Title: Delta Skymiles
Post by: dvol on July 21, 2011, 11:53:39 AM
Hey all,

I booked award tickets with Delta to SJU for September with the 50% bonus transfer from Amex MR (still kicking myself over not doing enough research, because JetBlue would have been just another 1500 Amex points roundtrip :( ). I know Delta charges $25 per bag, per person each way so it would total $100 for myself and my husband round-trip. I am eligible for the Delta Gold Skymiles Amex card, with a bonus of 30k miles after $500 spent, first year free. I know we would both get 1 free checked bag with that credit card and am wondering if it is worth it for me to get the card and close it before my first year free is up, or not worth the credit pull...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you did the 50% bonus transfer for 100K or 50K for the previous promo, you should be now a Silver status, that gets you 2 bags free anyway.

Transfer 1000 Amex MR in.

Or buy some magazines (looks like cheapest is Cigar Aficionado or Sunset for 400 miles):

Normally yes. But I just remembered that Delta Skymiles don't expire- how are yours expiring?

http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/program-rules-conditions.html
Under the SkyMiles Mileage Expiration policy, miles do not expire.
Delta reserves the right to de-activate or close an account under the following circumstances:
Fraudulent activity occurs
A member requests an account closure
A member is deceased
A member does not respond to repeated communication attempts regarding the status of his/her account
A member resides in or relocates to a country where membership is prohibited under applicable law
A member violates the terms of this Membership Guide and Program Rules

I don't want to open a thread so I'll use an old one although it's not exactly related to the discussion...

I am looking at awards NYC-SYD and I see very low availability, but when I check NYC-MEL with a stop in SYD there is plenty open, why is that?

With all the negative developments with Delta's program, there are times when Delta Skymiles are very useful to have. Recently I needed a flight from LAX to DTW and my only direct options were Delta and Spirit, of course it was a no brainier to use 12,500 Skymiles for a flight that would of otherwise costed me $560. Additionally I recently needed a flight from JFK- LAX, and Delta was my only option for a direct flight at the 12,500 level.
I barely use Delta but for the time being there are time they are very useful.

I got an offer for 1.4 as long as I could deliver 300k or more.
Anything in smaller amounts, the values is pretty low, like .9 cents (that's nine tenths of a penny, not $0.9 which would be ninety cents.)

i need a place to rant: i applied to the amex delta gold card a month ago, the trip i was looking at was 50,000 skymiles. early this evening around 8pm the trip was 60,000 skymiles, by 9pm it was 62,500, and now at 11:30PM its 67,500 skymiles. It went up over 10% in just a few hours! just outrageous, i cant believe they can get away with this. now i can see why they are called skypesos/ skyrubles/ skydrachma. useless rewards currency, unfortunately it seems more and more airlines seem to be following suit in this demand based pricing.

my statement closed today and i should have more skymiles on the way once they post (hopefully ASAP) or else im gonna be in trouble!

</end rant>

Then you aren't maximizing your applications.

I mean, why apply for the Delta over an MR or SPG card for example? Maybe one of the latter cards is going to end up being more valuable to you.

I was able to get them to honor it over the phone, but they couldn't figure out why it was happening. I still see some of those reduced fares online. Of course, DL no longer publishes an award chart, so there is no telling whether this is a discount or the new normal.

Tried booking a simple domestic reward flight and got error message, called up and they said my account is being audited and I need to send in my driver's license. I just did through the comment section as per rep suggestion and she said I need to wait a few days. Anyone have this before?

FWIW I never sold miles but I did do PGGMs and, when I booked dummy flights I used the wrong bday on myself. I have a hunch this is what caused it - booking flights with different birthdays for myself even though they were all cancelled ultimately. Thoughts?

Since I have 0 experience with DL awards, maybe someone here can help a bit.
I have two awards in Asia with China Southern and China Airlines booked for August. Due to the wife being pregnant, we won't be able to take the trip. I'm prepared to throw away the miles since I'm not willing to pay $600 redeposit fees for a lousy 35000 miles. The China Southern trip has a 15 min schedule change which I know doesn't allow me to cancel for free. Delta told me pregnancy is not an acceptable reason to get the redeposit fee waived. Does anyone know if I HUCA enough that I will find an agent who will at least waive the fees for the first trip for me? I work at an airport so will station agents be able to better help me? Any chance at all to somehow get around the second trips fees?
Thanks

Not sure if anyone has experience with this, but Delta website is showing award availability for TLV-NYC for Aeroflot operated flights via SVO. the problem is that when i check for the SVO-NYC leg on Expertflyer or even Flying blue, it doesn't show any availability.

is Delta just showing phantom space that is not bookable? or do they have access to more award space with Aeroflot (this seems unlikely).

just hesitant to transfer points over to book the award and get stuck with skypesos that i cant use.

IINM Aeroflot uses Sabre. Expertflyer might be using Amadeus. IME Aeroflot transatlantic availability doesn't show up on Amadeus. Check Aeroflot's website for availability if you want to be sure. Ask FB to book using direct access.

You cannot do that. You can only use DL miles with DL to book on DL or partners, or as someone might have suggested, sell the miles to someone that has use for them, and buy what you can use.

DL miles don't expire, so the only urgency in using them is protection from future devaluations (though with the current value of those, it's hard to see how it can go lower...)

Might be better to post in the where to credit thread. I would say that if you are flying Aeroflot consistently their redemptions are much better than delta. It's 35k to upgrade rt Svo-jfk which is fantastic given the fares they offer. There are some other good deals in their redemptions. But be aware they have no credit card  partners and there really is no way to transfer points into your account other than flying. In addition some reward redemptions need to be booked on the phone.

You have very little time. Milage run is a good option, but if you can't, you can open a card that offers MQMs. I don't know how quickly you can get the spend done and have them post, it may be too late, but that's a good place to start looking

Does anyone have any luck getting the fee waived for non status members? I have a award ticket that I want to cancel but I dont want to pay $150 to reinstate my miles
Delta is usually pretty good about waiving this if you have a good excuse. HUCA usually works for me.

Depending on how long you have till you need the miles back, try to see if the flight gets delayed.

My understanding is that Delta doesnít really offer their lowest level Ďsaverí tickets for this flight. Therefore partner airlines cannot book Delta award tickets. Partner Airlines can only book saver awards. So to use miles for this flight, your only option would be to use Delta miles( that way you can book non-saver awards).

He means that AF is not showing any DL space for that date. Which makes sense, knowing how DL releases (or in this case does not release) award inventory.

Oh, and you canít search AF for mileage without being logged in.

We had an 80 minute schedule change on an award ticket in April that will get us in at 11 pm and wreak havoc on my young daughter's sleep schedule (she's not a good sleeper).  Only other option Delta is offering me is to overnight in Atlanta and take the connecting flight out the next day.  I'd much prefer to cancel and book a more reasonable American Airlines flight that gets in at 7:30 pm, but a phone call and twitter DM have both responded that they can't refund unless it's at least a 90 minute schedule change.  Any chance that HUCA would work or is Delta pretty strict about the 90+ minute rule for refunds/redeposit fee waivers?

Got a delta award booked for 16K that I won't be able to use.
The redeposit fee is $150, which is almost a wash with the value of the miles, and must be done at least 72 hrs before flight.
There's a chance they change schedule, weather delay, etc. on the flight.
Would they redeposit the miles if the flight is changed/delayed >1hr?
Any other options here?

In the end there was a very helpful storm on Jan 19-20 that Delta issued a weather waiver for.
Even though the website does not let you cancel awards within 72 hours, the phone rep was able to cancel and redeposit the miles with no problems.

Last year I had a ticket for the day of a snow storm, but they didn't issue waivers until right before or until flights where canceled shortly before. I got lucky and had a 20 minute schedule change a few days before, so the day before the storm I changed my ticket to that day. By the time I showed up to my flight 4 hours later the cancellations already came in and there where people where running into the airport crying at the check in desk that they needed to be on a flight.

Quick Q for the collective wisdom of the forum.... Transfer of Bonvoy to Skymiles, stated time frame is up to six weeks, what's your actual experience with timing? TIA

If one should apply for a Delta skymiles Gold cc and be approved instantly, will that work for a free 1st bag for a flight tomorrow morning?
Assuming with amex it would work, since I have my delta sky miles # and card number, being that amex allows one to have the number ahead of time?
