The ones that you buy here are only loaded with maps of North America.
So even if they would work, you would need new buy/upload new maps.
I dont know if this is even possible.

Anyone else?

Thanks!

Renting is costly, and pain in the neck to use. Igo has both israeli and usa maps.

IGO is a gps software, such as destinator, tomtom, garmin, etc. here the link to their site http://www.igomyway.com/en/

The official deal is to download it illegally, and crack for unlimited updates.

I once met an old man, who said his great grand father once met a peasant who said to have know someone who actually paid for this software.

Not sure I can believe it though...

I just googled it, to get you some sort of website supporting its existence.

I have it on a gps device, but together with a few other gps software in one, so that I get a menu when switching it on, asking which one I'd like.

do a little search on it, can not be complicated.

So any MIO would have Israel maps or would have the capability to have Israel maps downloaded to it?

Maybe in the USA, the new ones in europe or israel, you see all the lanes, and landmarks on the screen, etc.

I bought a Mio from Office Depot in Israel and had to return it.  It was not usable at all in English mode.  Street names and Points of interest were only able to be looked up if you know the exact spelling of the street and city in English and the spellings must have only been done by the most incompetent of people.

Maybe they have improved since then? Which model do you recommend?

I had installed on my gps both hebrew and english input, english input is a disaster, as the city Rechovot, is spelled Rekhovot, and so on.....

Post by: Dan on March 22, 2010, 07:25:13 PM
I used an old Mio a few years ago in Israel and the nice thing about it was you could type in "kever" and it displayed every kever in Israel.  The points of interest were awesome.

When I tried a newer Mio more recently the navigation was much improved, but you had to enter a city in order to display points of interest.  So you would have to enter "Kever" and then a cty to pull up any results.

And as you mentioned english input is an absolute disaster with the craziest spellings ever, and if you don't spell the city exactly as it is programmed you just get an error message.

usually you can leave the city blank, although he asks for it, and then it will slowly find them one by one according distance.

That's exactly how it was in a Mio model that I used in 2007, but in a 2009 Mio model if you didn't enter a POI or street with a city it gave an error message.

Superflyer,
look back at comment #15

Hey does anyone know of a gps system that works in the u.s. and israel?

The user who posted that was "yj"

I said see "MY" original post which was:
Old topic, but i need a gps in israel. Is it worth it to rent one from the car rental? Or is there a way around that? Can maps be downloaded to a gps i have already? I have a magellan maestro...

Thanks!

Does the name "yj" and "David" look so similar? I took the option of asking my question in a current thread rather than starting a new one. It helps to look at the dates and user names...

Regardless, thank you for responding. I am going to be in Israel for 10 days and if they charge $10 a day, its probably worth it to just buy one.

Where would you recommend purchasing this Mio? And which model should i be looking for?

I think around the $200 by "Bugs" it was a moov 400 or so.

Would the Mio MOOV 300 do just the same? i found it on amazon (used) for $80. Then i can just get the israel maps, right?

probably, but you would really need to know what you are doing !

In Israel an updated map is more crucial then anywhere else !

in that case, im probably better off buying one preloaded with israeli maps or just renting one.

Is the israel duty free shop the only way to get for cheap? i cant order one online somewhere with maps loaded?

Try a shop called space next to kikar hashabbes (on yecheskel, in a sous terrain). The boss there is called Moshe, you can say its his cousin that sent you. (The one that travels to israe constantly)

You've already gotten some great advice, I just figured I'd chime in.  I used my Mio C310x Digiwalker (bought in 2006 for $100 so you can probably find one real cheap now) and loaded the Israel maps onto it.  There's a googlepages forum on that device since it's very hackable with lots of people to help you out.

Best of luck!

I think i am going to buy one in the end...

In my searching for renting one, i found a place that has a feature on their units that routes you in a manner that you dont go through any Palestinian areas. Has anyone ever heard of this feature? seen it? know anything about it?
Does anyone know if i can download something somewhere which would do the same for me? I think im getting the mio moov 400.

thanks!

Would you remember the model numbers? Do you know if yours had those options installed specially?

Would a brand new one have those same features?

Ok, so i bought a Mio M400 on ebay for $100 that has maps for US, Canada, Israel, UK, and Australia.

He gave me options of which countries to put on...

I looked in all the settings and didnt see anything about avoiding PA areas. Would that be a setting that would pop up when i get to Israel?

Does anyone know how i can get that setting added? Perhaps download new maps?

I just rented the Garmin Nuvi 1310 and it was the best Israel GPS I've ever used. The street names don't have to be entered exactly, but at least a few letters need to be right. I didn't see if you could enter them in Hebrew which seems like a huge plus.
It spoke out the street names and has the easy to use Nuvi features!

Does anyone know if I buy it here, if  I can load North American maps on it when I go to the US?

Back to kvish 6, it can save you hours if you need those areas, remember that driving the israeli way, with an automatic, on israeli roads can cost you a lot of money too, so shorter might be a good idea.

Avis didn't have any and RentCenter by the King David which is the cheapest was also out, so I was forced to rent from GPS Express in the El Dan rent a car location (they have a stand there). Big rip-off (around 60 NIS) but I needed it last minute and didn't have a choice. However, for the Nuvi it might have been worth it anyways.

Super, seems like they only have it for iPhone for Israel, is that correct? I thought it was hard to crack iPhone software and can only be purchased from the iTunes store, but I'm not holding so much in Apple.

How is the POI search? Do you need to enter in a city for it to work?
And how is the English input on it?
Title: Re: gps systems that work in the u.s. and israel?
Post by: Yordai Dooma on April 12, 2010, 05:39:39 PM
english input is difficult at times, but it will find it if i put in the second word of the street or something like that.

Poi search is great. it has kosher and glatt kosher restaurants (its missing many of them). But the regualr POI search works pretty well. I put in heimish and heimishe essen in rechavia popped up. I put in gaucho and it found el gauchos in ramat gan (which was closed for yom hashoa :( )

You mean that until now there was no Garmin in Israel?
Also, alot has been written here about about the difficulty in typing english in israel. Does this have that issue, or can you spell Hebrew?

This was just released this past week for the first time ever.  Garmin has never had Israel maps before.

I don't have them so I can't tell you if they're any better than all of the other horrible Israel maps.

I think any gps in israel that is in english will have that issue. There are a million ways to spell these streets. Is it Echad or Ehad? Is it Petah tiqwa or petach tikva? Is it beitar illit or betar? Some of the mistakes my mio made were really stupid. Like kanfei mesharim (yes with an "m").

I thought it said it is Hebrew also:
•Displays roads and names in the Hebrew alphabet and is also available in English.
What do you think that means, that the GPS alphabet will come up as Hebrew?

Yes, you should be able to input hebrew or english letters.

I would call Garmin about that  because when I used the maps with the Nuvi 1310 I think the system language has to be Hebrew to do that- I don't think you can input hebrew when in English mode

Not yet, I would go for it. I've used the Israel version before and it's great. Only downside is it probably doesn't have alot of kevarim like other gps's and you may not be able to enter in hebrew when in english mode.
If you get it an it is able to be shared with two systems I'll split it with you $50/$50

It seems like you need an unlock code to use the map on the GPS and that is how they limit it to one device.

I'm sure they will.

Is seems that they are now backtracking. Seaching their website it now says:

"Question:  Why does City Navigator Israel not display correctly on my device?

 Answer:
City Navigator Israel is only compatible with the nuvi 1200, 1300, 1400, and 1600 series devices due to the Hebrew text used in the map. If you have purchased this product for a different device and you find that the map is not working correctly, please contact Product Support for a refund.
 Last modified on:  05/03/2010"

So I am wondering if anyone has tried it on a different device (like the 265 or 765 or whatever), and what happens? Is there only a small malfunction and still worth getting, or have they discovered that it's totally incompatible exept for the aforementioned devices?

Dan, if you got one, let us know next week please, when you arrive.

Gotta be careful using a GPS in Israel. An easy mistake like choosing Ramala instead of Ramla can get you in a sticky situation. Always best to check a street map first to get a general idea of where you're going.

Did the trick for us. Have no complaints. I haven't used it since...sitting around the house as i use Google maps on my bb here in the US. Would i recommend it? I paid $100 for it and would have paid more than that to rent one...so yes, id recommend it to someone in that scenario. Mine has POI's preloaded with shuls, kosher restaurants, glatt kosher restaurants. Obviously not up to date, but was nice.

Because it costs $99!!     Thats almost the cost of a new GPS. besides, I don't go to Israel often so it's not worth it to pay so much for the few days on my trip that I will need one.

just an fyi, i just bought the Garmin Cty Navigator NT for israel from amazon, and it looks like these are fully up to date, which is nice.

i was a little scared buying vs. renting because the sdcard maps may be old (pre-Jlem rail) since they are sold by 3rd parties cheap on amazon, but i bought with "memoryc" on Jan1 and when i popped it into my garmin 265w it showed the sdcard has a file called navigator israel ny 2013! wonder when they decide to call it 2013, and whether it is truly updated or they just changed the filename and sticker on top of the sdcard, but i guess i won;t know til i get to try it in israel. will try to give a full review when i get back.

Did u need it so fast so that's why u got it from memoryc? I see memoryc is amazon prime but there is also
Another seller not prime that advertises them as 2013 maps for $15 less...
Also, u should be able to go into settings then data then maps and click info to show what maps are currently installed. See if that says 2013 and let us know. Thanks

i'm 95% sure that's where i saw the map said 2013, was funny but when i plugged in card nothing happened so i searched through settings til i found that (too lazy to go back out to car to check now). but I'm kinda surprised since i odered it prime on jan 1 2013, how could it really be updated for 2013 so fast?

I didn't chec other members, just took the one that was on the front of the website, i rarely by from 3rd parties unless i have to, and prime makes a big diff since i'm leaving next week and wanted to make sure it works (though i now see i can't really actually try it out).

The fact that they call it 2013 doesn't mean it only becomes available when it's 2013
Same idea as buying a car in August 2012 and it's a 2013 model

cars are a little different, these maps dates really matter, and when u buy u can't get update for free. i guess you are right that it could be made and sold late 2012 for 2013, but i was just happy it didn't say 2011.

Is there any difference between getting the software loaded directly onto the device vs getting the sdcard?
Garmin charges 100 foe the direct load
Is it any faster navigating?

Was discussed by me and others on a different thread, no time to search for it right now - sometime over pesach if you want to check my posts

In short - you can set it not to take you into palestinian territories but that won't keep you out of the gush or otef yericho and stuff - look at a map before you go and figure out what roads you should and shouldn't take

nothing beats human, once you know where you want to go the GPS can assist you.

BTW a friend of my on  the way to NATBAG he drove into a Arab neighborhood his rented vehicle got stoned he hit the gas pedal and escaped,

he went to file a police report came late to the airport they refused to let him on the flight they closed the doors....., he made a B-A-L-E-G-A-N  "I came to your country, I got stoned ran for my life (he showed the police report), and now I'll miss my flight?!" they let him on :)

I used a garmin there (with maps plugin on sd card) and also got directed into places I didn't belong in. No better than waze.

I once walked from Jerusalem to one of the suburbs on י"ט שני I by mistake turned into the wrong street, I had 3 or 4 dogs chasing me, I continued thinking I"m on the right path, by the time I noticed I had to run towards the dogs to get back, I went to the security post and asked for help the dogs weren't to let go of me, he told me to throw some pebbles I said it's י"ט שני and for me it's muktza
It got more interesting from there…
Turns out though that he was interested in knowing about Judaism and asked about י"ט שני .

he handed me the gun "I can't do anything to them" I repeated it's muktza, he Nebach stood up from his comfortable chair and walked me down.

We rent out quality Garmin GPS units for israel, for a price much cheaper than the rental car companies. Pick up from Yerushalayim, Rechov Yirmiyahu, call 052-715-9609 from israel or American number: 1-917-809-4659 (please note that we are on israel time).

Many happy customers!
