Title: Programs and Platforms That Stalk on Users
Post by: Work-for-ur-muny on October 28, 2015, 06:36:36 PM
According to avromie7 (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=45579.msg1297957#msg1297957) (and downthread) Microsoft's (Windows 8 and up) flawed privacy policy allows them to stalk and track user information. The question is how that is in comparison to other companies and if there's anything to be done about that (by any company).

I started this thread because I haven't seen a dedicated thread for this topic. (Mods, feel free to delete)

Disclaimer: This thread may be dedicated to / frequented by paranoid users.  :)

What is this thread for? Listing all the smartphone apps available on the market?

Did he start off well off, or did he work to get that way? :)

Obviously, if you know him and talk about him and he's worthwhile being mentioned than he must be an exception.

It's bs bc when these ppl started off there was no Internet. And by the time it was impossible to run a business without it, they were already paying ppl to have the Internet for them.

The grandson of a very big hair told me, my grandfather has a special fax machine that prints out all his incoming emails so that he doesn't have to have Internet. But his sons and secretaries all do have Internet so....

So is that an opportunity for his phone service provider to also be able to stalk on his emails?

In case you were under the illusion that Google "doesn't really stalk", I just opened a website funded by google ads and found nearly every single item I have viewed on various sites in the last 2-3 days.

Q: Do you consider this

Where's the choice for none of the above?

Google is a business. They use data to make money. Sometimes they use it to find new ways to make your life better or easier. None of that should bother or concern you at all.

You may be right for scary. But it definitely is annoying... I mean, let me live my life without intrusions, no?

How is it intrusive? There would always be ads, they just use data to pick which ads. Better to reserve your ire for pop-ups, which actually are intrusive.

Speaking to PC World, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Joe Belfiore explained that Windows 10 is constantly tracking how it operates and how you are using it and sending that information back to Microsoft by default. More importantly he also confirmed that, despite offering some options to turn elements of tracking off, core data collection simply cannot be stopped:

“In the cases where we’ve not provided options, we feel that those things have to do with the health of the system,” he said. “In the case of knowing that our system that we’ve created is crashing, or is having serious performance problems, we view that as so helpful to the ecosystem and so not an issue of personal privacy, that today we collect that data so that we make that experience better for everyone.”

This backs up detailed data that some had chosen to dismiss as conspiracy theories.

By default Windows 10 Home is allowed to control your bandwidth usage, install any software it wants whenever it wants (without providing detailed information on what these updates do), display ads in the Start Menu (currently it has been limited to app advertisements), send your hardware details and any changes you make to Microsoft and even log your browser history and keystrokes which the Windows End User Licence Agreement (EULA) states you allow Microsoft to use for analysis.

My gut reaction is that while it's annoying, it doesn't really affect me. But then again, I really have no idea what they do with the information and how much it affects me.

This is really scary:

For people using shared links on Dropbox or Google Drive, these tracking services are able to get access to all information shared. Many times you are sharing material that might be confidential, like a financial report or an internal contract or document. Through these analytics services, people can find these links to the documents and gain access to them without your knowledge or consent.

They're a website that's supposed to watch your website and notify you if there are any issues. I signed up for it ages ago but haven't really used it.
