Title: Shabbaton DO Master Thread
Post by: Dan on April 05, 2011, 12:59:20 PM
The idea of a Shabbaton DO was mentioned at the NYC DDF DO.

Any thoughts as to the feasibility of such an idea?

I think it is a great idea!!! We should do it sometime during the summer.

Sounds like fun. I'd probably be interested. What city are you thinking of doing it in?

Every second word at this DO will likely be 'nisht oif shabbos geredt' ;D

In Niagara Falls youl have a harder time finding a caterer, maybe some one from Toronto? I'm sure in NJ it will come out much cheaper

2 weekend nights in the category 2 hotel would be 6,000 points or 3,200 points+$60.
Food?  No idea.  Would depend where we got it from.

I think NJ will make more sense as most of us are from the the Tri-State area and can't necessarily travel (Job, Kids....). I can possibly arrange a hotel with use of the conference room for very reasonable in Somerset, NJ.  Dan, PM me.

I'll set up a poll.
What should the options be?
Title: Re: Shabbaton DO?
Post by: YOSEF on April 05, 2011, 02:21:51 PM
I think the poll should also garner information, such as
highly consider if in NJ
highly consider if in Niagra
highly consider either way, prefer NJ
highly consider either way, prefer Niagra
think NJ is better
think Niagra is better
Let me know when there are more details: $$$, dates, etc.

There is nothing around the hotel as it is in a business district which is why I can get it for so cheap on weekends. We'll have nice rooms, a conference room to farbreng and each other. What more do we need??? If its about a DD Shabbathon then why do we all need to schlep to Niagra falls. Keep that for family trips!!!

The Aliyos can only be bought with MR, SPG or CO, DL would be a bizayon hatorah.
DD Elite members can buy low fare aliyos and waitlist for Maftir. If they dont clear then they have the option to bump and hope for avail at Kriyas hatorah by Mincha.

Keep that for family trips!!!

I'm assuming that the married people would bring their families with them whether it's in the try-state or far away Niagara. So if you're gonna shlepp the family with you anyway, let it be a nice place that the wife and kids will enjoy too. I understand it's more of a shclepp when it's farther, but I think if it's gonna be a Shabbaton with the wife and kids it just makes more sense to be near something nice.

That's my thought too.  How about everyone else?
Make it someplace that the family can also enjoy or a business hotel that's closer by?

:D Reminds me of the Chabad shull in Venice. Over there if you get an Aliya and want to give a donation, you have to give it in their currency = Learn something extra in Chassidus or Nigle (they take cash too for Aliyos, but only after a spiritual donation first...)

seems to me that unless everybody plans on leaving their wives & kids behind a local business hotel probably won't cut it.

While I'm interested in theory, I have no idea at this point if I'll be able to make it or not...

Another place to consider is the Poconos, it's not too far from NY/NJ and there's lots to do there. (not sure what's available as far as hotels though)

You have Bushkill Falls and it's trails there - the Niagara of PA. It is kids friendly. (Although I was there July fourth last year and it seemed to be running low on water at the time).

We can all do times share presentations in the Poconos and get a free weekend at a place like Split Rock Resort http://www.splitrockresort.com. Not sure if they they have conference or banquet rooms for the meals though.

They know most people come for the vacation and don't buy but if 10 - 15 couples do it together is can be a a little bit of an issue :)

Just some other ideas: Atlantic City (Plenty of non gambling family activities in the area), Lake George (Mostly mom & Pop hotels though), There is a catagory 3 SPG across the street from Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA if most people have small kids.

Is there a SPG property in the  Poconos? The mahla of jersey is there are plenty of nice SPG's around to keep it affordable, if you have to pay for two nights & bigger family's have to book two rooms plus food its going to be expensive!

My 2 cents:

If the point of this Shabbathon is a long weekend and family getaway then it might pay to travel far to a place like Niagra. However, chances are there will be a lot less people since it is probably not convenient for most people will full time jobs and kids.

If the point is just to spend a nice Shabbos together (similar to the NYC DO but on a larger scale) then a local NJ hotel should be fine. If there is an pool where the kids can swim on friday and M"S and we get a conference room to hang out what more do we need? Its not like you can tour on shabbos!!! If you want to make a bigger trip then check out Sunday morning and take the family on a day trip.

Has a shabbaton DO ever worked? We might as well have a thread DD user meets fellow DD user. At this stage, I still don't see it as being realistic for people to travel to a location for shabbat not for work, or holiday, simply for a meeting.

My issues had nothing to do with kashrus.

I am in middle of planning larger family shabbos  at a hotel( payed with points) complete with a minyan and meeting room and will keep posting as I gather more info. As I have posted elsewhere on the forums, the NJ sheratons (edison, eatontown, meadowlands, and AC) wouldnt let me bring outside food and insisted that I use a kosher caterer through their caterer for all food in public areas (ie:meeting rooms) of the hotel which will run $1500 (union wait staff required) before food. Marriott (Courtyard, Fairfield, and Residence Inn) have been much more reasonable and allow outside food as long as you sign a liability waiver . Rates on meeting rooms at Marriott seem to run about $500 for Fri. afternoon through Motza'ai Shabbos ($300 for shabbos and $150 for Fri. +tax.). This is still a work in progress and will keep posting as it progresses
plainbachur has just informed me that you can bring outside food but the rate for the meeting room is $1500 + tax(8%?)

I'd be willing to drive 2-3 hours to make it happen. Doesn't have to be NY-Metro.

Actually 9 days and traveling for pleasure may be an issue. So if we make this about business it may work better. Or wait for a better week of the summer.

@Dan any chance you'd ask your aunt and uncle for their beach house for a weekend? Or just a Sunday?

I understand that. Was more along the lines of chipping down for catered food, or having people make/bring something.

But then you have the whole issue of "whose hasgacha is the food under" and people not "trusting" other DDF'ers kitchens etc.

no, why
Title: Re: Shabbaton DO?

Because people work? I personally can't leave the office on a Friday before ~2PM. In the winter, that makes it impossible to make it home and then to a hotel. In the summer, that's still doable (and I could probably still get out by ~2PM).

Agreed! There no such thing as getting permission to take off at my job. You take off, you lose an PTO day. Taking off a Friday for a DDFaton is not exactly worth it for the average DDFer who wants to save all those days for real trips.

How about the Sheraton in Stanford next shabbos? I'll be there anyway for my wife's school's Shabbaton and will be bored out of my mind. Some company other than MO HSlers would be nice. Wife won't let me go anywhere else.

Yes. I'm giving the CH seminar on Weds, a seminar to the shluchim on Thursday, and the banquet is Sunday night.

True. Was just throwing it out there.

Not bad. And oooh! I have one of those!

I would still have to leave work early which I won't know whether I can do till Thursday probably. It's near lower Manhattan which means I need an hour from when I get home to get there.

Ohhh didn't realize it was that long of a trip. Nice.

Ok, well let's see what people think. Is there a way online to see how many rooms they have available for points/aniv night redemption?

Eh. Assuming it's available, it's not much more than getting a sefer torah and calling in an order to POM.
That was my concern.

Hmm... interesting. I'm going to call and see:
1) How many rooms are available with points
2) What's story with a conference room
3) What's the story with parking (the site says there's $32 overnight fee)
4) Staying in the rooms till Shabbos ends and only paying for Friday night

Any other Q's to ask?

motzai shabbos at least in the winter is not as bad.

Also maybe see if you can convince them to allow all rooms to be opened for points/award nights since that will get the hotel sold out...

And if this works out make sure they are aware that everyone will be rushing to checkin around the same time. 1-4pm

Just called the hotel.
1) There are at least 9 king bedrooms available and 9 double bedrooms that are bookable with points/anniversay nights. I say 'at least' because the reservations agent wasn't able to see all the rooms, just "at least 9 per each room type".
2) The events manager is going to look into the possibilities for the Shabbaton. She said there are a few events going on that day, with several caterers working in the kitchen. She said we would have to bring a caterer in (they have a few they've worked with in the past) to cook there - they don't allow outside food in - but even so she has to see whether there is room for another caterer to be working in the kitchen. I suggested the idea of having a caterer prepare food at an outside facility and just warm it up in the kitchen, and she said she'll look into it. My idea with the last one is to buy POM food and have a DDFer be a "caterer" who officially supervises the kitchen work.
3) Didn't even discuss parking yet.
4) Event manager will also look into how many rooms are booked for Saturday night. If it's quieter (which she said is usually not the case), then we can talk about staying in the rooms till Shabbos is over. Obviously, checking out at noon and leaving bags at the front desk is a possibility, but that would mean no naps and everyone would have to hang out in the lounges/conference room all day... How long is that "all day" on a Winter Shabbos by the time the meal is done? Probably not very long.
If Shacharis is at 8:30/9 and done by 10:30-11, you send everyone back to their rooms to pack while a few set up lunch. Lunch at 12 (which is checkout anyway) and it's over at 2-3. You Daven Mincha and chill for and hour and then eat Shalosh Seudos and it's over. Unless we have babies that need naps, checking out at 12 might not be such an issue. If only a few people have kids that need naps, it would probably be easier to convince them to let us keep 5 rooms till 5PM than 20 rooms.

I'm still going to work on it (again, perhaps if it's only a few people with kids we can get after Shabbos checkout for those rooms) and otherwise, if people with kids don't want to deal with it, no one's forcing them to come.

Right, obviously having the rooms all day would be ideal. We'll have to wait and see what they say. After bringing the idea up to my wife, we're probably at a 50/50 that she'll be interested in coming, so that might still be a problem.

Sure, that can be done, but it doesn't seem like rooms would be the issue. I think there's no point in seriously considering this further until we hear back from the events manager on Monday as to whether we can get a conference room, late checkout, and bring in Kosher food.

Minimum 2 nights stay and it costs $3,700.

At 13 bedrooms fitting 30 people I assume there's 4 bedrooms with 3 beds and 9 bedrooms with 2.  Either way the max would be 13 couples and that's if (big if) they can fit all their kids in their bedroom on blow ups/pak and plays.

That's $284 per couple. Kosher and eating would probably be much simpler than a hotel but on the flip side, people would need to bring blow ups/pak and plays. Would probably be better for warmer weather when the outdoors can also be utilized.

There's 14 bathrooms but since this was originally built as a residential home, there probably aren't bathrooms in every single room. While that sounds crazy compared to a hotel, when being a guest at someone's house you would be okay with sharing a bathroom so it's not soo crazy with people that you are hanging out with as friends anyway.

As I said earlier you have to start with Dan. Then it could start getting serious.

Anyone else in for a shabbos in a hotel this week? Hershelsdeals & myself are in. Were looking at the Hyatt NB or Hyatt Morristown. Both are walking distance to a shul. But any other ideas are welcomed.
Bring your own food & hot plate of course.

Is that so? So I assume also, no more cars, airplanes, chanukah candles,  hiking, ......  someone I know had a printer that burst into flames and burned their house down so we should stop using printers too.
Using a crock pot, or leaving a stove on aren't any safer but since they weren't involved in this incident, they should be ok to use.

Can stay at the 4P next to Chabad and do meals by them. 4P is a Cat. 3 so 7K SPG/night. All 3 meals cost $100 total for adults and somewhat cheaper for kids. Perhaps a large group can work out a cheaper rate.

If guys are interested in replicating, it's really not terribly difficult to do. If 2 or 3 guys make reservations, you will instantly have others joining.  If you ponder and wonder and discuss you won't get anywhere.

Identify a hotel, book a few rooms for this weekend, post a maximum # of attendees based on the space available for eating/davening, and then just start co-coordinating who will bring food, paper goods, siddurim, etc etc.

This weekend is a holiday weekend and most people are off on Friday. Just take it and run with it. I'm pretty positive that if 2-3 people start it it will snowball. Your biggest issue will be trying to calm the masses of people who want to join that you have no room for.

If someone is seriously ready to arrange something PM me and I'll give you some guidance based on how we arranged ours.

exactly how we did it.
2 of us booked, and then others joined.
The issue in this hotel was that they would not allow food in the conference room iirc. So we were very limited with space.
Only had as much space as a suite would allow.

BTW, no one cares about your phone number, it's just your email where people send their inquiries about deals they missed out because of your broken email server and other impotent issues. Try it and you'll see. And you won't be able t try it with google voice. GV is something people will abuse. Just post your real number on on DD at the bottom of your email address and add in red lettering for emergencies only and I am sure you'll be good. Lets do it this way:
are there 2 people that wanna do this shabbos?
One person post here.
Someone else pm him and decide on location.
Once location decided, book.
Post here that you booked in xyz city and you're gonna limit it to x amount of guys.
Start a whatsapp group for whoever joins.
Plan between yourselves all the nitty gritty details.

Be willing to just go alone if nobody else joins.

I'll be 100% honest. IMHO the reason it was able to work out so well, is because most of the people there met each other previously and knew each other. I don't think I'd go to a random shabbos DO with someone I literally met online and have no clue who they are.

So if you've never been to a DO and have no clue who anyone else is, don't expect to be invited to a shabbos DO. How should I know that I can trust your karshrus? DDF has the benefits of having people from all spectrums and everyone has their own opinion regarding kashrus.

Just what I need, the entire Jewish world to have my cell phone number.

Could have sworn I saw someone say he was Dan in a group w an OH number. I guess it could have been another Dan but that's confusing.

I think this should be obvious, and not just because of the food. A shabbos isn't a DO. Most people would be game to go to a restaurant to meet new people without putting too much thought into it. If you like it, you stay; if not, you walk out politely, with nobody thinking twice. A shabbos is a much bigger commitment, and requires a higher comfort level. I would think most people would rather not spend shabbos with a bunch of strangers. Additionally, if you're spending shabbos with your friends, you'd rather not have a bunch of strangers getting in the way. Of course, if one of your friends knows somebody and says he would be compatible, he'd be welcomed, but the core group would be a bunch of friends, i would think. Forget about the food and the kashrus; do you want to have a joint meal with a bunch of people you don't know from a hole in the wall? A DO is a great non committal way to meet strangers; a shabbos not run by a central program, maybe not so much. The problem is that everyone wants to be that fly on the wall that gets in on the sooper seekrets. A low level shabbos may not generate so much interest, but when people hear about a bunch of "names" that were involved, they get upset that they didn't have a chance to join. My opinion? Get together a couple of your personal friends from DDF (anybody expecting to go to a ddf shabbaton must have a couple of those), and once you have a core group, invite people that you think would be interested and compatible based on what you know about them. It'll get a lot further than being a silent guy on a friendly WhatsApp group, that is the first to pipe up when someone suggests a get together. Just my $.02. (I have yet to hit up a DO, so I'm not really one to talk, but this same scenario and dynamics manifests itself in so many places.)

A great time was had by all and I made some new friends!

Haha.
Only knew 1/10, and that was from previous DO. It was fun meeting new people, but the fact that there was core group def helped.
And I've been to Shabbos meals by ppl I only knew from DDF

I think what happened here was that weekend plans were made privately by a group of ppl that happen to frequent ddf . Nobody has a problem with such events occurring as I'm sure they happen all the time. However when a public thank you went out on the shabbos do thread to all those who attended ppl misunderstood it as having been a public event which they missed out on and regretted not partaking in it.

Well I wouldn't consider you someone I know well, nor did we meet for only 10 minutes. Was more like a half hour.

So you now probably know 3/10.

Well if she ever calls me back, then a long term commitment could be had from such a shabbos.

There was a request to mention this DO on DDF, but as mentioned above, there were a couple primary reasons not to do so.

The first was lack of space, the hotel was extremely unaccommodating in that regard. The second was a lack of familiarity with other DDFers and having to rely on other's kashrus as most of the food was homemade. The actual food prep was difficult, and big props to all those that contributed to that. :)  A special shout out to the guy that got the sefer torah.

That being said, it was fairly well publicized, I would guess that at least 50-75 ppl had heard abt it before Wednesday. I had personally met abt 5/10 men beforehand. However there were some I had never met before, and am glad I did now.

I'd like to do something like this again, and hope to sometime in the next few months. (early shabbos does make things a little more difficult)

It wasn't hard to get the ball rolling, there were 2 couples ready to make shabbos alone. We ended up with a minyan, that was a big bonus.

Though I also think that the only reason it worked, because you had to 2 people that were planing on going anyways no matter who ended up coming and even if nobody else came they were going, and that is essential, nobody wants to be the first one to commit, but once you have that core, everyone else follows

All and all, whatever the reason is, it's your call and you choose not to be with us. Your loss.

I was initially thinking about the Hilton Philadelphia Penns Landing as it is halfway between NY and Baltimore. It is also close to shuls and to free exhibits (open on shabbos). However Morristown Hyatt seems more practical though. Unless you have a better suggestion.

With peoples Hyatt DSU's expiring today, and the Hyatt SSH being a gorgeous 5 star resort hotel with rates starting at $65 a night, I would want to spend Shabbos there sometime in the next few weeks provided that we have a Minyan. We'd bring tons of kosher food and can have great meals etc. Please let me know if you'd be interested. I'm obviously not interested in a discussion about why you would or would not be interested :P I'm ready to confirm tonight for me and a friend or two. I'd probably book for 2 or 3 nights from Thursday to Saturday or Sunday.

it depends. Some older Sheratons in Cat 3-4 are old, smelly, and not updated. Some new Four Points are cheaper and in Cat 2-3, but their showers, carpeting, and amenities are newer..

The single guys just paid their share. (I brought my share in liquor ;)
I know at least 5 of the interested members here and they're all single.

So we can realistically just do shabbos takeout food

TAM return flight 3:50pm on Sunday to JFK is $136 in J. Im probably just going to book this. The problem is its so far in advance..
+1
Can't get a refundable J fare?
I know its against the creed here, but you can plan things in advance...
I'm willing to book my room tonight
Refundable fares never make sense.

A bunch of Noobs.

If you wanted some big guys like @Dan and @AJK to show up, you'd want to make it in some premium Hotel in some exotic place with Premium cabin availability, otherwise I'm out.
Thats the adventure thread. This is a plain shabbton thread.

Ftr Dan went to Niagara two summers ago, stayed with Fairmont iirc wasn't a nice room at all. If my memory serves me right AJK was somewhere over the Arabian peninsula at that time.

it was a joke.
Meaning they only plan DO's when you're not around because they dont want you there
Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process.
