Title: Dan appreciation thread
Post by: MoGro17 on September 21, 2014, 10:32:41 PM
Hi all!

I'm starting this thread with the specific purpose of showing appreciation to Dan for all the work he did, does and (hopefully, thankfully) will continue to do on all things DansDeals related.

Today's post, http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/52092, about hotel award stays was yet another example of Dan taking the time to explain a topic to everyone in detail in a way that is easy for all (or most) to understand.

I understand that the website carries his name and that should be "thanks" enough, but I feel that it is important to show him that we are very appreciative of all he does.

Thank you, Dan; because of you, I now have an amazing credit score. Because of you, I have enough points and miles to take my wife on an epic vacation that neither of us could have imagined possible.
Thank you.  ;D

Also I would like to add my appreciation to Dan for everything he does and especially for having all the information that I needed available to build a credit score from 0 to the point where I just opened 2 CC's only  4 month later thank you Dan for that and everything else you do.

+1 but dont you think that sometimes he posts things which are not really deals, only that some people should buy? I really appreciate dans work and owe  him a lot. But i think instead of posting (sometimes) non-deals he should just give a link to Amazon and eBay.

Dan likes to hear critic as well, as long its respectful and not Chutspedig.

Personally I can get annoyed sometimes from these ads/referrals as well, but I don't get why you people don't understand him. When you buy a free app, it comes with ads that annoy you right? No one is here to work for you for free and then go collect donations to feed his family.

But seriously how about we keep this a "thank you Dan" thread and not a "stuff I want to tell dan" thread

Dan deserves that EVERYONE, not just the noobs and the DDMSers, to click on all his links.
It's not like he doesn't provide us all with these warm cozy forums and beautiful lengthy posts that only an expert like Dan can provide.

Rabbosai!! When you will wake up and start showing true appreciation!?

Also Macy's for selling clothing them. Without them I wouldn't have any clothing to wear.

I love the site, and think the forums are invaluable....However, IMHO, thanking Dan is like thanking Chase for paying you interest on your savings account or target for selling you diapers. Its his job, his livelehood and how he (I assume) supports his family.

Just seems a little funny to me that all. To clarify, not criticizing, Dan seems like a tremendous guy and I love his site just thought this was over the top.

The above posters either think he does this site as hobby,  and there's no money being made,  or. . ..

I do. But I dont believe it is the same thing. The bus driver is not compensated by driving me on the bus directly. Dan does not run the site out of the goodness of his heart (It is a good heart, again, not criticizing him!:) )

He makes money by us clicking on links, ads, page views etc.

Maybe I would be better off deleting the post.

Yes.
But  as puddles said,  he's just a worker. I don't call up the store owner or the bus company and thank them for proving me with bussing.

If you stepped off the bus and the bus company owner was standing there you wouldn't say thank you?

I don't disagree that this is a business as much as any other. And the whole site is built with that business on mind. As are the DDS's, etc. That doesn't preclude me from saying thank you

I like having a hobby that makes me money; points that I can use to fly myself and my family where we want to go for little or cost.  I like seeing things on sale that I can get a good buy on - even things I don't really need.  I even like seeing things on the site I don't want to buy, so I know I'm not like Pavlov's dog that has to buy everything Dan tells us about.
I like the site.  I support the site by using his cc links and others.
I like DDF.  It gives me entertainment and an on-line 'community'.

So I appreciate that Dan makes a living this way or I wouldn't have those things.
Thanks, Dan.  Ksiva v'chasima tova.

-1  I absolutely would if he were an outstanding driver and I wanted to let the owner know he's not just doing his job, he's going over and beyond!

When one gives tzedaka one fulfills the mitzvah, but doing it with a smile fulfills the mitzvah of b'simcha.  Dan does his money making job b'simcha and we feel it and benefit from it.  Why shouldn't I have hakaros hatoiv?!  Please!

Just because HaShem does His job of making me breathe, walk, eat, etc. on a daily basis...that means I don't have to thank Him??!  It's a good thing we are entering aseres yomei tshuva soon.   p.s.  TY, again, Dan.  I've made some really good connections/friends because of your forum.

Perhaps, but srap's point still stands. I'm in complete agreement.

When you get off the bus you thank the driver. When someone does you a service, even if you are paying them, you still owe them thanks.

I'd like to thank Dan for helping me be able to book my family of 6 to Israel this week for a cash cost of $450.

It's been my dream to do so since I started following ctownbochur sometime in 2005-2006.

Also thanks to Dan for helping me stay in Hotels and fly on many flights all over the world for the past 7 years with little or no out of pocket cost. It has changed my life. Really.

My kids have asked me why we always stay in Sheraton hotels, although I've branched out into other brands more recently.

Special mention for that time I had to fly jfk-lax same day when my brother was looking to spend $600 for a one way I booked on business class no problem. And the $25 delta tickets to lax as well.

Yes, this started as a hobby for Dan but I'm glad that today im able to help support the continuation of DansDeals. He's done for me much more than my using referral links does for him.

And finally...

Many people wish they were around for the mint coins but my back is still hurting from lugging those things around. And I broke a nice suitcase BC of those. Gift cards weigh far less. I'm happy to pay a little for the convenience. No limit on coins was sorta nice tho....

I light of today's fireworks, I'd like to resurrect this thread simply to affirm that I am very appreciative of Dan for giving me the skills and know-how to experience fairy-tale vacations that would otherwise be impossible.
While I don't take advantage of every deal, workaround, status-match or "hack" for one reason or another, I have enjoyed the fruits of his labor in some small capacity and for that I am thankful.

Furthermore, I've seen, in my travels, how those in power can severely abuse their position, especially in the face of a personal attack. Today, I witnessed Dan respond to a personal affront with dignity and a levelheadedness that rivals that of a Tibetan monk. I am truly, duly impressed.

I tip my hat to you, Dan.

Thanks Dan for the way you respond to comments on the site. The speed, quantity and quality of your responses is astounding to me. Today's car rental insurance post is a particularly fine example.

You respond to us dolts with such class and skill, and it is much appreciated (CTLMS notwithstanding ;))

Thanks for everything.
Sorry about the Chase links.

Thanks Dan for blogging about what interests you. Glad you can do it and make a buck as well.
Ive been following since the CTBochur days, and remember the roll out of the forums. I enjoy the articles and have learned a little about award travel. Although its probably a drop in the bucket, i am able to fly myself or family (domestic)without thinking twice.
One day i will splurge on a business class flight, and it will be thanks to you.

JJ-I usually skip the amazon deals, but i have bought once or twice. I'm still waiting for another sale on Ticket to ride. I honestly dont mind, and understand that not every deal will interest me.

Thanks both of you for your work, and also to BAHyman for keeping the forums running, and anyone else who helps.

Also thanks to fellow DDF members who are always willing to help out, even if its not in the right thread (as long as you dont open a new thread...)

I will add that unfortunately i am sometimes (like today)embarrassed by the postings of some DDF members. Besides the lack of hakaras hatov, there is a tremendous chillul hashem.

GO DAN!!

Thought I would post today after the "Consumer advocate" debacle ...

Thanks to Dan I was able to take a trip that we had dreamed of for years to Eretz Yisrael with our kids and even sold some points to pay for rental car. We also got an awesome LA trip from the glitch tickets last February. We are working on a dream vacation to Hawaii as well. Not to mention all of the $ I have saved on random deals here and there.

Yashar Koach to Dan and the whole team.

Thank you Dan for not writing blog posts in which you basically say nothing of value.

Inspiration (http://viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com/2015/03/26/singapore-airlines-lets-you-waitlist-for-awards-is-this-a-good-strategy/) for my comment. To sum up: Let's talk about SQ waitlisting. Wait, I actually have nothing to say since there's nothing predictable about it.

Not for a specific deal, but thanks to what i've picked up here, i was able to get rebooked on another airline after flight was cancelled despite being told that it could not be done because...
...its weather related
...its a mileage ticket
...all flights to XXX have been cancelled
...the flight you want on United has been cancelled

The key was knowing what the agents are really empowered to do. In this case the gate agent was clueless or unhelpful, but the group ticketing phone agent was very helpful.

Maybe I'm getting too old for DDF, but it seems that in the past 6 months, theres been too much garbage outside of JS. Of course, there will be some off topic comnents spread throughout, but it was getting so full of garbage that most posts (at least thats what it seemed) were devoid of any useful content. You had to read through back and forth banter to get anywhere.
Lets restore DDF to a useful and helpful community that it is and that we want it to be.

And thanks Dan for helping out.

Unfourtunately I found out in the morning that I had to fly in for a levaya.
thanks to Dan and co., I was able to get a flight, and a flight back without robbing the bank.
ARV of my round trip was approx $1000.
I paid closer to $150. And got economy comfort, priority boarding, as well as some time to unwind in the lounge.
Thank you. May we use you for simchos in the future.

While I'm at it...

More than his encyclopedic knowledge of all things mileage and travel, and his incredible ability to dumb down and explain even the most complex redemptions to ensure anyone can take advantage of a good deal, I most respect @Dan for his positivity, mentchlichkeit and the way he deals with "haters".

As someone who put himself out there with a real name and picture, he's had to deal with everything from mild critique to hate-mail in a very public way. Some of the comments on the site and forum are downright creepy. Yet he's handled it all in the classiest way. I think this is a a huge testament to you and how he was raised.

So while we're all singing JJ's praises, L'chaim to you, and keep on enjoying the tremendous nachas I'm sure you are having.
