-1, the slide was bush league.
He didn't even start sliding until he was past 2nd base and he slid way out of the way to knock him down.

+1

I don't follow sports much any more, but I was in the doctor's office and saw the replay, and was appalled - and I grew up a Yankees fan.

The umpire should also be suspended.

Definitely looks like the slide was to take him out, not going for the bag at all.

And Utley has a history. Not a Mets fan, and I agree with the decision.

I agree that he should be suspended.
Do you think he is being suspended because of the act or because of the result?

What do you all think about the call?
I think they may have gotten it right. Utley should have been ejected. But I don't think his interference affected the play at all. Tejada didn't step on second irrelevant of the slide (and it wasn't a "neighborhood" play because the throw pulled him off the bag). And I don't think he had a shot at the runner at first either way.

100% the result.

Agreed (which is kind of silly).
Tejada walks away from the play and no way he gets suspended

If you shoot someone in the chest and they get slightly injured do you get the death penalty? And if they die?

Of course the outcome is relevant to desicions.

I think 2 games is too little.

Of course maybe I'm still just upset at Olynyk...

You are going to jail on both of them. In this case if there is no injury then it is just JS material and nothing more.

There is nothing good about that type of play. Not sure how anyone could think it is. It breaks a ton of rules, and adds nothing to the game.

They need better rules. He didn't even go out of the baseline.

I think next year you'll see a rule that you need to slide to the bag (which kinda makes sense)

There's already a rule sort of like that in place.

No there isn't
See Torre's comments here
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/111882/joe-torre-offers-mlb-viewpoint-on-chase-utleys-little-late-slide

What we're doing in the [Arizona] Fall League, and I don't know if I'm supposed to say this, but in the Fall League, we're having the players work on sliding directly into the bag, just to see how that works and stuff.

Q. Requiring them to?

Torre: Yes, in the Fall League. This is where we can experiment with stuff. That's where we put the clocks in and stuff for speeding the game up. I just want to be sure. Everybody knew why the play was overturned, right?

There is an interference rule. There is no rule that you must slide directly into the bag. I think you'll see that next year. See my ETA above

im still confused about the result
as bad a slide as it was, according to the rules, the ump has to make an immediate judgement call. thats not easy. ok, i get that.
but they reviewed tejada touching the bag. tejada didnt touch it, utley didnt touch it.
why does utley win?

Utley left the field because he was called out.

Utley left the field because he was called out.
The one thing I don't get is, didn't tejada not try and tag him because he was called out (that and the fact that Utley broke his leg)

Yes, but...

So utley didnt touch the bag bc he was called out. but why should tejada tag him (albeit with a broken leg) if he was called out
so its like shnayim ochzin betalis

So they went to the replay. He did not tag the bag and the runner was never tagged. How can you call the runner out?

Sorry I didn't make the rule but this might help.

Q. So he never needed to touch the base?

Torre: He never needed to touch the base because the umpire called him out. You're correcting umpire's mistake. In that situation, by going to replay, and they see the runner never touched the base, but the umpire called him out, by replay rules we can correct the situation and put the runner on the bag.

the part i dont like is that had the mets tagged him on his way off the field, he would have been out, just like utley didnt know to touch the bag after being called out, the mets didnt know to touch the bag or tag him for him to be out.
obviously, this is all assuming he doesnt get called out for intentionally "sliding" directly at the fielder who was by no means in his way...but i digress

Remember when the Jets brought in Joe Girrardi to teach Sanchez how to slide? Maybe Coughlin can bring in Utley to teach the secondary how to tackle.

To me, the whole 'baserunner breaking up the double-play' is a silly and unnecessary part of the game. It's much less integral to the sport than blocking home/running over the catcher.

But that's the way it's been forever, so they're not likely to legislate it out completely.

hell hear the boos but they wont hit him.
if they warn the benches before the game, harvey gets ejected for hitting him. and unless its a blow out, its just too big of a game to bring in, say, robles to plunk him and put him on
as for next year, anythings fair game

I know Torre said that but I don't know if that is accurate. Common sense would tells the play is over after he is called out.

i have trouble with that as well, if he didnt tag the base because he was called out, what difference would it make if they tagged him afterward?

They'll wait to bring him in a high leverage situation, and have the Mets risk a free base and an ejection. If they brought him in last night, the Mets would have hit him without consequence.
