Let me just understand this... Do people fly JFK-HKG-TLV as a thing? Why would you fly such a roundabout way unless you're Ferdinand Magellan? Please enlighten me.

For the free stopover in HKG. And the better airline.

That's if you want to go to HKG. But if you have no interest in HKG then I think it would be insane to take this route just for a better airline. No?

For you it would be insane, for others for the value of a point its one of the best options out there.

I have to go NYC - HKG a lot for work and almost always around the major jewish holidays. Hopefully you're right and most people wouldn't go around the world and leave some availability for me to route through Israel once in a while.

It's an interesting way to go to TLV, and people enjoy the fact that there's a $20k MSRP on the ticket they spent 70k AS on.

Service....
Elal vs Cathay
I think FedEx has a better shot beating Cathay over elal

That's like people who enjoy paying $600 for a $3,000 MSRP pair of Louis Vuitton shoes. Granted CX F is an awesome product and Louis Vuitton is overpriced cr@p, but Freddie has a point. It's a wannabe move to fly double the distance just to get "better value" out of your 70k AS.

why not arrive like a person
Flying J on UA 84 will also get you there feeling like a person, especially if this is true
According to TPG's snapchat, UA is going to be flying the new 777 with the new Polaris seats, EWR-TLV starting in May.

haha don't take it to personal

I mean when I get on that plane F or even J I relax
And I enjoy my flight
My seat
The service
A nap
I get my emails down to 0
Learning time
Eating time
Quiet time
Movie time
Me time

When was the last time you can be alone for 16 hours and just refuel mentally.

UA or LX J does the same job of arriving like a mentch.

i agree but I find 10-11 hours not enough when you take away 8 for sleeping
I barely finish a movie 2 meals and pray
I feel rushed and fomo

Why specifically 84?
No reason really, just picked one, timing wise, I'd rather get there in the morning but some people like different things.

Meaning you don't like flying direct because the flight is too short. That's certainly an interesting perspective.

Not all of us live in the US. And for those of us who live in Israel this is a fantastic way to get to Asia..  which I do pretty much every chance I get. At only 40k AA OW in J, this is a steal! From HKG I can easily connect to most places in asia on many OW carriers.
