Title: My 1yr of DDF!!
Post by: MaaYanky on July 30, 2014, 12:38:01 AM
My 1yr DDF anniversary = 58 CCs, 2.8mil points, 6 new destinations, average credit score went up 6 points, my family thinks I'm the next Dan (HAHA  ;D ) & still feel like a noob!
A big thank you to Dan, my fellow DDFers, all those CC companies with awesome promos, Rite Aid, Amazon Payments, EHD, PGGM, and of course my Eishes Chayil (about a third of the cc and points are hers ;) )

To another amazing year!!

Wow!!  That's about 10 cards per quarter for you.  So much for the 3BMs every three months!

It includes having a spouse in the mix as well :-)

Lots of 3bms and a few of those are AA Executive cards. All primary :-)

Excellent translation, but more so, the explanation, R' Chaim. Very deep. You obviously do your fair share of learning Torah. Maybe you can help me revive the "what are you learning" thread.

Reb Chaim, speaking of the nine days restrictions, what do you do this motzoei shabbos about the havdallah wine? Do you drink it or give it to a child? If the latter, how old? Or is it preferable to make havdallah on "chmar medinah"? If so, which beverage. Thank you.

mt. great for you. but its like a marriage i referred to it as shana rishona you get away with alot of cr@p we try to overlook and quickly forgive in the name of building a relationship. with cc it often works the same but it very likely will pay its toll in the future and it wont be fun, so proceed with caution

Just all the cards stacked up against my laptop after my monthly ritual of charging $1 to each inactive card on Amazon Payments to keep growing our 760+ credit scores :)
how many cards did you have to start with?
2!! Until last year I prided myself in earning $1800/yr cash back. Now I regret even thinking about cash back as having value.
DDF back then could have meant today I'd estimate about 30 million points, aside from what was used. Now I have something to motivate me for 10 years from now :)

Title: Re: My 1yr of DDF!!
Post by: MaaYanky on August 05, 2014, 11:29:35 AM
Why?

What it took to get that $1800 could have easily been $5k, points value...
That isn't even including all the sign-up bonuses I could have met.
I make sure every one of my nieces and nephews are started off, sometimes even before they're 18 :)
My kids will (BE"H) have more points in they're first year than I accumulated until I got on DDF!

You are right. I still use one method of cash back, my Amex Blue Cash Card. It gets 5 cents cash back in supermarkets with no yearly limit.
For 2 years I was getting calls from Amex reps trying to get me to 'upgrade' to a different card...

CB only is on actual spending. 30 million would include sign up bonuses, which weren't even a thought for me up until a year ago.

Happy 1 year anniversary to me!

A year in which I learned an incredible amount of knowledge from understanding the basics of credit scores to the intricacies of a OneWorld Explorer Award.

Between myself and my wife (and 1 card under my mom's name), I opened 32 cards and collected 1.5 million points. It was mind-boggling adding that number up the other day.

I went on a 6 1/2 week honeymoon through Israel and Europe, visiting 10 countries, taking 12 flights (11 in business) on 19 legs for $1200 a person and stayed at free hotels for 33 nights in a row. Thirty-freakin-three.

We enjoyed 9 free RT tickets NYC-DEN (my in laws) on SW and a couple more short-hauls thanks to Avios. Obviously, getting married to an OOTer this year meant I would start flying more, but I have never flown close to this much in my entire life.

I never imagined I would see the Colosseum or Stonehenge. Never thought I would have the Eiffel Tower in my skyline for 5 nights while staying at a $1000/night hotel. I know I owe you all plenty of TRs still, but for now, I'll just say thanks. Thanks to Dan for putting this place together and keeping it going and thanks to everyone here who has answered my questions and helped along the way. It's coincidental that on my 1 year anniversary, I'm actually starting my job. Not sure I could have done this if I actually had a job this past year. :P I expect my frequency here to die down a bit (at least during work hours), but I hope to get in many NYC lunch DOs.

To an even more spectacular year ahead!

Not sure I could have done this if I actually had a job this past year. :P I expect my frequency here to die down a bit (at least during work hours), but I hope to get in many NYC lunch DOs.

To an even more spectacular year ahead!

Thanks :)

How's the marriage coming along?
I've moved from the "so-far-so-good" phase to the "it's awesome, she's the best in the world!" :-)

Hah, well after Day 1, it's looks like I'll be unassigned until November, so I guess my time won't slack off too much for now.

There are plenty of great stories. But how many people took a 33 day honeymoon the first year they 'joined' the game? Def would make a great post IMHO. :) Shows how far you can come in a short period of time.

Guess I wasn't clear. It was a 6.5 week (46 day) honeymoon. Just 12 days were in Israel, staying at Zaidy's apt. ;D

Dan wanted me to write up something like @yehuda did.. IYH one day when I get the opportunity to travel on honeymoon I will write up an epic trip report as I already have something very big in plan, just saving up now & building the points & miles balance again..

Have traveled in business & stayed in the most stunning hotels to: Italy, France, England, Poland.. Best part was getting to treat family members of mine (who cant even afford economy) on every trip I took..

here is a photo of the wideroe mistake I booked to the Swiss alps.. (not everyone is in the photo) (Im in the middle with the go pro, not much to see lol)

Congrats @Yehuda and everyone else!  I just posted my story on the DDM site comments, and it pales in comparison to yours.  I just got back from my 2 week honeymoon to Paris and the Maldives at Park Hyatts ($1,200/nt!!), and it too was almost all free and almost all biz class flights just for opening some credit cards and doing some smart spending.  Unfortunately our day jobs wouldn't let us take more than 2 weeks off.  Would've loved to have seen more of Europe.

And yeah, everyone I tell that all I paid was taxes & transfers, and they were in awe.

I recently celebrated my 1 year DDFsary (two days ago). One thing that I really want to work on this year is HaKarat HaTov, so thanks to everyone for helping me:
1) Open 12 credit cards, and earn 600k points
2) Book a cheap ticket for my Mom to visit her granddaughter in Israel with the Wideroe mistake (thanks again to Drago for the post).
3) Book hotel rooms using IHG points for our layovers in Europe on the way to and from N. America (before I was on DDF I’d have paid $100 to sleep for a few hours!).
4) Open up a small side business selling things on Amazon (to finance future trips!)- thanks especially to Name Changed and ilherman from the Selling on Amazon thread.
5) Have a 60-day late payment removed from my CR thanks to a tip from CV (thanks, wherever you are ;) )
6) Increase my credit score by at least 50 points.
7) Have an amazing 5th (wedding) anniversary stay at the RC in Herzliya- thanks Dan for mentioning it a few times, and @Yehuda for the pics and inspiration. (pics below)
8 ) Get told by a Chase rep that I was “aggressively pursuing new credit” and slow down for the last six months :)
Thanks especially to Dan for having both the Main Site and the Forums- I’ve learned (and saved and earned) so much!

Goals for the coming year:
1) Get approved for my first Amex
2) Participate in a Jerusalem DO (that hopefully comes together before the last day)
3) Attend a DDS- Israel? Maybe? ;)
4) Book (and actually end up flying) an award itinerary
5) Learn more about Canadian cards and churning (wife is from there).

Thanks again to all!

To all those who were asking, I wrote a goodwill letter to Target based off of CV’s advice: http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=31484.msg661287#msg661287 (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=31484.msg661287#msg661287)
I told them I’m really sorry, accepted full responsibility for what happened (while explaining the circumstances- I was young, didn’t know enough, just got married etc.), and told them that since then I’ve done teshuva (probably didn’t use that word) and have been super responsible and made sure that it will never happen again.
Two months later, I got a letter from them saying they've asked for it to be removed from my CR!

Mazel Tov! Onto a great next year!

(Not sure what I inspired about RC Herzaliya though. I didn't head that way. :( )
I didn’t remember things clearly- thanks to SamKey for the pics (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=31281.msg894328#msg894328) and to @Yehuda (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=42333.msg849893#msg849893) for inspiring me to “casually” mention that it was our five year anniversary (and get a bottle of champagne).
That reminds me: when we checked in they said “Oh, you’re the couple who called before about the anniversary, right?” and when I said that I didn’t think I called in, they said “Oh right, it was someone else- it’s their three month anniversary of having a baby so they’re coming here to celebrate!”. Sounds like a creative DDF type of celebration to me- anyone here? ;)
Other story from the RC- when we signed in, the clerk showed us my billing address in America, and asked "Is this your address?" When I hesitated (I didn't know if he wanted my Israel address) he said "Oh, is it your friend's address? Don't worry, we know what to do" in a knowing way.

Wow another great first year.
Thanks CM! Hopefully if you keep working at it, you’ll be able to celebrate your one year anniversary one day too- we were all n00bs once 8)

Happy 2nd year anniversary to me!

CANNOT BELIEVE another year has gone by. Wow. Re-reading last year's post, and the most ironic part might have been how I thought my involvement here would go down because I started working, hehe...

Year 2 vs. Year 1 in numbers:
27 new CCs vs. 33 new CCs
~1.5M points vs. ~1.5M points - incredible how, without realizing, I earned just about the exact same amount of points as last year.

Got in 3 trips to DEN to the in laws, a 3 day vacation in magical Orlando, and a week in paradisical Kauai at the GORGEOUS Grand Hyatt Kauai - all on miles and points. Off days at work really put a limit to our traveling compared to last year ;) but we still were able to get away for a nice amount of time b"h.

Finally had the honor to meet Dan as well as countless other DDFers at more DOs than I can remember and even spent Shabbos at a DDFer's home.

Something that really hit home with me this year was - and I hope this doesn't come off in a haughty way - how little I know. While I might seem like a "real expert" to my friends and family, out here on the forums, you don't realize how much people know until you get to know them a little more personally, especially in the world of MS. Some guys here just make my jaw drop. I realized, though, that everyone needs to find the DDF level that works best for them and keeping this going at a simple, steady level seems to be best for me.

If any newbies read this, I'd give one bit of advice for getting started: don't be overwhelmed by the information here. The learning curve is great, but once you're past it, it's pretty easy to keep yourself at a comfortable and consistent level.

To the best hobby ever!
