Keep in mind you probably won't be protected by EU compensation and doubtfully will be reprotected if there are issues with your flight.

Idk about travel insurance , airline bankruptcy might not be a coveted event but I imagine you'd be covered for the price of the ticket at least, maybe not to rebook you. I'd hope the later

I would guess that the chances of them agreeing to book you now on their own metal for January without charging YQ, is about the same as a plume of hair growing out of the palm of your hand, but I would love to be proven wrong. If AB ceases operations between now and the actual flight, that might be another story, but as things currently stand, I stand by my first statement.

Bookings to New York again possible
For the route to New York, airberlin's booking mask now offers availability in the Classic and Flex tariffs. This will keep the flights safe. In a previous version of this article we had reported that this connection is also deleted. In the meantime, the tariff in Expertflyer was no longer available and can only be booked at tariffflex at airberlin. A typical indicator for deleting a flight. In the official report, however, New York remains outside, which suggests that the flight will also go beyond September.

Buchungen nach New York wieder möglich

Check out any oneworld program or any Etihad group program (Etihad, Alitalia, Jet Airways) and see what works for you. If you paid a very low fare, there might not be much to credit.

Post by: Littlemookie on September 10, 2017, 11:42:56 AM
Let's hope Air Berlin is sold soon, Sept 15 is a date that others have been mentioning as the auction date deadline. I have a ticket booked JFk-TXL-TLV for 10/22, returning 10/29. Since they are technically selling the flex fares online and they haven't officially cancelled the flights, they won't rebook anything when you call. The call center insists that the flight is scheduled as planned and if the flight is cancelled they will rebook on another airline. This is such a money grab on Air Berlin's part. They knew they wouldn't be able to fly these sale routes, but needed the cash. So they accept the bookings, and then string everyone along by not officially cancelling the routes until they are sold off, which makes it difficult to file a claim with insurance or credit card protection.

My guess is that Lufthansa would have to take over the existing bookings if they take over the long haul, but I can't imagine that they would keep the current Air Berlin schedule. Anyone have any luck in getting rebooked before the official announcement? The CSR seemed to indicate that they would rebook you and send an email with the new routing, but we'll see how that actually works out as Oneworld is unlikely to take any bookings if Lufthansa is taking over the long haul routes.

Flights JFK-DUS are still going (as of now)
Flights DUS-TLV are also canceled.
Seems that the only way to be rebooked will be JFK-DUS-TXL-TLV.

You can't rebook since JFK-DUS is also ending on Sept 25th. Best bet is LH taking over the route and the booking transferred to LH. Not sure if that will happen, but it's probably part of the bidding rules.

After holding over an hour, a representative came on, I gave him my booking number, he said it's cancelled and before I got a chance to say anything else we got disconnected.  Tried calling back, phone won't even ring.  Tried calling the number provided on the email and it's busy.

I called a few times, finally got a really nice manager, who seemed to actually know what she was talking about, explained to me that even if she rebooks on another airline, AB will call to cancel it within a few days as they have a robot going through every reservation and cancelling the ones that were rebooked on other carriers.

The route was NYC-TXL-TLV RT, she said she is allowed to rebook on other AB flights, and therefore offered MIA-TXL as well as BOS-TXL, which are officially still operating through Oct 31st. But she mentioned just as a piece of advice based on what shes been seeing at the airline the past few weeks, that I just take a refund and book another flight being that in all probability those will be cancelled as well.

I asked about the possibility of the airline that buys them out accommodating all their passengers, and she sounded extremely wary of that happening, based on her knowledge of whats going on with the negotiations.

Just wondering how much would trip insurance that includes protection from operator insolvency would have cost. It's not like AB's problems were a huge secret.

Anyone buying tickets on AZ should take note.

Fighting with a CC for a refund might not help. Once an entity files in court, all assets and liabilities (an unused ticket is a liability) have to go through the court process.

If it's on JFK-TXL route most likely canceled. check if you received an email today from air berlin. you can also check it on British airways website.

I had no luck re-booking, agents say there is no agreement with partner airlines and they can only process the refund.

They want the $$ for as long as possible. Don't know why so many ppl booked this, it was pretty clear that the airline was having huge issues, and even if you'd get a refund for interruption it can cause significant issues.

Fighting with a CC for a refund might not help. Once an entity files in court, all assets and liabilities (an unused ticket is a liability) have to go through the court process.

why would court proceedings affect a cc dispute?
someone paid for s/t that they arent getting- that should be an easy dispute to win.

does anyone know if it matters whether or not you paid your bill yet, as the law w cc states that you have the right not to pay if dissatisfied w merchandise or service if its over $50 and w/in 100 miles of your home state (if AB has an office in omestate- does that work? how bout if u purchased online?)

Call and ask them to rebook you on another airline.
Tried and HUCA'd and they are only offering alternate airlines for flights booked prior to Aug 15. Flights booked after Aug 15 are only getting refunds. I told them that a week ago they promised they would rebook us, but they said that rule has changed since. If anyone has better success, please report back.

anytime you dispute a CC charge, no one "give you money," they just deduct that amount from your bill
is there any diff, legally, whether or not you paid "that month's" bill in full already?

Again, who's going to pay? In a normal dispute the merchant is charged but do you think that'll happen when the merchant is in bankruptcy. Maybe.

You paid for a ticket (some kind of obligation to try to get you from point a to point b at a certain time). You got exactly what you paid for: a lose promise. Now the airline filed for bankruptcy, which says we are unable to keep all our promises. The court will decide who gets what out of whatever is available.

That's how bankruptcy works. If you purchased AFTER the bankruptcy filing, your purchase is 100% protected by the court, and is not subject to the bankruptcy proceedings.

It will end since they are only selling Flex tickets on their own website. That's usually a good indicator that the flight won't be operating.  You can buy a regular (non-flex) ticket for the 24th, but only flex tickets beyond that date. They won't fly empty planes for the few bookings they have. My guess is that once the results of the auction are announced, they will officially cancel any remaining long-haul and not rebook anyone.

many of us bought non-flex tix after the 15th, so officially they will offer a refund if cancelled. whats the science in switching sales to "flex-only" now?  either way, tickets sold today have the same rules as those sold anytime after the 15th?

It's the fact that they don't have to offer the refund yet, since they didn't officially cancel the flight. You have a hard time claiming insurance or a refund when the flight isn't officially cancelled. The Flex route has been a indicator that Air Berlin will be cancelling the route, you can run a few checks and find that has been the case with how the blogs and media surmised that Sept 25th was the date many routes were ending, even before the official announcement. When people called (myself included) the rep insisted the flight was still operating in October, and even if it was cancelled, they would be rebooked on another airline. Obviously that turned out to be a false statement, but the flex fare only has been correct every time.

It doesn't seem like LH is taking over their long haul routes, so I wouldn't bank on them picking up the bookings. There's a reason they waited until the bids were in on 9/15 before sending out the mass cancellation emails. The bids likely didn't include taking on the bookings, which would be a liability on the books. I know I wouldn't take it on, unless I was forced to as a condition of the bidding process.

If you skip any leg of a trip, the entire trip will get cancelled.

Please note german papers report that ALL longhaul will be ceased from Oct 15. So in case you have a flight back after sukkoth to the US it will not happen.
Consider strongly if you want to fly to Israel, as chances are big you will have no return

Hi I was wondering if someone else is in a similar situation... so my flight is scheduled to leave tomorrow from tlv to nyc stopover in txl it is not showing cancelled on air berlin website and I did not receive any cancellation emails, however when I checked British airways they say its cancelled... I tried calling air Berlin and I waited over an hour so I gave up. What do I do now do I go to the airport and assume my flight was not cancelled?

have same dates, should be ok getting there. i spoke to AB earlier, they claim that the DUS-NYC long-haul is not being touched, does not mean that it can change though.

just spoke to them again, they claim that they have no info as far as cancellations. they claim that all flights are subject to being cancelled at any moment, and there is no plan in re-booking anyone on any other airline

My flight is booked Oct 2-15 NYC-DUS-TXL-TLV
I called Air Berlin and they wont cancel my ticket, even though they rebooked me to get in 8 hours later than originally planned. I then called Amex and they refunded me for the flights. Amex said Airberlin has until Dec 12 to respond. (I am not trying to get a free trip out of this, I just dont want to be stranded at the airport).

Do I:
1. take the Airberlin flight as its still showing as ticketed?  I really dont want to take the 2 stops and gets me in much later than I want.
2. Buy another ticket and risk Air Berlin arguing with Amex. But the new ticket is much better timing for me and will iyH definitely get me there.

if there giving you a refund on air Berlin try finding star alliance award availability on united or Singapore for united flights or partner airlines and book that as a back up ticket in case you get canceled . Within 24 hours anyway I think the cancellation cost would between  75 to 125 dollars to redeposit the points depending on if you use Singapore or united points which would insure you have a backup ticket. My question is what if you book a backup ticket on united and would only cancel in case your air Berlin flight only offers to refund your ticket and not rebook you. However air Berlin decides tocancel your flight and instead of refunding you they rebook  you on the same flight you have as a backup and now you have duplicate reservations one for your backup and one for your air berlin. What would you need to do then? Would it be a problem to just cancel your backup points ticket? Or would they cancel everything if you  canceled one of the seats you have on the flight? does this raise a flag when you check in by the gate?

if u can prove that they canceled your return,  insurance should be obligated to reimburse the entire ticket- call them and ask

Does anyone know if in a situation like this, there are grounds for compensation of delay (in this case 8 hours), I have a client with a similar situation. Is a delay only considered a delay once the flight begins?(or doesn't). I would be interested if there is anything in either US,EU or Israeli law on this.

If they informed you sufficiently in advance there are no grounds for mandatory compensation.

email is very unclear, besides, you can still book a one way to TLV oct 3rd and a few other dates. the more reason that the outbound should be valid.

Had the same issue with a family of 8 PAX, was issued with AMEX and I filled a dispute on the whole amount, as the new o/w ticket was about the same price.

This is what they requested:

A copy of the monthly billing statement (showing the last 4 digits of the account number) verifying that the entire travel fare was purchased with your covered card

Check the T&C. IINM CSR does NOT cover in case of financial default. Citi Premier does.

I would book it as a codeshare with Delta/KLM/AF if possible so that those airlines would need to rebook you on their metal if Alatalia defaults.

They may not cover fare differences. Get travel insurance.
