Title: Your scarriest or scary moment
Post by: sillypainter on September 29, 2014, 09:06:38 PM
I was biking on a bike trail this afternoon and what I always feared happened.

As I was coming to the end, I see from very far away a BIG dog with no owner, I said to myself I'm really scared of this BIG dog, where is his owner, what's going on? And then when I got like 200 ft. from that "dog" I see WOW its a black bear. BH he ran away from me.

Happened 3 years ago. In short me and my wife went rafting in an isolated lake without life vests (I'm a lifeguard and wsi) . The water was gushing very very fast. Suddenly we hit a branch that was floating there and our rafting tube/boat busted and we were thrown deep under the water. We didnt know that the branch on top was a huge tree under the water. After getting some deep scratches and cuts i quickly freed myself. When i swam back up i saw my wife was not there!!!!
In the end i pulled her up and after being hospitalized for a week she was okay

In the beginning the lake was not deep at all and was not moving fast.

Officially everyone must wear a life vest. But not knowing how deep and dangerous and Scarry the lake will become i thought worse case I'm a lifeguard... but didnt know that the water will take away my power.

On second thought that was more thrilling than scary, scary is when I am NOT in control.

That would have to be the time I drove from Detroit to Montreal through a huge snowstorm. I was driving most of the way and I must have been going not more than 30MPH. At one point someone took over but I saw she clearly didn't have too much experience with snow driving so I told her to pull over at the next exit so I could take over again. She decelerated too quickly and before I knew what was happening we swung wildly, first left and came within inches from the center barrier and then right, spun around and landed in a huge snow bank. Thank G-D the snow was soft so no one got hurt but the car was stuck inside until a tow truck came by.

On a trip to Montreal we went for a day trip to Mont Treblanc.  It's just over an hour away by car. The roads were empty, so I drove fast.  At some points, the road is a thin bridge with 2 (or was it 4?) lanes of traffic and guard rails high above the valley below.  At 75- 80 mph I had very bad visions of going over the side and crashing my whole family into the abyss.
On our recent trip to Montreal, my husband suggested we go to Mont Treblanc since 'last time we had so much fun there'.  I declined.

Ive been boating many times and ALWAYS wear one (im a WSI, LTI, EMT).

If you dont like those orange  ones that  choke ur neck, they make good thin vest ones. Check dicks sporting  goods or the like.

Lot more expensive but they make some really nice ski vests.

2) did 110mph on cruise down a straight highway that had a 70 or 75 mph limit.. straiiiiiight as can be in Kansas.. was a 4 hour drive.. passed by Fort Riley with All the military stuff & for some stupid reason I needed a photo.. I slowly started moving to the shoulder while going 110mph.. swerved back into the lane and car was on 2 wheels.. I thought it was going to be the day I died. learned a lesson for sure..

Last winter,
Miloli Ridge Road, Kauai

Rented a 4wd. Apparently it had rained for a while before we arrived. The gate was open, and we were excited for the view at the end. We start along the road, and the road doesn't seem too bad at all. After a couple minutes we hit some nice bumps, and I'm thinking now I understand why you need a 4wd. Then we get to a decline with a crack/ mini ravine going diagonally across the road. I'm driving along when suddenly the car slides and spins sideways because it lost all traction due to the mud. I don't live in an area with snow, so this is my first experience with completely losing control of my car, and my initial reaction is of confusion mixed with a healthy dose of fear. Then I react and and compensate by spinning the wheel the other way, and the jeep then spins the other way.  Finally I get it straight and realize the wheel is stuck in the crack in the growing like we're on a track. So I kinda guide the jeep along in the track and it slides down with a few sideways jerks till we get to the bottom. I proceed thinking/hoping that's the worst of it. When I see there's more of that, I realize I can't keep going and have to turn back. So I go down another hill, sliding and spinning 90 degrees both ways to the bottom till I could get to a clearing with enough space to turn around. Basically the car won't go up the hill-too much mud. I tried slowly to get max traction, i tried backing up then accelerating and it won't go past a certain spot - I even put petal to the metal and it would on lurch and spin sideways . We finally give up, abandon the car, and hoof it back to waimea canyon road in the light rain (luckily we brought disposable ponchos) and hitch a ride back to the rental place by the airport. They call a tow company and are told it would cost 1200 minimum. (My insurance says they wont pay because the car didnt break down.) And they wouldn't try retrieving the jeep for another week. I'm getting nervous that I would have to buy a new car,  When they remember mom and pop shop tow company,  and they said they will do it for 600 right away and we exchange info and he goes to get the jeep. Luckily,  the rental place agreed to give us another car meanwhile, and we make it back to the hotel just before Shabbos. We got back home on Sunday, and haven't heard from the tow company since.

Whoa.
Didn't you read the book though? It says to turn back if things look wet!
Title: Re: Your scarriest or scary moment
Post by: Something Fishy on October 06, 2014, 06:10:26 PM
The book also says (re. Polihale IIRC) to "pull an important looking wire" before calling the tow truck. That way it's a "breakdown", not just getting stuck in the mud :P.

Post by: Buruch on October 07, 2014, 12:44:58 AM
I didn't have the latest version of the book, so it did not say to turn back if wet, nor did it say to pull a wire :) But the tow guy never even called so...

Scariest moments to me are where you are in a situation that other people there passed from the same thing.

With that said my top two are probably:

1. A wave on a beach in Cali that pushed me under and spun me around - a man died from that wave.

2. Being swarmed by killer bees in Palm Springs - a man and his wife died from the same swarm that day.

I do a lot of driving and know not to mess with the truckers, after a long trip with about a hour left to go a trucker decided to drive me off the road I didn't do anything to start up with him I was pulling up along him on the left lane and he started moving into me so I flash and honk the guy kept going I was on the shoulder slamming in the brakes and he kept going into the shoulder b"h I was able to fall behind him but I watched him go into the shoulder if I would have still been alongside him I would have been crushed into the barrier.

As of last month, I'm officially considered cured.

Mine: The elevator had old fashioned doors with tall windows, one door's window had broken & fallen out.

When a kid put their head into the elevator shaft to look how far down the elevator was, but it was actually coming down from the floors above. Pulled their head out with about 1/2 a second to spare before getting decapitated.

Especially scary considering the accident that just took place on the carnival cruise. (Don't Google it. I've warned you)

haha
although he never said his kid put his head in the elevator shaft
so he could simply be referring to him
which would make emkay a kid

What happened?
Long story short, I was on the wrong end of a armed robbery at someone's house.
They gaged, blind folded and "handcuffed" everyone at gun point.
At one point I was sure they would shoot at least one of us.

Was pretty intense. When I first saw them coming in the house I tried pretending I was sleeping but  I was shaking like a leaf.

When I fell out of a window head first! I don't know for whom it was scarier for me of my father that watched it happen!

The story:

We put up a tarp as a shlack on our sukkah and tied it to the wall with a string (Cant explain exactly the setup)
That sukkos it really rained and the entire tarp was starting to sag so I went to the second floor to pull the string to make it back on a slant.
Well when I gave the string a pull I was not at a good angle so I had a brilliant idea; lean out the window and pull!
So I did and... (Just imagine a father watching his son going head first out a window!)
Boruch Hashem I landed on a few pieces of Bamboo (they broke) but that gave me the split second to grab onto a beam!!

Side note the entire side that I landed on crashed 20 min later from the water pressure.

when a similar issue happened to our failed Shylock attempt we just went into the Succah with knives and made holes in the tarp. It was pretty crazy to see the walls buckling from the weight

When my sister in law was kidnapped (http://nypost.com/2011/08/25/li-housekeeper-kidnaps-baby-after-being-fired-by-rabbi/).
The scariest bit was as the cop said, "had she have gotten onto the train and to Manhattan, this may have ended very differently".
The miracles upon miracles upon miracles that caused the story to have a happy ending still scares me now, years later.
