Title: Dash Cam - Any Recommendations?
Post by: MisterHock on April 13, 2014, 02:08:45 PM
I'm looking for a decent mid-priced dash cam for my cars.
Does anyone have one that they can recommend?
Good night vision is important and gps would be nice too.

TIA!

RoadHawk makes a great one. I just bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CXB186Y/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. $300-$100 off at checkout. Really great features and easy to use. Reviews are very positive and so far I'm loving it. I will probably buy a second one for my other car.

How's the image quality? I'm sure that's a major factor.

Also brand names will obviously be marked up higher.

(Not mobile friendly)

Great comparison chart of all the features, from low end to high end cams.
They also have an article describing the different features that you may find important.

Another thing I noticed a lot of people complaining in reviews about junky mounts.
That's not gonna show up in the feature list so good to check out for it.

Well, mine requires installation and programming. Its not the regular one that goes in to a USB. And most important, the black box that records everything is hidden in the car away from the actual dashcam.

And I know someone that had this in his car, and thieves broke in to his car, and after searching for some valuables recognized that there was a camera so they ripped it off, but they didn't know that its connected to a DVR and a couple of days later they were caught by the Police. So such a camera you leave in the car, and it records when your not driving either.

The downside, it just records forward, not inward. It can also only hold a max of 32gb sd card. But maybe it's worthwhile.

I'm thinking of getting this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010GYYSU2/) dashcam. Does anyone here use it? Any reviews?

Yup. Another vote for SpyTec. Works great for my needs.

Revised.

Camera constantly forgets date if car is not used for 24+ hours. Then it's very difficult, if not impossible to correct date.

Avoid.

Was considering buying it. Thanks for the update. Is it with all their models or just the specific one you own?

Can't say, but it appears others are having the same issue with the one I bought.

Update:

I bought this one - http://www.amazon.com/Vantrue-Dash-Cam-Dashboard-Camera/dp/B01CODX8ZY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464629441&sr=8-1&keywords=vantrue+dash+cam

And I like it.

I also bought the cobra CDr 820 (for $30 on clearance as opposed to $50 on Amazon) and the cobra CDr 840 (for $50 as opposed to $80 on amazon) and if anyone wants to buy either of those off me before I return them, pm me.

Hi,

I really like the quality and form factor of the A119, especially for the price. it is by far the best image quality in its price range.
No Battery, so it is good for very hot or cold temperatures in the car.
Don't bother with the GPS mount, it is buggy, and will most likely hurt your case rather than help it unless you NEVER speed etc.

Frequently available on sale for about $60.

Anker's new camera seems to be similar, lower resolution with higher image fidelity.
It uses a battery though.

Aha.

Basically, if you get into an accident, generally you are arguing that it was 100% the other driver's fault.
If your camera shows a speed stamp that you were speeding at the time, even a little bit, the other party can use that to shift a portion or all of the blame onto you, as you were driving "recklessly"... Which can have a huge impact on the verdict, and affect your future insurance payments.

Not to mention that if you do turn over the whole camera and they see you speeding hours earlier, they might be able to give you a ticket.

If you are worried about not being able to pin down the location, then you should be able to do it pretty easily as you should have the past few hours of driving recorded, so you can match it up with google maps.

Thanks. So is it the GPS chip that records the speed?

It stamps the speed and location on the bottom of the video. You can turn it off it settings, but then why waste money?

Even though it is relatively new, it has really good reviews and the customer service responses on all feedbacks have indicated that they are constantly updating the software based on feedback which is amazing!
I will probably buy it and I'll report back once I use it a bit.

Looking around, the only camera i saw in this price range that beats it image quality is the A119.

This one had a much better build quality, Wifi to send clips to your phone and uses a battery vs a capacitor.

The battery is a plus and a minus, because you should be able to take it off the mount and record the area etc, but isn't as reliable in extreme hot or cold.

The A119 only has a bit better resolution. (And I don't think it's on sale now)

You most probably still cant go wrong with the Viofo A119.

AMAZING quality, no battery to go bad in summer etc, excellent unobtrusive mounting position, reasonable price.

Also goes on sale pretty often.

If you live somewhere with mild weather, you may want a battery model, so you can record with the camera detached.

If there is an accident where the fault is not 100% obvious, this will protect you, and possibly help your insurance payment stay down if the video shows you being not at fault.

A extreme example would be the horrible accident recently where the Chosson and Kalla passed away: Had there been a dashcam, I do not think all the other drivers would have been so quick to blame the only people involved who were not alive to defend themselves.

Some also have a parking mode that records of anyone hits your car while parked, but reliable ones are usually more expensive.

My dashcam paid for itself a couple of months ago after I was stopped by a state trooper claiming to that I didn't stop at a stop sign and i told him that i did stop and  i have the recording to prove it. He asked me to see it, so we reviewed it together and he left me alone.

Incredible!

...both that he stopped you for blowing a stop sign when you clearly did not and that he agreed to review the tape with you.

My dashcam paid for itself a couple of months ago after I was stopped by a state trooper claiming to that I didn't stop at a stop sign and i told him that i did stop and  i have the recording to prove it. He asked me to see it, so we reviewed it together and he left me alone.

Wow! Great story. Thank you!

and possibly help your insurance payment stay down

I believe in Russia it's required by the insurance, the reason you see so many Russian clips on YT

Don't believe any company in the US gives better rates with a dash cam

Me too. Now that I understand that it's pretty much a requirement it makes sense. If all cars in the US had dashcams we would also have some pretty wild videos on youtube.

What's the best reason why a normal person would want a dashcam?

I mean, I think it would be a fun toy, but what's the real reason if you're not a cab driver. Please explain it to me.
I just could have used one. Officer claimed I wasn't signaling to make a right turn and I clearly was, if I my dash cam was on, I would have sent in that as evidence.

It has audio. You can also see the reflection of the signal light.

Same here, but prefer to hard wire it into the fuse box with a fuse splitter and that way I'm avoiding all those messy wires and usb plug into my ports at all time.

Israel is a half step ahead.
They don't require mobileEye for everyone but if you have it you'll save on insurance and all rentals and taxis have it.
MobileEye prevents car crashes instead of videoing them.

In the market for a dash cam. Sounds like most of the ones in the market are decent, but only the most expensive ones will reliably capture license plates.

What do I actually need from a dash cam? Anyone here have any recommendations?

TIA.

Hardwiring it, is the same as hard wiring any dash cam either you do it with your OBD port or you hardwire into your fuse box with a splitter fuse.
Main reason why anyone would want to hard wire it is because you don't want to wire in your charging port 99% of the time.

There's a special kit for this one which you can see in the questions and answers on this product don't know if they came out with it yet.

Thereís a card inside the box with instructions to contact them for a free one. Iíd imagine itís for the OBD cable, but some people think itís bad for the car.

Noob question: Can having a rear camera on a dashcam backfire?
Lemoshol: Say that someone gets into an accident, they submit the footage to the insurance to prove they were in the right. One minute before the accident they were texting by a light, and it was captured by the rear cam. Can the insurance/court use this to prove that the person is an irresponsible driver, and make him/her lose the case, or at least raise their insurance premiums?

Before you give in the video you should cut the video to the part of the accident only

Why is it bad? What's the difference where it's plugged in?
The battery is being recharged each time you turn the engine on.

Anyone know how parking mode works?
mine works that when the car gets a hard knock the dash cam turns on and starts recording.
though the recording starts approx. 5-10 seconds after the the knock but it saved me $1200 when someone hit my car when it was parked and left the seen without leaving details and that man came out checking out what happened to my car i was able to see him on the camera and i knew the man face from shul so i got him to pay for it!!

I mean, how does the camera switch back and forth between parking mode and regular mode?

Not sure what your question is, but this is how it works:
Regular mode
When your turn on your car the camera turns on when turn your car off the camera turns off after 60 seconds.
Parking mode
When your car is turned off and the camera is off as well some sensor I guess is still on in the camera that's sensitive to sudden shaking, so when someone knocks into your car the sensor will turn in the camera so it will record what's going on and will then turn off after 60 seconds or will continue to be on if another knock is detected.

Anything else?

How does the camera know to switch the mode? Speed from GPS? Or it knows when the engine gets turned off?

So it seems that my Roav Duo doesnít do that. Turns off automatically after 5 minutes of being stopped, regardless if engine is running. Sounds like it does that from GPS. Then it only turns back on after a bump. Sounds like theyíre relying on my slamming a door or something to get the thing to turn back on.

Does anyone have experience with a duel dashcam that also records the passengers inside?
In a 15 pass van, is the pic clear enough to see the back row?
Also with a 64gb SD card, how much video time before it loop records over old video (for ex. if I need to check video from 20 hours back)

you can reach 20 hours but then again the higher you set the quality of the video the less amount of videos you can store while the lower the quality the more hours you can store, and then again the bigger the SD card the more hours you can store.
