Title: Lake George, NY Master Thread
Post by: Deal Guy on July 31, 2011, 03:52:48 AM
Anyone have any good ideas where to stay?
Where are minyanim located during the summer?
What are the best places to visit/activities for 2 days?
Kosher food?

minyan only opens after tisha ba'av otherwise there is a belz yeshiva in saratoga springs
I just stayed with a camp at the Ramada in Queensbury about 10 min outside Lake george and it was fine.
Activities: six flags, tubing/rafting on the Hudson, steamboat on Lake George, swimming in the Lake, ropes course about 20 min north called Adirondack Extreme was awesome, fireworks on the lake at 9:30 PM on Thursday and special days, go carting/laser tag at the fun spot or adventure racing in queensbury

In lake george the best lodging for a family would be to rent a cabin. The minyan in in a tent on bloody pond rd. If you prefer to sleep in a motel, the travelodge will give you a discount for mentioning the lake george minyan. In general, its a beautiful place, don't know specific attractions though (the lake). The price chopper there (local grocery store) brings in a relativeky decent selection of kosher food for the summer. Previously, the number for the minyan was (518)522-8478. Call him for more info

Anyone been to Lake George lately?
I'm thinking of doing a quick getaway there on Sunday for like 2-3 days. I haven't a clue about the place and don't have much time to research. Would appreciate any tips such as what to do, where to stay, what's there for kids etc.

I've stayed in Comfort Suites.  They are so used to having Jews they had compiled a binder with the hechsherim of the breakfast foods.  I still wanted to see the actual packages.  Just don't go during the busiest time to ask them, come in a quieter period and they are not so stressed.

Never went with toddlers, but my kids loved it from age 8 to teenagers.
Fun Spot is great, there is an indoor roller rink, and go carts.
Lots of mini golf.
Great horseback riding.
Best part is to rent a boat on the lake and take a tube attached.   Drag those kids across the water...let them jump out and swim.  There are places you can tie the boat up, I think even in town.
Fireworks at night somebody else mentioned. There is parasailing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, banana boats.
Tubing, white water rafting.  Google Lake George you'll see all kinds of stuff

Ben & Jerrys is the only kosher food. There is a Walmart nearby..you can get alot of stuff but I brought my own food, just supplemented the snacks in Walmart.
There is an outlet mall there, Small Six Flags.
If you want to go to the ropes course, I suggest a reservation beforehand.  We just drove up there once and my kids were disappointed since they had no reservations for the next 3 days.

Minyan started after tisha b'av.  The day right after tisha b'av may be iffy.  We went up once and only had 9.
After that day, it was fine.

There is a Kiruv Camp called Sinai Retreats about 15 min away in Warrensburg. Pretty good food too!

Bet that they would be happy to host families for meals for a few dollars (to a good cause)

Don't think they're open this time of year. This is what a Google search brought up. Maybe try calling one of numbers.

No. I can't see one relying just on the food available in the Lake George Price Chopper.

The Price chopper in Albany does have a decent amount of kosher food, (I recall) including a kosher bakery.

During the week (summer only, not sure exact dates) Chabad from Saratoga set up a tent and there's Minyan there.
IIRC they had for Shabbos also, didn't end up staying there over Shabbos so not sure.

Try contacting Chabbad from Saratoga.

I do not know regarding the scoops (if it is better than b&r) but they do sell containers from the factory that have a straight hechsher. But it does kinda take away from the ice cream parlor experience.
