Title: B&H to charge sales tax in NJ
Post by: aygart on January 19, 2017, 11:02:52 AM
[size=0pt]Dear customer,

B&H is expanding its distribution network to better serve our customers and will soon operate a fulfillment center in the state of New Jersey.

Our new facility will allow us to process and ship your orders faster; it also means that we will begin collecting sales tax on orders shipped to New Jersey addresses, starting on February 1

We've been looking for a suitable place for the last three years, with no luck.

That was one of many options we considered.

The new warehouse will be in Florence Township.

B&H Photo Video to Open New Fulfillment Center in Central New Jersey to Meet Growing Demand

New York, NY - January 12, 2017 - B&H Photo Video today announced it will move its fulfillment center operations currently located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to a new, larger facility in Florence Township, NJ by the end of the year. This move comes following an exhaustive, unsuccessful search to relocate to a larger facility within New York City. The Navy Yard warehouse lease expires in 2018 with no renewal agreement, necessitating the move.

"We outgrew the existing facility some time ago, and the only reason it still works is due to the outstanding efforts of our employees," VP of Operations Jacob Mittelman said. "We value them and hope they will come with us to this new facility."

B&H partnered with Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL) for several years in an effort to find suitable, available space as part of its search. "The booming commercial real estate market has made finding a suitable space virtually impossible," Rob Kossar of JLL said. "Our search began in New York and continued to northern New Jersey then central New Jersey before finding a suitable facility in Florence Township."

B&H also worked with officials from the NYS ESDC for several years in an effort to find suitable, available space as part of its search.

All warehouse employees impacted by the decision have been offered the opportunity to relocate to the new facility. The move will take place in stages over the second half of the year. The B&H Superstore, store warehouse, and corporate offices will remain in NYC with over 1,500 employees working in those locations.
The new fulfillment center is a 500,000+ square foot facility, with state of the art technology allowing B&H to better serve customers in a quicker and more efficient manner.

"The Navy Yard has been good to us and we wish we could have moved to a bigger and better facility right around the corner, but such a facility just doesn't exist," Mittelman said. "We are confident this move is the right one to ensure the continued growth of our business."

(A quick note on my photographic "record" and where I'm coming from:: I was a salesperson and later trainer in one of the biggest photo stores in the US, and trained salespeople in all topics I hope to cover. I currently work as a product developer for a large manufacturer, where I design and develop photo and lighting equipment and accessories. You could see a small selection of my photography on my Flickr page - click the little globe under my user name to get there.)

No one is being laid off. All warehouse employees will have the option of keeping their current jobs in the new warehouse, or possibly switching over to the Manhattan location.

Hmmm, guys from Brooklyn commuting 90 minutes each way to NJ for a warehouse job?

Should we now merge this thread with "Take Back Lakewood"? V'da"l.

What's the hard part? I doubt having to having to charge sales tax in NJ. The press release seems so apologetic.  Why would they want to stay in NYC its so expensive?

Relocating a large warehouse impacts a great many people, for better or for worse. As many have pointed out, the commute to NJ is not a simple matter, and neither of course is relocating to live closer. The main reason that our search took three years is because we wanted a location that worked for both the company's needs - and more importantly - the employees' best interests. There will likely be many people who choose not to follow the warehouse to NJ; deciding to go ahead with this location was an incredibly difficult decision to make for this very reason.

The press release is not apologetic; it explains, quite frankly, the reasoning behind this move.

We looked in NY for several years and were unable to find a suitable location. Crain's New York Business reported on our efforts as long ago as Oct 2013.

Benefits New Jersey customers can anticipate, as soon as our new facility is up and running, we will be able to extend order cutoff times for free next day delivery from 3:30PM/4:00PM to approximately 7:00PM. In addition, we will have a new customer pickup option for New Jersey customers who need their orders right away. Finally we are actively exploring options for same day delivery to large parts of New Jersey.

just to point out. Focus camera moved to a warehouse an hour or so from Lakewood. They had (have) and extremely hard time getting people from Lakewood to work there. When they gave up on that for the most part, they had a hard time hiring locals. Just saying hope they are not relying on lakewood to fill the jobs.

No need to leave Lakewood for a warehouse job, why would they travel an hour?
