Title: REVIVE THE FLIP PHONE
Post by: yanky425 on September 04, 2016, 08:33:08 PM
Am I the only one around who wants to ditch my smartphone?

I have a computer at work, and aside from needing my contacts and calendar events alerts every now and then, I don't want anything else in my pocket.

Does anyone know of a flip phone that can manually import calendar events from CSV?

+1 IMHO such a device could sell very well
But I would say it should have One feature namely it should sync contacts and calendar with google

I think tag etc. Should invest in something like this shouldn't be too complicated any existing feature phone could handle it with some Java coding

A friend of mine finally caved last week and ditched his flip phone for a smartphone... :)

If TAG markets it it'll be a flop. Needs irreligious imo. Also whatsapp. And tapatalk.

These kind are already available, they are called "smartphones", the discussion here is that people want "plain" flip phone & should have nothing more then a flip phone has nowadays, just they want that the info that is already there should be synced to google, but they don't want any new features or apps.

When making the manufacturing decision, please count me as a customer.

PS I have sprint service, so please make a sprint version. (If ever manufactured it wont be available for sprint or Verizon, as with the stupid CDMA system that the devices need to be specific for the carrier, so even if %1 of the market wants such a phone ita not worthwhile to invest in a carrier specific for this model, but %1 of the the GSM that is most of the world, there the %1 is a much bigger number & its worthwhile to produce for that %1)

+1000000000
Though I would add some kind of a QWERTY keyboard as well as multilingual capabilities. I actually got a Nokia E72, which could have been a compromise that I might be happy with for myself if I could remove some unnecessary bloatware and have it working smoothly.

I like the SAMSUNG GALAXY FOLDER. I'm on Verizon and this isn't an option. I always contemplate that change to a GSM provider to give me a broader choice of phones.

You are missing the point, most people are not looking to have a dumb looking smartphone, it is about a feature phone with a few minor advances such as google contacts and calendar sync, no apps, no whatsapp

I think this is where there's a gap in what's available

I agree with you for the most, though WhatsApp has become a major form of communication (I am not talking about groups, but p2p communication). Nokia 208 is a feature phone that supports whatsapp (at least until the end of 2016, but even BB support for whatsapp is ending - so we desperately need the world to move to Telegram and have Telegram apps for all kinds of phones).

That's nice! First such phone from a US carrier (though it's a shame that its TraceFone and not one of the major carriers, or unlocked.) It is much more old-school flip-phone style than the Samsung Android flip phone and somewhat more updated specs than the LG Wine.

Yea, it's a real shame that its only tracfone (specially as tracfone devices are known to be hard to unlock), but it's a step in the right direction, & hopefully other US carriers will follow suit.

ETA: just saw this https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/wps/portal/home/ so could be unlocking won't be so hard. But when will it be available  stupid CDMA version?

You are asking when this phone will be available? It is already available.

About unlocking, true that they write that the phones will be capable of unlocking, but officially they won't unlock if not used 12 months with their service. (when unlocked would this be compatible with Verizon and Verizon MVNO?)

Which android flip phone? The "TracFone - ZTE Cymbal T" comes with such a keyboard (T12, not T9) preinstalled. It is TouchPal Keyboard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.emoji.keyboard.touchpal&referrer=IME_ONLINE_000026) but not sure if they have a special version for their phone.

I think he looks for a T9 on the physical keyboard, bot just this layout on the touchscreen.

The Wine should have itself a T9 option (see here (http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_wine_smart-reviews-7451.php#5401745) and here (http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/the-flip-phone-is-back-with-the-lg-wine-smart) talks about it) I just don't know the right setting or key you need to use to turn it on. Try looking in Language & Input settings, also try if the # or * key do not change the keyboard to be T9 (obviously all those only if LG Keyboard is selected to be the default keyboard.)

The cymbal-T is Tracfone only.

I've finally taken the plunge and switched to an LG Exalt LTE.

After less than 24 hours with the device, there are some immediate pros and cons that I see. Hopefully we can work through some of the cons.

First the cons:

1. No outside screen. Need to flip the phone open to check time or see who's calling.
2. Lack of Hebrew input.
3. No Whatsapp or Telegram (that I'm aware of yet).
4. No (obvious, or possibly none at all) way to send voice notes.
5. No Jewish texts easily available (though I'm sure I will find a solution to this, at the very least, add them as notes to the notepad app).

And some of the Pros:
1. PHYSICAL DIALPAD!
2. No touchscreen.
3. Actually displays Hebrew in contacts and text messages - this was one thing I was afraid I would lose.
4. No urge to go online, as it isn't very practical.
5. Ability to go online when needed, and basic email access.
6. Light.
7. Flip phone - won't dial numbers by mistake while in my pocket.
8. Unlocked global phone (while LTE bands seem to be limited to Verizon bands, it seems to have support for 3G bands that will work almost anywhere).
9. Wifi hotspot capability.
10. Much better for שלום בית!
11. PHYSICAL DIALPAD!

From playing around with the phone, it seems to me like the phone firmware is some highly customized version of Android, which actually gives me hope of the ability to eventually get some of the cons I listed resolved.

Anyone else got this phone, any software solutions/upgrades?

It's one of the things that made me decide before I ordered that I can live with any cons, as I can always connect with a tablet/smartphone over wifi if needed. Though the lack of outside screen is really stupid IMHO, especially since the default setting is to answer calls by flipping phone open.

T9 or just regular abc (also gives Chinese input option, which gives me a very slight glimmer of hope for Hebrew eventually becoming available).

It is not Android. Haven't found any way to add or install apps (though it looks like it's based on android kernel- highly modified).

Link you posted doesn't work (maybe need to be logged in to VZW to view). Here's a link to the manual from LG: http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-LGVN220#manuals

Yeah, one can share a voice note, but it's not as simple as responding to a text message or a whatsapp by just holding a button and recording a response.

With the screen size, I don't see how that would be practical. Didn't try. Though even if one cannot directly, I'm sure one could use a web based workaround if really necessary.

My only problem is that I haven't figured out yet any way to enter developer mode or debug mode or anything of the sort, that will let me install anything, but my hopes are up there that the developer community will figure out something down the road. Adding WhatsApp, Hebrew Input, and some essential jewish software (calendar, various texts, etc.) will really make this phone that much more useful.

To quote the response from my son's yeshiva to certain phones that technically do have ability to browse the internet (paraphrasing): "We have no problem with that phone, it is a form of torture to browse online with that phone".

IINM that is currently only in the Korean market.

VZW uses unique LTE bands, so unless a phone was designed to be truly universal, not very likely.

Wow, just what I need. Is it an unlocked phone? Would it work with GSM carriers in the US?>

This doesn't support GSM, it works only on LTE, and probably doesn't support LTE bands of carriers other than Verizon in the US.

I am almost ready to give up on this phone. The flip format with physical keypad and light weight are the major things still keeping me on it, but otherwise there are many cons (bad sound quality, bad reception, no outside screen to see who's calling or to see time).

I am actually toying with the idea to switch to the Apple watch, now that it can make phone calls and send and receive texts, but I'm afraid it might have some issues.

I think this one does an outside screen, no? Also why would it have bad reception if it works on LTE?

I have it. You are welcome to see it in action.

I can only compare it to the reception I had with my iPhone, and I can tell you that it isn't as good. It supports less bands than the iPhone does. Also, the iPhone supports 3G, not only 4G while the LG only supports 4G LTE on VERIZON bands.

Also forgot to mention that bluetooth doesn't always connect automatically in my car.

And by the english select phone keyboard, when typing you`ll see the option T9.
If you can`t uncheck the chinese select (the chinese keyboard) as QWERTY keyboard.

type with touch screen it should come up the phone keyboard, on the right side of the keyboard the second row should say T9, select that and it will work on your actual phone keyboard.

Okay so I went to the Samsung Cn site and use google translate and it looks like they have a whole series os flip smart phones since 2014 and they keep on releasing newer phones every year.

I bought this on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/332209923375?rmvSB=true as the Folder 2  but based on Samsung's site its the old Folder phone and this (see link) is the newer folder 2 https://www.samsung.com/cn/smartphones/galaxy-folder2/SM-G1650ZKECHC/

Makes sense?

Not sure if this will end up helping me, but your post is really appreciated. I have another issue with this phone, which is its bluetooth connectivity. Often loses connectivity to car audio system. I've experienced this in different cars, so I think I can safely assume it's the phone and not the car audio system.

Always excited to see at least a few more people are working towards similar goals.

I'm mostly trying to get fb messeneger lite on mine for the push notifications, but will probably add a few other apps if it works eventually.

As far as bluetooth, I don't use it very much, and even less with cars, so I have nothing off the top of my head, but I'll keep an eye out.

Unlocked is not enough information. An iPhone, or a Pixel works on all currently available networks or bands. I don't think that a flip phone exists which could work on any network. Once you know the network ,you can figure out what works. (Or do you also need it to work in the UK or other countries).

So for AT&T network you need something that works on their 3G bands.

First try to see what AT&T offers.

TERRIBLE battery life (especially when used as Hotspot), and despite running a crippled version of Android, won't sync contacts with Google account. Luckily Verizon has Message+ which allows me to text from other devices.

Oh do I wish for a flip phone with Apple build quality (and universal GSM and LTE band compatibility). Despite it's shortcomings, the ability to have a lightweight phone that can be operated with one hand, without having two eyes on it for dialing, and with good tactile feedback, is just difficult to give up.

Any feedback on the Kyocera LTE flip from Verizon?
Haven't seen it yet. But in the past I considered getting the non-LTE version of the Kyocera DuraXV. One of the reasons I didn't was because I found there to be an annoying delay between key presses and actual phone response/action.

Quick review:
The  thin metalic case remind me of the Peak device.

Keyboard is cheap'y feeling

I dont see how to go to the home screen or review messages while talking on the phone. (you can compose and send emails while on the phone, but cant view them)

Syncs very nicely with Microsoft Exchange, but only the emails, and all folders. Not the exchange contacts.

No email attachments

No tethering without a plan.

Even if phone is set to vibrate, if you mistakenly hit the volume button on the side, it will go off vibrate.

From what I read, the Kyocera Cadence LTE supports even less bands than the VN220 (aka Exalt LTE). Based on specs It seems like its only (or main) advantage over the VN220 is an outside screen.

Okay...so my good ol' Gousto 3 started making problems...first, the vibration was only doing a single vibrate (a problem pretty common with this model) and then started cracking of pieces...so I needed to get a new one. Well, they don't activate 3G phones anymore (and anyhow a million and a half dropped calls every day). And only the LG can be taken care by TAG, so the choice is pretty much no-choice, the LG Exalt LTE.

I'm on Verizon Prepaid and was always having a phone for under 15 bucks...and this baby costs a nice $150 and up! Until I found this eBay listing (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Verizon-LG-Exalt-LTE-VN220-Silver-4G-Flip-Phone-Phone/142804121866?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649) that after an offer and counter offer I got it for $115. Still x10 the price of my Gousto...

RIP 3G  :'( :'(

Honestly, I donít know why anyone would need TAG to ďtake care ofĒ the LG Exalt LTE. Only semi-practical internet use on it is as a hotspot (and that really drains the battery).

Any local TAG can do it, call them up before. Livingent released the method for it free of charge לטובת הכלל (was mentioned here https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=93301.15), see below a picture of it and announcements by one of the TAGs and Geder Filter (also Livingent):

Protecting the Basic 4G LTE Phone "LG Exalt VN220"

"Signal Faded; Call Was Lost" sounds familiar? This or similar messages is what most Verizon Basic Phone users are experiencing lately. Well, this is the beginning of the end of the 2G/3G era.

Users of most of the basic phones which rely on the 3G network have seen a significant amount of call drops and poor service throughout the nation. This is a direct result of the many dead spots of the old network which is no longer being maintained & slowly being faded out by the carriers, using the space for the 4G/5G generation. The issue is currently primarily with the Verizon Network, but will very soon follow with Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile.

While Verizon offers a number of Basic Phones which run on the 4G Network, some of them are not yet capable of being protected properly. Protections for all of the models are in different stages of development, which we will announce upon their release.

Today, TAG is happy to announce the release of a secure measure to protect the ďLG Exalt VN220Ē. With this new method, a product released by the Livigent Filtering Firm, we are able to certify the phone up to the highest level of a secure Kosher Talk-Only Phone.

Purchase the phone at your favored retailer, activate the wireless service of your choice, then bring it to us to get it protected & sealed.

Please note: The protection of this device is permanent and non-reversible.

Let's stay safe together,

Can open all kind of attachments including PDFs (also Word and Excel), although not very useable size... It basically hs a full Mobisystems OfficeSuite (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.office&hl=en_US) in it (but I didn't find a way to open the app if not by opening a document already on the device and then going to the menu.)
Honestly, I donít know why anyone would need TAG to ďtake care ofĒ the LG Exalt LTE. Only semi-practical internet use on it is as a hotspot (and that really drains the battery).
Compared to a normal smartphone, that is. It has a fully functional web browser on which you can watch videos and what not. Not saying that it is the worsed possible device, but can still be pretty harmful if unblocked. (Of course, I'm only talking for the folks that in generally accepted that kind of approach to tech.)

Seems like the list of pros is getting bigger,

On Kyocera cadence you can easily go to home screen, send/view messages while phone calls,
You can open email attachment,
You can set up mobile hotspot without a plan.

Kyocera vs LG Exalt

Kyocera pros:
T9 is kind of better, you get a full layout, vs switching by pressing the 0
You can open PDF files
Email attachment (Office Suite)
Hotspot without plan
Verizon cloud (sync contacts)
Texting while on phone call
Outside screen
Kyocera con:
No video recording/player

LG Exalt Pro:
Video recording/player
LG Exalt Con:
Switch words on T9 by pressing the 0 only
No PDF viewer
No Hotspot without plan
No Verizon cloud (sync contacts)
No Texting while on phone call (although there's workaround)
No Outside screen

Yes, see below on my Exalt (with the Livigent block.)

Two other pros for the Exalt is:
1) The internet blocking is more secure and cannot be factory reset (for whom this matters.)
2) Much much more comfortable UI and options (I have used both, and while it is very hard to describe it is just much better.)

The easy way, if you know who's texting you or you wanna text someone in your contacts, while you on a phone call press the right soft key select contacts at the contact you have the option to send message.

phone came today with this "in order to partially offset the subsidy Verizon ... this phone may only be used with Verizon Prepaid service for 1 yr/ until $50 in payments are received"

Does that mean I have to go through the trouble of manually unlocking it? Is that even possible? I'm not very familiar with unlocking "sugya", can anyone explain in laymen's terms if I'd need to/how I should for Red Pocket Mobile.
Thanks

"in laymen's terms" this is a Verizon Prepaid phone and cannot be used for anything else before using it for a year on Verizon prepaid.

Ime it has to be active for 6 months on Verizon prepaid before you can activate it on MNVOís

There is no unlocking on Verizon , itís not that the phone is locked, the only (illegal) way is to change the ESN number which not many people do these days

Got news?
Looks like it only supports LTE bands 4 & 13, T-mobile utilizes 2,4,12,66,71 so the only matching band would be 4

See this https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/6k9ztf/will_i_survive_without_band_2_lte_in_the_nyc_area/

I was looking around for smart flip phones and don't recall the ZTE Cymbal-T. When was it released? I see it supports 4G. If its a good phone and the apps work well I would totally ditch the folder and buy this. I just can't find too many places which sell it new which needs an explanation...

Would it work with Verizon?

I never used the Galaxy Folder to compare, but I own - not using much just as a toy... - a Cymbal-T and it is decent.

While the phone is sold as Tracfone Prepaid it seems to be fully compatible with Verizon's network, you gotta understand that Tracfone is just an MVNO using different carriers for different phone models, but you still might have a hard time to got Verizon to activater it (see https://www.frequencycheck.com/carrier-compatibility/7Nj1HV/zte-z353vl-cymbal-t-lte/verizon-wireless-united-states)

There's the Cymbal LTE and the Cymbal-T, 2 completely different devices. The first is a Verizon feature phone based on Android, the 2nd one is a Tracfone full Android filp-phone.

There is the Cymbal LTE:

I did not.

Taken from online info and experience in the past with different devices. If the device is not officially a VZW device (the IMEI is probably registered for Tracfone) VZW might not activate - or at least not easily - the phone. Since this device uses a SIM, if you can get the SIM active in another phone you might be able to switch it to this.

The cymbal LTE is a very slow responding phone. If you have a few hundred contacts, it will take at least 30 seconds every time you open the contacts in order for you to be able to search.
When you want to make a call, you canít just start typing the phone number. You have to open the dialer app and then dial and call itís very annoying

So I got the Cymbal-T.

It's indeed running on the 4G network, but there's no option as far as I can tell to activate VoLTE.

In this case does it mean that in regards to phone calls, the phone will run on the 3G network? (which sucks...)

Not at all what I would like to see, but I guess there's a market for this.

There are a few elements to the flip phone that are desirable, not all are important to everyone

1. The clamshell form factor.
2. Physical keys.
3. Long life, durability and simplicity.

That being said, there are certain elements of today's smartphones that are hard to give up:

a. Contact synchronization.
b. Whatsapp communications.
c. Banking and financial transactions.
d. Multilingual support.
e. Maps and navigation.

Where do we strike a good balance?

KaiOS?

Red pocket works on all 4 carriers. You have to know if itís red pocket Verizon, sprint, T-Mobile or att.

And if you are using a flip phone you probably donít use data. Then you have better options
The cheapest talk and text plan that I know of are
On the Verizon network u.s.mobile totals ~ $14
On the sprint network  tello ~ $10
On the AT&T network freeUp $10
On the T-Mobile network ultra mobile ~ $ 12
I wrote ~ because of the taxes vary from state to state

Kyocera vs LG Exalt

Kyocera pros:
T9 is kind of better, you get a full layout, vs switching by pressing the 0
You can open PDF files
Email attachment (Office Suite)
Hotspot without plan
Verizon cloud (sync contacts)
Texting while on phone call
Outside screen
Kyocera con:
No video recording/player

LG Exalt Pro:
Video recording/player
LG Exalt Con:
Switch words on T9 by pressing the 0 only
No PDF viewer
No Hotspot without plan
No Verizon cloud (sync contacts)
No Texting while on phone call (although there's workaround)
No Outside screen
.

I wrote ~ because of the taxes vary from state to state
This plan requires restarting after every 2000 minutes used - in middle of the month, no?

Yup going up to $20 plus tax
For $10 you get 1000 minutes

I think now the cheapest on Verizon will be red pocket mobile annual plan bought on ebay or amazon . Totals around $18 a month

do any of these include canada?
Tello and ultra Mobile include calls to Canada. But not roaming in Canada.
Ultra you can add extra money to be able to roam . Iirc itís .25 per minute

Here's the answer:

Quote
First of all, thank you for being a part of the US Mobile family. Weíre writing to let you know that the cost of the unlimited talk and text plan will be increasing by $10/month. This will apply to all monthly plans beginning August 22, 2019.

96% of our customers use less than 1,000 minutes of talk per month. Your bill can remain the same if you switch to our new "1,000 minutes and unlimited text" plan. So take a look at our plans to decide what you need before your next cycle.

Its own Android-based build, same with the Kyocera flip.

A popular KaiOS phone is the Alcatel Go Flip which I don't think has any kosherizing solution yet.

The difference - and why it might be tougher to accomplish it with KaiOS - is that is not really Android-based, it is Linux based and they try to make some stuff compatible but it is a whole different Animal (unlike the LG and Kyocera devices that are pure Android just sliimed down and restricted.)

The closest is the TracFone ZTE Cymbal-T LTE Android Flip.

I was aware that the link is for a different phone. The 2720 and the 800 tough are being released concurrently with similar software.

What makes you think there's a US version being released. From what I see there isn't one yet, so I doubt whether it will support VoLTE (or all US LTE bands for that matter) at this point, which is rather sad. I really can't understand why they don't release truly global phones like the iPhone, Google phones, and several Motorola phones.

OK, got the Kyocera...and let me put it this way - if I were to write a review, not sure if it would belong here or in the "jokes" thread. The first nd most obvious thing is the predictive text - in what world does typing in 2-6-3 have the phone come up with "cod" as being more likely than "and?" And if there's a 1-letter word that I can get by typing the "2" key...yup, you got it, the most likely guess by the Kyocera is the word..."b"!

Not sure how dumb the architect of this job had to be to figure out that once I'm at a certain contract let's say it starts with letter Z, there's no way to get back to the search field other by wasting 15 minutes to move up to the top of the contacts

Can the Kyocera Cadence Verizon Prepaid phone be used for Sprint?
I tried putting in a postpaid Sprint Sim but Sprint says they are unable to activate it. I do have the unlock code already despite that I haven't been active for 60 days (or $50). Perhaps I need to wait it out even though I already have unlock code.

How basic do you want to go? You can get a blue phone for $20, and it has no access to data whatsoever so you can put whatever sim you want in it and itll still be t&t
Edit. I see you can get from amazon for 16.60. But doesnt even have a full keyboard or t9

Got the phone on Friday. Will elaborate  more tomorrow.

On the first glance its not impressive.

Max 2000 contacts so it couldn't sync all my google contacts. When you are on a call you can not access any other screen / app like text email or whats app.

I can fix all that, its a  easy fix. I built most of the kosher softwares people use like the Kyocera from Approved Link or the Alcatel 4044 from Tag.

Though base on https://nokiapoweruser.com/nokia-800-tough-specifications-release-date-photos-price-more/ I would be afraid that it might not include US bands.

Huh? I don't think the phone was released that far back.

I would love to see an unlocked JIOPhone 2 that will work on US (and Israeli) networks and have Hebrew available. That could be a game changer.

Finally we got an expert here. I have the LG Exalt LTE with a Verizon plan and it sucks, no front screen, loses service as entering a house and of course the inability of doing anything while on a call, I'm not familiar with kyocera or alectel, what is the best option for me without the above bugs?

So it looks like you have poor service with Verizon, if Verizon offers wifi calling you can try the Alcatel V from Verizon, its been made kosher by me and Tag has the ability to flash it Kosher for you.

For lack of better option (i thought) i got the alcatel go/smart flip but it was terrible and i am returning it after 3 weeks of use. I would like to right a review so no one has to deal with it.  I didn't notice any pros, the good parts were when it wasn't acting up. The cons were many, 1) there are more steps than necessary in doing many tasks 2) searching for contacts is impossible, when you search for contact starting with the letter M it doesn't do that, rather it brings up the first contact that has an M (eg instead of bringing up Max it will bring up Adam), which is beyond frustrating 3) there is no general contact history so you cannot see the last time someone called you except by scrolling through the call log 4) when typing using T9 the system constantly sticks in random numbers 5) if you dont restart it once a day everything will work much slower or malfunction (eg doesn't pick up calls when you flip it open). These were my biggest frustrations but there were more, overall it is not a good phone and i would not recommend it even for a purely talk phone.

Can have apps? Whats app?

No, only what they provide. They say it will never have any social media. Does that mean it will never have Whatsapp? Possibly.

Quote
What are the features?
Out of the box, the Light Phone II's core functionality includes calls, messages as well as an alarm and hotspot.

There is a customizable toolbox menu for the phone in which you can add/remove various additional features to your Light Phone II. These tools are in development and will be released ongoing as they become available. We're working closely with our early adopters to design these tools.

While considering additional functionality for the Light Phone II, it's important to remember all of the features it will never have. The Light Phone II will never have social media, email, news, or ads. Our tools are intentional, and there is a clear objective in opening the tool. There will never be an infinite feed. The device itself, with a small black and white screen, reflects this philosphy and inherently limits the phone's functionality.

Why do you think it's UNACCEPTABLE? It's mostly a גדר some people take in themselves to be farther from technological things.

(There is however an issue some point out that in text it's much less shameful to communicate inappropriately than there is over the phone.)

You should be more detailed what you include in "everything else". But anything not related at all to internet works same as without the block.

Meaning will it stop the camera / the video function?

Just curious when one blocks the actual internet entirely any chance the hotspot on such a small phone would work?

Meaning will it stop the camera / the video function?

Just curious when one blocks the actual internet entirely any chance the hotspot on such a small phone would work?
It does not stop anyting about the camera and video.

Hotspot can technically work with "the internet" (which means basically browsing and web connectivity), though not sure if they allow it to remain open.

Seems like you're a bit knowledgeable in this area, if one goes ahead and put the filter to block the internet on that phone does everything else work properly?

Nope, not knowledgeable. I'm glad @Yisroel Tech is helping you.  :)

Could someone please explain to me the problem with texting. Why is it unacceptable?
Texting can be very detrimental to a yeshiva bochur. It can bring his head elsewhere. Picture texts make it MUCH worse since it makes it very easy to get pictures you would not approve of from "friends/enemies" depending on your perspective. Even plain text makes it easy to get onto inappropriate chats.

Why do you think it's UNACCEPTABLE? It's mostly a גדר some people take in themselves to be farther from technological things.

(There is however an issue some point out that in text it's much less shameful to communicate inappropriately than there is over the phone.)

The reason I think some find it unacceptable is that Kosher phones and phone lines in Israel have no texting. My question is what seems to be the issue that causes texting to be banned?

Picture "texts" are MMS. I can understand blocking those, and it's much simpler to block those. But I think at this point in time plain texting has become an efficient way of communicating short messages, without the intrusion of a phone call.

Even plain phone calls can get into inappropriate chats. Where's the difference?

Isn't that only possible with a smartphone - which presumably a good Bachur wouldn't have anyway?

Hey guys,

I noticed a lot of you guys were trying to get apps on the LG Exalt and other 4G flip phones.

Checkout www.apps4flip.com, it features a small selection of apps modified to be installable on the LG and other phones.

Hey, someone claiming here (http://www.ivelt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2115455#p2115455) that this app steals the users data and location. Anything you know about it?

According to that person's claims, it does not only "call home" (which would mean a network request, and I would understand it for statistics purposes), but it sends your location and steals your contacts etc as well...

If it were a Chinese website, I would fear that. Did you read the "about" section of that website? Why not ask these guys straight out?

No reason not to ask... I actually sent them an email. But in the meantime people should be aware of it.

The developers responded, they very to much understand there concern and are already finishing up a solution that would not include it.

Message 1:

We apologize, we commissioned a developer to build in analytics and we did not realize how deep it went.

We have shut down the site until we have a fix available without the data collection.
We have also deleted all data that was collected.

Message 2:

The issue is now fully fixed.

All collected data has been deleted by our developer.

The Data collection mechanism has been permanently disabled at the server level for users with the old apk, and we have released a new apk without any data collection at all.

We will be turning the site back on soon.

Another lesson, don't assume bad intent...

I'm not a developer (I wasn't the one to find it, I just brought it here), but I did a scan on it and this data collection capability seems to be removed.

We still don't know if it was bad or not, whether anyone in the chain had malicious intent

Is there a significant practical difference between a data breach due to bad intent or due to poor quality control?

"The browser" no. But if you have one of those blocks installed by TAG etc this will also be blocked.
