Title: Wifi Extender for Optimum Wifi?
Post by: Thingywingy on November 30, 2014, 10:58:29 PM
Can a Wifi extender be setup for Optimum Wifi? or can it only be setup for a private network?

how would you enter you optimum login into it?

The same way you would enter your own network password? I have never setup a Wifi extender so I don't know. Are you saying that you don't think it can be done?

I don't think so because optimums login is a webpage not a router password

I have never setup a Wifi extender so I don't know. Are you saying that you don't think it can be done?

I'm not sure I was just wondering how you would get around that

This (http://classroom.synonym.com/wifi-extenders-boost-signal-open-wifi-area-16700.html) article seems to say that it can work...Anyone have experience doing this?

You can connect with your computer or phone and login, then change the WiFi MAC address of the extender/router to match the one that you logged in with.

I'm currently doing it with a simple router set as a repeater if you have auto login then your device will login automatically,  if not you will be prompted to enter login info. Since technically it's a public network you don't even need a password to logon with a repeater just a password to logon your device.
ETA: i dont know how secure it is for secure transactions.

You do this with Optimum? To clarify your saying you don't need to setup the router to a pick up the right network? You just have to set router as repeater? Is that a switch on the router? Any difference between router and extender for this purpose?

its set to log onto optimum which doesn't require a password to connect to the network once connected you need an optimum login

go to you routers web page, make sure it's set as a repeater, and search for available networks.

I want to use an obi with GV on optimum WiFi.
If I set up the router as a repeater like @moko, will it work with the obi? or does it have to be dchp to assign IP addresses which (cmiiw) the repeater doesn't do.

Would cloning the Mac address of the router (more complicated) for sure work?

So I followed  this (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/747884-How-to-use-an-Optimum-WiFi-hot-spot-with-multiple-computers)

Yay! My obi is working.

But for some reason, my devices (phone, computer) can not login to the SSID "MY REPEATER" that I set up.
Can anyone think of a reason why?
TIA!

Bump please?

The only difference between what I configured on my version of wrt, and these  instructions (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/747884-How-to-use-an-Optimum-WiFi-hot-spot-with-multiple-computers) are highlighted in the attached pics. (I dont have the option to select SSID enabled etc..)

My obi is working, and when I connect my computer with a wire to the router it also works. Why is the wireless network not working?
My devices are discovering the "GRAYEAGLE" network, but when I input the correct passphrase it doesn't connect.  :-\

@BAHayman your instructions seem more complicated. Do you disagree with Moko that it can be done straight?

That can work. My understanding is that the repeater becomes the client and will need to authenticate its MAC address, but I guess that the authentication prompts can pass through to the repeaters clients.

Not sure why it didn't work in my case. Could be because we were using enterprise routers and Optimum won't allow that range of MAC addresses to authenticate knowing that it is not a computer/phone.

Can an extender such as TP-LINK TL-WA850RE N300 (http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WA850RE-Universal-Wireless-Indicator/dp/B00E98O7GC/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1420602460&sr=1-1&keywords=wifi+extender) work for Optimum as well? Or do I need one that functions as a router as well? (I'm not sure where I picked it up that it shouldn't, and why? but I have that in my head).

Is a Network adapter like this Alfa AWUS036NH (http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-AWUS036NH-802-11g-Wireless-Long-Range/dp/B003YIFHJY/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1420603096&sr=1-4&keywords=wifi+antenna) a better option? I have little network experience, and am pretty confused by all the different kinds of devices available?

The extender will work, the ones that are the easiest you just select the network you want to extend from a drop down list, then you are good.

Mokos way doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm using a TP-link TL-WR940N. I tried following the instructions at http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=227. If I do it your way I guess step #4 & 5 will look different. What would I do differently?

For all those that want to do this, you don't need a router/ repeater etc. I just set up my obi200 on optimum WiFi with just an obi200 + obiwifi. See below for instructions.

Go to a location where you can connect your obi via cable to the router and via WiFi.
Set up the obi and connect via both the router and wifi.
You need to obtain the OBIWiFi MAC address, (not the obi200 Mac id) Here are the steps where it can be found:
***NOTE*** Be sure to have the Ethernet connection connected to your Router as well as the OBIWIFI USB device connected to the OBI USB Port prior to continuing. ***NOTE***

After running the normal setup *firmware update check (***6) etc..

At OBITALK.COM Sign in with your credentials - If you do not have a registered device - reg it on their site. Once in the OBITAlk.com site located the section "My OBi Endpoints" and select the device that you are configuring. Scroll down on the bottom of the page and locate "OBi Expert Configuration" - You will be prompted to continue and blah blah blah changes may cause device to not function if you do not know what your are doing... agree....

Continue and locate "Enter OBi Expert" button. Finally On the left side panel "Status" is among other sections of configurations Click on "System Status"; the right panel will display either:
1.) "Device is not online" See ***NOTE** above
or
2.) A display of the system configuration showing device information including the OBIWIFI MAC address.

After obtaining the OBIWIFI MAC address and configuring your filters on your router; you no longer need the Ethernet connection connected. Place your OBI Device anywhere in your house and enjoy. Don't forget to Enabling USB WIFI (*27) on device and configure it to connect to your home/office network.

Now you can go back home.
Go to optimum.com and add a device.
Put in the obiwifi mac ID where it says Mac ID, click other laptop.
Press *27 on the phone.
Follow the regular instructions to add a WiFi to the obiwifi.
Choose optimum WiFi.
No password.
Enjoy!!

Has anyone tried this above method? What's the latest Obi system to get for this to work? (And all I need is a plain computer screen?(meaning without any Internet) ,

Was this the same Obi which can be used for a free google voice phone number? (which was on ddms)?

I'm still using it.
I did it with the obi200.
You will need internet to set up the obi talk account and to access the obiwifi mac ID, as I wrote in the post.

Laptop same thing. Meaning to say not if he needs several devices or if he needs wifi for his phone.

If he has Optimum signal at his windows, with this long range antenna he'd most likely have it in middle of the basement too.

That's exactly what he needs, but how would I know to set this up? What would I have to do to take the signal and stretch it? How would I log into the wifi to cause the antennas to extend it further? Thanks yisroel.

There's no real setup to do (except at some PCs installing the drivers that come on a disk). This isn't an extender for the WiFi but a new WiFi card for his laptop which is long range and can pick up signals farther away.

You just plug it in to the USB port on the computer and it shows up as WiFi 2 under which you'll find all the networks it finds just like the normal WiFi connection of the PC.

That's amazing! That would work great for his PC, what about his cell phone is there anyway to actually pull the wifi deep into the basement where he can have the wifi work for his phone?

Would you know if T-mobile gives out a data extender box which would help boost the signal? (or a signal booster if that's what it's called?)

Not directly, but he can set up the laptop to share its WiFi connection through a mobile hotspot (in Windows 10 it's a simple setting, in older windows you need a software or command line commands and it might get somewhat complicated.)

I'm not personally familiar with tmobile, but IIRC this is one of the benefits they announced a while ago as part of the "uncarrier" announcements.

Actually got a hold of a twitter rep last night and spoke with them, explaining the problem, he told me the service in that whole area is very week and this week there working on adding some towers, and should the coverage not work after that or should things get delayed I will try to get you a signal extender(booster). Time will tell.. but for the laptop thanks though!

That's great. What if the laptop was registered with optimum to automatically login would it still be registered? I know with a WiFi extender it's not. Also if it does stay registered and you make the laptop into a hotspot would any device that I connect to that also be as if its registered?

For buisness plans they give one (usually for free) no questions asked for regular plans they'll probably drive you a little crazy then agree to give one... if your lucky you'll get away with just a deposit but most likely they'll charge you something for it

a registered laptop can be used as a hotspot to share that connection to other devices. (range would be its own issue)

I have a extender (TP-Link AC1200 Dual band wifi range extender) that's connected to a optimumwifi and my devices are connecting to the extender but can't seem to get Internet actually working... how do I sign in to optimum?
Probably no way to sign in manually. You'll need to add the extender's MAC address to the account for auto sign-in. And even then I'm not sure it will work.

I've all but given up on various wireless routers.

I recently installed a Ubiquity Wireless Access Point (Unifi AP-AC LR) which I picked up at Micro Center for under $100 and I get much better coverage and no drops.

Ubiquity is certainly a beast.

(Are you referring to the Optimum Public WiFi conversation? If yes, how would you get the Ubiquity to work with it?)

Not talking about public WiFi.

I guess if you wanted to use that you'd set up a DD-WRT router as a wifi client on optimumwifi and connect the Ubiquity AP to it using CAT5.

I find the optimum wifi as a whole somewhat unreliable, now try extending it and its even worse. Go for their 20/20 package.

The extender will work, the ones that are the easiest you just select the network you want to extend from a drop down list, then you are good.
From a long time ago but have you actually done this...

If he only uses one PC I'd go with a long-range antenna or his PC. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038Q4AIG/
There's a ton of diff options for such antennas can you recommend one that's under $20

I recommended a specific one which I used and it's great. The price for these aren't in the $20 range, show me one 9dBi USB WiFi antenna for under $30.

That is why I already recommended one that's good... 9dBi is the main thing to look here (this is the long range antenna that gives it the ability to get single from further than your computer can grab it), also, of course, it should be from a somewhat known brand.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but it seems to pick up fewer wifi signals than my built in wifi card... and optimum is not being picked up by the alfa only by the built in card (and when it is picked up it won't connect)

What @Yisroel Tech suggested upthread was to get a high gain wifi antenna that you attach to your pc... and you can turn the pc into a hotspot

Success!
I've managed to set this up with a netgear wifi extender. However I can only get my computer to sign in to optimum my galaxy s5 on the other hand won't load the optimum sign in page. If I manually put in the optimum log in page it comes up (as well as the main optimum site if I put that in) however I get a message that I need to b connected to optimum wifi to log in. My phones mac adress is already registered for auto log in, however when connected to the netgear extender my phone is saying sign in required but won't actually load the page. Any thoughts or ideas I can try?

So than there is a way, to set up your laptop/pc into a hotspot using the poor wifi connection you have thru the antenna.

Why are you saying it's not possible?

I am totally confused.

He was referring to using a wifi extender  to create a network or atleast a wifi connection through out your home, which I've since accomplished.

However @yisroel tech suggestion upthread about adding an antenna to your pc etc definitely should work although I personally was never able to get it to work..

The one issue which I'm having with the netgear is sometimes when trying to connect to it I'll get a failed to obtain ip adress which the tp link reportedly doesn't have an issue with. I'd assume that other models should work as well being I'd assume the firmware etc are similar however I tried a cheaper tp link (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N8ROH7G) that didn't work
I added it's mac adress to optimum although I'm pretty sure it's not necessary.
I set up the extender to connect to the strongest optimum network.
I connected my devices to the extender and the optimum sign in page came up in my browser.
Important note for some reason the mac adress of your device is recognized differently then when connecting this way vs straight to the optimum network. If you do auto sign in you'll need to do it twice and will be reconized as different devices.

If you have a spot in your home where there's a decent  amount of an Optimum signal, you could put a wifi extender there, and it will extend the signal further in to  your house.

that seems very simple just how do you manage to set up that connector?
Assuming he's asking do you need a computer where I'm going to plug it in or is it going to be plugged into the wall and how do I connect my wifi to the Optimum WiFi?...
If I remember correctly it was explained a bit up thread but since I do not remember so well I guess a reminder would be helpful. ;)

5ghz doesn't propagate as far as the lower frequencies, so even if it supports it, it may not reach him now.

Tysm! I couldn't for the life of me figure this out, why I suddenly lost the 2.4.. and my phone doesn't connect to the 5g. Besides for the fact that being as much weaker signal my extender can barely pick it up.
Why did they do this?

Same here, used to have pretty good reception, and for the last 2 weeks it's been either bad or non existent.

Quote from: https://www.howtogeek.com/222249/whats-the-difference-between-2.4-ghz-and-5-ghz-wi-fi-and-which-should-you-use/
The 2.4 GHz band is a pretty crowded place, because itís used by more than just Wi-Fi. Old cordless phones, garage door openers, baby monitors, and other devices tend to use the 2.4 GHz band. The longer waves used by the 2.4 GHz band are better suited to longer ranges and transmission through walls and solid objects.

The 5 GHz band is much less congested, which means you will likely get more stable connections. Youíll also see higher speeds. On the other hand, the shorter waves used by the 5 GHz band makes it less able to penetrate walls and solid objects. Itís also got a shorter effective range than the 2.4 GHz band.

Would that affect a galaxy s8 that has the 5 band? Besides the range issues..

I was afraid of that but my Nexus was picking up a beautiful signal and it was pretty quick I'm wondering if maybe it had to do with the less congested 5ghz band.. I'm hoping that a dual adapter (dongle)that comes with an antenna may actually be better then the internal wifi adapter in the laptop and maybe now I'll actually have better wifi than before!

I purchased this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00R92CL5E/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500174447&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=netgear+wifi+extender) netgear extender I know this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MR90E3A/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1500174622&sr=8-13&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=tp+link+wifi+extender) tp link will work as well.
How do I set up the extender to connect to optimum?

Same way that you'd set it up to extend any other network...

I tried setting it up and after setup it said "limited", basically meaning it didn't really connect to optimum. Does it matter that my laptop runs on 2.4 and optimum now on 5.8?

I don't know the answer to the second question. As far as the first means that you need to login to Optimum.. you can try opening your browser to a new webpage and see if it'll come up. It should open by itself.. what extender are you using?

Anyone else notice optimum hotspots in residential areas in nj seem to have changed bands from 2.4g to 5.8 my house which always had a hot spot disappeared and I heard from others saw online the same... My Nexus phone seems to pick it up I guess it's 5.8 compatible...buying a dual adapter for my computer hope that works...

oh!!! That's what it is. I have been using a usb long range wifi, and suddenly I lost all optimum wifis... Couldn't figure out what happened.

Can't imagine that's the problem you can create a 2.4 hotspot out of a 5.8... which your extender seems to be doing

Yeh I think the problem is just that the optimum wifi is too far away because of this new 5.8... is there any way to bring it closer?

If the issue is that the 5.8 is out of range then it definitly should, even if your laptop generally can't connect to 5.8 the antenna should also do the trick being that it's like a new wifi card.. this is all assuming the antenna can connect to 5.8...

The aforementioned Alfa antenna that I linked is only 2.4, so make sure to buy one that does have 5. There are some from Alfa.

So I followed  this (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/747884-How-to-use-an-Optimum-WiFi-hot-spot-with-multiple-computers)

Yay! My obi is working.

But for some reason, my devices (phone, computer) can not login to the SSID "MY REPEATER" that I set up.
Can anyone think of a reason why?
TIA!
I followed the linked instructions but had troube with step 4. There is no wireless mode "repeater". While OP writes that he is using DD-WRT v24 my router is using v3.0-r29396. I have a TP-Link WA901ND version3.

Would updating to this version (https://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads) work/help?

My father's laptop no longer connects with Optimum as of about 2 months ago, and now that I've read through this thread, I know why.
I think I need an antenna to  better catch the 5.8 that's outside his window. (My phone had optimum as a choice of wifi when standing outside.)
@Yisroel Tech or anyone else, can you recommend one?  Or tell me what to look for so I can shop for one? Sorry to bother you, but I don't know the difference between the $11.99 (https://www.amazon.com/ANEWKODI-AC600Mbps-Wireless-802-11ac-10-4-10-12/dp/B01LW442N4) one, and the $37.99  (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038Q4AIG)one.  I was going to buy the second one, but I think it's only 2.4 not dual or 5.8.
Or do I need something else entirely?
Thanks.

The first one is indeed dual-band but from a cheapo off-brand. The 2nd one is from a brand name and is very long range (and physically long) antenna and can possibly pick up a better signal, but is only 2.4 GHz.

The thing in the middle - and I would recommand this one - would be this dual-band one from Alfa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073X6RL9D

I don't want to get into the whole radiation debate because I don't know much about it, but you should realize that these antennas have an output power of 2000mW (2 watts) which really very high, so if you use it as your main internet and it's pretty close to you, then you might want to read up on the risks. I think the FCC legal limit is 1 watt for 2.4GHz.

If you're using this one in a while I wouldn't be so concerned, but if it's your regular internet connection it's something you should at least be aware of.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge can chime in.

Dad's laptop doesn't get Optimum signal anymore.
Tried Yisroel Tech's recommendation to get a dual-band antenna from Alfa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073X6RL9D (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073X6RL9D)

Unfortunately it only improves the signal to 'fair' in one side of the apartment and doesn't stay connected.

What do I try next?

I got the https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR90E3A  and it works!

Long version: The device has no wire- it's meant to be plugged right into the outlet. When I did that, it didn't improve the situation much. It's an old building with thick walls (and sometimes spotty cell service) so I used an extension cord and placed the device on the windowsill.  I'm not tech savvy enough, so I needed to call customer support  to walk me through the setup.   The device picks up  enough Optimum signal to repeat it throughout the apartment. We now have strong wifi!

Thank you @Yisroel Tech and everyone else who kibitz.

With optimum you need to login into access the internet. Usually that is done through the browser. How did you get this extender logged into optimum?
Also there many Wi-Fi extenders in Amazon in the $30 range. Does yours have some features that really make it worth $120?

Don't these all just resend the wifi signals it finds, so that your computer will know that optimum is there?
Then you logon as usual.

No, it doesn't. It connects to a particular WiFi and resends "its" signals.

@Eliyohu  What say you?
The extender is extending a particular signal that you connect it to. I don't understand how it works, however what it would seem to me is that optimum attempts to load the logon page on the extender as if it's the device your trying to use and based on the firmware of the particular extender it'll pass that on to your device. My hesitation with this reasoning is that adding the extenders MAC address to your Optimum account to automatically login doesn't help. The only thing it might be  part of a range of Mac addresses that they don't recognize.

I saw the TP-Link AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender RE450 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010S6SG3S?tag=thewire06-20&linkCode=xm2&ascsubtag=AgEAAAAAAAAAAI9-)  is recommended by WireCutter (https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-wi-fi-extender/). Have you tried this one? Is there some feature to look for that would allow you to login to Optimum?
I ended up ordering the RE650 (recommended by @ckmk47) from Amazon and set it up tonight. So far it's working great! My iffy connection of the last few weeks has been such a pain and I decided to spend the extra $50 for the better model.

Glad for you!
I didn't know what I was doing, either, but with help from @Eliyohu and @Yisroel Tech, I had enough confidence to buy something.  And it worked.

I have been using the TP Link extender for a couple of weeks without any  problem. Last week there was a storm and optimum went down. For some reason even since optimum is back up, I canít connect to the internet through the extender. If I go outside I can connect directly to the hotspot and inside I see ďOptimumĒ better no broadcast from the extender but I just canít connect to the internet...Any suggestions?

I wonder is this item can connect to optimum and then connect this to your own Router... People do this in hotels.

price showing at 70$ for me and seems comparable to the tp-link re650 mentioned earlier in this thread according to this site

https://analiti.com/compare/tp-link-re650.vs.netgear-ex7300.vs.linksys-re7000/

my question is will this router forward the cable wifi login page?

Recently I've set myself up using a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ and an Alfa AWUS036AC WiFi adapter with a 9dBi long-range antenna.

I did it just to play around with the Raspberry Pi as a toy...but it works pretty well...after some messing around.

(Used the wifi-to-wifi-route.sh script from here to set up the hotspot https://github.com/arpitjindal97/raspbian-recipes)

I purchased this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00R92CL5E/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500174447&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=netgear+wifi+extender) netgear extender I know this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MR90E3A/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1500174622&sr=8-13&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=tp+link+wifi+extender) tp link will work as well.
Trying to figure this out. How did you login to optimum on the extender? (I understood from this thread that adding the device ID on optimum website doesnít work).

Recently Auto sign-in doesn't work for connections through the extender.. so im not sure that would work anyways

You've made my father and me very happy.
Iíve been using this for many months with little interruption. Now the strangest thing has happened. When I connect to the extended network from my phone it works fine even when I turn off cellular data but I canít seem to get an internet connection from my laptop...? It shows how m connected but I get a yellow exclamation point on top of the WiFi icon or even when it goes away I just can access the web...any clue what could be going on?

Didn't read the entire thread.

Its possible to do by using router and formatting software to DD WRT with special configurations. Works well.

My Optimum extender is all set, but I like to boost the signal a bit.
Can someone recommend a Yagi Antenna that works with 5GHZ (unless a 2.4GHZ would also work to catch the optimum signal)?

Sorry Just saw this.

You need to buy a dual router that can be reconfigured with software called DD WRT. One antena will be used to receive Optimum and the other to redistribute. U still need a optimum log in and smart devices might not work.

No.
You need to install DD-WRT which can only be installed on a regular router. Once you install DD-WRT follow these instructions: https://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/747884-How-to-use-an-Optimum-WiFi-hot-spot-with-multiple-computers (https://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/747884-How-to-use-an-Optimum-WiFi-hot-spot-with-multiple-computers)

I have the Netgear R6700, which works well.
You can check here for a list of compatible routers:
(Just make sure that the one you buy supports 5 GHZ, since optimum stopped 2.4 GHZ).

Your connecting the extender to the optimum network,
When connected the login page will open on your device.

Most tp-link extenders will work

Here is my 5 cents. I tried this extender and it works very well!
1) It is working in repeating mode and suppose to drop speed by half, like any typical router, but it does not! Speed remains the same, I would connect to hot spot or I connect to extender.
2) I also noticed one thing. After white-listing Mac address of extender and connecting to it from your desktop you are redirected to optimum.net to register a device. Here is important to do whitelisting desktops in browser of mobile mode, it should not ask mac and should register your device as Iphone. Only in this scenario I have a stable internet on my desktop, otherwise I had reconnection problems each time.

Cheers!
