Not that it makes a difference if I understand or not, but I am just curious:
If the problem is bots, then how does upgrading solve the problem?

I still get the error 400... here and there after posting (although the post does post)
I don't think i'm the only one cuz I've noticed people posting double sometimes not realizing that the post goes through even though they got the error.
Thanx

The first time I looked at the forums some of the buttons looked weird but now I restarted my browser and re-logged in and I don't seem to have the problem anymore.

People reported that it would solve the issue. Maybe the new upgrade is designed not to log someone out of his session just because someone from another IP address is trying to log in with the incorrect password. We will monitor it and see.

Not strange at all.  As Eli said this is happening to SMF forums across the web right now:

Those errors are from the file caching I enabled. I was hoping on RC5 the file caching wouldn't give us those issues we had last time but it does, so I'm going to disable it. Sorry about that. Thank you to all who are reporting errors.

Is it possible to confirm that this is a compatibility issue, and not just an upgrade and need to reactivate etc. issue?
Thanks!!!

I just installed the Curve Mobile Mod. Lemme know if anything changes. I think the reason why you lost the option on WAP to go to Curve Mobile is because I customized the code, along with adding an option for "Last>>" to go to the last page of a non-new thread. Maybe one day I'll put it back.

Just so the "oilam" knows...I installed 3 different programs to detect and remove spambots. Today alone there were over 20 attempts to sign up for new accounts by spambots that the forum caught and disallowed. We are still getting plenty of "incorrect password" errors from the bots but you guys haven't been reporting being signed out.

Hopefully this will work and reduce the amount of time myself and Dan need to spend dealing with bots and spammers.

My 2 cents.  It seems that the size of the lettering got a bit smaller today. Anyway to expand it slightly, to the size that it was? With my high prescription it does make a difference. Thanks!

I'm using opera mini. I don't mind how site is now, however one annoying thing that I found: on the bottom of the page, I used to be able to click to the next/previous page on that thread. On this new version, the only place to click to the next/previous page is on the top of the page. Any way to add page selection to the bottom? Thanks!

"Bad Behavior has blocked 4 access attempts in the last 7 days"

Bad behavior is a hyper-link, you can click there for more info. It's basically a spam filter for the forum.
Title: Re: Forum has been upgraded!
Post by: Eli on February 17, 2011, 04:47:04 AM
Bad behavior is one of the spam filtering modules we added to the forums.

I will uninstall the Curve Mobile theme later today. It will still be available but the forums will not default to it and you will be able to switch back and forth.

I will try to increase the font if possible. I don't remember where I did it last time. It might have been a CSS file which will be harder to find.

I'm sorry to everyone who is upset about this but to protect the security of the forums we need to keep it updated.

Thank you to everyone for your patience in this matter.

Seichel.

Also, by e-mail address, and by signature, and by username, and by post count and by last time logged in. Trust me, out of the over a thousand accounts I deleted, maybe 2 or 3 were legitimate (no one had any actual posts).

eli, i'd like to bring to your attention a major issue.   during the recent fairmont lifetime platinum deal a few of us were doing a lot of messaging back and forth to form groups, and in the middle we got completely cut off because there's a 20 PM's AN HOUR LIMIT.   that's really horrible.    can you please fix that?

My guess is that's in place to stop spammers from sending PMs for everyone.  I wouldn't know how to change it personally.
Next time there's a deal like that may I suggest that you exchange emails, which is anyway a much better communication mode.

Even more annoying is that even using this link it often reverts to WAP2 after a short bit of idle time.

Yup there are 4 themes total (anything higher than 4 it will just show you the regular one which is 1), I'm wondering if any of them would work better on my ol' centro...

If people notice any issues please post post them here.

Thanks again, bahayman!

Oh, everything seems to be seamless thus far, when did the upgrade take place?

I wonder if this will fix issues I'm having with mobile theme cookies.

Edit: Please see attached, an issue with the bleed on the right margin of the site when I post/edit). I don't remember seeing it before, and it's probably related to the 2.0 update. It's annoying because when I type a long paragraph (like this on) it doesn't wrap the text and I cannot see what I am typing.

Dan had the same problem and it disappeared after refreshing. It could be some scripts etc being cached from the previous version. Try clearing your cache and let me know.

Can anyone please help... When I'm not logged in, I can get around the forums normally, but when I log in, I can't see any of the topics on the home page. All I see is the top part of the page which shows messages, home, help, and whatever links are up there, and I can also the bottom part of the page which shows who was logged on in past half hour. But I can't see the part in between with all the topics. I'm using a phone, but never had this problem on this(or any other) phone before. The forum change has nothing to do with it, because I've been on this site since the change... I tried also the mobile site but its not working either. I got a link to this thread from asherO, so that's how I'm able to post here... Any thoughts???

I don't think i'm the only one cuz I've noticed people posting double sometimes not realizing that the post goes through even though they got the error.

The forum used to work flawlessy with Tapatalk (iPhone App) however now it is not even connecting.  It just says "connecting to forum" and the wait cursor keeps spinning, and then it times out.  ONCE in a while I'll get it to connect, but then once it connects it tries to "Load the forum" and then that will time out.  I very much love the Tapatalk App so if there is anyway to fix this please do so soon!  Thank you!

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure I have the latest version.  Other forums work just fine.  It's only DDF that I am having trouble connecting too and am experiencing a very very slow connection that often times out do to the delay.  I can't even log-in to my account through Tapatalk since it times out before processing it.

I will try to reinstall the app and see if it changes anything positively.

Bahayman did the upgrade in record time.
Now it's just a matter of waiting a day or 2 for the ip address to correct itself to point to the new host.  If you get the "maintenance mode" error that means it's pointing to the old host still for you.

I was already refunded the entire membership I paid for this year. Was that a mistake?

That was a retention bonus :P

You guys should flush DNS if you keep getting the message. Google it. I was already refunded the entire membership I paid for this year. Was that a mistake?
I'm the one usually on the sidelines watching people get the "Google it" type of responses. I guess it was my turn. Sorry... No MAINTENANCE problems today! Btw, what number did you call to get the refund? :)

post times should all be offset based so they should fix themselves...

It doesn't say Forum moderator like AAA, so I would assume not. (Possibly doesn't want the headache.)

Happens to me when I use the Tapatalk mobile app or sometimes even the mobile wap website... Do you use any of those?

could be cookies or something, try clearing them? (or maybe use private browsing to view ddf for a few hours and see if that helps?)

k, i'll try that. thanx.
btw, it only happens the first time when i click the unread posts per visit. once i'm on DDF (and i've clicked it already) then the next time i click it, i see all the unread posts since the last time i clicked it.
Title: Re: Forum has been upgraded!

similar by me - if i log on to DDF straight from the URL (if i type in dansdeals.com/foums) then many times all the unread posts are gone. so what i do is, i go to one of the emails that it sends me from a reply to a topic i posted in (usually i get a bunch a day) and i click "view the reply at: ........." and when i press that - all the unreads are there

This is not a fix but when it happens to me if I click on all unread topics as opposed to unread posts since last visit the topics will show up

For some reason I've been having issues recently that I haven't been getting any email notifications for threads that I follow, and PM's. Everything was working fine until a few days ago when I 'Unnotified' a few threads (MAyb im being punished for not following those threads anymore  ;)  ). Since then I don't get any emails even for threads that I select notify and or post in. Any idea why? Also I don't get emails for PM's anymore since then.

Thanks!!

I just realized - in an attempt to organize my inbox, I setup that dansedeals emails go straight to a Dans Deals folder. ( I totally forgot that I did it!) Problem is that they skip my inbox so I never noticed the new email. Cancelled that, and now it's all better!!

I'm sure there are widget-like things that allow this (e.g. here (http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/10_chat_widgets.php) and here (http://sixrevisions.com/tools/10-free-website-chat-widgets-to-make-your-site-interactive/)), but there's no way to moderate them.

I couldn't even load the main site at 1 pm today, and the forums took awfully slow too for w while. I figured everyone was trying to load the site at the same time for the FEDEx gift card.

Yes, just use the Curve Mobile Theme, which I mentioned here:

Curve Mobile Theme, I've mentioned my preference for it several times. I get to it by following this URL (http://www.dansdeals.com/forums/index.php?nowap;theme=4).

Warning, if you click the link from a desktop it will mess up how DDF is formatted.

I did some major restructuring today.

The forum now resides at forums.dansdeals.com instead of dansdeals.com/forums
The wiki now resides at wiki.dansdeals.com instead of dansdeals.com/wiki
(As a result of the URL change, please log out and then back in to the DDF in order to be logged in to the DDW)

This will allow us to have separate logs for DD, DDF and DDW which will help us narrow down issues caused by each individually.

I also changed the web server from Apache2 (http://httpd.apache.org/) using mod_php to Nginx (http://wiki.nginx.org/Main) using php-fcgi which seems to have cut memory usage in more then half.

Everything seems to be running perfectly (from a logs and resource perspective), please post if you have any issues.

Thanks.

Thanks for the good work BAHayman!

I have pushed the new URL to tapatalk and updated the tapatalk version as well.
Only about 4 iOS users and 8 Android users use it though.
I guess for most people it's not worth the $2.99 they charge, but to make it a free app they charge $999 :P
I just downloaded it free from installous :) going to have get used to it but looks much more convenient

I mean an app designed specifically for dansdeals. So people could say I just downloaded the dansdeals app.  I assume it would have updates when a new deal is posted etc.

You can already subscribe to updates in a thread. Why would you want an email every time someone (specific) posted?

How about being able to mark specific threads as favorites or something like that where you can get easy access to just see those threads?

And even more importantly instead of option to go to last post how about being able to go to last read post like you can do in tapatalk?

(someone please let me know if there already is a way to do these things and I'm just missing it)

I guess we can put that speculation to rest then  ;)

wiki (http://wiki.dansdeals.com/AsherO)

Quote
AsherO is one of the most prominent members on the DansDeals forums. The number of his posts are exceeded only by the founder of Dansdeals himself - Daniel Eleff. It is unclear who exactly AsherO is, although recent speculations suggest that it is possible to figure it out from a Dansdeals DO picture. Not only does AsherO hold the record for the most posts from a non-admin member, he also holds records in the following areas: most posts per day, fastest past of growth, and reading the most posts. some speculate that he reads every single post! It is uncertain how often AsherO goes on vacation, as he posts from vacation too; it is certain that after a short amount of time without any posts, threads such as "where is AsherO" will appear.

there r times where both come in 1 box shaded 2 different colors (meaning a box in a box). how is that done. if that is just quoting them together it would be simpler, i assume

there r times where both come in 1 box shaded 2 different colors (meaning a box in a box). how is that done. if that is just quoting them together it would be simpler, i assume
Qoute the second post. Then click your mouse inside that quote and quote the first post. Alternatively, quote both posts and cut the first post and paste inside the second post. Same idea.

I'm not sure what this means but this is from Stefan from Opera-
"You should also know that the web server isn't configured properly. The AAAA DNS record is returned
2600:3c03::f03c:91ff:fe93:5a5e
but the webserver is unreachable under this address. This should be fixed on the web server side."
Just fixed this issue, but I did have to restart the web server a couple times. Just an FYI in case anyone had some intermittent problems accessing the site for the past hour or so...

Not sure where the best place to post this is. I initially posted it in the Video threads but it was suggested that I take it here-

Can we come up with a good way to comment on a previous photo or video without quoting it and effectively reshowing the pic/video all over again?

It's what everyone here does for lack of a better option, but I ( and I'm sure others) find it annoying and it makes a thread more drawn out.....
Two options I can think of for videos are:
1) Remove the youtube brackets from the quote to show just the url
Ex.
&feature=player_embedded
(problem is then no one knows which video you're referring to unless they click on it or match it up by name and time)

2) Copy the title of the video on youtube and paste that into the quote in place of the original text.
Ex.
World's Shortest Man

Any Ideas for pics??

Any thoughts??

i was thinking to just quote the person without any pic in it (if theres text then leave it) and when someone wants to see what pic hes referring to then u just click on the quote and it takes you to that post.

I like that! I would suggest that for pics, and my #1 for vids.

Now, how to implement this??

when sending a pm thru tap a talk you have to send to the persons original screen name. if they have switched their user name at some point you still have to send to send to the original one  (ex. if i wanted to pm name changed from my ipod i would have to make it out to deal-er , side incomer would be kolel yungerman) anyway to fix this?

The problem of the mobile version of the main site was obviously fixed, so when you click on post it doesn't bring you back to the main page anymore. But its funny that it wasn't fixed on the "trip notes" tab, only on the others. Report.

Since this is kinda like the forums master thread (rename, anyone?), I'm posting this here:

Anyone have threads/posts they read marked as unread recently? Started happening to me yesterday, any quick fix for it? (I still want the ones I didn't read to be marked as unread, so please don't suggest marking all as read)

I know that in some other forums if you ignore once or twice (don't open the unread) then it disappears from unread list, though I'm not sure if it works here...

I hope it should never be like that here.
I have threads sitting in my list for months until I get to them.
The Chase A/A thread (for example) was on my "project" list for awhile, and so are others.

I get that sometimes, where when I click on unread tthreads I don't see a certain thread, but when I browse a forum I see that thread with the orange "new" button near it. For some reason it tends to happen after I'm away for a few days, anyone care to explain it?

these threads have posts you 'actually' didn't read?
When someone edits a post you don't see them in 'unread' section, but you see the 'new' sign on that thread.

Just saw an amazing feature on a "competitor" 's website where whenever you highlight a word in a thread a pop up comes up in the top right corner with the definition... (i.e. if a post has the word YQ in the middle and I highlight it, it pops up "fuel surcharge" in the top right corner of the window)... i thought it was pretty slick especially for newbies.

Is there a way to remove threads from the list?

No, what he suggested provides a checkbox next to each thread. You then simply check off the ones you don't want to see, and remove them from the list.

Dan, you should add a favicon to all pages on dansdeals.com. Many people are like me and have 25 tabs open at any given time. I always know which tab is DDF or DD.com as they have the dollar bills favicon, but if you're on any sub-page within DD.com (any article or post) the favicon is not displayed, and it can be very annoying trying to figure out which tab is DD. Should be a simple fix.

I read it well. It seems that you changed your mind. DDF is a subpage of DD.com. I only checked DDF and other pages within the forum because you said that only subpages don't work.

And there is no difference between the first two you posted, so now I definitely don't understand what you're saying.

DDF is a subdomain, not a subpage.

A subpage is exactly what I said in the post you just quoted.

I changed nothing, not sure what you're trying to get at.

And a url with and without the www is not the same url.

Is there a possibility to include the (http://forums.dansdeals.com/Themes/default/images/english/new.gif) button in the thread as well?

It has came to my knowlegde after speaking with a few esteem long time DDF members, that they did not realize that this (http://forums.dansdeals.com/Themes/default/images/english/new.gif) button is actually a hyperlink to your newest unread post, and not just an indicaor that there is a new post.

I just want to share this, and was also wondering if others knew about this.

Even a search for something like "I love to" wouldn't work because "I" isn't two characters.

The difference is that by inserting the quotes you will only be searching for that exact phrase, instead of any combination of those words spread throughout a post.

Exactly why searching for one letter won't work.  It would search for that letter anywhere in a post!

I don't see a problem with that. As long as it doesn't show up if the letter is part of a word. Meaning it wouldn't show the result "ice" because you typed in the letter "I" (without quotes).

Any chance in heck of ever getting a tagging feature, like Facebook has? e.g. When someone writes "Paging so-and-so", if they would start the name with a @ (like this: @so...) and a small list would pop up of suggested names of members that match what has been typed already (like when adding a recipient to a PM). The name would then be hyperlinked in the post to the member's profile, and the person being mentioned would be somehow notified that he was mentioned in a post.

This would be especially useful for catching someone's attention in a thread they don't follow. For example, on more than one occasion, someone has written "paging Moishebatchy" and I didn't see it until weeks later, or written something about me (and mentioned my name in the sentence), but I never got to comment on it because I never even knew it was there.

Just google any feature you want and SMF Mod.
If it exists I'm happy to install it.

The Wiki is the only thing on this site that was actually built from scratch.

Try quoting the post that you told us to quote, and you'll see that the part you want is to see is not there. Complicated enough? ;)

Solution: write it again, but like so:

Code: [Select]

If you want to show someone how to code, if you just write for example:

this is how you make something bold

 it'll come out like this:

this is how you make something bold.

So what you do is write like this:

[nobbc]this is how you make something bold[/nobbc]

and then it comes out like this:

this is how you make something bold

Hope that didn't come out too confusing :)

Can't remember where it is, but I think someone once asked about how to mark specific threads as read as opposed to the "MARK ALL MESSAGES AS READ" button.

 • Go here (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme)
 • Change "Show quick-moderation as" to "checkboxes"
Is there anyway to make it that the "SHOW ALL MESSAGES AS READ" button doesn't show up at all?

I did the above steps (back when you posted this) but the button is still there, and I hit it by mistake every so often.

Perhaps it has to do when the quoted post you're clicking on was merged to a difference thread?

How about putting the 'expand wiki' button (plus sign) over to the left instead of to the right? The "Edit" button is so prominent, while the expand button is lost all the way on the other end.

Or even better - maybe add a "View Wiki" button next to the "Edit" button. I think that way many more people will actually see and use the wikis.

I would love the wiki to be by default expanded a couple lines, with a "view more" button on the bottom. That way the noobs will notice the wiki (I won't bet on that :) ) while it wouldn't interfere with the thread.

On the threads that I have set ( in Tapatalk ) to be notified if there are any new posts I would only get an email if I have read the thread since the last email, but if after getting an email I will not read the thread I won't get an other email even if there are new posts in that thread.

I like seeing deals more than seeing blue screen! :) This means there is a lot of scrolling down to read. Any way that the reading area could be made wider?

More like 15 min :(

Upgraded from 2.0 to 2.0.14. Turns out SMF patches aren't entirely reliable...
Isn't the forum part of this site which is originally where you guys pulled this layout from?

Or once you have the forum you can choose to do your own updates and fixes?
What did the new update include any new features?

It's originally downloaded from that site and it's open source, they don't force you to update they just notify in administration what updates are available and you can decide if/when/what you want to update,
In minor releases they don't break anything or add anything major, usually it would be security patches and bug fixes.
Loads much faster on my slow device, will see if it's the update or by chance could be I have better service.
Lets if the issue with posts being marked as new was resolved,
Thanks @BAHayman
