Title: Don't Lose Half Your Tongue
Post by: ushdadude on February 24, 2014, 09:37:37 AM
My patient just got back from having half his tongue removed and 6 weeks of intense radiation therapy due to squamous cell carcinoma. Results are not so pretty.

PSA: Don't smoke

Doubtful, no identifying info of the patient, plus little identifying info on the doc = no problemo.

Maybe, but not in regards to this :)
You can do a quick google search for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue

Still, I don't think my patient would want his picture posted online. The he'll never know" argument doesn't sit well with me when it comes to my patients. Besides, there are more gruesome pictures on google if you want.

I agree that you should not post it, I was arguing that you had not previously violated HIPPA.

Me too.  I became a lawyer so that I can oppose other lawyers every day. You only get to do so once in a while.

I wasn't going to take your obvious bait to rile me up, but I cherish human life too much to ignore you.

Smoking is a known risk factor in oral SCC. (Try google-ing oral squamous cell carcinoma this time.) Itís compounded when alcohol is introduced. Your attempted "proof" to the contrary is laughable. First off, the list is not necessarily all-inclusive. Second, and more importantly, it is talking about SCC of the skin. So unless people start smoking through their skin, that website is irrelevant.

LOL
Unfortunately for my patient that's not true. He skipped his six month checkup so it was caught 6 months later than that.  Perhaps if he came earlier he could have had a relatively simple excision. By the time of surgery it was already in nervous tissue and once that happened he needed much more aggressive surgery and radiation.

Indeed, I believe skin cancer is the only cancer that is cannot be cause by smoking.

Just curious, which half?
The front or was it on the right/left side?

they removed a chunk from the front left and then wrapped the remaining part to fill in the void.

I never got it- why do we tell teens "smoking isn't cool", this equation goes thru a kids head: cool kids do it + I wanna be cool=smoker. I smoked as s bochur until my RY (whom had cancer on his lip from smoking) called me over and told me to "stop because smoking kills and I love you, Yes you'll be a talmid chacham but imagine the ads in the yated that there gonna write about your family collecting money for almono and yesoimim.
