thanks..ill have to see if the wife is up to doin that...Might just catch some sun at the hotel and enjoy the heat in the winter...maybe drop by the casinos there.  The ATVing there is amazing for those that never tried it...probably most dangerous/fiun atving ive ever seen...

Tons of amazing hiking.
Joshua Tree.
Walking up Cahuilla Hills Dr is easy and breathtaking: http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/6652
Don't miss the Thursday night fair, etc.
There's a good outlet mall nearby.

Where are you staying?

It's supposed to be chilly in the summer up there.  Can't imagine what it will be in the winter.

I got it on Priceline 3 weeks ago.. I paid $70 (plus taxes)..

Depending on when you travel, your best bet might be to book w/priceline last minute. (other times when I booked in advance the deals weren't nearly as good, and I didn't get the hotels I wanted)

Then again, with PL there are never any guarantees...

Very recommended for August, as long as you enjoy 110° high temperatures.
Oh don't worry, it's a dry heat. ;)

My brother got one of these vouchers, where you get a weeks stay at various hotes for around $249-$399 for the week plus taxes (whatever that is). Of course places like the Pocanos and New hampshire are available now, and not in the summer, while places like Palm Springs, Brazil, Argentina are available only in the summer.
So you are saying that even though it's cheap, you gotta avoid Palm Springs in August, right?

did u have to add other areas of lesser star rating or did you get it right away?

thx!

August is hot, but bearable if you don't mind the heat.

The Westin is nice and has some beautiful grounds as well. Not quite as on par with the Hyatt, but still a nice property with 2 golf courses, a spa and other amenities. When I stayed there I did one of those crazy timeshare tours and picked up $100/pp Visa GC for going on the tour for the villa property next door. Not too bad.

I was there once in June and it was 112° and we walked to Shul on Shabbos for 20 minutes... Dry heat until you come inside to the AC, thats when you begin to drip...

I got it right away... my experience with priceline is pretty positive if you do it last minute... on the other hand I once mistakingly did it in advance and paid over double what I would have paid had I waited a few weeks...

Deepwell and Twin Palms are both within walking distance of the shul.  There are others as well, but it can be hard to know for sure if they're within walking distance without asking first.
You can search on VRBO.com among many other rental websites.

Thanks. Still no restaurant out there I take it.

I've stayed in the the Westin Mission Hills, as well as the La Quinta Resort. Both very nice, but the priority is having a private pool for the wife/kids, and also being near a Coffee Bean.

Plenty of coffee beans and kosher groceries, no restaurants, but I think you can order shabbos food and maybe other cooked food from Chabad.

HI all, it seems that for a short stay, a vacation rental doesn't add up, since there is typically a $250 cleaning fee that is irrespective of length of stay. Am I missing something? Can this be negotiated (I know the simple answer is yes but based on experience is that the case?)

i didnt do anything besides sleep there but i think there is atv'ing around there

It just depends how much you value having a full kitchen, private pool/hot tub with a walled in backyard, a pool table, etc, etc.

if it was a family affair or holiday rental, i'd go w/ the full house but for a quick trip the renassaince should do the job...good thing is that there is a coffee bean or two and they started serving more food items so at least there will be a normal breakfast.

You can also check out VRBO.com for home rentals. It might be cheaper since you are planning on staying for an extended time to get the villa the whole time at a one week rental rate.

If you're set on SPG though there are 2 Westin properties in the desert area that I know of off hand - Westin Mission Hills (hotel and villas) or Westin Desert Willow (villas only). I've stayed at the hotel and villa portion of the Mission Hills and thought that the villas were actually more useful. Never been to Desert Willow.

+1.
There are tons of awesome villas near either Chabad (Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage).  Just stay in one for a week and you'll save money.
No need for a hotel IMHO.

I didn't find any SPG hotel near the Chabad shul,  a villa I assume will cost me 200-300 a night and SPG will cost me 7-15k witch is much more worth, that's why during the week I want to stay at hotel and for shaboss in a villa close by to the chabad shul.

I searched for hours on vrbo.com and other sites too, I can't find anything cheaper than 275 per night, + cleaning fee and heating the pool fee,
Am I missing something ?

basically most villas close to Chabad are in the deppwell area, witch is VERY expensive....

The cheapest villa I was able to get is $1300 for 4 days. Incluuding tax and cleaning fee, not included $65 for pool heating each day.
Is this considered a good price ?

Just depends on the circumstances.  I've been to Palm Springs probably 8 times.  Fantastic winter destination.

Most of the times I fly CLE-LAX nonstop even though UA has seasonal flights to PSP via DEN or IAH. Though I have done ONT, PSP, and SNA connecting flights as well depending on the circumstances.
Total travel time can be less when flying nonstop to LAX and you can pickup provisions and go out to eat in LA.

The Westin is walking distance, as is the Marriott Shadow Ridge (to ChabadRM.com)...
Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, is also somewhat walking distance (http://www.hotwatercasino.com/)

So spend $700 for 3 nights in a small hotel room very far from shul or spend $1,000 for 3 nights in a large house just a few minutes from shul with a private walled in pool and hot tub.
Which part isn't adding up for you?

A more accurate analogy is a slice of pizza compared to a steak platter enough for 6-8 people.
I haven't seen that many 1 bedroom private villas With a private pool under 250-300 $ plus cleaning fee.
Most 1 bedrooms were condo w a community pool. For that I can go with SPg or Hyatt and get diamond upgrade to a suite... Of course get nights paid w points..
Am I missing something here?

Yes. It's a totally different experience. If you just can't afford it that's one thing. But to say it's comparable when you haven't done it is ludicrous. And yes you may have extra bedrooms. Who cares?
Plus being close to shul

The Hyatt Indian Wells is nice. Not sure what you mean by quiet. IMO, quiet means people don't stay there, so the hotel must not be nice. Most resorts don't have lots of noise going on.

villa was very nice, nice rooms too, classy; overall a great stay; but they should inform people of the 15 dollar daily parking fee beforehand not when I check in.

villas/hotel is in Rancho Mirage which is basically next town over but is NOT walking distance to palm springs chabad.   There is a Chabad House in Rancho Mirage as well that may be walking distance but minyan not steady at least on the weekday I was there.  Shabbat may be different but maybe best to call Rabbi at Rancho Mirage(search his number on web)

Going tonight to palm springs. Just for the 1 night. I have a lot of spg points so I want to use that. Any suggestions / recommendations of the 4 available places.
Le parker LA meridien.
Westin mission hills golf and spa. / and there villas.
Or the westin desert willow villa's. ?

Thanks for your reply.
I know the areas. I have been to palm springs 7 times. Always stayed at a vrbo home. But today I am going for only 1 night so its not שייך to rent a home for 1 night.
as I said I have spg points and I am a spg gold. Does this change your suggestion ?
I want to know which of the 4 properties I mentioned should I stay. ?
Also how do I book spg redemption? Should I book a Vila from the begening . or should I book a plain room and ask for a upgrade ?

Chabad of Rancho Mirage (chabadRm.com - 760-770-7785) is located approximately 30 minute walk to the Westin. There is also a Marriott (Shadow Ridge) which is approximately 20-30 minute walk too. There is usually a Minyan Sun (8), Mon and Thursday mornings (7) and on Shabbos, there's always the possibility of a daily Minyan, depending on guests. Yes there is an Ezras Noshim.
The BBQ takes place during the winter months, from 5:30-7:30 pm.

There is also a Kosher home (http://www.kosher-oasis.com), rented only to Frum people. It is less than a mile from the Shul.

I've read through this whole Thread including the Villa vs. Hotel discussion. What wasn't much discussed is the many cheap Motels/Hotels within minutes walking distance of Chabad, I was wondering if anyone has more info on any of them (See Photos).
To be More clear, I'm traveling on a tight budget (just me and my wife) and want to be Friday & Shabbos in PS, the cheapest Villa's are about $300 per night and have a 3 night min stay. A quick search on Orbitz gives me many cheap hotels, One example The Curve Palm Spring is a 3 Star Hotel for $65 a night (after applying promo code).

Just for Shabbos. I believe it's a better place to Spend the Shabbos than LA. I can take the Aerial Tramway Friday Morning then enjoy the Outdoors (air, scenic) over Shabbos.

You will find in the kosher aisle. The usual. Borsht. Kedem grape juice. Kedem Gefilte fish in a jar. Some chocolate. Osem soup mix. Every supermarket has kosher wine.

Last year I found in the freezer A&B gefilte fish. Empire chicken. Frozen pizza. A few meal mart TV dinners

Costco has Chalav Yisroel cheese, and some pre-cooked dishes (I believe Meal-Mart). Pavillions (Rancho Mirage) has a large Kosher selection, including baked goods. Albertsons also has a nice selection. Trader Joes, as mentioned, has a nice selection which includes meat products. And, as Dan mentioned, there's now http://kosherinpalmsprings.com.

Just a note, I found that the Ralph's at 1733 E Palm Canyon Dr to have all the main kosher food there. Small fridge section, small freezer section, and small regular section. They also have bread bought up from Schwartz bakery and other cookies and cake items there.

Yes there are other grocery stores that have kosher food sections but I found this store to have everything (for palm springs everything) and not have to go to another store or two.

ETA: Anyone interested in updating the wiki with the recent food talk?

Pics/review?

I should have taken pics - especially of the way it was so meticulously packaged. As an example, I ordered a burger and it came with a huge burger plus sauteed onions in an aluminum tin. Then there was a warm sliced bun - individually wrapped in its own plastic. There was another container with sliced pickles and tomatoes. Two smaller containers with ketchup and mayo. And a tupperware with a fresh salad (dressing on the side.)

That was just my meal - my wife had a similar array of items with hers.

The Burger was excellent and I would highly recommend. The owner mentioned that the eventual goal is to open a sit-down place and I hope he does because even one kosher rest. in the area would make vacationing there much more enjoyable and relaxing.

There is a chabad in Rancho mirage as well. I am Not sure if they have minyan for shabbos

Chabad of rancho is a long walk to The Ritz, and they don't have minyan Shabbos only in peak season, you gotta contact the rabbi

I am  going next week to PS  for the first time and I booked 3 hotels/villas and I need some help to decide which one to keep .

1) Marriott's Shadow Ridge I-The Villages (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ctdsr-marriotts-shadow-ridge-i-the-villages/)

 2) The Westin Mission Hills Resort Villas (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1369&language=en_US)

3) Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa (https://indianwells.regency.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html)

I will not be there for shabbos so I don't have to be close to a minyen . any advice would be appreciated , TIA

I've stayed at #2 as well, good sized rooms for your money and decent location. The property itself is a bit of a hassle because there are so many buildings and you can spend 5-10 minutes sometimes just driving from parking to the street.

None have indoor pools. Some spas have indoor hot tubs.

All the good ones have heated pools. Generally average high temperatures are in the mid-to-upper 70s and often 80s, but we've been having a cold and rainy spell.

Which areas should I be looking at to be close to a minyan? Are there gatherings of Jews there for Pesach as there is in Orlando? Any local resources for one stop kosher groceries?

Do you want a hotel or a villa? How much do you want to spend? Do you have kids? What type of amenities are important to you?

We live here. My wife and I and two small children do staycations all the time at all the resorts in the area. I've been to each and every one of them many times. We also go to some of them for just dinner or spa treatments.

Define "better"... what are you looking for and who are you traveling with and what do you want to do.?

La Quinta resort which is the Waldorf Astoria property is phenomenal. So is the Ritz-Carlton.

If you want an SPG property that is got a lot of old-time Palm Springs Flair to it than you want the Parker Palm Springs.

I'll give you the whole story!

I'm flying to SFO and was going to spend there  2 days and then drive the PCH to LA. on a Sun-Thur trip
Unfortunately, a big part of PCH is closed. Whether in SFO doesn't look too good for next week nether.

So I was going to do 1-2 days in SFO and fly to PSP. I have been to LAX and SAN. Im not a food person.

Going to drive back to LAX and spend a few hours before we leave.

There's stuff to do and see in PS midweek. I wouldn't recommend it for a person's first visit to SoCal, but if one has visited LA before then a couple days midweek in PS is fine.

I just went for a mid week stay last month.

We stayed in the Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage. We found it (like many other's in this thread) to be a great property.

There is a local Chabad in Rancho Mirage. They make a BBQ every Tuesday  during the winter.

Check beforehand about minyanim they don't always have. You can drive 20 min to Chabad in Palm springs for davening. 7 and 8 Shachris. Mincha and mariv 10 min b4 shkiya.

What activities if any did you do?

Joshua Tree NP is nearby and worth a day of sightseeing. I'd recommend sticking to the north half of the park as it has much more of the sights that are worth your time. If you really like hiking and have seen the major parts of the north half then explore the rest of the park (but that's multiple days, and really more time than most people would be interested in spending in that park).

Hiking in PS

A round of golf with Obama (I didn't actually go a round with him, but I thought there was a chance)

We went to Joshua Tree and Living desert.  I would not recommend Joshua tree if you have young kids with you. On the other hand Living Desert would be great for little ones.

We mostly stayed on the property as there was enough to keep us busy.

If anyone wants I have credit for these houses which are within walking distance to Chabad of Palm Springs, and can provide a discount off of the listed rates.

A private house with a pool in a walled in backyard, kitchen to warm up your BYOK, outdoor eating, walking distance to a great shul, close to downtown PS and the Thursday night festival, what's not to love?

You can check the available dates for each house on the calendar via the links below. PM if interested, thanks!

keep in mind perhaps kosher eating travelers come to Palm Springs more than SD in the winter

also not entirely accurate as the restaurant in the LA Jolla JCC has been there for at least 5+ years

We're both guessing, but I'd be surprised if that was true, once catered programs are removed from the equation.
JCC doesn't have the costs and overhead of a typical restaurant, and is very possibly partially funded by community organizations.

Why not try Googleing the address of the shul and the addresses of hotels in Google maps and see for yourself? I know you're new to the forums, but you get the best answers here (if any at all) if you ask questions you can not get the answers to from a quick Google search. If you can ask Google, please do.

"One- and Two-bedroom Bungalows also offer a gas fireplace, a full kitchen, a parlor, and a wet bar. "

But 1.3 miles from shul and no private pool like you would get with airbnb.

If it's not a franchise, it's no different than any other coffee bean in Southern California. The drinks are Kosher. The store itself does not have a hashgacha that is reliable.

Individual question but it had 2 sep sinks, ovens-(self clean) and most importantly micros -(easy to kasher) stocked with some basic kosher products. Had perculator for shbs, shbs lamps and some other features which the kosher traveler may appreciate. And of course a hefty kosher price  ;)

Each owner runs it differently. I've rented several and some make you fill out a detailed questionnaire...I know 1 owner who burns out the ovens after each stay but most don't. (I personally don't use the kitchens unless I know the owner)

Define close.
Also, willing to consider nearby Chabads?

Most places have self cleaning ovens and micros, just ask. Why pay a premium for that?
If you know the owner, it's worth it (*free*)

I don't really understand how a kosher villa works anyway. You trust everyone that ever stayed there to hold to your standards?
Separate sinks, dishes and utensils for milchig & fleishig, everything clearly labeled. A frum yid has a chezkas kashrus to follow instructions.

As well as Shabbos locks (no issues with electronic doors of physical keys)

Search VRBO or Airbnb by address?

How is the Chabad there now that Rabbi Denebeim isn't running it?
Rabbi Dennanbaum's son took over and he is really working it up , he bought a new beautiful spacious building for the shul and building a new mikva separate for women and men , and he is doing occasionally prepaid shabbos meals and plans to open a restaurant soon

My apologies. There are no *kosher* villas any longer.
The chabad rabbis has a few villas for rent , contact him directly

It's much nicer indeed, but the lack of Kosher restaurants is a pain.

Near Chabad of Rancho Mirage there are a few homes (non-kosher) available for rent on VRBO/AirBnB, as well as a few hotels within walking distance - between 1 and 2 miles (Marriott Shadow Ridge, the Westin, and Agua Caliente Resort (Westin villas are a little closer))

He only rented to people who kept kosher, and when requested, would kasher the kitchen before renting it out. His house wasn't too much more than any others in the neighborhood.
