but I would do some research into how long the Venza engines last. Definitely get a PPI too by someone you trust, especially since it was in an accident.

Selling an 05 suburban with 240k miles for 3k
240k is a nice amount.
And 3k is asking for a lot being that it's 14 years old.
That means the engine, transmission, tires, rotors, brakes, suspension might need some tune ups, whether the tie rods, leaf springs, list goes on.
And not to mention the ac system, hoping it's running fine.
Not to mention the spark plugs and wires, and flushing all the fluids on a 14 year old car.
 Now if you wrote....
Selling an 05 suburban with 240k miles for 3k, well maintained, serviced it at the Correct intervals as recommended in the manual. Good tires brakes and transmission ,engine.

Then I would say for 3k there's "something" to talk about or negotiate...

   Good luck!

not sure if this is the right place, but I'm looking to buy a used car, and  looking through craigslist there are a lot of cars that seem very legit but are significantly  underpriced, is there a way of knowing when its too good to be true and when its just a guy looking to sell his car?
obviously, I'd only pay in person once I've seen the car (probably with a friend who knows about cars), but was what other things should I look out for, assuming it all checks out?

What's an example URL of a listing that looks underpriced.

Before they implemented the 5$ post thingy, the listings that looked like they were screenshots of pictures all looked fishy to me.

Yes those were the type of listings i saw. Although it seems they upped the picture quality and no duplicates. Always pictures on grass or in front of fancy houses. I don't know what their scam is but there's 0% chance that's a real listing based on that price.

It can't hurt as long as no money whatsoever is spent. Although I guess don't even call up with your main number/email. They might only be going after just basic contact info of people.

You'll likely never see the car. They're probably scammers looking for people who will send them money to order the car. Not too long ago I tried replying to one of these ads to see what would happen (fake name, address, and throwaway email). Here are the emails that we traded, and screenshots of the very-ligit looking email that I got from 'Ebay'.

Yehudaa: Hi. I'm very interested in your Rav4. Please send me more info, and please let me know when I can come test drive the car. Thanks!

Patricia Davis: Hi there, thank you for your interest in buying my SUV. My 2013 Toyota Rav4 LE 4WD has 82,360 Kms, with a 2.5L I4 cylinders engine, automatic transmission. It is in perfect condition, no need for additional repairs,no scratches, dings or rust. The vehicle looks great. It runs like new and all services are up to date. Also, I need to mention that it was never involved in any accidents. The value is CAD $3,500. It belonged to my husband but he passed away(had a heart attack) so I decided to sell it because to be honest, it's only gathering dust in my garage.I just moved with my daughter in Saskatoon SK so I took the vehicle with me and gave it to eBay to handle the deal. The vehicle is at the shipping company, sealed and ready for delivery. It's quite hard for me to sell it in person because I'm 61 yo and age gets you eventually. But with eBay you'll get 5 days for inspection and if you're interested in purchasing it, send me your full name, shipping address and phone # so I can have them to send you an invoice, meaning more details about how they work. Also you are not obligated  to buy it, no pressure...I've attached more pictures!

Yehudaa: Hi Patricia. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband! Let's go ahead with this deal. My full legal name is (fake name). Shipping address is (fake address). Please let me know to pay for it and when it will be delivered. Thanks!

Patricia Davis: Hello, I apologize for my delayed response but I am very busy with my work,I have received your complete delivery details and right now I will forward the information to eBay. They will send you the invoice shortly and you will receive it by email with all the instructions and details. Please get back after you receive the invoice from them so we can complete our deal. Thank you!

Patricia Davis: I just got an email from eBay saying that they have sent you the invoice with all details you need in order to complete this deal. Please check your messages and let me know if you got it. Also,on the payment notification you will find their phone number where you can call and get more info from their operators. I will wait for your reply.

Buy the carfax yourself. Ask him for the VIN and make sure the VIN that you get a carfax for matches the one on the car when you go test drive it.

Yehuda Schechter, Auto discounters LAKEWOOD

Honest guy, nice selection, good prices (will match anyone else) and get you anything he doesnít have.

Actually just bought from him (again).

As far as price, think would be around 18-20k (give or take based on years) for such low mileage

Expect to pay more as it's Honda and 2017, as well only 16k miles.

If you find for 16k as @moko said, it will more probably have "hidden fee/bulshit dealer fee" to go above 18k..

just came across this, sorry if Iím late.
A car that went true a real accident is NOT as safe as before and in case of another accident CĒV the frame wonít hold up as well to protect the passengers inside.
So you can usually get a good deal on such a vehicle but itís at a safety cost

that's assuming there is frame damage. A minor fender bender is unlikely to have frame damage.

that's assuming there is frame damage. A minor fender bender is unlikely to have frame damage.
Correct, most vehicles that have frame damage you can tell, it's almost impossible to put back a vehicle frame like it was before any damage.
if there is frame damage in the front of the vehicle just by opening the hood or measuring the gaps from the hood to the panel's you could see if it's off.
and the same with the trunk if it's a car remove the spare tire and look inside if you see any welding or misaligned panels.
 Hard to hide.

just came across this, sorry if Iím late.
A car that went true a real accident is NOT as safe as before and in case of another accident CĒV the frame wonít hold up as well to protect the passengers inside.
So you can usually get a good deal on such a vehicle but itís at a safety cost
funny story, I actually ended up tracking down the original owner to clarify what happened, and ended up buying the car.

You dont want a car that was used without regard for the car, such as from a rental company.
When you buy a used car from a dealer you should try to find out who/what the previous owner was.

Even if I get it checked out by a good mechanic? I'm trusting him to find a hidden problem no matter where the car is from.

With a rental car you know it was maintained and serviced regularly, which is a pro compared to many used cars.

Used them for multiple cars before purchasing and leased with them in the past. Family business and just good ehrlich people.
Just a little family history:
One of the owners are the lederers from Queens. The father, who worked in the shop was on Hatzolah for many years. In 2001 was one of the many responders at ground zero. Sadly a few years ago was niftar due to issues that were direct cause from that dreadful day. Since then the family took over the business and just do such a good job.

Also if you have low mileage it's very rare to have an issue with such a new van

$2000 for the warranty
mileage is 45000
how do I know if they will be around in 2 years?

so you think its not worth it to get extended warranty?

I know this is an old post but for anyone else..... You're likely spending roughly 20-22k on your Sienna with approx 45k on it. I don't see how it makes sense to spend roughly 10% cost of a vehicle (a very reliable vehicle indeed) on a warranty. But hey, some people buy warranties on their countertop microwave as well  ;)
I asked a top mechanic (in Lakewood) about these warranties which have become popular. He thought it is ridiculous but he said "I don't know what to say, today people spend money without even thinking". He thought it unnecessary on such a purchase. I was also referring to a 2017 Sienna with 30-50k on it.

2007 Toyota Sienna 113K
Excellent mechanical condition rides very good (new tires, replaced shocks, rotors, control arm L, R&P when I bought it 12 months ago)

Even If I'm getting it for free? sounds like to much work, ain't worth it. I wish there was a way to do it locally.
So what did you end up doing? Kept it canadian or changed it to NY plates?

Curios what the process is 7 years later.

And what the fees are to transfer a vehicle?

Can anyone who has bought a new or used car recently and registered it in NJ confirm how long it took to get license plates?

I bought a used car on Nov 15 from a dealership in NY. They supposedly submitted the paperwork to the NJ MVC and I was supposed to get my plates within 45 days (i.e., end of Dec). Meanwhile, my temporary interstate license plate expired 3 weeks ago. I contacted the NJ MVC and they said that they need to know which MVC the paperwork was submitted to in order to track status. I can't get the dealership to give me an answer about which MVC they submitted it to (I suspect they outsource this to a third-party company). Anything else I can try?

I have a set of license plates from a lease that I just gave back that I haven't returned to the MVC yet. Am I better off putting those plates on my new car even though it doesn't match the registered vehicle? Or am I better off driving around with an expired temporary license plate? I figure if I got a ticket for having expired temp license plates I can argue that it was delayed due to COVID. But if I have the wrong plates there isn't much of an argument I can make.

I've seen a good bit of expired temporary plates on cars. I would think you would have a better argument with them than with plates from a different car.

Driving with temp plates probably better.

I got my used car October 23 from a NY dealership, NJ plates came in on December 21.

Also a friend of mine had his plates registered to him but never shipped because the mvc dealing with it had a covid case and closed down for 2 weeks.

Never do this!
Expired temp plates should not be an issue. You can see many on the street with expiration in March/April 2020

You sound very biased. I know many people driving around with expired temps for months without issue. Where have you seen reports of people getting ticketed and their cars impounded?

ETA: In Lakewood you can easily get an appointment, there are almost always appointments available a few weeks out.

I didn't see any reports in the news, I know the stories gone bad because I have people calling me up to help them after they got pulled over and need Registration ASAP. Just because people drive around with expired temps without an issue that doesn't mean they are clear from getting pulled over, people do many things wrong when driving and get away with it... All is flowery until they get busted :-\
