Title: I Remember When...
Post by: Work-for-ur-muny on April 06, 2016, 03:08:07 PM
Sometimes, when trudging up a very steep hill you get to a point where you look back and say, "Wow! I did all this?! I didn't even realize how far I've come..."

In today's digital age, things (and not just technology) advance to such a far reaching point that when you look back it makes you say, "Hey..." or "Wow.."
I figured I'll start this thread so we can help each other make the look back...

I'll start with this one (so as not to reveal my age  ;) )

...a palm centro was considered a smartphone...

Nextel was a service provider. Motorola developed the technology that included the two way radio feature, and manufactured most (maybe even all) of the models offered with Nextel.

This was a must-have item:

With its whopping 8MB of memory ;D

Got mine on black friday 2001 for $99 IIRC.
If the battery died you lost all your data. Luckily it had great desktop backup capabilities, something that Android still lacks.

Talking of nickels, I used to wonder why the Belgians made their 1 Franc coins match a US nickel and 5 Franc coins match a quarter (IIRC) they worked perfectly in parking meters and payphones.

And I still remember my first call from a payphone to Eretz Yisroel, (and the only one done with currency, rather than other methods). It was over $9 for the first 3 minutes, you needed the operator to get involved, as she would do something to make the payphone swallow the coins after $3 were deposited, because otherwise the phone wouldn't take more than that.

I'm not sure what method other people were referring to above regarding free calls on a payphone but our method was to place a collect call. You had about 2 seconds to record your name and in that two seconds you would say a la aseres bnei haman "pick-me-up-in-ten-minutes-in-front-of-the-library-please!"

There was a method by drilling a hole in a quarter and letting it down with a string. It was able to be pulled back up if you knew exactly at which moment you had to give the tug.

Didn't work on those occasions when you bumped into a live operator.

Then we used the Person-to-Person collect call method, for example: "Operator, I would like to place a person to person collect call from Mr. Ruf Mir to Mr. Leben Zal", or just a person to person call, which would be declined as the "person" is not there, and the operator would kindly leave a message for such person to call back the number when he or she comes in.

only the old 5.25 inch ones were really floppy. Once they were 3.5 they were hard.
The 5.25 disks held a whopping 100kb of data and the high density ones went up to 360.

The 3.5 actually held 1.44mb

IIRC 5.25" floppies were 180kb for SS (single sided) and 360kb for DS. 512kb for SSDD (single sided double density) or 1.2MB for DSDD (double sided double density).

Now I also had the privelege of working for a short while with a Typesetting machine (that was before laser printers) that used 8" floppies, I can't recall how much those held, but the machine definitely was very limited in file size.

Reading an NYT Op-Ed in the late 80's about a time in the future when everyone will have all their money on a card and everyone will have a reader to transfer money to each other. To account for all outstanding USD green cash would be required to be exchanged for red cash, then once more for black cash and then transferred to the card and cash would go away. Still trying to find the digital version of it. Probably 1989-90

Guy in Yeshivah who just had a newborn baby sister wanted to find out her name. so he made a collect call home from "mah shmo?" Operator comes back to him, "She is not available but Devorah Leah is. Would you like to speak to her?"

While many of them went the way of the dodo, just Google ML321 still manufactured and in use for certain applications. It's a workhorse!

I'm well aware. My parents have a business where one of the services they provide is printing annual DHCR for clients who are landlords. Don't remember if it was the ML321, but it was definitely Okidata. And it was super loud (they did this in their home office), and ran seemingly nonstop for a week or two.

We had to hurry "long distance" calls, cuz they cost money.

Or those many plans that had the first incoming minute free. ...o how many fifty-nine-second calls we had in the call history...
Lucky you - at some point I had a phone where a 3 second call counted as a full minute.

Calls to Eretz Yisroel on a special plan with AT&T (long distance, not wireless) = $2.50 (I think) for the first minute, $0.75 for each additional minute, and that was a bargain over the regular rates.
I remember reading in a Shmues'n Mit Kinder article about telephones how, nowadays, telephone technology is so advanced that for just $12 you can talk to Eretz Yisroel, and they let you talk for 4 minutes! (mind you, this is in 60s dollars...)

Check out http://floppydisk.com/
You mixed it up a little. Double sided, high density disks are 360KB. Double sided, high density disks are 1.2MB.
You wrote in past tense ("were"). I am writing in present tense. I just checked my box of 5.25" floppies to verify this info.

The phone company would offer a free caller ID box for signing up for the service. Later, they offered a free phone with a built in caller ID display. I churned about three of the former and four of the latter.

IIRC, those were far easier to insert and remove than later CPUs because the heatsink or fan could be left attached to the CPU, so no need to play with thermal compound every time you swap CPUs.

When you paid for your flight on your flight - People Express - and they used a credit card swiper that took an imprint of your credit card.

In fact, I remember that all merchants used that type of credit card 'processing'.

...your word meant something.

I heard a wonderful story on Shabbos. Someone was was waiting in Manhattan for the Heiman's bus (that is an orthodox run bus service between NYC to Montreal, which makes a few stops in places like Williamsburg, Boro Park, Crown Heights and Manhattan to pick up passengers.) and he called to find out what time the bus will make its stop in Manhattan. After waiting for a while and the bus not showing up, he calls back and the same lady answers the phone. She informs him that the bus got full at its previous stops and so it did not come to Manhattan and headed straight to Montreal.
"But you said to me the bus would stop here!?"
"I said? My word is not a word."

Yes. But I remember as a kid if we got a fax we didn't want anyone to see we would just put it over the kettle and that was the end of it.

It also is a bargain at a cost of $0.
