Excited to see it's camera in particular.

I'll probably be replacing my Note 4 Edge with this or the V30.

With all the software updates of the S8, is there really an advantage of the pen for a regular consumer?

Obviously I don't know what features they will bring on the Note 8 but in the past I always found the pen enjoyable to use but never something I personally felt like I needed.  Though I am sure there are people out there who use their s-pen all the time.

It's also rumored to be bigger than the s8 plus.  Another selling point for some.

I'm most excited to see it's camera. I would imagine the s9 will have a similar camera to whatever the note 8 is rocking.

What did you use it for? The best thing I head was screen shots, but that's so easy on the S8.

@Dan  Wondering why you waited for the Note 8 as opposed to going with the s8 plus...

or were you just really waiting on hearing if the LG had a removable battery?

Was waiting on LG.
But 6GB RAM, dual cameras, and the stylus sound nice now.

And I guess with a trade in price its kind of comparable to what you could get an s8+ for now...

I do NOT understand the appeal of a stylus.

When I had a note I really just ended up using it for creative reasons. Writing, drawing etc.  I enjoyed it. But it was by no means necessary.

Some people just prefer it to using their finger.

Exactly. Typing is faster than writing, and how often does someone really draw on their phone... unless you are in a specialized field that needs it, I can't even think of what I'd use it for more than once in a while maybe.

I guess there could be some good games with it

I guess if you have a Note 4 you won't find it to be so bad, it might even feel better.

The camera is great, and dual camera is a great Improvement. Very useful

First thoughts:

-Man this thing is fast!
-Camera is amazing
-S-pen translate feature is very cool.
-Still can't believe they sent a 256GB SD!
-It's big but I'm getting used to it. Love all the screen real estate.
-Wireless charger convertible is great
-I hate that you need to have a lock screen enabled in order to get notifications in the always-on display. Dumb!
-I miss the Note 4 edge screen a lot.
-I can't find any call recording apps that work.
-I wish Samsung did the double tap to turn the screen off like LG does.

Just received my two note 8 phones and realized that I ordered one unlocked version instead of Verizon branded.

Is there any reason to send it back and exchange for the Verizon branded phone or is the unlocked the same phone just without the Sim card???

When you activate it with Verizon do you automatically get added bloatware ?

The other thing to consider is software updates.  I believe sometimes the carrier version get them before the unlocked.  Otherwise I'd say having an unlocked version is the way to go.

Don't know why, but I can tell you that my unlocked G4 cannot have travel pass while the Verizon one does. They told me that this sometimes happens with unlocked phones. I needed to reactivate an old device.

My wife has an unlocked S8 with TP on her line.
Never heard of TP being phone dependent. It is plan dependent though, it didn't work on my old unlimited plan.

Glass backs are ridiculous. I realize they help with wireless charging but they rarely give a good trip and then there's the obvious issues with breaking.   Other ways to make a phone look nice IMO.

Hey Guys,

Just got my note 8 and its great, There is so far one thing that is getting me extremly frustrated.

Notifications

I used to have whatsapp and twitter have pop downs with new notifications. Now I just get a vibrate for twitter if im lucky, and my whatsapp is all over the place.

my goal would like to have just pop up, new message or 3 messages 4 chats... etc. I do not want any content to be displayed on my screen other than when i swipe down. (ive seen it on the S8 but not able to combine on the note 8 )

Any thoughts?

Lastly, does anyone even use bixby? Or does this edge work for anyone when the phone is off? I find the always on display to be nice bec of the clock but its a pain to check any incoming mail/tweets and so on, I like to quickly swipe down in lock screen to determine if i should open the phone for any of the various vibrates.

@Dan I am a sworn Zagg guy, but it didnt come out, so I bought something on amazon that I have used in the past. I personally hate cases and once the screen ocver comes I will ditch the 93 cent case i got.

Yes. Been messing with them all day.

You actually have a lock screen with a pin, (on lock screen show content - That is not there if there is not pin.

There are two options, but both dont help me. In edge settings, I can turn off the notifications for whatsapp and that would eliminate the mini pop up with the name and part of the message. in turn it would bring a pop down with the last 5 chats/people that are unread. This doesnt help either, Im trying to eliminate all content in any message pop up other than who or if multiple people/chats then just hoe many unread.

issue with that is then all my apps have hidden contents on the lock screen. In addition, it doesn't help once the phone is on. I'm back to either edge with single messages poppingv up. No edge then 5 Sep messages popping up. Or silence which no messages will pop up though an icon will appear on top, but then no vibrate.

In short there is no option to notify/vibrate with 'no peeking'

I got three note 8 with the note 7 special.. sent one back because it was the unlocked version in error.
All three came with 256 cards and the charger
Did you get a tracking number for them? Or it just came?

Btw why wouldn't you want a unlocked one over carrier one isn't it the same phone without the stock apps?

Add the travel pass before activating the phone?
I chatted online and I called Verizon both reps claimed that it won't work. I didn't want to take the chance and just traded it in.
Actually, I'm lucky... Samsung gave me a very hard time with exchange. Only allowed return and then I'd have to wait for it to arrive to reorder.

I took the chance and reordered using the original URL and same email address and my second order went through!! Same discount and was able to use the same credit account for the financing.

Once I had the new order confirmed, I just returned the unlocked phone.

Looks like the URL allows more than one order per email address

However, she also dropped it many times with no issues. This time it was on the granite countertop. Guess it was the angle of the drop.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/52047e6daab49fbfd80f49fec1118426.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/b516feb72dd66b3384d121b89452435f.jpg)

Screen repairs run in excess of $300.

Going to try a $7 screen protector and hope it will prevent the cracks from spreading.

If it indeed spreads, then I'll decide then what my options are.

It's crazy that a $1,000 phone should be so fragile.

Not going to spend two hours only to find out that it is $300 or more.

If you only crack your screen once a year that wouldn't be worth it. After paying the membership and the $99 deductable it's already costing the same as just replacing the screen by Samsung.

Fine for me, but I haven't upgraded due to many reports of battery life plunging after the upgrade.

Now that you mention it. It does seem to drain faster.

Lots of forums and blogs saying the same.
This is why I didn't upgrade my Note Edge and why I probably won't upgrade my Note 8. The downside always seems to be worse than the upside.

It's horrible, I was at 50% just 3 hrs ago (and that was after needing to charge earlier this afternoon). Was on the phone for 35min and next thing I know I have 7%.

Same bug that people had on the Note Edge after upgrading. I fell for it on the Galaxy Nexus, wasn't going to make that mistake again.
Ploy to get people to buy new phone perhaps.

Either way I just got this phone

Miss the good ole battery swapping days.
Guess waterproofing the phone was the trade off

S5 was waterproof and swappable.
Tradeoff was for a functionally awful glass back because the reviewers thought it looks pretty (even though now you need a case to cover it, because its GLASS).
State of the smartphone market is so sad right now.

Contemplating it, but I really like the stylus -love the glimpse feature - though the novelty may wear off.

I mean return it for the Android 7 that the phone was built for and don't upgrade to the buggy 8.

What made you switch?

Wasn't the camera already incredible and the speed already amazing?
I mean it could be the s9 plus is better but curious why you upgraded.

Yup, I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade.
Then again I also didn't upgrade to Oreo.

I've basically made every note/Galaxy switch since the s5, this is turning out to be one of my better switches. The phone overall is significantly faster, the camera is significantly better, and there were a bunch of Bluetooth issues that were fixed. Additionally I am liking the Oreo a lot.

I wouldn't upgrade on the older hardware, never seems to work out.

Yup.  Though actually I upgraded on the S8 and had no issues...  But I still wouldn't recommend it generally, unless you have a pixel.

Battery life?
Title: Re: Galaxy Note 8
Post by: hgeek23 on August 13, 2018, 10:50:58 AM
Battery life?

I have a note 8, Korean edition, so it has a chipset that isnt of the usa, but the battery is same capacity, and the battery life, like most battery lives of droids, expires relatively quickly in my opinion with the screen on.  I am always envious of iphones, they seem to last longer.
I highly suggest a portable fast-charging battery, it does wonders.  Samsung sells a 5100 maH battery that's perfect.

Screen protectors are the absolute pits.  All of them on Amazon have false 5-star reviews, all lessen the touch-ability.
In Japan they make excellent protectors.  If you can get one from there I would.

Lol no I probably didn't.  Your link did not have a screen protector for the note 8 so I just searched it. Whatever it's $2 I'll see what I get.
