Title: Snow in NY Area
Post by: rj95 on February 13, 2014, 10:57:24 AM
OMG! The snow just keeps coming down. I thought maybe people might want a place to post how much they're getting wherever you are, pictures, or whatever.

Indeed. I think they shot themselves in the foot by calling it global warming. That is the cause of everything but not the result. The result is it is cold where it is supposed to be hot, hot where it is supposed to be cold. Rainy where it is supposed to be dry, etc., etc. etc. But people don't understand that and disregard the whole thing
That is why I call it global messedupness

Florida beats the pants off the Tri State anytime though IMO.

snow is awesome for skiing. That's it. The winter that comes along with it is what I dislike.
Live somewhere warm year round and fly in to Utah to get the skiing rush out of the way. That's how I'd like it

I moved from NYC to Florida a few months ago and I love it here. You couldn't pay me to move back to the Tri State.

Definitely kills TS as TS is miserable in both summer and winter.

But I'm not sure I would trade a miserable winter for a miserable summer.  Late spring/summer/early fall are all amazing in CLE.  Those same seasons unbearable in MIA.

LA has the best weather/jewish community combo but has more than its fair share of other major issues.

HIs issue is no community.  Let's build one!

I've done that a few times when flying with aa, and had them put me on 2-3 bookings at the same time should one be canceled or one flight depart first. You find a rep who would be willing to do it then you can have a bigger availability.

HUCA HUCA HUCA!!!!!! Global Service  at its best! There were 13 people on standby for this supposedly fully booked flight (40 on standby when I checked in)and somehow after calling 3 times the agent was able to confirm us (party of 4) in economy+
On the 8pm flight out! Fortunately it was delayed to 9:50. Would not have made it otherwise
Got home quickly packed, ordered Chinese to the Airport-it arrived just as we finished checking in our luggage, even had enough time to eat it at the Art  lounge terminal B.

Now we need to find a hotel for the night..

If I leave the cars in the driveway then they won't be able to clear my driveway :)
No street parking during 2"+ snowstorms in CLE for the same reason.

I own both, but I also have a 2 car attached garage and the streets, sidewalks, and driveways are all well plowed=Just another day as long as we don't lose power.

Same here, but I have to do all the plowing/snowblowing. Plus breaking through the mountain that the street plow makes in front of the driveway is not always fun but I still love it. I'll take a blizzard over simply 20 degree weather any day

In the grocery now, this place is amazing. Parking lot is packed to the gills. Most of the cereal is gone, but there's plenty of raisin bran left.

There's no bread anymore, but they announced that there will be bagels in ten minutes so everyone is standing by the bakery door, open paper bags at the ready.

One guy bought 6 containers of chocolate covered raspberry cream, while another, with a packed shopping cart, is announcing to anyone who'd listen that he's not afraid of the storm, but he is afraid of his wife.

How short has you life been to date? :P

While it's definitely not a pleasant situation, it was way overblown (pun intended). I even moved my car this morning from an on street spot, and came back 40 minutes later to find that exact same spot available (even though it's an excellent spot that will not be blocked, and someone pulled into it as I pulled out this morning!)

Seems like poor diyukim to me. The example in the mishnah is it's good or bad for planting. Saying it's going to be cold - means it's bad for certain things (like going outside or planting)

Meh, snow is great as long as you're in a city that knows how to deal with it.

Bundle up, go sledding, snow tubing, skiing, tobogganing, snowman building...
Easy for you to say. Every time there's a blizzard I stress about getting my employees to work. Part of the reality of working in healthcare, it doesn't shut down because of the weather

Doesn't help while blizzard conditions are ongoing. If the snow has stopped I transport people to work myself even if roads aren't clear. And that still doesn't help for people whose kids are off and have no child care options

Best strategy for a situation like this is keep original flight but buy anywhere that's refundable (priceline Amex etc) alternatives as insurance. That was the only way I got out during a storm. Bought a ticket on every airline. And the one that flew, I took. But can be costly. Once the flight is canceled its too late usually... May already be too late.

Flight is not cancelled, but airplane is now in SWF for the night. (Tail#N629AE)
Flight leaves at 6:10 am for PHL. I guess we'll see if it takes off.

Both flights now showing on time.

Good to know that about becahwood.
1. Move to beachwood bc They're great at handling extreme snows
2. Move to Beachwood because they don't get that much snow (compared to snowbelt)

Out of curiosity, what's the largest storm recorded for beachwood/cleveland? Have you guys gotten 2+ feet recently?

"All local and state roads in New York City and Long Island:

A travel ban will go into effect on all state and local roads at 2:30 p.m. until further notice in New York City and on Long Island. Only authorized emergency vehicles, hazard vehicles and critical healthcare personnel will be permitted on these roads.

New York City subways and buses:

The last inbound or outbound trains on above-ground lines will depart at 4:00 p.m. today. After 4:00 p.m., service on above-ground lines will be suspended until further notice. Service will thin out before 4:00 p.m., and some subway lines may be delayed or suspended on a case-by-case basis as conditions warrant, so commuters should not wait until 4:00 p.m. to head home. All local and express bus service remains suspended until further notice.

Though not so much grass, but concrete sidewalk visible some places, while other are covered with more than a foot of snow. Same goes for cars (interestingly, could be different sides of the street of what's witnessed on sidewalks) where some are totally covered, and some have almost no snow on them at all (like my car right now).

My grass might have a foot of snow on it, but the kids are in school, the sidewalks are plowed by the city, my driveway is plowed, and the streets don't have a speck of snow on them thanks to nonstop plowing/salting and a parking ban which is just fine as everyone has an attached garage. Life continues as normal.

I love how a travel blogger (no offense) who knows nothing about meteorology is comparing a historic nor'easter that is anatomically stronger than many hurricanes to the clippers you get in Beachwood (though bH moving quickly and only brushing our area). Buffalo knows how to handle heavy snow. Beachwood doesn't.

I actually went to the airport here to see what I could do, but the agent was seriously not interested in speaking to anyone other than the passenger. we ended up schmoozing, but he was a jerk about giving me any pax information, even though I had the confirmation# and paid for the tix (with avios). I've been through 3 foot snow storms in Beachwood and in Brooklyn.
Beachwood doesn't leave a snowflake unpunished, CLE remains open, etc. as they're prepared and equipped for it.
NYC shuts down for a week and breaks down into hysterics as all flights and transportation closes.
Don't need a BS in meteorology to know that.

Of course not. Beachwood just happens to deal with the harsh winters extremely well and the summers are among the most pleasant in the country.

Sure. I'd pick LA over Beachwood for the weather, if not for the issues that LA has. But I wouldn't pick Miami for the weather.

I thought beachwood is outside the lake effect belt...

And lake effect snowstorms are easier to deal with and less expansive than blizzards. '78 was a bit before your time, but that's generally considered the worst recent storm in OH and a lot of the midwest, and it definitely shut down cities for days.  Anyone here go through it (in midwest or NE)?

There's no official boundary, but I didn't think beachwood got nearly as much as areas 50+ miles northeast. How about you tell me a 3ft storm beachwood got. Because cleveland's never gotten 3 feet out of one storm since they began taking records. Of course the airport is in a less snowy location, but 3ft is much rarer of a snowfall than you may think. Drifts, maybe.

Total snowfall and accumulation are two different things.

There might have been over 6 inches of snowfall, but due to the weather being mostly above freezing, and rainfall, what we got is mostly slush, which when treaded upon becomes packed ice.

My daughter told me this past weekend, that this year winter is acting like a grumpy and angry person, locked up in a room, coming out once in a while, throwing some snow, just to retreat back to its locked room.

Can someone please tell the Rothschilds that we had enough snow already and that it is already too close to pesach so they should please cancel the noreaster?

And on that note, several years ago it was quite cold leading up to Pesach, we made a last minute decision to go to Florida (Amtrak on the way there, while it was still a bargain using UR - but a never again experience, and one way rental for chol hamoed and the way back for a real bargain). Ever since our family is split between the Never Again camp and the Let's go to Florida for Pesach Camp. Some family from South FL is joining the chorus trying to get us to go there again this year, but I don't see it happening.

I love snow. plain and simple. and no i'm no longer a kid that gets to just wait by the phone to hear school is closed. it actually inconveniences me a lot but I still love it.
Basic idea is a 300+year old sefer quoting that when Rosh Chodesh Shevat (the day after the new moon following chanuka) falls out on a Wednesday as it does this year it will be a cold and snowy winter.
Thanks.

As it happens, technically the reason why it is warm in the northeast it is because of the cold in the west-midwest. There is a la-nina causing the cold in the west to dip further south. This is changing the jetstream and bringing warm southern air up along the east coast. Expect the NE to have above average temperatures for the remainder of the wionter with the opposite in the midwest/west.
This is all your fault. Jinxed it.

I must say that in over 30 years of living in NYC, I canít recall having such snow in Nissan.

One of my sons was born in late March, and there was quite a bit of snow accumulation on that day, but that was in Adar, I donít recall it being that cold, and by the time my wife and son were discharged, there was no trace of the snow. On the day of his bris kids needed summer clothes.

Public schools closed
2 days of ASP suspension for snow operations
All for about an inch of slush

Unintended consequences of a Marxist mayor.

They have scheduled snow days that they need to use. What are you complaining about? No ASP...dont worry there will be a ticket blitz to make up the revenue later this year. Thats scheduled too.

I stand corrected. After clearing the sidewalk in front of my house, I revise my statement above to 1.5-2 inches of wet snow. Everything else in my post remains unchanged.

That.

Keep ASP and donít give me ticket blitzes. Clean the streets and pick-up garbage instead of disposing of mountains of rock salt on the streets of NYC.
