Post by: SuperFlyer on March 30, 2011, 07:06:53 AM
Post your useful utilities/programs for Windows (not demos), as well as a description:

Please dont clutter this thread if possible, and going off topic, so that a overview should be possible.

Those utilities have ussualy a manual build in or on their site, if needed.

FileMenu Tools

FileMenu Tools allows you to customise the context menu (right-click menu) of Windows Explorer. And it lets you:

    * Add some built-in utilities that perform operations on files and folders.
    * Add customised commands which run external applications, copy/move to a specific folder or delete specific file types.
    * Configure the "Send to..." submenu.
    * Enable/disable commands which are added by other applications to the context menu.

Unlocker

Ever had such an annoying message given by Windows: Cannot delete file: Access is denied. There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use or the file is in use by another program or user. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. Unlocker is the solution. Unlocker is an Explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file or folder to get rid of error message such as error deleting file or folder, cannot delete folder: it is used by another person or program.

Boss Toolbar (only for IE)

The major advantage of this Boss Toolbar is the fact that with one click you can hide the browser without leaving a trace even in the taskbar. With another click, all the browser windows reappear (standard shortcut is CTRL+Q, but you can change it). Boost your Web browsing experience, privacy, and enjoyment by protecting your privacy, auto-fill your forms and passwords, and clean your Web browsing history, including cookies, cache, recent documents, clipboard, recycle bin, and auto-complete field.

I added a screenshot to pinpoint the hidden menu:

Revo Uninstaller is a must for me.
When you use a programs uninstaller, very often the program deliberately leaves files and registry entries behind (Especially if it's a adware program). Revo searches through your computer to get rid of them (during the uninstall process, you can't do it after you've uninstalled in the free version)

http://www.revouninstaller.com/start_freeware_download.html

Make sure you get the free one, not the "free trial" Pro, paid version

TrueCrypt

Free open-source disk encryption software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X, and Linux
Main Features:

    * Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.

    * Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.

    * Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).

    * Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.

    * Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted.

    * Encryption can be hardware-accelerated on modern processors.

    * Provides plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:

Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system.

A bit complicated for the novice, but reading properly all the explanations does help.

Jdownloader

JDownloader is open source, platform independent and written completely in Java. It simplifies downloading files from One-Click-Hosters like Rapidshare.com or Megaupload.com - not only for users with a premium account but also for users who don't pay. It offers downloading in multiple paralell streams, captcha recognition, automatical file extraction and much more. Of course, JDownloader is absolutely free of charge. Additionally, many "link encryption" sites are supported - so you just paste the "encrypted" links and JD does the rest. JDownloader can import CCF, RSDF and the new DLC files.

What has axcrypt, that you find it better?

Primarily, I like that AxCrypt allow the encrpytion of individual files where as TruCrypt (from last that I used - quite some time ago), requires you to make a encrypted folder or drive that you place all your files within.  It's not that one is better than the other, it's just that I prefer AxCrypt over TruCrypt because of this.

How easy is this to set up? You have to save the EXE online somewhere, since EXE files are blocked by many email services. Is there anywhere that'll host it (publicly) for free?

You mean the 'add computer' link after you log in? What I'm really annoyed about it that they removed the 'users' feature from the LMI free accounts).

If you use the add computer link and download the file that it gives you, that is a customized to your account installer. I have that in my public dropbox and send out that link, when someone installs it, it gets added to my account :)

Honestly I haven't spent that much time using LMI, but I've always been thrilled with TV.  Yes you have to download an exe but I usually e-mail the D/L link rather than attach the file.  To run once, it's a live run, no installation.  If it's a machine that I have to access frequently you can install it as a background service that opens with windows so I don't even need the person to give me the code anymore, I have a preset admin password.

So when you have multiples of these, can you log onto two of them simultaneously? Is the TV client (not host) experience similar to LMI?

I thought I added it, but Synergy.

It allows you to control 2 separate computers with 1 Keyboard/Mouse. So say you are working on your desktop and a laptop, or 2 laptops. Instead of reaching back and forth you can just slide the mouse between computers like a dual screen config. Really cool

First of all: http://ninite.com - they can create a custom on the fly installer for many popular apps:

Some great windows utilities

4k Downloader
http://www.4kdownload.com/
Great for downloading youtube videos, you can set a default file type to download and then start loading up your queue

Tera-Copy
http://codesector.com/teracopy
Great tool if you do a lot of file copying and need to make sure files copied and can pause/resume (if you are familiar with xxcopy then stick with xxcopy)

Magic ISO
http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm
Free virtual cd/dvd drive from iso and other virtual disks

VBox
https://www.virtualbox.org/
Create/Host VHD's and other VM's, much better then windows Virtual PC (larger vhd's, multiple cores..)

PageMoniter plugin for Chrome
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/page-monitor/pemhgklkefakciniebenbfclihhmmfcd?hl=en
Great tool if you need to be alerted when an items becomes in stock or any other changes are made to a webpage.

WizMouse
http://download.cnet.com/WizMouse/3000-18487_4-10907935.html

A must (IMHO) when using multiple screens
---
WizMouse from Antibody Software takes care of an annoying issue in Windows that has only gotten worse as PC screens have grown bigger: the need to click each window before you can use your mouse in it. With WizMouse running, any visible window is active; just mouse over it to activate menus, commands, and links for clicking. Whether windows overlap or are separated by space, WizMouse treats them the same. And not just buttons, either: WizMouse also enables scrolling, even in applications lacking mouse wheel support (though that's an experimental option that can cause "strange behavior" in some systems). WizMouse can also reverse the scrolling direction to simulate Apple's mouse technology.

WizMouse's installer finishes with a Configuration screen offering some additional downloads, which we declined, and some setup options such as Start with Windows, Run as Administrator, and the previously mentioned option to enable mouse wheel commands without mouse wheel support with the ability to set lines per scroll. The only place we want to see "strange behavior" when using the computer is on YouTube, but we didn't need it to scroll with our mouse (which is actually a Rat). We could also activate an option to toggle WinMouse on and off by left-clicking the program's system tray icon, hide the icon entirely, and bring the scrolling window to the foreground. This last option can be especially useful, but we're glad WizMouse let us decide. A system tray icon accesses WizMouse's menu and opens the Configuration screen. We chose to run WizMouse as an administrator, which enables the software in admin windows, to test a bug fix (it worked, apparently).

It was totally easy to test WizMouse: We simply opened three windows, overlapped them, and rolled our cursor from one toolbar to the next, activating anything clickable as we passed over it. And click we did, too -- but the scrolling feature may be better still. Any window our cursor was active in scrolled smoothly, potentially saving a lot of extra clicks when switching rapidly between several open windows. WizMouse is free, so try it and see if it works for you.

And pinned tabs definitely get my vote. I like how they work in Firefox - they turn blue when something changes, so I know I got a new email / chat by glancing at my gmail tab.

Just uninstalled Norton Internet Security.  It came bundled and I wasn't particularly interested in paying $79 to renew.  I also thought it hogged a lot of system resources.  Recommendations for a replacement?

Nothing seems to happen when I press Control-PrintScreen.

There are programs abound for finding and removing duplicate files.

I'm curious which ones people use and like.

Thanks!

For simple recording just go to “settings” -> “broadcast settings” -> “file output only”… and then select where the file should be saved and give it a name with a .mp4 ending (for example gameplay.mp4).  (from: https://www.reddit.com/r/software/comments/4p9bq6/looking_for_suitable_video_screen_capture/d4jcn2q )

If you have Windows Pro you can use Print Management for that. See here https://uknowit.uwgb.edu/page.php?id=52550

For Windows Home, you can try the alternative way here (http://theitbros.com/remove-windows-vista7-printer-driver/) in the 2nd half of the page, through registry edits, but you should not touch the registry without knowing what you are doing!

But keep in mind that if the printer is still connected to the machine it might reinstall through the printer's PNP capabilities.

There is no way to "completely" remove something while staying with it...that is what want to do. I'd suggest you remove both of them normally, then force remove through Print Management (while printer is unplugged.) And afterward just install the printer freshly.

ok needed this for myself figured I would share (not my code i just added a word or 2)

I needed to make sure that a program is always running and if its not then start it. The max break I can have is 5 min.
I set a schedule to run the batch file (bat) at logon and repeat every 5 min.

cmd.exe /c tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq outlook.exe" | find /I /N "outlook.exe" ||start "" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE"

Sure! Google groups has a limit of how many GB of attachments can be in an email (I think it's 5gb). When I want to send out 3-4 pics to a group, I need to resize them first.

You mean MB, it is 8 MB.

I think that you should do it with a calculator. Do 8192/? (where the question mark is the number of photos you wanna send) and the results is the size each photo can be resized to with any batch resizer.

I used to use a program called MagicDisc to backup my CDs and DVDs in case of scratching. It doesn't seem to work in Windows 10. Any other recommendations? I was able to make an .iso file using ImgBurn, but can't figure out how to play it (it's a video).

ISO is an image, you can't paly from it, you need to extract the data.

I don't have an CDs/DVDs today, I just copy the files to my hard drive

I used to be able to Mount ISO files to a virtual drive and then play them like a regular video DVD. I tried playing the files in AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS, but they didn't work.

Even with VLC?  Windows10 has a built in image mounter, so after creating the ISO, double clicking it should make it mounted, and then VLC can play it..

Double clicking just opens the files. Maybe ImgBurn didn't get a good image?
I use http://wincdemu.sysprogs.org/
So I created a new image with this program, and it doesn't seem to work either. The DVD opens up but I just hear the music (but it plays a little to fast) and don't see the actual video.

Use 7zip or whatever to extract the ISO to your computer.  Then open with VLC.  Any better?  This will help understand whether its the image/mount, or the actual video file (or your pc)..

Not a program but a website.

https://distrotest.net/

Let's you test out hundreds of types of Linux distros in a browser virtual machine. Although there is significant lag.

Thought it's really cool.

This is only applicable to those with multiple machines at one location,

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/manage/windows-admin-center/overview

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/windows-admin-center

It's very cool.

Not sure if this is useful for anyone else, but in Windows 10 if you hit Windows+Shift+S it will allow you to snip a screen shot using your mouse
Super useful!  I did not know this and it will save me lots of time.  TY!

7zip
http://www.7-zip.org/ (http://www.7-zip.org/)
7-Zip is open source software. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions. Check license information here: 7-Zip license (http://www.7-zip.org/license.txt).
You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip.
 The main features of 7-Zip
  • High compression ratio in 7z format (http://www.7-zip.org/7z.html) with LZMA and LZMA2 compression
  • Supported formats:
    • Packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM
    • Unpacking only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DEB, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, VHD, WIM, XAR and Z.
  • For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
  • Strong AES-256 encryption in 7z and ZIP formats
  • Self-extracting capability for 7z format
  • Integration with Windows Shell
  • Powerful File Manager
  • Powerful command line version
  • Plugin for FAR Manager
  • Localizations for 79 languages
I have used it and it pretty similar to win zip
