Title: IHG
Post by: dandu16 on November 01, 2013, 10:14:57 AM
This morning as I was surfing the IHG website, hotel prices were coming for nothing. Literarily, $30! for the best suites in both in Panama City and in Tel aviv. Regular rooms were going for 10-20 USD.

I couldn't get my act together quick enough to book the rooms, because I was too busy looking for flights for an hour. After about an hour looking all over the world and trying to decide what to do for Thanksgiving, the price changed.

Anyone else ever experience this? Maybe it was maintenance?

Possible points break glitch?

(By the way, OP, when you see prices like that, you book now and ask questions later.)

It takes a first time to learn that you snooze you loose.

Hopefully he'll know better for the future

I'm staying at a ihg hotel iyh. Its on a wedding rate. Is there any cc to apply for with which I could get status and get an upgrade?
I think the chase ihg gets you platinum status. Would they give me an upgrade with the status even though I'm paying/staying on a wedding rate?

Sure, but status doesn't guarantee an update.

I've stayed at many ihg hotels with you platinum and only once did I get anything extra from them....  It was a bag of potato chips and a bottle of purified water.  So good luck on getting an upgrade even your there yourself.

Checked into an IHG today with Plat status and they told me no upgrades available. I called from my room and tried to book a suite and they said there are a few available still. So, is not every suite always avail for upgrade? Are they still holding out hope of selling the suites but had I checked in later, they would have given me one?

Once I've been told that if you hold RA statues then upgrade for sure. But plat depends on the hotel.

Aha. I thought Plat was the highest status. Guess not.

I ended up calling 1800 number and they called the hotel manager directly. Got back on the phone with me and told me that each hotel can pick what rooms they offer for upgrades. This hotel only offers the corner suite as an upgrade and since it was already sold - even though there are other suites vacant - they won't upgrade me. Oh well.

There is currently a 100% bonus for IHG purchases. The most you can buy is 60k for $690 and you would get 120k points. Cheaper than the cancel hotel method. Promo will be running for one week till September 22nd.

Why not just make a dummy booking? It should say everything you need to know before you confirm. And it's likely cancelable. Either way I don't know if IHG charges resort fees on award bookings but it should be easy to find out with a quick google search. Or call them

I just saw that IHG hotel rewards gave me points for using my visa cc at woodmere lanes in the 5 towns.  Apparently backstage (the bar there) is part of the dining club and I must have used a cc I once set up for the dining club to pay for bowling.  Good to know for those that have IHG points since there arent too many kosher restaurants participating in dining clubs.  Might be a good way to extend points expiration (not sure what ihg's policy is).

I apologize if this has been discussed. I  use spg  and Barclay's.  I see some bigger purchases coming and thinking about getting another card.  Thinking another spg but wonder the purchase power  of ihg points in getting free nights and whether it's bettert to use that instead.  Or another sapphire preferrerd.  I like spg for use in FL, but don't know which is best.  Thanks.

Cant give you an answer as it depends on your preferences but 80k ihg is basicly 2 nights at any of their hotels. Plus you get the anniversary night which is good for any ihg hotel.
Personally I would take the sapphire over this card though.
Eta: Are you looking for the best sign up bonus or general use. If the later then I definitly wouldn't go with ihg.

Did you ask?

I've found IHG to be the stingiest with upgrades. And that's with Plat status.

3 different hotels also lied to me about the availability of any upgraded rooms.
Yes, we asked to be upgraded when we checked in. I assume they had a few suites available and didnt have any possibility of renting them all out that late at night.

In regards to the IHG accelerate promo.
I have the 5k after one stay, 5k when book stay with C&P, and 2.3k after paying with IHG CC. If I complete all 3, I get extra 27k points.
Do I need to stay 2 nights, or if I book one night with C&P that will suffice for the first condition as well ?
The T&C are very vague if it has to be separate or not.

Very different hotels. One is more of a business hotel downtown, the other is more of a boutique hotel near the beach. If you're going for pleasure and prefer to be in miami beach id go w Z Ocean, all else being equal.

I stayed at the Z Ocean.

Service is excellent I mean, really great (but not upper class). They gave me the standard "Platinum gift" (nuts and a water bottle :D) and then about 1-2 hours after check in they brought to me a wine with a nice personalized welcome card... Nice touch.

I've left there by mistake an expensive dress (don't ask how/why it came with me to MIA) they shipped it to me and it was a pleasure dealing with them working out the details.

Rooms are very nice (I got a suite) but no nice (ocean) views.

In summary. It's a nice hotel with good service but not upper class.

Prices change at 1k (.000675 cpp), 11k (.000625 cpp), and 26k (.000575 cpp, IHG's cheapest they go).  That's $299 for 52k points up to $690 for 120k points.

Note that IHG points require activity every 12 months, but you can just redeem for a hotel award and cancel it to extend the expiration for another 12 months.

Does anyone have or remember the T&C for the "5,000 bonus for 1 weekend stay" that is often received around ones birthday?

I'm pretty sure it was one night and they're claiming it was for 2 night.

Doubt it. There are many reasons why it wouldnt work from the list below.

“Non-Qualifying Room Rates” or “Non-Qualifying Stay” include the following: any stay at a Kimpton Hotel, net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate, rates booked through third party web sites, complimentary hotel Stays and any other rates not defined as a Qualifying Room Rate at IHG’s sole discretion."

I'm wondering if complimentary night is also referring to a BRG or only a free night certificate.

It doesn't get disqualified for any of these reasons? I'm not sure exactly how u did ur BRG, but I could see many reasons who it shouldnt count. Maybe these?

-certain package rates
-friends and family rate
-special discounted contract rates
-rates booked through third party websites
-complimentary hotel Stays

I don't see a manager approving it. If it will go through on auto, you never know...

So if I can get the 5,000 for the additional card and the 80,000 and 15,000 is worth approximately $80, it seems clearly worth getting the 80,000 and givingup the $50 credit. Do you all agree. (Just want to be sure I got this right). Also, to keep the card for $49 a year with a free night, is that worth it as well? Thanks for the quick answers.

1) sell it.
2) Although in general it is about brands there are times when a Intercontinental can be worse then a holiday inn.

To answer your question though I would say Crowne Plaza and then either Indigo or the Even Brand(if thats something you would like)

candlewood is usually garbage, staybridge is very nice but its more of place for families with focus on living quarters and dining/leisure. crowne plazas are usually bigger with conference rooms and nice lobbies etc..

According to Frequent Miler, there are some hotels that are "selling" points for .506 cents each (C+P trick), a little bit lower than the usual 0.57-0.6

http://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/2017/03/13/buy-ihg-points-0-506-cents/?utm_source=feedblitz&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Frequent%20Miler%20%28Instant%29

With 0.57 - a 60,000/night hotel would be $342. At 0.506, it would be $303.60, a savings of $38.40. Not bad!

Just some entertainment for you guys:

I had 2 separate reservations booked for Bora Bora, one for 4 nights and another one for 2. It was done that way based on availability at the times of reservation. I always planned on combining them and tonight was the night I decided to do it. I also wanted to shave a night at the end and spend the last night in Tahiti so that I can have more time outside of the airport, and to see another area for a day would have been nice.

This is where the fun starts. Not only did the guy shave off one night, he shaved off 2!!! Completely cancelled my second reservation. That would be fine if he booked me a night to replace the first night that he cancelled without my authorization. He tried but it wasn't added back to inventory as a reward night. Now hes trying to contact the front desk of the hotel to have them add back to inventory (he doesn't know that I know this is what happened but it's so obvious based on how long I've been on hold and by the fact that it's been 20 minutes since I got the cancellation email).

What should I ask for in return for my "patience"?  :)

1)a post catches my attention,

4) success.

As opposed to entering a sweepstakes whose sole purpose is winning something.
1) enter a sweepstakes,

3) failure.

$610? I'm seeing $690 for 120k with the 100%. 610 makes it roughly 50 cents per, a pretty good deal. Though I tend to not buy IHG points unless I have a specific redemption in mind with availability. To each their own though

Is there anything I can do?

In the same boat.  I called the hotel (before IHG's email) and they said the points stay was in their system and would be honored.

Now I will call back to see if that's still the case, and if it's still noted as paid in full.  If not, I'll cancel.

Yes, I have probably gotten at least 3X ROI after 6 months of membership so far.  Usually the BOGO certificate is more than enough to put you in positive territory.

Am I really late to this and just noticed this now or is it very new? - the IHG website is a total disaster now. The biggest downside (for many of us) is that if you search for an award and it's not available on that date, you can no longer expand the calendar to see available dates.

What are some good benefits of the ambassador program?

IHG launched a new status you can buy for $200 or 40k points (bad value for points):

https://www.ihg.com/intercontinental/hotels/gb/en/ambassador/join?offerId

TL:DR- Free weekend night (on 2nd night of reservation - looks like 1 per year), guaranteed 1 tier upgrade, and extra snack/drink credit.

Anyone have more details on it? Could be a good deal if the weekend night is per stay, as opposed to annually.

IHG Elite Status
Extra benefits only apply at IHG hotels.
