Title: Miles and more
Post by: MAJ on October 21, 2014, 05:07:23 AM
Just flew with an infant using miles and more miles. They told me on phone, when I booked, that I would pay $17.50 for infant at airport. When I got there they (Swiss ticket counter ben gurion )charged me $385. Did I make a mistake somewhere? Will calling miles and more get me my money back?

You should call them and get a refund. This $385to was charged as you were flying on a PAID ticket. M&M charges very little for infants. Not sure why they told you to pay at the airport.

That's what I told them but as at this point in time I was 40 min before flight, there was no time to argue

You got a dumb rep.

I would have HUCA till someone would have done it.

Should of asked here, at this point I would try to call M&M, but I doubt they'll give in.

It's been posted many times on here that M&M only charges $17.50 to add an infant.

When the rep said you need to add at airport, you should of HUCAed or asked on here what you should do.

Lessened learned.

they told me on phone it would be $17.50 at airport ( which I knew as well from other places) so why would I huca at that point in time?

Just got off the phone with miles and more - I was charged 12,500 for a one way domestic award (US48). I asked why it wasn't rounded down to 12k, like it always was for one ways? And the rep told me they changed the rules on October 1st and they no longer round it down, one ways are 12,500 and 17,500

Just called M&M. As always, you never know if you can trust phone reps, but I was told that if you book a RT, you can take 1 stopover in each direction as long as you hit 2 regions in your trip. That works for me!

UA used to have. But to be clear, when a award chart has a first class blank it does not necessarily mean that an airline operates a F cabin on that route.

This may seem cheap but why not ask....
Looking at a flight on a 747-400 out of FRA - the business product looks terrible - I can't sleep in angled seats so almost not worth it for me. Just saw the first class product and I'm considering, but would have to give up a whole bunch of *wood points to transfer and make it worthwhile (unless there's another transfer partner I'm not aware of).

Anyway here is my crazy question: Can I book myself in economy and my wife in first on LH, and then just go hang out with my wife in the first class cabin (considering there's a chair and a bed)? Anyone ever tried anything like this? Will they physically bar me from the first class space?  ;D

looking at flying lx with miles and more miles for tlv-nyc.

searching on expert flyer :when i put in tlv-nyc than for 450 am tlv-zrh and 950 am zrh-nyc, it shows 3 seats in I (business)
however if i search separately, tlv-zrh will show 5 seats on the 450 am and than zrh-nyc will show 7 seats.
miles and more website is showing at least 4 seats a flight if done separately but only allowing 3 if done together.

I need 4 seats, any advise?

Why would you prefer using AC? They charge YQ also, and more miles for that route than M&M (which considers Israel part of Europe, as long you're booking from an Israeli address).

If you'd take AC over m&m, you are valuing AC at .83! WOW!

From what I've read, there's no way to use Miles and More points to fly from the U.S. to Israel (or even to Europe) without paying exorbitant fuel surcharges. Is this correct? I was thinking of applying for Barclay's Miles and More CC now that they've brought back the 50K bonus.

2nd rep---  ur offer is 35k after first spend 30k when spend 5k -total 65k

3rd rep can not say as never saw this - look in 2 different places see different offers attached to ur card -will open a case and will take 10 days to get info

Also I have friend who also did not get 20k first spend and he was charged the annual fee  on his statement and paid it

I have 55K Miles & More miles, that I'd like to use on a J ticket from LAX-TLV. I'm short 12K, what's the easiest way to get them in? SPG? I heard that takes a while. Or is there something else I should be doing? The actual traveler does live in Israel, is there a way for him to book for 52K or did I misunderstand that?

SPG is the only currency which transfers to M&M!

(Lately even this option has become risky, as it seems they are specifically auditing accounts with SPG transfer)

Looking to book a OW F award for a friend. Routing is TBS to LAX via MUC/

some questions:
1 - I believe the cost would be 85K miles, but not sure what the fees come out to. when i try to price online i get an error that i dont have enough miles to book the award.
2 - Is there a discount if the friend lives in TBS and i can open his account with TBS address? (similar to TLV discount discussed in the thread)?
3 - is opening a new account and transferring a large amount from SPG a problem? can i transfer points from spouse's SPG account? how long do SPG transfer usually take?

1- You can check ITA for the breakdown, and see how much the YQ is.

3- Transferring points from SPG is definitely a trigger for a audit, however if the pax is the AH I don't imagine you would have a problem, as when they audit they generally just ask to send in a copy of AH passport.

SPG-LH only last names need to match.

Transfers times can vary significantly, anywhere from about 3-10 days.

For more information, check the "SPG to airline transfer master thread"
(on Tapa so I can't  search the link for you,  sorry)

Nope.

The discount is as follows " For members residing in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya,
Morocco, Syria and Tunisia, the award levels for Europe apply. The journey
must start in the member’s country of residence."

Basically, If you live in one of the above counties, then when departing from your home county, your home county is counted as Europe. So nothing here to your benefit.

Also, to be safe, make sure that the AH has photo ID with an address that matches the account (not that I think you'll be audited, just to be safe incase..)

Thank you both for your replies. very informative.
unfortunately, it looks like i overlooked one important fact, that TBS is not part of Europe on their region maps. so it basically becomes a 3-region award and requires more miles than available.
you win some you lose some...

I was actually contemplating adding to my original post that LH, LX, OS, and SN are all part of part of M&M and would therefore show online, as opposed to UA (which is what OP asked about) and the like which are partners, and would thereby necessitate calling in to book.

Glad to help.

Partners only have access to saver awards, so that's what you need to look for.

Either should work.

Lol. The $5.60 flights are probably one way, the $11.20 round-trip, and the $86.20 is a round-trip within 21 days that they're charging a $75 close in fee (which is irrelevant to you).

There is a higher risk of them asking you to send in a copy of AH passport, and proof of address in some instances (their version of auditing the account) if you are booking for a 3rd party.

M&M has much better availability on their own partners than what they open for *A.

So the answer to your question is, usually not.

Just a data point, seems as if with M&M you can get practically any and every seat with miles even if there is only one or two left for sale.
I just booked using my miles for LX in j from TLV for 2 seats, and these are the last few available on that flight.

And the flight I want has over 20 seats available for sale, but none for mileage.

There is no generalization with these things..

5k or 6k?

It's 5,000 for doing the first top up of 20 euro, and 50 for every euro loaded, so if both of them combine, another 1,000 should post soon.

Wanted to order, but (1) they wanted 5€ just for ordering, and (2) noticed the following in the T&C: This marketing offer valid for the first 1000 ordered SIM-cards.

Saw that too on the limit, wouldn't they remove the page to show the promo? Didn't have to pay a fee to request the card, and it was sent quickly.

I had the issue with SQ what you have to do is treat it as 2 separate segments so lets say you are doing EWR-LAX with a stop in IAH. let them search EWR-IAH and then IAH to LAX and they should be able to book it as one award

IIRC a phone agent told me 3 months of activity to prevent expiration, and it applies to the whole account, including previously accrued.

So you just need to just spend on the card for the months before they expire or do you have to keep spending?

Is there phantom availability on M&M? Was looking for EWR-TLV and it gives me a valid routing for EWR-MUC-TLV bookable online but phone reps cannot find the same availability. Cant seem to replicate the MUC-TLV portion online either. Is there a better number than the US customer service line which seems to be German anyway?

Also wondering why NYC-MUC-TLV is 92k in J,  but if you split it up into NYC-MUC is 52k and MUC-TLV is 35k in J. with slightly more YQ.

My experience is that there can be phantom, but the lack of ability to find the second flight on its own is not proof that it is
HUCA a few times and ask them to search each leg individually (even though it's not showing for you that way)

searching on m&m website flights business from NY to TLV don't come up at all, but when I search separately each leg there is plenty of avail, is this new?

also the YQ on the NY-EU legs are over $500 pp, will that be the same YQ to TLV or will it be lower? i booked this a year ago YQ was around $250 each
Depends what airline. I had to call to book that route when I had the same problem.

You wont get Israel price in that direction but it should be one award. Just tell them you want NYC-TLV with a mixed cabin award. They were probably pricing as 2 awards one in F and the other in J.

So why not book separately for 87k?

I didn't book it yet just on hold, not sure if worth it the hassle of having it one 2 PNR's to save 10K miles...

Edit: Actually the 2nd leg (ZRH-TLV) is in economy since no J avail, so booking separate may be much fewer miles, however the YQ I believe will shoot up as JFK-ZRH shows $500 YQ pp on their site while JFK-ZRH-TLV was less than $300 YQ pp

After checking again it was $500 pp regardless even when booking TLV on the same PNR, so I booked similar option with United Miles instead for 85K pp no YQ but $550 total in fees (about $450 for the infant broken as $387 for the fare and $60 taxes)

These are the changes that will affect you, Mr. .....
As announced by the Lufthansa Group airlines in December, the way your award miles are calculated will change with effect from 12 March 2018. From that date onwards, your miles will be allocated based on the fare – i.e. the ticket price plus any surcharges levied by the respective airline. To calculate the number of award miles, the fare will be multiplied by a factor that is dependent on your frequent flyer status and the airline operating your flight.

In the first few weeks after this change, it is possible that your award miles will still be calculated based on the current system, i.e. by flight distance and booking class. If this is the case, we will make an adjustment after the last flight in your trip to compensate for the difference between the two calculation methods.

Please note: in the future, your award and status miles will be calculated in two different ways. As a result, they will appear with different figures in your Miles & More account statement.

Is there something you are still unsure about? On miles-and-more.com we have put together lots of helpful information for you that should answer all the essential questions about this change and about the future allocation of award miles.

Kind regards,

Your Miles & More Team

If its available yes. I had to call them last august to get me on a United flight. But lately United does show up on their site. Also, beware, they charge YQ on United too.
I meant to use United miles to book on LH.

Check LM and SQ. I'm beginning to think there is an issue with LH F showing on UA.

NYC-LAX

Also, is there any way to see if there is currently an expiration date tagged to my miles? Dan (https://www.dansdeals.com/points-travel/milespoints/mileage-expiration-guide-for-38-loyalty-programs-how-to-keep-your-points-from-expiring-and-how-to-bring-them-back-to-life-after-theyve-expired/) has written that "If you have a Miles & More credit card and use it monthly, then your miles will not expire." I have a card but haven't really used it???

Exactly, so it's 12k a flight. Which means for 50k you get 4.
Side note that post also has this:

USAirways has a very generous award chart:
-Domestic awards on USAirways flights are just 20,000 miles round-trip for cardholders thanks to the 5,000 mile discount.
-Off-peak coach awards to the Caribbean for cardholders are just 20,000 miles and to Europe or South America are just 30,000 miles round-trip if you fly on USAirways. Off peak First........

Book a flight as far out as you can -- cancel later and redeposit miles

will the cost to cancel be more than the value of the miles????-- you can only decide-not sure but I believe after you  cancel the miles will be good for another 3 months or so

Does anyone know if M&M will combine reservations?

I want to book NYC-WAW and WAW-TLV on the website in 2 diff classes, will they let me combine them on the same PNR after I book? for some reason trying to book it together makes it more expensive than booking separately

Also, if I book 1 passenger in J and one in PE, can I combine them later on the same PNR?

For some reason, I am having trouble with the phone agents getting this done, it would be much easier to do online and then combine later

Got it. they want extra 20K for booking it together. what issues can stem from booking each leg separately?   I am assuming at least the bags can be sent all the way?

Just realized that miles and more has completely redesigned their website
Even more what I just realize that they now allow to upgrade on partner operated flights including UA
For example farm New York City to Tel Aviv you need just 45K miles to upgrade from Economy  to Business That's more than the amount on United but you don't have to pay $600 with that amount of miles

The taxes were insane.
What's the pricing for an economy tix and taxes? Vs $500-$600 on taxes aside for the award ticket.
Don't have any miles in account now, otherwise would check on my own.

Not sure if it works with different classes, maybe in this case it's not showing for another reason (phantom?) but generally they'll have more availability.
