Title: Bank Direct AAdvantage Mileage Checking Account
Post by: Dan on September 03, 2010, 12:35:13 PM
Tired of getting little to no interest on your liquid checking accounts?

With Bank Direct you 1.2 AA miles per year per dollar in the account.  At a value of 1.6 cents per AA mile that's equal to 1.92% interest per year.  Plus there's no tax owed on miles so its more like 3% interest per year.

If you have $50,000 in an account you will get 5,000 miles per month, for a total of 60,000 miles in a year.

-If I refer you you'll get a bonus 1,000 miles for signing up in addition to the regular 1,000 mile signup bonus. (PM me for a referral)

-Withdrawals are easy, you can use any ATM for free and they reimburse the banks ATM charge as well 4 times per month.

-For deposits I deposit at my local bank and ACH it online to Bank Direct.  You can mail in deposits as well in prepaid envelopes.

There is a $2,500 minimum to avoid fees.

-I have a $1 bill pay set up every 15th of the month to my credit card to qualify for the 2,000 mile billpay bonus.

-You can also get 5,000 miles if you have direct deposit.

-Unlike on a regular account where you owe taxes on the interest earned, you don't pay any taxes on miles earned!

What do you pay for the ACH? Im curious as well how long it takes to get money in and out via ACH.

It says on their site, You may withdrawal up to a maximum of $500.00 (if there are sufficient funds in your account) per day
    * For security purposes, there may be limits on the frequency and amount of transfers you make at ATMs.

So if i need to take out $1000 one day, id be stuck making the withdrawal over 2 days...is there another faster way to get $ out?

ACH is free with every account I've ever had.  Citi offers next day ACH for free, most banks take a couple days.

Maybe you could get more cash out by using the debit card and asking for cash back? Not really sure, you'd have to call them for that one.

Have you ever closed a bank direct account? I was about to sign up and was reading the schedule of fees and it seems there is a minimum charge of $7.00 to close the account. Did i read it wrong? it seems they nickle and dime you for every little thing.

You're misreading the fee schedule, there's no account closure fee.
The $7 fee is for a cashier's check on a closed account.

Congrats to anyone with a BankDirect account.
They gave 4 times the amount of earned miles to everyone for the August statement!

Dan, when you opened the account, did you ACH the money to them? I know you use chase bank. I checed online and it seems the only checking account that has free ACH's is the premier platinum checking (personal).

When opening the Bank direct account, the only choices offered were credit card (as a CA), check, or wire transfer. A wire transfer would cost me $20. I already clicked wire transfer and moved on, and im thinking im probably better off with a check. Do you think i could/should change it to fund via check? I did use your name as a referral so you can expect your miles as soon as i get this all figured out.

The only active one i can find seems to require $6000 balance to avoid fees. im not so interested in giving them that much of my $. Is there another one out there that i missed?

There is a $6k min. to avoid fees so I guess its not quite what you're after.
Although, for those that are putting $6k in BankDirect, Citi gives many more miles...

I used a check initially and now use Citi ACH to pull and push funds, but that can all still be done by check.

And you can always open the Citi, get the miles, and downgrade/close the account.

Student accounts, while generally free, will mostly get you nothing.
Chase is great, 25k bonus on both personal and business and 1mile/$1 spend on the business card.
Full details, http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/8089

does the cash back rewards program from chase come with any checking account you open with them?

I didn't notice until this post.  That's awesome.  I wish I hadn't been slowly moving money back into my BBVA Compass Bank account which has grandfathered AA alignment from Guaranty Bank.

BTW, another great thing about BankDirect is that their bill pay (free) allows you to do ACH transfers into another persons bank account (i.e., a gardener, day care provider, etc.).  All you need is their routing and account numbers.  None of my other banks have this feature.

Did you get the 4x miles for August as well for what you had in Bank Direct?

Worth noting that effective 03/01 Bank Direct is limiting people to 20,000 AA miles per month.
Still a lot considering it takes $200,000 on deposit to get 20,000 miles per month.

Just curious if anyone else is still using a BBVA Compass account to earn AA miles (under a grandfathered account from the old Guaranty Bank).  I'd like to know if there are other people who might report changes to this board in case I miss something.

According to the Rep I spoke with these new rules are not for sure going to be effective 3/01 possibly a later date though. Also it seems that the 20,000 limit is per AA account. Therefore you can credit to two or more AA accounts.(even your own then merge later)

It's not per AA account, it's per checking account.  You are allowed to have 2 checking accounts under their current rules.

Per SSN. If you want FDIC insurance you need to keep your balance under $250k per account anyway.

We should all have this problem (too much money) :)

Btw as a side note if it will ever be nogea there are many ways to have  more than $250,000 FDIC insurance. You are eligible $250,000 per account type Joints get 250k per person and single gets 250 so a couple would automatically get $500k for their joint and $250k each in other individual accounts. for a total of 1 million. Also if beneficiaries are added to accounts then there is another additional $250k per beneficiary and there is no limit to how many can be placed on the account.

I just spoke to a rep and he said the limit applies to the AA account. You can have as many mileage checking accounts as you want just you can only be crediting miles to your AA account from maximum of two mileage checking accounts.

According to FT this might change along with the other changes being discussed.

Just spoke to Bank Direct supervisor ans she said that they are having a meeting this afternoon regarding the changes that will take place. It will be effective April 1, 2011.  She said she will call me back with info on the changes after the meeting. She said she doesn't think there will be cap per se just once you reach a certain threshold $250,000 the earning will be lower so I would not worry too much about it. But Ill keep everyone posted. Also interestingly enough another big guy at Texas Capital Bank the owners of Bank Direct told me that they pay 1.8 cpm to AA. And they are really losing alot of money off the program and therefore eventually there  will have to be a change in the future, but he didn't say that this change will be soon.

1.8cpm, that's hard to believe. Why would they be paying that if they can borrow from the Fed for less?

Its from when interest rates were much higher and that is exactly why they are losing money.

i've mentioned before:

On the original topic, i'm very happy banking with chase.

A business account gets you a free premier account.
The premier account gives free checks and four withdrawals from other banks' atms, although they dont refund the other bank's fee.
And i'm convinced the customer service is better. I don't think theres anything they haven't been able to do for me, happily, since i switched.
And in general chase has good customer service, in the branch and on the phone, and are open quite late, and i like their online banking

Business accounts are free with 5 purchases a month, otherwise they charge you whatever balance is in the account, up to $15 per month.

Effective 04/01 you will get the AA miles at the same rate 1 mile per $10 per month (12 miles per $10 per year) for balances up to $200,000.  For anything over $200,000 you will only get 1 mile per $40 per month.

Currently you can have 2 mileage checking accounts per person but soon (April 1st maybe?) they will only allow 1 mileage checking account per household to be opened!  Accounts that are open before will be allowed to stay open and each grandfathered account will be allowed to earn miles at the higher rate for up to $200K per account.

Attention AA Customers:
Limit 2 Mileage transaction accounts per household: One Mileage Checking Account and one Mileage Money Market Account.

Also someone on FT just reported that new customers will only get 1 mile per $20 per month!  Still showing 1 mile per $10 on this site though so you may be able to apply now with a different address and still get the old rate!

I'm not talking about miles, I'm talking about interest. If the AA miles effectively cost them nearly 2%, why wouldn't the borrow from the Federal Government who (from what I understand) is lending money to the banks at less than 1% (hence the low interest rates in this country) to stimulate spending?

+100

This is important because people don't usually maintain their balances in multiples of $1,000.

Effective 04/01 you will get the AA miles at the same rate 1 mile per $10 per month (12 miles per $10 per year) for balances up to $200,000.  For anything over $200,000 you will only get 1 mile per $40 per month.
Dan,
Does that mean it's prorated or were you just breaking it down for us?

The t&c authorizes BD to verify credit information. Will this count as a hard pull? and if so from which agency?

there is no point in doing that you'll only wind up with the 2k signup bonus the check card, direct deposit and bill pay bonuses are only after 1 yr. but really if you have money you want to earn tax free interest on this is still your best bet

Im aware, however, I dont currently use mileage for travelling purposes and as such I dont care to keep them; I would sell them. Now to sell you need a substantial amount and without it my miles are in essence worth nothing (nothing meaning cash at approx 1.4) so I am in doubt if I should or shouldnt get involved.

i just got my first months aa miles after my initial deposit and it seems like it was 100 miles per $1000 not 1 per $10

is it worth setting up 3 billpays a month to get 5000 miles at the end of the year? i guess i can pay 3 credit cards $5 each.

i just got my first months aa miles after my initial deposit and it seems like it was 100 miles per $1000 not 1 per $10
lets say i deposited $8000. after making one bill pay of $5 it only gave me 700 miles
If you had $7,995 in the for a whole month you would have received 799 or 800 miles.  More likely is that you deposited the $8,000 a few days (maybe 3 or 4 days if my math is correct) into the month, which gave you an average daily balance of $7,000.

Considering it's a debit card, swiping it at a gas station might hold the funds.

how long does it hold for and how much? if i have over $2500 does it affect me negatively

can i make multiple purchases from the same store, one after the other? or will they not count that?

So I just read through the read and it is unclear if people are happy with this and are properly earning the most amount of miles through this account.  Can someone sum up the new terms and conditions and what one can expect if they enroll for an account?

Also, if i put in money i can only take out in increments of $1500??

Thanks

I dunno what info you're looking for in your first question, but it's definitely legit.

It's a checking account, so you can withdraw as much as you want whenever you want (as long as those funds are in the account).

So say I put in 100k, will I earn 10k AA miles a month?  And can I withdraw 100k at any given time in one shot?

Yes and yes (you might trigger a flag if you write 100k check out of the blue, so you might want to notify them first, but this is true of any bank.

here is the answer,
also it sounds like they are warning not to do the 12 $1 transactions, anyone had a problem getting their points?

Thank you for your e-mail. Visa check card transactions are counted for the month that the transaction posts to your account. So if a purchase made on July 29th doesn't post to your account until August 1st, then is would be counted as one of your "August" transactions. Please note, mileage awards are part of a marketing program designed to attract customers who choose BankDirect for their ordinary day to day operating account. The program requirements are easily reached by any customer with normal purchases and bill payment. We reserve the right to deny mileage requests for any obvious attempts to meet the technical requirements of the program without normal activity. Yep, tried that already a couple nights ago, no response from Dan. I sent him a PM as well.
I assume he's unable or too busy.
Or... maybe he wants people who are fighting to reach a million miles jump in.

In the meantime, I'm losing potential miles each day that goes by while my money is sitting around waiting.

I can try a different group, I guess, like FT, but I'd much rather give the opportunity for bonus AA miles to mishpacha    :P

Considering his DDF signature reads:

It's fair to assume he can still send you one.

Has anyone tried to fund this account using Chase's bill pay feature? (Where they send out the check for you)
I just don't have any checks left and i'm trying to think of a free way to fund the account

If checks are the only problem, ask the bank for a cashiers check. Should be free.

Now if you want some checks for dirt cheap, this deal seems to never go dead http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/13658

1.2-1.6 depending on amount.

1.2-1.6 depending on amount.

realistically what is the minimum amount I would need for someone to be willing to buy them off me? I'm thinking of opening an account but would get the miles to sell and don't have an AA card so I need to figure out if the numbers work out

How many miles are we talking about? If it's 20-30k, don't expect more than 1-1.2cpm

Perhaps I'm being conservative, but if it's <50k you'll have a hard time moving it.

I would be putting in around $20-25k so it would take me awhile to hit 50k.

I have a question on BankDirect checking account. I have a joint account, but the money is well over 200K. The part that is over only gt 50 miles per $1000. I am thinking about open a new checking account, but i read in its web site, it only allows one checking per household. Will it work if i open one use my company address or/and switch main applicant? Thanks!

Bank direct is changing the rules. I just got notice that they are only giving the current ratio of miles up to $50k!  This is a serious game changer. Goes into effect 6/1/13. Did anyone else get this notice?
