So if you're gonna shlepp the family with you anyway, let it be a nice place that the wife and kids will enjoy too. I understand it's more of a shclepp when it's farther, but I think if it's gonna be a Shabbaton with the wife and kids it just makes more sense to be near something nice.

:D Reminds me of the Chabad shull in Venice. Over there if you get an Aliya and want to give a donation, you have to give it in their currency = Learn something extra in Chassidus or Nigle (they take cash too for Aliyos, but only after a spiritual donation first...)

Another place to consider is the Poconos, it's not too far from NY/NJ and there's lots to do there. (not sure what's available as far as hotels though)

You have Bushkill Falls and it's trails there - the Niagara of PA. It is kids friendly. (Although I was there July fourth last year and it seemed to be running low on water at the time).

They know most people come for the vacation and don't buy but if 10 - 15 couples do it together is can be a a little bit of an issue :)
Just some other ideas: Atlantic City (Plenty of non gambling family activities in the area), Lake George (Mostly mom & Pop hotels though), There is a catagory 3 SPG across the street from Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA if most people have small kids.

If the point of this Shabbathon is a long weekend and family getaway then it might pay to travel far to a place like Niagra. However, chances are there will be a lot less people since it is probably not convenient for most people will full time jobs and kids.
If the point is just to spend a nice Shabbos together (similar to the NYC DO but on a larger scale) then a local NJ hotel should be fine. If there is an pool where the kids can swim on friday and M"S and we get a conference room to hang out what more do we need? Its not like you can tour on shabbos!!! If you want to make a bigger trip then check out Sunday morning and take the family on a day trip.

I am in middle of planning larger family shabbos at a hotel( payed with points) complete with a minyan and meeting room and will keep posting as I gather more info. As I have posted elsewhere on the forums, the NJ sheratons (edison, eatontown, meadowlands, and AC) wouldnt let me bring outside food and insisted that I use a kosher caterer through their caterer for all food in public areas (ie:meeting rooms) of the hotel which will run $1500 (union wait staff required) before food. Marriott (Courtyard, Fairfield, and Residence Inn) have been much more reasonable and allow outside food as long as you sign a liability waiver . Rates on meeting rooms at Marriott seem to run about $500 for Fri. afternoon through Motza'ai Shabbos ($300 for shabbos and $150 for Fri. +tax.). This is still a work in progress and will keep posting as it progressesplainbachur has just informed me that you can bring outside food but the rate for the meeting room is $1500 + tax(8%?)

motzai shabbos at least in the winter is not as bad.
Also maybe see if you can convince them to allow all rooms to be opened for points/award nights since that will get the hotel sold out...
And if this works out make sure they are aware that everyone will be rushing to checkin around the same time. 1-4pm

2) The events manager is going to look into the possibilities for the Shabbaton. She said there are a few events going on that day, with several caterers working in the kitchen. She said we would have to bring a caterer in (they have a few they've worked with in the past) to cook there - they don't allow outside food in - but even so she has to see whether there is room for another caterer to be working in the kitchen. I suggested the idea of having a caterer prepare food at an outside facility and just warm it up in the kitchen, and she said she'll look into it. My idea with the last one is to buy POM food and have a DDFer be a "caterer" who officially supervises the kitchen work.
3) Didn't even discuss parking yet.
4) Event manager will also look into how many rooms are booked for Saturday night. If it's quieter (which she said is usually not the case), then we can talk about staying in the rooms till Shabbos is over. Obviously, checking out at noon and leaving bags at the front desk is a possibility, but that would mean no naps and everyone would have to hang out in the lounges/conference room all day... How long is that "all day" on a Winter Shabbos by the time the meal is done? Probably not very long.
If Shacharis is at 8:30/9 and done by 10:30-11, you send everyone back to their rooms to pack while a few set up lunch. Lunch at 12 (which is checkout anyway) and it's over at 2-3. You Daven Mincha and chill for and hour and then eat Shalosh Seudos and it's over. Unless we have babies that need naps, checking out at 12 might not be such an issue. If only a few people have kids that need naps, it would probably be easier to convince them to let us keep 5 rooms till 5PM than 20 rooms.

That's all assuming you don't mind doing hachana on shabbosI asked about this in the past and would ask again, but IIRC I was told that I could put my stuff in my suitcase in the morning and before Shabbos have worked out with the hotel that they check me out and bring my bags down to storage for me.

Maybe create a wiki whos in to get a better feel of how many rooms were talking about. Heres hoping it works outSure, that can be done, but it doesn't seem like rooms would be the issue. I think there's no point in seriously considering this further until we hear back from the events manager on Monday as to whether we can get a conference room, late checkout, and bring in Kosher food.

At 13 bedrooms fitting 30 people I assume there's 4 bedrooms with 3 beds and 9 bedrooms with 2. Either way the max would be 13 couples and that's if (big if) they can fit all their kids in their bedroom on blow ups/pak and plays.
That's $284 per couple. Kosher and eating would probably be much simpler than a hotel but on the flip side, people would need to bring blow ups/pak and plays. Would probably be better for warmer weather when the outdoors can also be utilized.
There's 14 bathrooms but since this was originally built as a residential home, there probably aren't bathrooms in every single room. While that sounds crazy compared to a hotel, when being a guest at someone's house you would be okay with sharing a bathroom so it's not soo crazy with people that you are hanging out with as friends anyway.

Yes over Shabbos phone chargers, printers shouldn't be used? The printer fire happened in the middle of the night on a weeknight while the printer was just sitting plugged in.

2 of us booked, and then others joined.
The issue in this hotel was that they would not allow food in the conference room iirc. So we were very limited with space.
Only had as much space as a suite would allow.

All and all, whatever the reason is, it's your call and you choose not to be with us. Your loss.

So if you've never been to a DO and have no clue who anyone else is, don't expect to be invited to a shabbos DO. How should I know that I can trust your karshrus? DDF has the benefits of having people from all spectrums and everyone has their own opinion regarding kashrus.

I'll be 100% honest. IMHO the reason it was able to work out so well, is because most of the people there met each other previously and knew each other. I don't think I'd go to a random shabbos DO with someone I literally met online and have no clue who they are.I think this should be obvious, and not just because of the food. A shabbos isn't a DO. Additionally, if you're spending shabbos with your friends, you'd rather not have a bunch of strangers getting in the way. Of course, if one of your friends knows somebody and says he would be compatible, he'd be welcomed, but the core group would be a bunch of friends, i would think. Forget about the food and the kashrus; do you want to have a joint meal with a bunch of people you don't know from a hole in the wall? A DO is a great non committal way to meet strangers; a shabbos not run by a central program, maybe not so much. The problem is that everyone wants to be that fly on the wall that gets in on the sooper seekrets. A low level shabbos may not generate so much interest, but when people hear about a bunch of "names" that were involved, they get upset that they didn't have a chance to join. My opinion? Get together a couple of your personal friends from DDF (anybody expecting to go to a ddf shabbaton must have a couple of those), and once you have a core group, invite people that you think would be interested and compatible based on what you know about them. It'll get a lot further than being a silent guy on a friendly WhatsApp group, that is the first to pipe up when someone suggests a get together. Just my $.02. The actual food prep was difficult, and big props to all those that contributed to that. :) A special shout out to the guy that got the sefer torah.
That being said, it was fairly well publicized, I would guess that at least 50-75 ppl had heard abt it before Wednesday. I had personally met abt 5/10 men beforehand. However there were some I had never met before, and am glad I did now.
I'd like to do something like this again, and hope to sometime in the next few months. (early shabbos does make things a little more difficult)

Ideas where?I was initially thinking about the Hilton Philadelphia Penns Landing as it is halfway between NY and Baltimore. It is also close to shuls and to free exhibits (open on shabbos). However Morristown Hyatt seems more practical though. Unless you have a better suggestion.

With peoples Hyatt DSU's expiring today, and the Hyatt SSH being a gorgeous 5 star resort hotel with rates starting at $65 a night, I would want to spend Shabbos there sometime in the next few weeks provided that we have a Minyan. We'd bring tons of kosher food and can have great meals etc. Please let me know if you'd be interested. I'm obviously not interested in a discussion about why you would or would not be interested

it depends. Some older Sheratons in Cat 3-4 are old, smelly, and not updated. Some new Four Points are cheaper and in Cat 2-3, but their showers, carpeting, and amenities are newer..
