Title: Prime Day 2018 thoughts
Post by: zale on July 18, 2018, 03:20:29 PM
Dansdeals stated the following:

"Prime Day is over, but boy was it fun this year! It made it worth being an Amazon Prime member even if they would quadruple the price!".

(Funny thing is, I had a feeling that Amazon took Prime Day up a notch this year to stop people from pondering their need for Prime due to the 20% increase in cost of membership.)

The article then goes on to post deals that were super hot mainly because they were:

1. Price mistakes
2. Amex promotions

Now, I'm pretty sure that the Amex promotions come from Amex, as this is what I was told by several Amazon reps. (not that they always know what they are talking about. ) I think the reason Amazon took the 20% off retail is so that they can milk Amex more and at the same time make customers excited which is a win-win for Amazon. (Crazy Kindle prices? Yup, that's mainly Amex too.)

If we take out those two factors, we are left with some really hot deals, but certainly not smoking hot deals. There was a Pantry deal that was good for one per account. there were also a good deal of inflated discounts, meaning they inflated the retail price to make it look as though the deal was super hot.

Why am I writing this? Well, I still think that it's wrong of Amazon to increase the cost of Prime by 20%, and at the same time charge MORE money for each additional service, such as Fresh, Pantry etc. I don't believe we should endorse this and let this slide. I think they will keep raising the price as long as we continue to endorse it.

That said, I did take very, very heavy advantage of yesterdays price mistakes and deals, so thank you Dan.

I agree about one thing, this was AMEX Day.

My guess is that Amazon and AMEX split the costs of those promos.
You had to be Prime to get the massive savings possible due to AMEX discounting from the original price. That accounting could have been fixed but wasn't.
Whole Foods was a nice tie-in.

Who said the free diapers was a mistake? Amazon cancels mistakes and they haven't cancelled any, sometimes they just want the buzz.

Thou doth protest too much, methinks

Those would typically be manufacturer sponsored anyhow.

How do you know which coupons are manufacturer sponsored and which are Amazon/Prime sponsored and which are split?

I don't really get this thread. Anyone with Prime should have made off like a bandit, paying for years of Prime.

Clipped coupons are manufacturer sponsored the vast majority of the time.

+10000000000 on the second half.

Yesterday had tons of clipped coupons for Prime members. You're saying they were all manufacturer sponsored? Maybe they're split?

There could be some level of splitting but that too takes much of the cost off of Amazon's shoulders.

At the end of the day, why do I care who is shouldering what cost for my Prime coupon?

Fully agree. I was explaining how it makes sense that it was not a mistake. No different than clipping paper coupons and using them with a sale to get a free item.

I think what set me off was the part about Prime being quadruple. I still think increasing the price by 20% for people who have had Prime for a decade is a smack in the face.

Free diapers was clearly a glitch. The coupons on the product pages and the coupons on the coupon pages are supposed to be one and the same. Why are they letting it ship? I donít know, maybe in the spirit of Prime day?

@Dan , in all seriousness, aren't you concerned about them simply banning you with this kind of a haul?

It will probably take some time for them to catch on since they are busy fulfilling millions (if not billions..?) of orders and you might even have your whole thing shipped but at some point I imagine this will raise some eyebrows.

All I have to say is I finally have a reply to my father's good old "it's cheaper not to buy it".

I've seen products that we manufacture and sell to Amazon, that had coupons on them, that were not sponsored by us.

Overheard in Cleveland
"Thanks for babysitting. Please wash your hands with this soap before and after you change a diaper. Make sure to use at least 8 pumps per hand.
"Please use one of each size diaper every time you change. Just so it doesn't leak, you know?" Also, please use 13 wipes at a time, just so nothing gets on to your hands.
"Oh, don't forget we change diapers every half hour whether it's dirty or not. Wouldn't want to risk a diaper rash, right?"

"Dan, did you pack Rafi's snacks for school tomorrow?"
"Yup. Added 200 wipes in case his hands get dirty. How many spare diapers does he need to take?"
"What? He's been trained for years?"
"OK, I'll pack a case just in case there's an accident. You can never be too safe."

Don't forget the Frontier (formerly known as United) amenity kit.
