Yup, saw that.  Supposed to be an excellent hotel.
The location is on the Cleveland Clinic campus, halfway between downtown and the jewish community.

I don't understand how this works (even after reading Dans post).  I checked dates on the website and it says the hotel is available at 5,000 points a night.

What is the deal with cash and points AND the 5,000 points in your account?!  Im confused. Sorry
Title: Re: New Pointbreaks!
Post by: ashers on July 19, 2011, 05:15:01 AM
It usually goes for 25,000 points now on pointbreaks it is 5,000 points
Dan was basically explaining how to get around buying extra points for full price and getting them cheaper

How do you get around buying the points for full price? What does that have to do with having 5,000 points in your account? Can you use those for booking lets say 2 nights once you buy 5,000 more?

So, 5,000 points a night is cheap?
Title: Re: New Pointbreaks!
Post by: ashers on July 19, 2011, 05:30:18 AM
The point breaks and buying points are 2 separate things:
1. Buying points- The idea is to book a hotel worth 15,000 points a night (usually a holiday inn) using the cash + points option= 5,000 points + $60  and then cancel it.
They will refund you 15,000 points (IE: not the $60 but you just got 10,000 points for $60!)
2. PointBreaks- Priority Club releases every now and then hotels for 5,000 points a night (instead of the usual 15,000 - 25,000 a night)
so when you book one of those you basically pay $30 according to the above calculation.

It's pretty well explained in Dans post.
You book a points (5,000 points, which is why you need 5,000 to begin) and cash ($60) hotel stay, nothing to do with pointsbreak, cancel and you get 15,000 points back, your original 5,000 plus 10,000 for your $60.

Is $30 cheap?

Try opening account with different email/mailing address.
The got me on 2 different mailing addresses, since the 2 emails were nearly identical.
I was even told by their fraud dept, that should i try a new account, it may last for a little while, but eventually they will catch it and shut it down.

I wish somebody here can provide me with a contact at priority club, that has the power to over rule the fraud dept.
I think it's silly to ban someone for life for such a minor thing.

If you put a mailing address of a differet country and a completely different email I doubt they'll catch on.

If you're really worried change one letter of your name, add a middle initial.

Anyone try calling to see if they might open up more award availability manually?

Priority club says only the hotel can open up more rooms for awards, the hotel reservations manager says priority club reservations is through priority club and they (the hotel) can't/won't make more rooms available.

Indeed, my friend.

Although there is some good news, i have spoken to a higher level exec at priority club today about the abuse of the system. they did inform that first of all the hotel only opened up (so far) rooms with king size beds for reward nights. but they did acknowlege that there is abuse by travel agents who book it all up right away, people booking to resell etc; and they're looking into it.

I don't have a problem if someone wants to stay there 20 nights, or if they are booking for specific people that have asked them to book for them. The part that is disgusting is someone booking 5 rooms every night, figuring they'll either sell, or cancel.
These idiots ruin it for everyone. What happens if PC decides to discontinue PB altogether?

The worst are the people who call priority club execs to complain that they didn't get a night! These type of are usually the ones who ruin things... Maybe call all airlines to tell them about the abuse of their points, how about credit card companies I'm sure they'd like to know about your churning!!

I found nothing wrong with calling PC and the hotel to try to get them to open more rooms and saying it seems kind of strange that all the rooms disappeared almost instantaneously. I think they'd be more open to helping me out (at least PC would be) if they realize that someone may be ruining it for everyone else. (I'm talking phone representative level, not executive level, which admittedly would be an escalation possibly not in everyone's best interest, a$$h@!# be damned.)

The worst are the people who call priority club execs to complain that they didn't get a night!

I am not complaining that I didn't get a night, rather that there are those out there who for their own personal $$ gain will book up all the availabilty unfairly. if it was booked legally than you have nothing to fear. if it was booked unfairly and disgustingly at the expense of "the rest of us"  than yes it should be dealt with.

These type of are usually the ones who ruin things...

Ruin what?!?!?! oh you mean for "EVERYBODY" i.e the few deceitful "travel agents". Actually it's good for the rest of the 99% of us who the PB is really intended for.

Maybe call all airlines to tell them about the abuse of their points,

What abuse of their points? do unscrupluos deceitful people book up all award availability available so that they can resell it for money to those that it was originally intended  for?!?!?!.

how about credit card companies I'm sure they'd like to know about your churning!!

First off, i have never churned any credit cards (so far).

Second, contrary to your incorrect assertion, it's a wrong allegory. 1. Credit card company's know that people churn and they are for the most part fine with it except for chase.  2. the ones that churn are not taking away from anyone else.
A correct allegory would be something like if amex only offered 50 credit cards with bonus points and one despicable indivisual takes them all to resell to those who it was originaly intended.
Or for example if macy's makes a sale of 50 suits 80% off to frequent shoppers and some ShAM from get's in through the back door first and buys them all out to sell for a large profit to those waiting by the front entrance.

It was originally on the Pointbreaks list, then it got taken off, but when going to the hotels page it still showed as bookable for 5K. No, though we have one for SPG and for Amex MR.
When I did the transfer yesterday, the confirmation said the points will transfer on Aug 2nd (same day).
On the UR page where you request the transfer it says:
"Most point transfer orders will process by the next business day, but in some instances it may take up to a week."

:(  Oh well, I'll use it one day down the road when a new pointbreaks comes out.

They claim that it was never on the Pointbreaks list. (Not true!). I had paid $70 to get another 10K points (via reserving C&P and canceling) so I got them to refund the $70 and take back the 10K - didn't 'earn' anything but at least I don't have $70 locked in in case I never end up using them again.

PC hotels don't generally care about your status.
I just got a bag of popcorn, bottle of Perrier, and a chocolate bar (don't remember which) at CP Engelwood for being Gold

Awesome!  I sent them a SM complaining that I transferred 5K to pointbreaks, and ended up not being able to book.

They wrote back

I went with el San Juan for $186 after all charges (discounted from $235) and I have HH gold so well see what I get

I have never done this before but I get the idea an it sounds great.  Question is, can I book 100 rooms at different locations and still have them cancel all of them awarding me with a massive amount of points?

Is there a maximum amount of rooms you can book?

Do they need to refund you?

Will their fraud department get involved or is it easily explained by saying the program I was looking to run got cancelled?

Not in the least.
But it's always good when they put IC's on the list, since it hopefully means that the list will continue to have some quality in it. (I'm dreaming of the David IC)

If they only have Holiday Inn's, it loses much of its value.

You can transfer from Amex, you can open the Priority Plub CC from Chase, or you can transfer from UR. If you already have 5000 points in your account you can get an additional 10,000 for $70, through a small process.

Check Pririty Club's website.

I don't see the point of visiting Costa Rica and spending time in San Jose unless there is a reason to be there. It is just a crowded city with not much to do or see. There are so many beautiful places and tons of activities in many parts of Costa Rica so don't waste your time in San Jose.

It says it only includes 10 of the 143 US properties that will be on the list.
Quote
In the interest of space, I am only listing ten of the 143 U.S. properties  on the list. On November 1st, when hotels are avialable for booking, you'll find the full U.S. list  here.
You'll have to wait till tomorrow to know for sure.

New list on the way.
For the Israeli's here, the IC Mumbai is on the list, and it's dirt cheap to fly there w/ LY using AA miles.
DO anyone? (EDIT: regular rates are quite cheap, so it's not quite the deal.)

It's their SOP.
No different than every time the SW 50k bonus comes back, is close to being pulled, is vveerrrryyy close to being pulled, and is THEN EXTENDED to a later day.
Rinse and repeat.

To their credit, they usually don't get any payouts from these filler posts cuz they rarely push the 60k IHG card b/c they're too embarrased due to the non-affiliate existence of the 80k card.

How do you reserve point breaks.  Does the 5000 point listing come up on their regular site or do you need log in through a special site.  As a platinum member is it possible to upgrade the room.  If so can you do it with points?  How many.

Willing to pay for the convenience. Value lost would be $15 a day, I'm fine with that in this situation.

When the new PointBreaks was released, I found 2 weeks at the Crown Plaza at the end of November for 5k a night. Having zero IHG points, I tried BOTH transferring from Chase UR and buying from points.com in order to begin the points acquisition trick. Neither method showed up instantly. I called with the intention of having them advance me points or something like that, and was told that it 1) couldn't be done (contrary to others' experience), and 2) wasn't necessary because I could book it at the discounted cash rate and then later change the reservation to points. I voiced my concern that by that time that room rate would undoubtedly be gone and was assured that no matter, since I had it locked down when it was that rate I could later change it, regardless of inventory. I double and triple checked that point.

Well, silly me. When the points cleared, the availability was of course gone. I called and was told as much, repeatedly, my protestations notwithstanding. Even told them I had made a nonrefundable ticket based on the knowledge that this was to be available, and now had no place I could afford to stay. After going around in circles for some time, I was finally referred to a senior case manager. Who was much more understanding. But still unable to do much beyond try to get in touch with the hotel explain the situation to them, and have them release inventory at that rate of their own accord. Obviously not happening in Israel. In fact, they won't even communicate with her.

So at this point she's offering me a)20k IHG points or b)if I book a stay of at least three nights, they'd comp one. I'm leaning toward the points, not least because of the highly unfavorable reviews I've found of the place.

I'm also hoping to dispute the charges related to amassing the miles with amex (about $450 worth), we'll see how that goes.

Anyhow, there's my cautionary tale, don't be dumb like me. And maybe record your phone calls.

Any other ideas of how I might be compensated for their agent's misspeaking?

If you make any modifications to a PointsBreak reservation, it will price out the remaining nights at the current rate.
PointsBreak reservations are essentially non-changeable.

What are you basing your statement on?
I've gotten upgraded plenty of times as a platinum member.
That's besides for the fact that you often get a free drink at the bar or some other amenity.

Officially it's 190, but I can get vouchers for less.
They gave me the room w/o asking, and mentioned b/c of Plat status.
It's not on the Club floor, so maybe he was just saying it. If you want access to the club lounge, he offered me a 'discount' of $30 pp for access. It's open for 3-4 hours in the morning and  and again in the evening, and they have breakfast/dinner spreads (unsure of the extent), drinks, etc.

At that price, it wasn't worth it for me.

Also, FYI, they charge for gym entrance which is annoying.

Best way would be cab to cab! But bus to cab would be more cost efficient. If your considering going, keep in mind that you can not get a visa at the allenby bridge, you will need to go to the Jordanian consulate before hand to obtain one, only the border by Eilat gives visas at the border. (this is for USA citizens, i don't have experience with Israeli citizens).

Didn't need to. He seems already knows about all of the USA considering his previous post.
Maybe if he'd get to the States more often he'd realize how much a night in Page is during June. Or That Boeing Field is located in Everett. Perhaps he'd realize that SAT has a lot of business going on. He'd possibly realize that Nashua is a year round vacation destination.

Ummm... Is someone a bit cranky? I don't know who you are, but you presume to know a lot about me.

This is subjective. For my needs it offers zero value, and therefore to me it's all useless. If you think Nashua is a year round vacation spot that's hilarious (cuz to me it's a ghost town with no concept of what a Jew is). I had to commute to Nashua for work frequently, and I'd never go there for a vacation.

Also, spent plenty of time in the US, born and raised.

I have Gold status and they upgraded me to a one BR. That's even though I booked a Proceline express deal for about half of what IHG.com was selling the night for. And officially you don't get points (didnt) or status benefits when using 3rd party booking sites.

I called ahead and they wouldn't even let me add Marriott # to the ressy (this is common with 3rd party bookings but I always do it anyway at checkin and once in a while actually get points).

So the upgrade came at checkin time.

Yes. My bad. Same issue with Marriott. And I'm IHG Platinum. But that really didn't seem to do much at a bunch of IHG properties I stayed in. I even got the "no better rooms available" BS a bunch of times when there clearly were better rooms available.

Got a Friday night at HI Ashkelon for my family and the inlaws.  We live in Ashkelon, so it's always a nice way to catch a break without going through too much trouble.

The hotel is family-friendly and right on the boardwalk and beach (the boardwalk was refurbished not that long ago).  They are slowly renovating the place and recently replaced all the lobby furniture.

Just an FYI: the HI Ashkelon also has an executive lounge/club room and tends to be generous in granting free access to Platinums, even on points.  Definitely a nice perk and very unusual for Israel.

For anyone interested, Ashkelon is mostly about the beaches and the marina.  There's also an archaeological park with some interesting ruins.  Honestly, there's a lot more internal/Israeli tourism than foreign tourism.

It could also serve as a nice base for exploring the Northern Negev between Ashkelon and Beer Sheva.

It could also serve as a nice base for exploring the Northern Negev between Ashkelon and Beer Sheva.
Do "chareidi" go there? (because of the kashrus)

I have Gold status and they upgraded me to a one BR. That's even though I booked a Proceline express deal for about half of what IHG.com was selling the night for. And officially you don't get points (didnt) or status benefits when using 3rd party booking sites.

Yes. My bad. Same issue with Marriott. And I'm IHG Platinum. But that really didn't seem to do much at a bunch of IHG properties I stayed in. I even got the "no better rooms available" BS a bunch of times when there clearly were better rooms available.
Gold or Platinum?

To be honest, I don't recall seeing any.  There were plenty of dati leumi/orthodox, and of course non-religious/masorti.  I'm pretty sure the kashrus is rabbinate, but I may be wrong.

I do know that I've never had an issue with checking out motzei Shabbos.

Haredi or not, I think 5,000 points is a great deal even for board only without meals.  You can still enjoy the accommodations and explore...

Cool to know that you live there, have been looking for someone that lives there. I have been there maybe 20 times in the past 3 years and never once was I offered free loungee access. I am platinum.

Man, booked the 2nd weekend in October at HI Burlington. Was gonna do a fall foliage trip, basing out of there. At the time the Mont Tremblant one was available. Now wifey wants to do it a bit more up north, across the border in Montreal, and of course the Mont Tremblant one is long gone. Anyone know if someone cancel it, can I then book it at 5k? That assumes I can find someone who is willing to switch, which is a remote possibility.

I hope you haven't called yet.  CAREFUL! They can revoke the 5k per night and make you pay the current point rate for each night.  EVEN IF the CSR tells you the points will remain the same! BTDT.

Maybe we can exchange. I have this week available in Mahwah, NY and would like to exchange part or all with someone (or sell if I have to).  Different dates for the same location would be great.

That should be perfectly fine. The problem is when they modify a reservation where the hotel has sold out of pointbreak reservations. The modification can cause the points to change to the higher current amount. It shouldn't be and is a hassle and a lot of HUCA to change.

I think it's doable, probably not wonderful but doable.  They have "family suites" that have an extra room with bunk beds for kids.  I'm sure they'd let you add money if one is available.  Probably another $100-$150 depending.

They will inform you that the rooms have mechanical keys for shabbat and then charge the fee to switch the room over from electronic to mechanical (which consists of a guy sticking a plastic blocker over the door latch and then handing you the key to the deadbolt). They don't allow you to say you will live without the deadbolt lock, claiming its unsafe to not have a way to lock the room if you leave.

Most ironically, I found it was extremely hard to get a shabbat goy - I was expecting it to be super easy. I needed a light switched on and every single one had an excuse why they couldn't do it l. Maybe their staff is trained not to or is sick of doing it.

Again, this is just IME but I've been a few times.

Very helpful. Thank you.  I have made a dummy reservation under a different name for next weekend and then forwarded the confirmation with the following email message (sent from an email account with a name that's not my own) with the following query:
---
"Dear Crowne Plaza Stamford Staff,

I am looking forward to spending next weekend at your property.  As an observant Jew, I do not use electricity on the Sabbath, from sundown Friday through nightfall Saturday.  As such, I would like to ask if a staff member from the hotel would be able to escort me to my room when I return from Synagogue on Friday night and on Saturday afternoon, and open the door for me.  Will there be any additional charge for this assistance?

Thank you for your consideration."
---

I will let you all know what they say.  If they indicate that there is a fee as you note below, then I'll need to decide whether just to go frum-incognito (I don't look so frum anyway) or to cancel altogether.  I can't see paying a $75 fee when the nightly room rate is ~$35!  Thanks again.

Any update?

I'm quite happy to take it over. Please PM. TIA.

I never received a response from the CP Stamford. I waited one week and then cancelled that sham reservation. Pretty lame not to reply to the email, but whatever.

I'll still plan to keep my real reservation in April. I don't plan to notify them in advance of my need for a staff member to escort me to my room -- I'll just do that on Friday night or Saturday morning on my way out to shul.  I'll let  you all know how it goes....

For this weekend (Feb 25th), March 4th, 11th, or 18th weekends. Also April 1st and maybe 8th. Reservations starting on Thursdays are even better. Last time around I made a few reservations which I ended up cancelling. I am hoping someone else will be doing the same this time.

Oh the promo that I was talking about was using the points + cash method which is available for anyone that has a ihg cc. I believe the offer to straight up buy points at a discounted rate is targeted (my account did not receive a good rate).

Ask someone who has points to make sham bookings for you and tell you how many available. Either a friend might do it for free or a DDF stranger might do it for a small fee or some kind of trade or compensation....

The only place I could find is here: https://www.ihg.com/rewardsclub/content/us/en/redeem-rewards/pointbreaks?cm_mmc=OFMAM-6C-US-EN-IHGBLOG-PREVIEW

Where can we find out a preview in advance? And where is the best place to view the initial posting?

Apparently, they don't like me either, probable because of the whole BRG fiasco.

But on a serious note, I realized it was just a bad link. The usual PointBreaks link https://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/global/redeem-rewards/pointbreaks does not have the list yet, maybe because it isn't live?

But anyhow, you should be able to see it here: https://www.ihg.com/rewardsclub/content/us/en/redeem-rewards/pointbreaks?cm_mmc=OFMAM-6C-US-EN-IHGBLOG-PREVIEW

So only a few rooms are available at 5k and then once that runs out they can then offer the remainder at the usual awards price?

That means that they've met their quota of how many 5k rooms they will allow per day (or they have taken themselves off PB even though it still shows on the list)

Just trying to make sure nothing is going to happen as they have very specific terms that you cannot sell or commercial.....Or you can forfeit you account... Just wondering if that is something to be nervous about... I'm actually just doing someone a favor and he's paying me cost price for points just don't want the favor to come back and haunt me...

Personally I think the change is a positive. For the past few years the 5K list was mostly a bunch of Holiday Inn's and Staybridge / CS off the highway, in middle of nowhere. This will allow them to offer a deal at higher-end properties, which they would not have offered for 5K.

Although there was always one or two deals. You can be assured there won't be any now. It will be more of a discount now than a deal.

Same here, booked a holiday inn for 10k, last year was 5k, and the cash rate is $98, not really worth it.

+1. 10k isn't that much of a bargain for a localish hotel.  At that rate there are comparable hotels in other chains which are much closer.

What do you expect to get out of ihg? Over 1 cpp ($98+taxes) is a very decent redemption imo.

I thought you were referring to the fact that Pointbreaks have always been 5K until now.  Yes, the hotel list always changes.

Sure they always changed the hotel locations, but all hotels on the list were 5000 points. They slowly almost removed all IC and then started offering out of the way locations, and now went from 5k to 15k for the near decent ones, I see this as a big change .

Yes I know, wasn't discussing that. Op was complaining that a hotel that he stayed in last year @ 5k is 10k this yr.

And people seem to be agreeing that doubling the redemption rate for a pretty lackluster hotel is a big change. Pretty much halves the cpp since most of these hotels only go for about $100/night anyway.

Why are you looking at it as doubling the redemption rate? Last year they halved it.
And what am I supposed to be learning? That ihg made a change? I know they did. And the change isn't, that the hotel that you went to last year is now double the points.

Until this year, Pointbreaks was 5k/night no matter which property. This year, the Pointbreaks rate for the identical property I booked at 5k/night last year became 10k/night. It would be one thing if they made better hotels available at 10k/night or 15k/night. But they didn't. Not sure what's complicated here.

It's possible it's dead, but it's been late in the past, and I wouldn't say it's dead because a blogger is looking for clickbait.

I am afraid it is true, they basically devalued gradually over the last two years. Also not only is the list late there usually is a preview a few days before. B"H I have very few points left, I will be exiting the IHG eco system and be sticking with Hyatt and marriott.

The article contains a quote from IHG indicating PB days are over.

Not every article is for click bait. I actually find LL to be pretty ok about not pushing articles for the sake of pushing. Some days he will only have three or less articles, that's less then DD. His style articles are always the same.

Also the CC has a 140k offer @5k =28 nights.  I dont see these two as an indicator there will be a new PB.

I hope to be wrong.
