Title: Getting Free Credit Report / Score - Identity Monitor Substitutes
Post by: HSS on November 09, 2010, 01:03:33 AM
I was wondering if anyone knew of any good programs to sign up for to get free credit report / score.

Yes I am aware that everyone can get a free report from each bureau each year by going to www.annualcreditreport.com, but this isnt what I want.

What I am referring to is something similar to Citi Identity Monitor www.identitymonitor.citi.com which I have signed up for approximately 20 times and gotten my free scores and credit report each time from all 3 bureaus and then just cancel before the month is over and then rince and repeat the next month.  Citi now charges a dollar for the first month which is still possible worth it for a month of their service and your reports and scores, but free is still better than a buck!!

Anyone know of any other good ones similar that allows you to sign up and then cancel within the month to avoid getting charged?

Thanks!!

Bump. Any credit monitoring (all three bureaus) with FAKO and alerts for $5 a month or less? I need something where I can see the actual report, not just summaries (i.e. who my hard pulls are from).

It cost $1, for $4 more a month I prefer to have something that doesn't require a monthly call. One less thing to remember each month.

+1 I have done it twice and have been happy, but how much longer till they realize i'm "churning" this deal? And their score is FAKO, but is it at least somewhat accurate and similar to FICO? (some of these free ones are wayyy off IME)

For me it's more about convenience.

The 'way-off' scores you're referring to are probably like VantageScore (http://www.experian.com/consumer-products/vantage-score.html), not even intended to be a FICO simulation.

Does anyone have suggestions as to when the best time to use the once every 12 month free report from annualcreditreport.com. I have been opening new cards recently and would love to see my full report to gauge where the hard pulls have been coming from, but I don't know if it is worth doing right now.

How good is the citi identity monitoring for $1? Even if its not a true FICO, does it give you the list of the hard pulls and what agency (TU, EX, EQ) made the pull?

They're a simulation, I guess it depends on how similar their algorithm is to FICO.

Check and see. FICO has changed quite a few times recently (maybe it always changes often), I'm not sure whether they (can?) keep up.

At the top it says all the records below are based on Experian. Does that mean anything listed there has been an Experian pull?

Also, there was a box on the left offering instant acccess to 3-1 credit report for all 3 scores, but it wouldn't go through when I clicked it.

Why are you guys using the citi identity monitor! Go with CreditSecure from American Express its $1.99 for the first month, and you can pull(soft pull) from all 3 bureaus every 24 hours. It may help for bumpage (doesn't look like bumpage helps by experian)

Because you can't rinse and repeat the amex deal. At least I couldn't.
About Citi Identity Monitor: does this only allow 1 3-pull per 30 days?
And what is it about this 'bumpage'? I've been pulling my credit a lot for
the past 2 years with different services and nearly everyday from CreditKarma
and I never had inqs fall off. Sounds like a load of bull to me. ::)

You need as many as 100 bumps. Credit Karma will only bump your TU pulls.

How many bumps are we talking about? Make sure you didn't get chopped (i.e. have your soft inquiries consolidated).

Just got this offer (https://www99.americanexpress.com/myca/crdmgmt/us/action?request_type=authreg_FCREnrollment&ccd=2X9&bcd=0001&cardtype=GFT&intlink=horz_CreditScore), Amex free/complimentary 30 day access to Experian report and score. Might be targeted.

Edit: Definitely not targeted, looks like it's for first time only.

idk...just used annuacreditreport to see the aftermath of a amex fr...experian had no negative reports so that is a gr8 sign being that it did have all 3 amex closings on it from last week...they havent shown up yet though on TU and equifax....though both those reports were very positive as well...at this point should i be concerned to get an actual score?

any tips how? the citi identity doesn't work for some reason...

I have citi monitor . Two days after I got it , I applied for the BA card . Nothing showed up on the report afterwards . There was mention of them only pulling once a month . I called them and they(someone in India) said it should of pulled , they probably knew who you were and didnt do an inquiry . Sounds like hogwash to me . Is the correct answer they only pull once in 30 days?

Seeing the report is useful, granted. But I saw the word "score" in this thread way too many times, considering it's FAKO and useless. Don't bother with non-FICO scores, they're meaningless.

Once every 30, but they are supposed to alert you to new activity. I highly doubt Chase didn't pull your report before issuing you a card.

Unless it only shows up once the actual card is issued. My card got stuck after verbal approval and was dislodged today (quoting the CSR). Not that it should be a factor since the pull happened a week ago and should be on my account regardless of approval. Or maybe just maybe I got lucky.

Obviously something is wrong . Since I signed up I got approved for a BA card , closed my CO card to get the BA card , and closed a Citi card . I didn't even get one notification . I think its wishful thinking that I didn't get a hard pull for my BA card . Will call them when I have the patience to deal with someone in India.

If anyone can post their # would be appreciated . I don't have access to a computer these days , and my phone is awfully slow.

Since you don't have computer access, this recommendation might not work for you, but perhaps you need to log onto your identity-monitor account. All your alorts are displayed there as well, I'm wondering what yours shows (could be just the email part isn't working).

I called yesterday to cancel as my trial ends on May 22. They said they nomally extend it a little while (in my case June 6th will be the first bill). So I agreed not to cancel. But they indicated that this extension is normal for everyone. So on my 30th day, june 22 I can pull again for no charge

Its funny I originally started this thread because I used to churn Citi Identity Monitor monthly because it was free for first 30 days, and started this thread to look for alternatives, I guess it seems I now have gotten tons of people hooked on churning Identity Monitor at the $1 a month cost, lol

if you're a churner and all you want is to see your report, there's no magic to getting it...

all 3 bureaus allow you to get your report if there's been a hard pull on you.  you don't have to be declined, indeed the bureau doesn't know what the issuer's determination was.  All the bureau knows is that a hard pull was done.  On their 'get a free report" page, they each have a checkbox or notice about adverse action or unfavorable action or change in credit limit or other benefit.   It takes about 5 minutes to pull all 3 reports and screen cap the browser page.

If you're doing a hard pull every 30 days or so, this is a totally free way to get all your reports  No score, no monitoring but if you don't care about that there's no need to remember to cancel the trial membership either.  I've done this for years now and never had a problem....

You've got a hard pull on each of your reports every 30 days? If that is the case you're a much heavier churner than the rest of us here. The more likely answer is that you are mistaken...

i guess i wasn't clear, sorry.  let me restate that first sentence: you can get a report from all 3 bureaus if there's been a hard pull on any one of your bureau reports.

you don't need a hard pull on each bureau to get a report from all 3 and you aren't limited to the report from the bureau that got the pull.  a few days after every hard pull, i pull all 3 reports using this method.  as i said, i've been doing this for years and i'm certainly not mistaken.  this falls in the "i know it works, i've seen me do it" category.

You're definitely not officially entitled to one report at each bureau when your credit only got pulled at one of them, what's more likely is that they don't check. I bet it works even with no pull at any bureaus, maybe what we should be saying is: You can get your credit report for free this way, recent pulls or not.

P.s. Why do you always have the quote underneath? Doesn't that make it harder for people to see what you're responding to?

Have you tried Citi Identity Monitor?

Find out what it cost (in your state) to temporarily remove the freeze. In NY Experian advised me that it cost $5.41 to temporarily/permanently lift the freeze, but it varies by state.

Officially? Hmm, I thought the point of this whole game was to find the unofficial perks...

top-quoting/bottom-quoting is about as old an argument on the net as Al Gore's pedigree...  I prefer bottom quoting because it's easier to read the message without having to sift through old messages.  Most times, quotes aren't needed in a web forum because the page up/dn key is....  right... over... there....  So, I should probably stop quoting as much ss I do - old habit from the 80s...

The DDF trend thus far has (ovewhelmingly) been top quoting.

Quoting is important on DDF, so we all know who you're responding to.

Yup. $5 is a small price to pay to get Chase apps approved. Anyone have any idea if TU/EQ also charge $0 for a freeze and ~$5 to lift it in NY?

Just because you've been doing it that way, doesn't mean it's right..   8)

Top quoting is better when you're replying sentence by sentence, interleaving the quote & reply - usually confined to the argumentative threads where you're responding individually to each point in a post.  But top posting, imo, works better because you can see the reply right at the top and if you remember the context of the conversation, it saves you from having to read through the quote.  And if you forget, the quote is right... down... there....  It's really not a big deal to me as there are more important things to argue about (not that I think you're arguing and I'm certainly not).

If you go to Clark Howard's site, he has the links for each CRs freeze page.  Each CR's freeze page has a link to the prices they each charge for residents of each state.

Generally, they're all free for seniors and active duty.

i guess experian doesn't have a chart on their site.  You have to go here and pick your state.
http://www.experian.com/consumer/security_freeze.html (http://www.experian.com/consumer/security_freeze.html)

charts for eq & tu:
equifax: https://help.equifax.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/75/search/1 (https://help.equifax.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/75/search/1)
transunion: http://www.transunion.com/corporate/personal/fraudIdentityTheft/fraudPrevention/securityFreezeTable.page (http://www.transunion.com/corporate/personal/fraudIdentityTheft/fraudPrevention/securityFreezeTable.page)

Nope, new username, same info, works like a charm once the old username is completely dead (up to a month from when you cancel IME), otherwise you have issues getting it to work.

u/n will work forever (or at least a long long time), I mean so long as it doesn't send alerts and/or allow pulling an new report >30 days from the last one.

Create a new u/n and you're good to go.

The only thing I can suggest is a $1 trial of one of the triple services and by using a disposable credit card to prevent furture charges. But you kind of use up your 'free' cards with some of the services once you do that.

Can you recommend any that you know provide the full date (mm/dd/yyyy) for every inquiry? Identity Monitor and some others only show mm/yyyy.

Sorry, I can not remember which one did not show full date exactly. I only remember and found it lacking that the citi monitor didn't show the full date. So I noticed that was out of the norm. I do know equifax (EQ Complete) trial, it will show full dates, but that could put you on the C* list if you go with them. I'm pretty sure that experian and transunion direct give full dates, but you of course use your free card once you do the trial (at least for some time).
Ok, I just checked my Transunion report obtained trough annualcreditreport.com and the full dates are listed, so TU direct should have that too (hopefully for their triple bureau as well). Quizzel (Experian) only shows experian inqs with full dates, Amex creditsecure is showing full dates on all three (i've not been able to churn that trial). The thing about these free trials, is they will only allow 1 triple pull on the very first time you pull from them. There are some off-brand pullers I can look for later.

My account was opened in Oct, between my credit 2 credit pulls in feb and late march a credit line suddenly showed up
which kind of pissed me off since I just lowered the limit 2k thinking it would increase my chance for another approval
by avoiding having too much credit with them. Not that it matters much once I close it soon anyhow.

If they don't remove it within 30 days I believe you have the right to sue.

Not sure. I see it says "Free Instant Online Access" in a blue box, and within it an orange box reading "Get FICO Score" which you are supposed to click.

It's a trial and if you don't cancel within 30 days they start charging you $14.95 or whatever it is.

Do pulls have a negative effect in and of itself, or just because they lower you're score. I want to know if I should apply on my name - I have a score of 758 and 9 pulls, or my wife's name, who has 737 and just 5 pulls?

The other option is freeze my Experian where almost  all of my New York pulls are form, but no clue how to do that. Plus it won't won't for Amex.

Thanks in advance!

How many pulls do each of you have n the past six months?

You have 5 on Experian in the past 6 months? I'd say go with hers, especially if she has any Amex accounts (or is even an AU on one).

those who've "churned" citi im. What was the reapplication process? did you have to start from scratch? were you able to use your old u/n p/w?

Have you done this yet?  Im about due for a churn on this and not sure how to go about it without getting charged for the $12.  Did you churn it?

Cancel the old one within 30 days and you won't get charged.

And then sign up for a new one?

So I should not ever check the old one again right?  (IIUC)

The old one will work (alerts) for like 45 days from signup (even after you've cancelled), then you'll be able to sign up with a new username.

"then" meaning after 45 days or after cancellation?

Whenever the old one stops sending alerts. It's sometime after cancellation.

Im sure this is posted somewhere so forgive my ignorance buttt I called to cancel citi identity monitor and after they informed me that I have 42-45 days not 30 for the trial, I asked if they can reduce the price.....2 minutes later: She offered to send 5 $10 mastercard GCs in 2 weeks, each one valid for one month for the next 5 months. $2.95 for monitoring 3 bureaus doesnt sound so bad afterall ;D

Yup. People here got that offer bundles with $6.95/month for monitoring, comes out to -$3.05/month for monitoring. They also have a $4.95 employee plan (but AFAIK doesn't bundle with $50 in GCs), I posted the link somewhere here as well.

She said the 6.95 is only for 1 bureau (experian i believe). Which is really all anybody cares about. Which thread should I search in for that employee plan?

I think the 1-bureau becomes 3 bureau, not sure though. Here's the $4.95 employee plan linky (http://www.identitymonitor.citi.com/employee).

Smokey Joe, I guess I'm wrong. But you might be able to get them to offer you something cheaper with 3 bureaus, e.g. $8.95. The $4.95 employee option clearly offers 3-in-1.

I also noticed in my report that he old citi account is now stagnant on my experian report. It's stuck with the old balance and comes up as a maxed out unpaid account. How do dispute this with experian without buying a report directly from them? On there site they only allow you to dispute with a report number?
I ended up using a report number from over a year ago to initiate the dispute.
Moral of the story- Never delete your old reports even if you have Citi IM you can't dispute experian without a report number.

If you have recent pulls on your report (30 days or so), you can request a free copy from the bureau that was pulled (tell them you were declined), that one should have the dates of inquiries IIRC.

1) Pulls are older than 30... So I guess my search continues.
2) Anyone ever request a free copy from the bureau saying you were declined if a) you weren't or b) its been >30 days?

Just state you received AA. It does not have to be recent. It seems they do not check.

Only for reports. The score is not mandated by the law, but they will be desperate to sell it to you all through the phone tree.

Thanks for taking the time to add this to the wiki.

But one can easily go to the bureaus website and instantly access the report online. No need to call.

The exact links are on the forum somewhere. But they can be easily found by looking on the websites.

Were you referring to the Kmart thing?

Iv'e noticed that with Equifax and Transunion  you can begin initiating a dispute and you will be given access to your CR. However with Experian  you must  have the report number.

So finally decided to make sure report is good after playing this game for a while.
Back when I was in HS my father added me to his card (Con Pres Plus) and it is still on my report. (Funny bec I am on one other of his cards [ink] and its not there...)
Either way he carries a high (50%) util rate. If I dispute it, how long until my score goes up?
Also, what is best/fastest way to dispute? I did experian online so far...
