Up to the states to decide now. They won't take long....

@Something Fishy
The title is misleading for a sec I thought its about cross-border Nexus program.
It should say "Sales tax Nexus"

Good point. Updated.

I hate it, but this was inevitable. One of the only reasons I ever shop on eBay is to avoid paying sales tax.

People forget the old saying that only two things are certain in this world: death and taxes.

No Amazon was actually pushing for this. With Amazon having wharehouses in more and more states they were creating a Nexus issue for all their sellers that were not charging sales tax, and anything sold by Amazon direct was being charged sales tax. Meanwhile other online only stores that don't have wharehouses and stores across the United states were being exempt of charging sales tax across the country.

The locking feature becomes stale if not used every year or so. Lol

Why is he using year over year? Seems like that would mess up the true comparison.

How?
Because he's basically obscuring scale by zooming out.

I just looked at data from the Annual Retail Trade Survey (https://www.census.gov/data/tables/2016/econ/arts/annual-report.html). You can easily look at e-commerce sales tax as a percentage of e-commerce sales over time, and compare that to all other sales tax as a percentage of all other sales. If it's lower (which it is), that indicates you're losing tax revenue on e-commerce. That gap has been closing (I'd guess because of more e-commerce hitting the nexus requirement in more states), but e-commerce as a percentage of all retail is still rising too.

I'd caveat that he has given himself an out by being very vague in saying that states are overestimating how much they're going to collect, which leaves his actual point somewhat of a moving target.

I just signed a petition to protect small online businesses and consumers from unfair Internet taxes. You should sign it too. http://bit.ly/2JUTsyb #NoNetTax

 Doesn't hurt to fill in.
