Title: Best of DDF
Post by: Yehuda57 on June 29, 2015, 10:53:40 AM
With so much happening on DDF, there are likely many gems that you missed because you weren't following that specific thread. Well I say, "no more!" If you come across a post that you feel deserves a wider audience, whether it was very informative, funny, or deserving of being highlighted for any other reason, post it here.

A few proposed rules:

1) You cannot submit your own posts.
2) Provide necessary context.
3) Quote properly and provide links. Don't say, "Yo, check out Dan's post about RC. It's friggin awesome."
4) Let the person know in the original thread they've been "Best Ofed"
5) This thread is only for DDF. One liners, articles, pictures and videos etc. from outside DDF all have their own threads already.

You actually broke 4 out 5 rules. >:(

Do it like so:

Chaim Moskowitz shares a story about buying gift cards:

True story. I am buying GC's yesterday and there is a guy buying beer in a straw skirt and bikini top. I said to him let me guess you are either going to a Hawaiian party or celebrating the landmark decision. He replied no I am going to the Jimmy Buffett concert. Open mouth and insert foot.  :-[

Ok here's the first real one that abides by the rules.
Chaim Moskowitz, posting the first post on a new thread, breaks 4 out of the 5 rules, while claiming to break only 1.  ;D

Let me be the first to break rule #1.  :)

http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=7518.msg1189398#msg1189398

And OP good idea btw.

@ilherman correctly predicts the outcome of a Mileage Plus Account audit due to churning, with implications for all MP churners.

I think you'll be fine. Chase was in terrible pain that someone played around with them so they called up UA to take care of you since on their end they can not do anything, UA as a brother in law from Chase promptly suspended your account. I think that when UA will look into this matter they will see that you did not violate any T&C and they will reopen the account.
Final resolution.
1. Mileage plus send email that, I opened XX accounts. It should be only 1 account per customer. So I need to be careful with it. Can't keep on opening more accounts. No mention of churning of cards or anything ...
2. Merged both accounts and opened it back to me in my original account with larger miles. I can now use my miles.
3. Nothing done by chase, other than turning me in to mileage plus and making me go thru the hassle for last few weeks. All my cards are open. They never closed anything. I am now going to close some to churn few more cards.

In nutshell- no damage done, after all the drama. Churning continues.

@Something Fishy deserves to be Best Ofed 1000 times over for his 10 part TR, not least for the detailed, yet easy to read writing, helpfulness in answering follow up questions in the thread, and his <insert adjective here> photography. But then he had to go and add this MMS parody as the most delicious cherry on top:

Now that I've written a 10-part trip report, it's only fitting that I pay tribute to the giants who came before me. So in honor of the great inventor of splitting a TR into a Million Mediocre Sections, I present the final piece of my saga:

Conclusion and Blog GiveawayTM:

<Template 186>

My wife and I used our points and miles to plan a trip to Maui (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=46759.0)! We also used a price mistake!

We had heard that Maui rivals the beauty and splendor of Staten Island, so we planned a trip to decide for ourselves (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=46759.0)!

Maui is very pretty!

The highlight of our trip to Maui was seeing and doing all the things (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=46759.0)! Also Lanai (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=46759.0)!

We went to the beach. It was nice. The water was warm, but not warmer than you would expect. Also not colder than you would expect. There were lots of rocks.

ETA: I see yuneeq beat me to it. ;-)

Would you say the correct term is apropos?

That would work. Irony does not mean "neat/cool coincidence." Ironic would be me being against this thread, and then getting excited about having a post of mine added to it.

@Shoobi: sorry if it seems I'm bashing you when you were saying kind things about me, (how's that for irony?) but them be the rules of online discussion: Must. Be. Grammar. Nazi. Oh, and write in one word sentences.

@Something Fishy at it again. Here is is giving a photography lesson while critiquing Ergel's photos in his inimitable style.
Fantastic shot. A perfect example of capturing the moment; you've made a great image in hard conditions. The light is flat and boring, and focus missed the mountain goat and hit the background instead. Even so, the picture is extremely compelling. There's great movement (the goat's in mid leap), as well as tension (How high is he? Will he jump? Is there a cliff on the other side?). The background has a million interesting details to explore, making it a very interesting scene. The more I look at it the more details I discover - my eye goes from the initial "wow - look at that goat!" to more intricate details and observations...

Go read the rest of it.

Incredible ongoing Kenya TR by @Shunts (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=54067.0)

For example:

Part 3
...We arrived at the airstrip and waited for our plane to arrive. Our scheduled departure time of 10:15 came and went and there was still no plane in sight. We were in Africa after all, and thus the realization that the possibility of the plane not showing up at all was real and that we may be forced to develop alternative Plans for Shabbos.
Our fears evaporated when a few minutes later a gleaming airplane came in for a landing. Flying time would be twenty five minutes to the Masai Mara Oleski airstrip. It was nice to experience a plane making a special pickup just for you. The gate was locked, so we had to wait for the gate keeper who arrived by bike to open the airport.

Anyone want to give a tutorial how to successfully assemble one that stays taut and doesn't gather water?  (We had a rather spectacular collapse one year.) Do you string the tarp or use shower curtain hooks?

Hehehehe. A chassidish looking guy is asking the receptionist every single angle. "What if my brother has a platinum and I have an uber but my sister in law is in LGA". and "Will uber or Amex know if I try to use multiple codes? How can they stop me?"

Every non jew takes a card and says, "Wow, thanks for this!" and walks away.
Must be Chapshnell who just got to LGA.  ;D

Ok everyone, I wrote this press release.

I just did it so that everyone think a little bit of what we're doing, and what the consequences might be.

Not saying the FBI will land helicopters in your backyard because of PGGM or a fake AU, but a crime is a crime.
So if you get in trouble for something unrelated, they start looking after everything you did - and it all adds up.

Bank fraud carries 30 years behind bars regardless of the amount involved.

Faking a AU is bank fraud regardless of whether you did it for small business Saturday or to get a $10 million loan: you provided false information for a lender with the intention to defraud them.

Providing false income information when applying for a loan is bank fraud - it doesn't matter if it's a stupid credit card application or a $5 million mortgage.

It's about time to put a little though into all this.

Agree with you 100%! It's chulent!

According to Scripps National Spelling Bee as aired on ESPN a few years ago when this word was asked in the finals, the correct spelling is CHOLENT.

Meanwhile, I am in Zambia for the past week, and a Zambian dude approached me in the supermarket and offered me rough diamonds from Angola. He tells me "I can trust you with a sample, I can give you a sample rough one or the cut and polished one already."

Now, I know absolutely nothing about diamonds, other than that there is such a thing as Kimberley Process certificates and blood diamonds. I wouldn't take a risk either way, but anyways I messaged my friend in the industry, and he replies, "We don't do rough. I would NOT get involved in any way. Makes no difference what guy says. You can get arrested and thrown in jail. You can get in big trouble for even touching a diamond. People can be looking at videos. Stay away. Rob banks if you must."

FTFY:

More than his encyclopedic knowledge of all things mileage and travel, and his incredible ability to dumb down and explain even the most complex redemptions to ensure anyone can take advantage of a good deal, I most respect @Dan for his positivity, mentchlichkeit and the way he deals with "haters".

As someone who put himself out there with a real name and picture, he's had to deal with everything from mild critique to hate-mail in a very public way. Some of the comments on the site and forum are downright creepy. Yet he's handled it all in the classiest way. I think this is a a huge testament to you and how he was raised.

So while we're all singing JJ's praises, L'chaim to you, and keep on enjoying the tremendous nachas I'm sure you are having.

When I look at the “common sense” that prevails outside of religion I see where that common sense leads to: broken homes, dysfunction, billions of people behaving as if in a rat race with little purpose in life, rampant depression and despair, widespread opioid and other drug abuse to escape the meaningless life people lead, and callousness towards human life in general. That’s  just the tip of the iceberg.

Common sense is wildly subjective. Not too long ago it meant enslaving all the blacks, letting the poor starve, or throwing them in debtors prisons, etc. “common sense” now includes forcing 5 year olds to learn about deviant lifestyles, and euthanasia for teens who are fed up with life- against their parents wishes- in many European countries.
I’ll take my religion any day. Thank you.

It's a major split in Chabad, and the bitter fight has been going on for years.

There are basically two camps. The first, and the one one that most Israelis fall into, especially those from Tzfat, sings, "v'AD ziknah ani hu."
The second, and the one that most Americans fall into, sings, "v'ad zikNAH ani hu"

I'm shocked that Yoni sings it the way he does in the video. I would never imagine him to be such a traitor.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this campaign, and especially to @aygart and @12HRS for matching!
There was no simple way to calculate it all, but we settled on a formula that recognized $1612 in donations, which all three of us matched (despite our original commitment of $1000). So that is a total of $6448 - in 2 days.

How about PMing it to veterans only. And a "veteran" starts at +290 posts... ;D

On a different note, I don't think we have to go crazy about SD. Being a DD, or a FTaler, is not about landing on the right page, it's a mentality. How many friends did you talk to that gave you the looks when you told them what you do! The fact is that most people would not call again, or even call in the first place.
To spell it out even more, consider the following necessities to be a good DD:
1. Have good credit,
2. Be extremely organized,
3. Be able to spend thousands of dollars,
4. Not suffer from an overdose of superstitious'ness thereby being able to realize that accepting bonuses is not first degree murder,
5. Have the guts to call,
6. Have the guts to call again,
7. To be able to learn and retain lots of information
8. To not feel bad for credit card companies.

And the list goes on.
this
and especially these
4. Not suffer from an overdose of superstitious'ness thereby being able to realize that accepting bonuses is not first degree murder,
5. Have the guts to call,
6. Have the guts to call again,
8. To not feel bad for credit card companies.

When you first open a bottle of soda or seltzer or pop, begin by slowly turning the cap one-quarter turn and wait about 10 seconds, watching for the small bubbles to slow down, and listening as the sssst of escaping gas gets quieter.  Then turn another 1/4 turn, and wait another 10 seconds till it quiets down.  Now open the cap the rest of the way, and look proudly around as you pour a perfect cup.  Don't expect a pat on the back, though, because nobody will realize what didn't happen.  But you'll know.

Because one day, soon we hope, you'll be at a shul kiddush, balancing a full bowl of aromatic chulent or chili or Hungarian goulash in one hand, and an empty cup in the other, and someone will offer to pour you a drink, and he'll twist that cap quickly, in one fell swoop, and you'll watch as the bottle suddenly erupts, and fizzy, bubbly liquid streams downward, over his greasy hands into your still-untouched chulent or chili or Hungarian goulash, filling the bowl with what now looks like brown soup, which overflows the rim and drips downwards onto your Shabbos shoes, and you'll look up as he sheepishly mumbles "Sorry!  Someone must have shaken the bottle" and you'll think NO, YOU DOOFUS!!!  DON'T BLAME SOMEONE ELSE!  ADMIT THAT YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO OPEN A BOTTLE OF SODA! but you won't say that, of course, you'll just smile kindly and say "It's nothing, I'll get another bowl" and you'll return to the table, only to discover that the pan has now been totally emptied of its chulent or chili or Hungarian goulash, and you'll just sigh.  How could he know?  He's not a DDFer.

People need to give themselves permission to reevaluate the situation no matter how firmly they may have dug their heels in.

If your closely held beliefs are out of touch with reality and if hearing anything to the contrary makes you mad and causes you to become overly defensive and aggressive about your position, take a deep calming breath and allow new information to enter your brain. Nobody will judge you for changing your mind due to changing circumstances.
