Maybe we should start with a local one before trying to coordinate flights, hotels etc.

First let's do local.

Maybe Mountain Creek or Hunter.

Or Vermont which is better skiing but not quite as complicated to coordinate. A lil far for one day but doable for two

I think we need to see how a one day trip goes before we do anything longer.

Please double check T&C. IIRC, you can only use the card once a day; 3 different days.

Depending on how many times you've skied I think it's worth the extra hour I travel to go to Stratton. You get way longer runs on much better snow and a much better Park for the boarders. Leave at 5 am, daven on the way, ski like mad from 9-5, home by 10

Don't like sharing the mountain or riding with others?

What is the mountain like now after these warm days?

I spent last week at Okeemo Sunday,  Monday and Tuesday were great Wednesday by midday started getting a little slushy under the bright sun (I actually got sunburnt) but still wasn't too bad. I haven't gone this week though, this whole preparing for Pesach thing seems to be taking up all my time.

Stratton has a really solid student discount, so make sure to bring your ID if that's applicable. Something like half off. Also, you don't have to decide before you leave at the end of the day if you want to continue your rental the next day. They'll hold your skis until 10AM the next morning.

AFAIK the reduced mileage discount goes by leg, so unless you have your NYC airport on the list or do hidden city, you'll only get half the discount.

Uh oh. I hope that isn't the case. I need 2x3 days and it'll be ~$620 online for that.

It got brought up a while ago, but there's the 4 day local pass for $309 now. Has any non Utah resident had luck with that?

Looking forward to the Bistro and slope side sandwiches again :-)

If you are willing to drive a bit further, both Hunter and Windham are doing quite OK  and have ideal snowmaking conditions for the next few days.

Correct, but there are 3 decent mogul areas, and the double blacks are pretty challenging, very steep and fast.
(I have limited experience with mountains bigger than Hunter (1600 very ft), but hunters ratings are definitely skewed to the more challenging side from the mountains I've been to)

Define "turning trails"?
But overall it is pretty steep and narrow, with the exception of about 5-10 nice trails.

I wouldn't suggest going with your car to shachris, even if you can get your car out you might not be able to find a plowed parking space.

Mountain creek was awesome! Regular trails were powdery but nothing too major as they were groomed pretty well. The black diamonds were not groomed and was a lot of fun. Only annoying part was the ridiculous lines.

By I'm used to 5-10 minutes for the big lift at Hunter on weekends, curious how this compares.

I know, unfortunately.
Can you give more details?

My (relatively) cheap plan is to do mountain creek on Tuesdays, using the $25 lift ticket for students, and using the triple play card $109 for three lift tickets otherwise. Driving 2 hours each way sucks but is the cheap way. I purchased my own eqiup this season so at least I won't pay a ridiculous amount of money for low performance rentals. My main problem is finding who to go with, I don't like going with complete noobs. My main problem with your plan is that New year weekend would be packed, which means long waits in lifts.

With all that said, I am still interested, just need to find out the estimated price.

You need a $20 membership to buy it. Ruins the saving if you just buy it once.

I was told that it's actually very empty due to the partying and so on... Lol but this is the first time I've tried it so I can't say for sure... I got a 2day pass for 100$ it's prob a little more now... But it's far from lkwd (like 5 hours) but supposedly a very decent mountain. At this point 50% of the mountain is open and it looks like its going to get more very soon. U said I don't need rentals but if anyone else would like, I got a deal 50 for 2 days. Me and a bunch of other guys went, and we couldn't believe the prices , now looking back it makes sense a little bit because it's the only kosher place… But anyhow we all pretty much bought the cheapest thing which was a burger I don't have the exact price but somewhere around $30 for that by itself .

Yes they are open this year again. Changed names though, last year it was Prime at the canyons and now its Bistro Canyons Deli. Not sure if the menu has changed at all. Was there 3 years ago and it was a great experience to have a nice meal at a great place while on a skiing vacation.

If there are any gear heads out here looking for great deals on skis and boots see skatepro.com
They are located in Denmark, but they ship to the US for $19. They have amazing prices, nearly half on some stuff.

Btw if anyone wants a ride to mountain creek on Monday let me know, I have plenty of place. Conditions should be awesome after all the snow fall.

How does Mountain Creek compare with Hunter?
Hunter is further north so the snow is more natural and softer, mountain creek will have more ice patches, both pretty much the same skiing levels and similar price range. Only reason I'd go to mountain creek over hunter (or Windham) is it's 2 hrs closer to Nyc. (Just ftr there's always a bunch of potheads on hunter)

Mountain Creek has lots (for NY) of challenging terrain?

It doesn't seem like it from the trail map...

They do have a couple on bear peak, it's not exactly a huge mountain
They don't have lots of anything

Btw if anyone wants a ride to mountain creek on Monday let me know, I have plenty of place. Conditions should be awesome after all the snow fall.
I'm leaving there now, I had the same thought process, no such luck. They got a dusting over the weekend and it's all a big ice skating rink now. They're blowing snow all over.

The conditions were not bad at all. Just the mountain wasn't very challenging in general.

How much snow are they expecting?

Not too much, probably 2-3 inches, but its still nice to have some fresh stuff. The weather was also cold, and they were making a lot of snow.

You are welcome to come a long if you want.

Har sinai?  :D

But seriously probably the poconos are the closest (Camelback, Shawnee, Blue Mountain).

BTW, if anyone is interested, Chabad of Scranton offers discounted tickets to Montage Mountain, and kosher food on sundays at the lodge:
http://www.poconokosherski.com/
Montage is about 1/2 hour further out than Camelback from the NY area, but the skiing is nice, they have some challenging black diamonds, and there are no crowds.

Ended up in Hunter. They had a few cold days, and they redid the entire mountain. Conditions were great with about 6 inches of fresh man-maid snow. They even had amazing fresh and soft moguls on lower crossover (if you know the mountain). I was planning to go again on Monday, but it didn't workout. It looks like its finally cooling back off; it should be cold throughout the next week. I am planning to go twice next week.

Went to Hunter on Wednesday. They had nearly 3 feet of fresh powder and nearly the entire mountain was left ungroomed. The season is far from over. I am going again on Sunday and probably have some place if anyone wants to join.

Your definitely a big time skier, I wouldn't mind a few good lessons from you! Until when can one go skiing here in ny/pa/nj?

I did get some nice amount of skiing, but don't jump to major conclusions. : )
Hunter should stay open until April 2 (closing Monday and Tuesday this week and next week), but we are talking about skiing slush. I personally find slush fun and easy to learn on because it naturally slows you down, boosting your confidence, its soft and easy to edge, and it absorbs impact better than "hard" hardpack if you fall.
Depending on your level I can probably give some lessons, PM me if you are serious.

I am probably going to Hunter on Wednesday, either driving or taking the NJ ski bums bus. You are welcome to join me either way, with lessons or without.

I learned to ski at Bellayre and highly recommend it. It's much less crowded than its flashy neighbor Hunter, and much more down-to-earth and friendly. I did their 3-day beginner program, and 2 of the 3 days my "group lesson" was private.

I have a great private instructor hired to work with me and my kids this Thursday for the full day. But we already have basic skills on one level or another. Would love if somebody would take a couple of the hours as I think 2-3 hours will be more than enough for us. PM if ur interested.

My advice, check the weather and go to the most promising for that.
I've gone to SLC and den but some crappy mountain in NY was in a way better because there was much more fresh powder. I remember in SLC I was going down ice most of the time...

Denver is a no go... There is a single highway from the airport/city to ANY ski resort, so there is always tons traffic.

3-4 hours of it on a snow day, and it shuts down often enough.
