Smokey Joe's, ETC, NoBo

Actually kind of surprised that Smokey Joes would be in the same sentence as ETC and NoBo.

Smokey joes is more casual, yes. Etc is fancier.  They do both happen to be good restaurants. Depending on how much you the OP wants to spend I was giving options,

Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but between the ambiance, the quality of the food, and the service, and the competing establishments, you'd be amiss going there.

15 years ago was a different story.

There is a reason it's called Noahs Ark Original Deli

Therefore?

I'm saying I don't often go out to eat deli meat; regardless of the name of the proprietor.

And even if I would, I don't like NA.

Smokey joes
Ordered the boneless beef rib plate
Been hearing mixed reviews about the place. Please post your thoughts here or in the NJ food thread.
Will do. Just ordered
Mini TR from Smokey Joes
We were 4 people. Myself, wife and in laws.
Great service! Food was out in 10 mins.
We just ordered main dishes.
I ordered the boneless beef rib plate (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/04/df2f004ec5fd1d252b15869f5986bbb3.jpg)Lots of flavor. Very well spiced. Very soft.

My wife ordered the sizzling fajita. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/04/7891c3de2cbc452acac7a4a7dfa24b8f.jpg)It came out smoking hot. Was a decent steak. Nothing special.

My shvigger got the rib plate (with bones)
(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/04/7f0ff176d93ba56f5005dc5963d9e928.jpg)Very similar to mine. Very flavorful and soft.

My Shver had the grilled rib eye steak
(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/04/1918c75bdfabb24a99daf44b298f1ed6.jpg)Regular steak. Didn't really have much taste/ seasoning.

Bill was $145
There wasn't much of a presentation of the food. But I did enjoy it.
Definitely recommendable.

This place seems to be pretty hit or miss. A couple times I was there it was not good at all and a couple times it was pretty decent. Wish there was a Great authentic kosher barbecue place in the New York City area. Authentic barbecue food has so much potential.

Whatever you do, don't get the PAC 10 DOG. Waitress will probably tell you that it's their best, but it's pretty standard.

Chickies is great but very limited seating. Mostly a take-out place. Schnitzel Plus is a worse version of chickies but have lots of seating. There's also Gotham Burger (quick service unlike NYC location).

Had an incredible dinner last week at ETC. We were a party of 4 and opted for the 7 course meal which came out to approx $120 PP after tax and gratuity. Forgot to take pics and don't remember the exact details, but here goes:

1'st course: - Might be confusing this, but IIRC breaded chili pepper with some kind of mock cheese on top - 6/10
2'nd course: Sweetbreads with roasted pineapple - 10/10
3'rd course: Gnocchi - 8/10
4'th course: Hanger steak - 10/10
5'th course: Chuck - 7/10
6'th course: ETC steak (Butchers cut) - 10/10
7'th course: Zeppole with peanut butter and chocolate - 9/10

No. The 5 and 7 course you can order on the spot. They offer a 13 (IINM) course meal that needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance.

There are two places in Teaneck which I like, but not sure if they are suitable enough for a
business lunch:

Sababa Grill -  They are on 456 Cedar Ln. It's a small place, but rarely do I see it busy.
Yemenite Soup there is delicious.

Sammy's New York Bagels & Pizzeria - Lots of seating, but place can be busy at times.
I particularly like their Pizza Al Italiana pies.

There's a Marriott in Teaneck. About a 5-10 minute drive from shuls/restaurants. There's also a Hyatt Place in Paramus (about a 15-20 minute drive without traffic).

Activity-wise, not much in Teaneck proper other than a small movie theater. Nearby to Teaneck, is larger movie theaters, malls (except Sunday), a bowling alley, ice rink, and mini-golf. You're also a 30-45 min bus ride from NYC (as long as you don't plan to leave between 7am-9am).

Has anyone been to the humble toast?

Food is pretty good... The owner is generally present and takes a lot of pride in his food.  Menu is differentiated but somewhat pricey. I donít believe they take reservations... can get crowded during peak times.  Donít take out... food is better when you eat-in...

Just tried it. Was impressed. House burger was good (not sure if the burger itself was so great, or just the way they constructed it), and fries were good even taken home, room temp.

Mocha Bleu Review (no pics)

This was our 3rd attempt to try Mocha Bleu as they don't take reservations for parties of 2, and are always fully booked.

What wins here is the most important part of any restaurant - the food was great, particularly the french onion soup and the mint chocolate chip milkshake.

However, there were 4 very big downsides:
1) The place was freezing. It was February, there was snow on the ground and you could feel the air conditioner. We were not the only ones wearing coats inside.
2) The cost of several items was higher on the receipt than it was on the menu. Shameful to not update your menu or warn the customer that you haven't updated the prices yet.
3) Tip was not only mandatory and included on your receipt, but it was 20%! Everyone has their own tipping strategy/mindset, but personally 20% is when a waiter/ess goes above and beyond.
4) Desserts, which sound super yummy, are all pareve. I don't get it. A dairy restaurant has the unique ability to do amazing things with desserts - starting with the basic of all - desserts taste better when they're dairy!! And guess what? They're not good. Worse than even fleishig restaurants. I couldn't believe it.

while their food might be decent their service is like what u get by the TSA ( they don't give a hoot) i've been there many times every time it was a diff issue, ive witness the owner/manger put up a fight with one of the customer saying that the food wasn't good, a diff time the waiter ran after me for 2 blocks because i forgot to add the tip (on purpose!).

I've actually tried to go there twice, and their poor service has prevented it from happening both times - once, I called them and was told last seating was one time (maybe 8:45?) but when I got there at 8:19pm (realt imte based on my cell phone), they told me last seating was 8:20, and according to their clock it was after 8:20.

Too many other options to bother with that.

I'm going to Nobo for the first time this week.... I know that several of the menu items are peoples favorites here on Dansdeals.

1.  Is there anything on the menu that is "nothing special"?  I want to make sure to avoid such an item for the first visit.
2.  Are the lamb riblets significantly better than the other appetizers?  I really enjoy sausage & peppers but if the riblets are really that good...
3.  Are the steaks anything close to Mike's Bistro?  The prices are not so much less.  Looking at the 20oz rib eye...

Thanks.

A dairy restaurant has the unique ability to do amazing things with desserts - starting with the basic of all - desserts taste better when they're dairy!! And guess what? They're not good. Worse than even fleishig restaurants. I couldn't believe it.

Went to Mocha Bleu again last night. Made a reservation online easily - the place was almost empty. Some thoughts:
1) It was so cold again. Fortunately, others complained and they turned off the AC at some point. Apparently they also complained that it was too loud, and the music was turned off - fine with me!
2) We went in remembering the 20% mandatory tip, so the final price was more in line with what we were expecting. My wife and I had different prices in our menus. lolz

Food:
Poutine Fries were GREAT! The gravy and cheese reminded me a lot of french onion soup and having fries in it instead of soggy bread was YUM.
Mac n Cheese - good
Penne ala Vodka - classic and very good (ask for more parmesan when the first batch runs out :P)
Vanilla Bean Mocha Blend - gross. I mean just gross. Perhaps I don't know what this should taste like, but we were hoping for a vanilla frappuccino type of drink like you might get at Starbucks. This tasted like bitter milk. We asked them to put in more vanilla, and I think they remade the drink. It still had no flavor. $8 ugh.
Avoided desserts, despite how pretty they look.

We're going to keep going back - apps and pastas are good, will stick to milkshakes and smoothies. And will bring a winter coat next time or have the courage to ask them to lower the air.

Disagree. For a suburb market, it's very respectable.

2 fine dining, a few casual waiter service meat, lots of takeout.

Perhaps you misunderstand what I mean by "Teaneck's restaurants are pretty weak."

That is not a quantitative statement, it's a qualitative one.

Pound for pound, Teaneck's eateries do not hold up to CH. (And I say that as a fan of both ETC and NoBo.)

Picked up a Dino rib ($27) to eat tonight. Currently heating it in my sous vide. Will report on quality but it is large, but significantly smaller than izzys. The tasting menu at etc for under $100 (plus tip) is phenomenal both in terms of food and value.

Top 5?

Of places I've been to, only Mike's is definitely better. And you can't get anything close to the amount of food for under $150 + tax/tip there.

Tierra sur might be better, but again, very pricey.

Also the byob element of etc is huge. I can do a 5 course tasting x2 with a bottle of wine for $250 all in. Very few other places like that.

Very few other places like that.
best and best value are 2 way different things

I've been to Mike's, wolf and lamb, Abigaels, tierra sur, shallots, La Gandola (only the higher end ones).

The tasting menu at etc for under $100 (plus tip) is phenomenal both in terms of food and value.

whats on the tasting menu?

They pick items from the main menu, occasionally giving you something off menu. The portions in the 5 course work out to 2 small apps each, and 2 half-size entrťe portions, and dessert. You can give them likes and dislikes. I think all the times I've done it, the entrťes have been 2 different steaks. Certainly at least 1 course will be steak.

ETC is great, particularly the food.  But it is isn't even in top 10 or 15 as far as ambiance and service. I don't believe it's even top 5 in food.

Easily rated ahead of it are:

--Shallot's

--Doma

Big shallots fan. I think Mike's is overrated.
Candidly, for its size, I think Teaneck's restaurants are pretty weak.  In a head-to-head with Crown Heights for example, it loses out by a wide margin.
Surprised by this take.

My unpopular opinion is that both Shallot's and La Gandola (LA) are overrated and stand out due to lack of better options in their respective locations. But in terms of NYC comparisons, they are both like Abigaels (fine dining but lacking elements to bring them over the top).

I haven't been everywhere, but I've only been blown away by 3 places in the fine dining category - Mike's, Tierra Sur, and etc.

When I make it to RC, Barnea, and UN Plaza, I'll happily adjust my rankings accordingly.

Agreed. Mocha Bleu and Shelley's need to turn it around, and Rabbica is supposedly good, but is too small to really be on the map.

Sammys food is generally fine, but the service is horrendous for a counter service place. Like comically bad.

If someone remembers the high end nyc restaurant scene from 5+ years ago ,knows that most high end places these days are only high end based on the high end prices they charge , the scene got more modern but the quality and service are lacking and a true rip off , I was by Mike's 2 times in past 2 years and we were completely disappointed and felt we got ripped off and left even the food that wasn't edible, somehow people still rave about him

High end meat restaurant's wasn't about raw egg yolks ,raw tartare ,sushi , pizza, fleatbread, please pass the beef sir

see that where i disagree, part of the expensive price is the plating the way things are presented the very expensive ingredients they use like Truffle, Dry aged meat, these things are very expensive.
the problem is when restaurants that serve u OK food for the price of high end places, i dont mind spending $200 + on a meal if its A+++

Yup. Dairy is horrific. If it weren't for the meat ones we have, Teaneck would be worse than... Atlanta.

Agreed. Mocha Bleu and Shelley's need to turn it around, and Rabbica is supposedly good, but is too small to really be on the map.

Sammys food is generally fine, but the service is horrendous for a counter service place. Like comically bad.

We agree on Sammy's.  Perhaps the worst service I've ever encountered. It's almost as if they're doing us a favor to sell us food.  Mocha Bleu is not a distant second.

Wow the wiki really needs work. First trying to make sure I have a list of all places and tried to categorize them in one of 4 categories: high end, mid-tier (has waiter service), low end (no waiter service but enough seating to not just be a takeout place), takeout. Please comment if I'm missing anything or if you disagree on how I classified something, specifically on the ones with red question marks, as I've never been to those.

Meat
ETC. - high end
Nobo - high end
Estihana - mid-tier
The Humble Toast - mid-tier
Dougies - mid-tier
Teaneck Doghouse - mid-tier / sports bar
Noah's Ark - mid-tier
Sender's Smoke Joint - mid-tier
Shnitzel+ - low end
Chickies - takeout/some seats
Sababa - ?
Yalla Teaneck - takeout/some seats
Chopstix - takeout

Pareve
Sushi Metsuyan - mid-tier
Rock n' Roll Sushi - takeout/some seats

Dairy
Mocha Bleu - mid-tier
Shelley's - mid-tier
Rabica - mid-tier
Sammy's - low end
Lazy Bean - low end
Poppy's - low end (although looks like a classic pizza place)
Dunkin' Donuts - low end
EJ's - classic pizza place
Pizza Crave - ?
Little Italy - classic pizza place (inside grocery store)

Well a most important point about this discussion here. Every restaurant in teaneck that I discussed with them about their business, they clearly told me they rely and stay in business only because they have a big percentage of out of towners , especially the high end restaurants they are in business only from out of towners like monsey and monroe customers specifically and all kind of just passbyers or guest from all over driving by and  employees and businesses in the area during the day for lunch and early dinner ,one high end restaurant told me many years ago that about 75 percent of his business is from out of town, that's the only reason most dairy restaurants have CY , if not they wouldn't carry CY at all , nobo for instance is a usual night packed with chasidish couples or guys .

Interesting, could be. Makes sense for the high-end. Not enough locals who eat out at a steakhouse every night. Same for the city - I'm sure most business is not from Manhattanites. But the small pizza places? I dunno... I often recognize enough people in Poppys, EJs, Sammys when I go.

Well that it could be so many pizza shops its because of this , I have worked in ridgefield park many years ago , almost daily tons of workers ordered from teaneck daily , so goes to tons and tons of Jewish owned companies surrounded around teaneck , and they get alot of business from that and also business lunch in nobo is very popular and busy because of this

Manhattan is a tourist destination and attraction point to go out for an outing so it makes sense besides business meeting with customers vs teaneck that is far from a tourist destination

In terms of distance, I'd say certainly worth it to try it once.

Haven't tried it yet, but last night we got from Narruto Bowl (https://narrutobowl.com/).  We went in with only modest expectations, but the food was delicious.  Boa bites were excellent and so were the soups. I recommend the curries over the shunkotsu.

FB chatting with them. There's a combo option for main + soup or eggroll for $16.50. Somewhat better, but Chopstix main is $11. While I greatly dislike Chopstix' general tso, I don't want to pay $16.50 for it either. I miss NKS and $6 chinese.

So in my second comment you'll see that you can get it for 16.50 but it's crazy because chopstix is $11 and chopchop in the heights is $13 (not sure what fairlawn is). For a simple general tso dish with rice you shouldn't be charging $16.50 (even if it comes with a soup. offer a cheaper option with no soup).

Fair lawn is 10.99 for the small general tso plus rice (7.50 lunch). Dinner includes egg roll.

Small soup is 2.50-3 and egg roll is 2.25.

Large general tso is 15.99 and it's enough food for 2+.

Grand and essex is very good pizza, just be aware that its a grocery store not a pizza store. then again it might not make a difference with corona anyways, but i think that poppys does have outdoor seating.
