Post by: davidmal on October 16, 2016, 03:13:43 AM
Being 3am and I'm not even close to finished I figured might be nice to see what everyone else came up with...

Please post your sukkah pictures

A few photos of my sukkah
I built it on a 10 foot high frame
I custom made and keep up all year round
Its made of pvc plastic with aluminum beams
Its 14x28'
Really its two 14' squares

First year I built it
Learnt a lot
Mostly what not to do....
And a lot of help from Hashem

My 3 walls are my house and two fences

The panels are just for weather
Next year I have an idea on how to make them tighter with cable ties and tension straps
They are made out of heavy weatherproof tent material

Had 35 people last night
And set up a double wide table for the adults

For the kids single 6' tables

And we still fit a 14' couch across the wall

I just notice my night pics are with fluorescents off
I used led 4' shop lights from amazon when they went on sale for $38

And surprisingly 2 lit everything up beautifully!!

But so sad no decorations up....
So many people decorate their sukkah so nice

I didn't have a minute between Ddf and scach 😉

There might be a spiritual reason as well but one of the reasons are that if it's significant to you then it may not be בטול to the סכך.

The deal with chabad and sukkah  decorations: there are many reasons given for it here is one:
'שיחות קודש' תש"ל ח"א עמ' 129-133. וראה 'אוצר מנהגי חב"ד', תשרי, עמ' רסז.

IINM same reason they don't wear an atara on the talis. Something to do with the mitzvah itself is beautiful and doesn't need external adornment.

There has to be a better explanation than that.

Any more sukkah pictures

I have to figure out next year a good idea for a awning on top

Problem is my house is 20 and the awning would have to extend 8 more feet off my house to 28

I guess that's why YOU need decorations. The real thing is never good enough, always need something "better".  ;D

In Lubavitch we have the quote of the Alter Rebbe "...איך וויל מער ניט אז דיך אליין".  (See http://m.he.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/528940/jewish/-.htm)

P.S. Is this thread doomed like the one I started with Sukkah pictures to be merged into the Pros and cons of minhagei Chabad (which wasn't even started to discuss actual minhagim but as a good humorous thread)?

I forgot to mention, was due to laziness and putting the sukka up the last minute.

Once we're on the topic of Chabad headgear, can someone explain the triangle top of the crown, as opposed to the more conventional version? Is there a real reason, or is it just something that evolved?

A older chabadsker once claimed to me that the rebba was shorter than the lowest level on the bleachers and when the rebba walked by his feet were sticking out and he personally stepped on and crushed the rebba s hat and thus was born the triangle... who knows...

An aside point of lubavitch headgear why they switched from striemlach to fedoras is a fascinating story explained in The Rebba

Huh? The halacha is pretty clear based on shas and poskim that noi succah is Botel to the secach if it is within 4 tefachim.

Regardless, this is not an explanation as to why not decorate the walls.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people find laminated posters of imaginary artistic renderings of rishonim beautiful; some people find their kids' tissue paper and tinfoil craft projects beautiful; some people find threads of cranberry and popcorn beautiful; some people prefer the sleek, austere look of four full, solid, clear walls.

About your first point I won't respond without looking it up, that's what my Rabbi said.

Regardless, this is not an explanation as to why not decorate the walls.

As far as your second point, I don't think their is any mention in halacha about decorating the walls, it's about decorating the Schach.

K got it slightly wrong. Was the Ari

I've gotten a few questions about the construction of the succah I posted earlier so here are some pictures of various aspects of its construction.

Total size is 24x14

There is a frame built into the deck which stays up all year as well as a support for the schach. The light fixtures are outdoor fixtures which also stay up all year.

This part stays up against the house all year as well.

Here you can see the way the light is set up with a two gang switch in an outdoor box with a plug attached to the existing outdoor outlet allowing us to attach a timer.

Panels on the top and bottom are held in place by turn buckles

The bottom panels have 2 on each side while the top ones have one since the top slides into a slot.

The bottom of the door stays up all year while the top get screwed on each year

I see that the hinge got bent this year-probably by my two year old who figured out how to open the top without the bottom

The bottom door panel is held on by attaching two pieces of 2x4 with turn buckles on the outside

A general picture from the outside

I see that the hinge got bent this year-probably by my two year old who figured out how to open the top without the bottom

The bottom door panel is held on by attaching two pieces of 2x4 with turn buckles on the outside

A general picture from the outside

I'm thinking of buying a Outdoor Heater..... for this year. not sure hanging ones or floor standing....

electric vs. gas
I am happy that I got a fourth fan this year.
Hope it won't be too hot in Florida
It's often brutal

70+ mph winds will do that to a sukka. The actual metal poles bent and collapsed. Will try some wood reinforcements today and a different location.

With the current weather, we need the flip of this

or floor free standing
(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41VJj-KItbL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg)

or classic

I was hoping to find some good fans in Costco yesterday, but I guess they are out for the season.

I wish Costco had a closeout site or sale section

they merely lower prices without mentioning its on sale. you can tell based on cents how many times it was marked down.
I think .97 .87
or something like that

Totally forgot about this.

The Tarp ended up flying away a few hours before yom tov, was pouring rain, crazy story, bottom line ended up getting a different sukka built within the 18 minutes.

Good news is AMEX refunded that sukka :)

Any suggestions on how to incorporate the entire patio in a sukkah?Right now the plan is to buy fiberglass panels to square it up and joist brackets to support beams between the walls of the house.

thats a classic dofen akumah if I ever saw one. (Left side) itís obviously no problem just donít sit under there.

Not gonna try and incorporate the little walkway from the door to the square area too? That would be cool :)

ETA: just noticed the door on the right. Is that the main door youíll be using or youíre putting a sukkah door on the left leading to the sliding door?

Thanks . We were planning to move the table over or just have the women sit on that side. Not gonna incorporate walkway. The sliding door on the left is into the kitchen so we would ideally put a sukkah door there to make it easier

I'm trying to figure out the best way to expand for next year. The current canvas is for privacy and shade, not needed for dofen purposes. Hopefully the pictures show it, but the house indents at the end of the sukkah

It may be the angle, but it looks like the schach on the side perpendicular to the house is not above what looks like it is the real wall. That can in some cases be an issue.

I don't see why you wouldn't just continue what you have further to the left?

Schach fully extended to all walls.
The problem with extending is that I lose the house wall. Still kosher, but unless I put posts all over my back yard there's no easy way to make more pergola.
