Title: Ask AJ Edelman Anything: DDF Member And Member Of The 2018 Israel Olympic Team!
Post by: hgeek23 on August 10, 2015, 11:21:55 PM
Hi guys,
Shameless but necessary plug.
My name is AJ Edelman, Israel's national skeleton athlete and longtime DD user.  I am training to try and qualify Israel for the 2018 Olympic winter games.
My indiegogo campaign just launched, and if you've been trying to hit some spend on your CCs while getting a tax deduction this might be a good opportunity.
Check out the campaign and videos:
indiegogo: IsraelSkeleton.com/go (http://IsraelSkeleton.com/go)

Any suggestions on making the campaign a success would be most appreciated as well.
Thanks!

Is this truly tax deductible?  The IGG campaign gives no such indication AFAICT.

it's a 501c3.  You can see on the side of the page below the progress link "verified nonprofit".  Israel Bobsled and Skeleton Federation is a 501C3 nonprofit
I am attempting to one day be Israel's first medalist while wearing shoes, as the only prior medalists have medaled in sports while barefoot (sailing, judo, canoeing).

Thanks much!
Even without financial support, just getting the word out that it's possible and we're trying to get it done is most helpful.
Need more Jews in winter sports!

The "ice" scene was originally supposed to have been shot in Israel.
However the cost of hiring an Israeli videographer and transporting the practice sled proved too much and so ultimately it was shot overlooking the beautiful (?) hills of Marin County, California, close to where I train.

Is that what Israel is missing? Olympic games?!

I'm curious, and I'm sorry to go off topic but we don't often get access to a potential Olympian.  Is anyone allowed to represent whichever country they want? There are no requirements that you have to live in Israel in order to represent Israel?

This is turning into a DDF AMA. Spelling of which, you may want to consider an actual AMA. You have an interesting story and it will definitely help your fundraising.

In short, yes. Israel, and the Jewish community in particular, is missing more proud Jewish athletes which act as ambassadors of our communities, people, and homeland.

I have been planning Aliyah for a while.  I needed to make sure that when I do my service it doesn't conflict with training.  the requirements from the Israel NOC are citizenship 1 year before the Games.
I will likely be making Aliyah later this year, after the 2015/16 season, and I believe I will be granted some kind of athletes deferral, with shortened upfront service.  I spoke to people familiar with the decision making process on this.

This is a good point.  All too often we see Jews and Israelis in the newspaper for the wrong reasons.  This is a great way to represent your people and country doing something positive.  Kudos!

Ever since I was a kid I considered myself a half-geek, since I was into computers and nerdy stuff (I play the points/miles game and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering after all), but was an athlete.  So hgeek was supposed to be short for half-geek.

any idea what time your event is? NBC's schedule has the (qualifying round ?) as 8-11pm on 2/14 and gold medal at 8-1230am on 2/15

Out of curiosity (and no disrespect meant at all!) how do your times compare to the best in the world currently/world records?

No offense taken. Skeleton is 4 heats over 2 days. 2 heats per day. Top 20 are allowed to complete the second heat of day 2.
In terms of times, Skeleton is one of the hardest sports in the Olympics to Qualify for as it is limited to 30 Athletes of about 16 Nations. In 4 years with no coach and no funding whatsoever from the Israeli govt (hence unable to afford a coach), we've qualified. We are not in medal position. About a couple seconds back per run. Most of this is due to the sprinting start, as I am a terrific driver, but not a good sprinter. However, we are the only one at these games to have qualified in 4 years with no coaching, and no support, a task said to be impossible for us a few years ago. The qualification itself was a massive achievement, as we bested 14 other nations in rank to gain our spot. I'll be looking to beat a few more Nations in the games but we are not medal contenders (it will go Korea, Latvia, Germany likely, in that order).

Amazing accomplishment!  When you say "we" do you mean that all 10 of the Israeli athletes are in the same situation, not receiving support?  Does the Israeli OC only support summer olympians?

I believe they receive a measure of funding, I'm not sure how much. It would be different for each athlete based on results or olympics appearances, and obviously figure skating has a budget as a program in general, whereby skeleton does not receive a budget.
By "we" I meant that I owe Israel everything, and act on behalf of the country and people. And so I refer to the accomplishment as Israel's, not my own.

This is why the Korean will win gold, a Canadian won gold in Vancouver, USA won gold in salt lake. I get to go 10 runs before race day. The Korean will have hundreds.
It's also why not having a coach is such an issue, the other teams will have a support staff of many people, videoing and providing real time input on how to drive the track (we steer or we die, it's hard to see but we do a lot of steering). I'll have to learn it on the fly. But that's why we've made the games--its always been a trial by fire, do or die issue. Be good or go home.

I am curious what it would take to step up your "sprinting" game?

I am sure you've spend loads and loads of time practicing, so what are you missing?

Does watching footage of others help?

Thanks and good luck!!

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm going to make an AMA after this one I think.
I came from ice hockey. Hard as it is to think about, running and sprinting are two acquired skills over years. If you don't do track and field you likely don't know how to Sprint. I'm the same way. I've worked over 4 years to bring my 30m Sprint time down by over a half second. It takes years of practice under good coaches and weightlifting programs. The weightlifting has never been my problem but the technique of sprinting has. So repeated work under a real good Sprint coach helps. Of the 3 off-seasons I've had to work on sprinting, most coaches couldn't handle someone my age who didn't have proper mechanics. As such they couldn't rectify the base issues, instead only treating the low hanging fruit. Now that I know the ropes if I had another 4 years I could bring it to a top contender level. But such is life. Hashem has a plan, this is how it's worked out, and I'm happy he's helped me get this far.
One tenth deficit on the Sprint is worth 3 tenths of driving. So I had to learn quickly how to drive better than others.

Wow. That's pretty crazy. And I see a Russian won gold in Russia too (before having it vacated).

Seems like the Latvian dude was dominant, but hasn't struck Olympic gold because the home field advantage seems to put the local contender over the top every time. Though the Korean is in first place for this years World Cup, so not sure how much home field advantage he'd need anyway.

Martins grew up at the Latvian track and has done the sport since he was little. He was disqualified at a competition this year and lost major world cup points for it. I have no doubt the home track advantage will play heavily to Yun"'s favor.

This is so cool! congrats @hgeek23
make us all proud to know you...as DDFers, oh- and as jews.
the way i read the schedule, will it be 8pm EST on both 2/14 and 2/15?

Both heats are run with about a 45 minute break between the two. I'm not sure how NBC handles the timing though. Unfortunately.

It's a seriously good question. Doping is huge. There's 2 kinds in our sport. Equipment doping is a huge issue whereby athletes can use coatings or steel on the blades that is illegal.
Doping with drugs is also hugely problematic and provides an advantage at the start. I would never dope, it's just not worth the long term Effects, though it would be a massive help for sure.  But my role as an Israeli athlete guides most of my decisions. Doping is a selfish decision. I represent our people and would never risk losing their placement for something so selfish.

Unless you're Russian. Then you wouldn't be representing your people if you didn't dope. ;D

The blades aren't steel? What are they
The blades are a 316L stainless steel provided by Kohler, with a maximum hardness brinnell 280. However if you can modify the steel to be harder it's a huge advantage since under the 5 gforces they'll bend less, and therefore cause less friction. My runners have always tested very low at 220 brinnell or so, so runner doping hurts me very much.

What makes yours only 220? Is it just a question of purchasing enough runners until you find one that is 280?

Yes.
But the runner makers, of which there are three people who really make runners, might provide the higher hardness sets to larger Nations they have contracts with or who spend more money.

Runners are not just steel, they have a cutting blade for half the length. We balance like a rocking chair on a small few mm part of the runner between the round portion and the cutting knife portion. Too far forward balancing on the round and we skid sideways. Too far backwards on the knife we cut too much ice and go slowly.
Here you see the blade portion:
We have different runners for each ice condition and temperature. Deeper grooves and thinner cutting knives for more control, and wider knives for less control. In the picture you can see the cutting knife, and on each side are cut-out grooves. I personally have about 10 different sets. I use a wide spine and shallow grooves when it's warm (so it doesn't cut too much), etc etc.

Haha, much appreciated.
On another note, someone reached out via my website and asked about if I had any advice as it relates to yids/Israel. I told them I'd put it in the DDF post. I'd say the following.
When I started this 4 years ago Israel was told that I could never make the games, as I couldn't Sprint. Not in 4 years, not in 8. I was also told to my face that Jews don't do sports. That's bs.
I thought "Jews can do anything they want. No one tells me what I can do. " So I made it my goal to do it. Jews have a ton of chutzpah and that should be embraced. Jews and Israelis can do anything.
From the grapevine had a part of that written up.

Bobsled is a team sport. Asking other Israelis/Jews to spend their life's savings for 8 years, throw away their careers, and go from wet/cold/anti-Semitic towns to other wet/cold/anti-Semitic towns, without any income... Wasn't going to happen.  There was also something alluring about finishing it on my own. Proving it could happen.
Plus skeleton at 40k/year was half the cost, haha.

Shimshon would have had to suffer the indignity in that moment of probably being stripped of his clothing. And he was a strong dude (with amazing hair, presumably) so I think the portrayal isn't so bad 😊
Besides, yidden can be strong muscular guys, why not.

I'm not sure how much of that amazing hair was left at the time he brought the house down, but this is a depiction that just about anybody should understand with needing any explanations.

For some reason i kinda doubt depicting him with a shtreimel and peyos would quite work so well.

Everyone's excited. Village isn't full yet. More athletes trickling in.

Kosher food--no kosher food provided, so I'm sticking to smoked salmon, my protein powder, veggies, and the fruit, both dry and fresh.

Super cool and Good luck, I'll be rooting for you! Quick question and probably a stupid one. You mentioned that you need improvement with sprinting, if so why would you not then compete in Luge that does not require the sprint start? I know that luge is different in the fact that you are on your back but are the steering skills similar.......

The steering mechanisms are completely different on the sleds. Luge athletes start far younger than skeleton. They require more of a feeling of the track sometimes so it helps to start younger.

Definitely not in the village.

All athletes are in the village, no one is separate.  each country and delegation has their own apartments here--Israel having 2 athletes in the mountain competitions (one alpine, one skeleton), we are in just one apartment, while some countries have a dozen floors full of apartments.
Negative comments from other athletes--over the course of skeleton have heard a lot, and lots of stereotypes.  But that's my job--to combat that, and change perceptions of jews.

Since he cannot answer, we will have to wait and see if he uses it or not....

I'm not saying it wasn't a compliment but how does that change my point?
All the athletes before AJ he mentioned what country they're representing plus whatever other info he gave about them, it just seemed odd to me that suddenly when it came to Israel he didn't mention it. Especially considering that you would think that just the fact that there's even an Israeli "team" should be newsworthy in of itself... Although in his defense he did mention that he didn't stick with bobsled because he couldn't find any Israeli teammates...

The funny thing I'm usually the last one to jump to antisemitism

This is why the Korean will win gold, a Canadian won gold in Vancouver, USA won gold in salt lake. I get to go 10 runs before race day. The Korean will have hundreds.
It's also why not having a coach is such an issue, the other teams will have a support staff of many people, videoing and providing real time input on how to drive the track (we steer or we die, it's hard to see but we do a lot of steering). I'll have to learn it on the fly. But that's why we've made the games--its always been a trial by fire, do or die issue. Be good or go home.

From what I saw, the Korean had the fastest sprint by far and probably affected the final results more than home court advantage, no?

Yes. The track is very short, only 1.375km. The start deficit is magnified by 3x based on this, approximately. The push is amazingly important, but home advantage is just as big. He would know the pressures, curves, equipment setup that is perfect for the air and ice temperatures, etc.

Would you say that most crashes/bangs are because of lack of experience/skill or rather the athletes at the back of the pack are trying to catch up which leads to riskier steering?

Also, is there a difference in the track if you go first or last? I would think the slit of ice at the sprinting section would be more broken into and will be easier to glide if you go last, while the rest of the track would be rough to ride due to it being ridden 29 times before you.

Awesome job AJ, I don't think I've ever cared to watch the skeleton before let alone being glued, watching the entire 2 heats! You are certainly accomplishing your goal, even the announcers say so :). Good luck in the next heat.
I assume you cant answer now, but the announcers kept talking about how difficult this track is, are they right? Where would this track rank on our list of most difficult tracks?

The track isnt so difficult per say--it isn't whistler, where you risk death if you get it wrong.  What it is, is hard to get down fast.  the fast lines are very difficult to find, driving fast lines are hard here.
On the list of tracks that are hard to drive fast, this ranks up there because it's new.  For someone who had no coach at the Games, being sub-53 seconds on a 5.13 push was massive for me.  Really huge.  Being 52.35 on that final run while going airborne in the chicane was also huge.

A crash is due to a number of factors, but generally problems start a corner or two back.  If you dont get the correct entry into a curve (lets say you enter a little too far left or right, the pressures can come on quicker/harsher/differently, or you might have steered wrong and caused a problematic exit.  In the Olympics, with the exception of Ghana we are all experienced and decent drivers (although Jamaica's times were helped immensely by his sprinting start, he was significantly outdriven by the remainder of the field).  Even the best drivers have problems on corner 2 and 9 on this track.  I'm a good driver (couldn't make the Games without driving well given my slow sprint), and I went airborne in 9-->12 chicane on the last run.

A good observation on over-driving--generally people overdrive when they get into trouble and they make things worse.  It happens to all of us--you get into trouble and your brain thinks it can extricate itself by just finding the fast lines.  But every time you steer you cut ice and slow yourself. Sometimes best thing is to just lay there.  I will remember of all the times in my career on a sled, this was the race i executed that well.  I went completely airborne on that last run, and managed to completely regain my position and cancel out almost all steering in the subsequent corners to try and get some speed back.

Going first/last also makes a huge difference, I was disappointed when I got last in the draw of 30 the evening before the race.  Generally the track deteriorates over the course of a race.  Going early you get the benefit of the fresh spritz they put on the ice--it's generally quicker.  the ice can deteriorate as the weather warms, or it can play games with your equipment setup, if you've set it up for colder and it goes warmer over an hour etc.

The ice goes through deterioration due to warm air temp, as well as sleds going down, taking off ice from the wall.  It also frosts due to the mixture of the refrigeration pumping under it and the humidity in the air.  Special scrapers are used to remove frost and even a corners surface, soft ice-snow mix is leveled over gouges into the ice so it freezes into hard ice, and a spritz of water from a hose is sprayed over as well, providing a new top-coat of ice.  Closest thing to a zamboni is snow-blowers used when it's snowing outside and the snow comes in.

After violating rule 50 with the Samson helmet, I spray painted over my spikes which had "im tirtzu" and "am Yisrael Chai" on them with spray paint.  Those were also rule 50 violations. Basically as a zionist I was a walking rule 50 violation.  Breaking rule 40---that'd have been the icing on the cake :p

The commentator they stuck on the online stream was horrible, and probably never saw skeleton in his life. Watching the replay on the sassvideo page makes me cringe because he seems to not know much about the track, sport, etc.
Bree Schaff on NBC Sports coverage of it on TV would be far more insightful, as would Shelley Rudman for the UK viewers, Montgomery on Canadian broadcasting--I need to find one of those.  Bree would be a good one to watch, if anyone DVRd it.

So what's next for you, AJ?  Can you use this experience to speak to kids and earn a living or is it back to the daily grind for you?
Speaking to kids is my passion. It is the fulfillment of my goal. Earning a living would be nice. I need to start a family and need to start earning parnassa. Skeleton is extremely dangerous on the brain I think and so I don't believe another cycle is in the cards for me. I started using a helmet that could reduce impacts to the head and innovated on my sled setup to act in conjunction with it. Unfortunately though it was not illegal and was approved at two races, the helmet shape was disallowed at the games, (I'm told after intervention as well from a coach of one of my competitors who I handily beat, as it seemed that the helmet was on track to be okayed again until it was abruptly shot down). Unfortunately this absolutely affected my performance as my position on the sled was based on where I situated my head with this particular helmet on.  You can note a difference in the flag on the chin for my original helmet I showed you guys vs. My race helmet. This sealed it for me that it was my last time.

Why does home field advantage play such a large role in Skeleton, but not as much in Bobsled or Luge?
Luge I can't speak to. But Bob/skeleton I can.
You see a lot less in skeleton. Feeling pressures and knowing where you are in the track are critical. There are far fewer visual cues. Hence the repetition of runs down a track is invaluable.

Each team/organization for Team ISR (skating, judo, skeleton, etc) have their own budgets.  More medals=more money.  So Skeleton has a budget of 0 shekels, we get nothing from the government.  Even flights to/from ISR are paid for out of the athlete's pockets.  Baruch hashem i've received help from private individuals and donors, including family and friends.  Skeleton costs about $40,000 per season.  I've been fortunate to get help to cover about 40% of that over 4 years, the rest coming from my former Oracle salary and savings.  At this point it would be impossible to do another cycle given the costs.

I requested from Ben Shapiro if he could sponsor or shout out on his show--he/his people passed but for $3k he could give a shoutout on his show.  I felt this was an irresponsible use of funds, haha.
DD I sent an email to once, but i think it may have gotten lost in the mix.

Regardless, I have been blessed to be the recipient of so much support from random yids all over the world, I certainly can't complain and wouldn't have been able to do it without them.
